Ozempic has really smoothed out my hypoglycemia, it doesn't say it will, says it can cause low blood sugar?? I have told them it's helped that. I used to have a terrible time with it and had to carry glucose tablets, rarely have I used one anymore. So, it must be helping me too. The insurance I changed from at year end, had already sent me 3 months' worth, the last week of the year, I received the shipment today. I only expected a months' worth. I have almost 6 months now?? I have not heard of any shortages around here for it. www.ctvnews.ca/health/diabetes-drug-in-short-supply-in-u-s-after-celebrities-influencers-touted-its-weight-loss-benefits-1.6193064Ozempic, a drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes, is extremely hard to find in the U.S., after some celebrities and social media influencers touted it as a weight loss solution. The drug, also known as semaglutide, was approved in 2017 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mainly to treat diabetes but it also showed weight loss results. Both Ozempic and Wegovy, another semaglutide medication produced by drug manufacturer Novo Nordisk, were also subsequently approved by Health Canada. In recent months prominent figures like Elon Musk have said they use the semaglutide medications for weight loss. But while the FDA has reported an Ozempic shortage in the U.S., the Drug Shortages Canada website has not reported any shortages here. ------------- Just so you know, weight loss shortcuts never last. You ALWAYS gain it back.

I have mixed feelings on this even though I'm a Prevention Before Pills person. I do agree that people who need it to manage diabetes should get priority but being overweight carries so many health risks and their attendant costs (diabetes, increased risks of various forms of cancer, stress on hips, back and knees, heart problems, high BP, becoming unemployable in physically-demanding jobs) that I'm coming around to the point that I think pills that help people reduce weight are good as long as they don't have any serious side effects. I spoke to a lovely woman on one of my trips who was adhering to the very disciplined diet required after bariatric surgery- small amounts, protein-heavy, don't drink your calories, etc. I was comfortable enough to ask her if she'd known then what she knew now about how she'd have to change her diet she would have gone through with the surgery. (To me, it seemed far more restrictive than a low-calorie diet.) She said yes, she would have- she'd tried everything- Weight Watchers, all the usual. They didn't work. I do believe that "eat less, move more" is the best course and I've seen it work and be sustained over decades by adults who had 100+ lbs. to lose, but if that doesn't work, for whatever reason, pills may be a solution.

There is taking it because you've exhausted other options and your doctor decides to try off label and celebrities doctor shopping so they can maintain their standards. There is also a fine line between we've tried X, Y, Z so we are going to try this and you're getting it because it's on everyone's brain because the media keeps advertising it for this instead of what it's intended purpose was. Reading about Viagra is really interesting because it went through a similar make-over. It's original intended purpose was a heart medication but it had an oh so interesting side effect. They changed marketing for it and now we all associate the little blue pill with that. If there is a shortage priority should go to people who have an immediate need for it. Diabetes should trump weight loss that shouldn't even be an argument. A person with diabetes could die in the immediate future without their medication. An overweight person dying 10-15 years later because they didn't lose the weight is not an immediate need especially when there are more options in the interim that they can use to manage their condition vs someone with diabetes.

It's not for people who say 'I ate a cake/banana split/chocolate/fried food, but I don't do it often'. It adds up. Like I said, weight loss shortcuts never last. The weight ALWAYS comes back.

Southwest is the biggest airline at my home airport. They fly direct to many places. I'm not risking the connections with Delta or American for twice the price. What I've learned in my adult years flying is they will all have delays and cancelations that might leave you stranded.
My uncle regularly flew Delta to Birmingham with a connection in Atlanta. He learned to sprint to the rental car counter when the weather delays started.

I don't feel the least bit guilty. I was to the point of not being able to walk and it was getting worse. I'm sure even eating less would not have helped me to the point it has. Many of you here know the pain I was in, the braces I was using. Couldn't even get in and out of a vehicle. We were considering the point at where I would need a wheelchair and I had lost some weight. From looking at the tables it appears I was overweight. Even now the weight at times hurts my feet. I'm not taking a higher dose to lose more, I'm on .5mg and they have offered for me to go to 1, but no I'm not. I'm going to try and lose to 145 with what I'm doing now.
I am walking for now, how long before the pain catches up again I don't know. But I value each day I get without the excruciating pain I had. I'm rarely taking hydrocodone, mainly just ibuprophen for now or just put up with the pain long as I can.
I have enough med for 5 to 6 months so won't need a new scrip for awhile. Not sure why I ended up with extra but it's welcome.
By the way, Pfizer has a drug called Wegovy for weight loss. I also read the other day there is another being approved. Sounds like the problem is the insurance companies will not pay for these for people to use so they are getting them to pay for ozempic. They said Biden tried to before repubs going to take over to make them consider it too as a drug for life threatening conditions and cover these. Many cannot figure out why ins would not want people to lose weight. In the long run it could save them a fortune for health care costs. And yes, it says you may have to take them for the rest of your life. Just some side reading. I will just have to see how this all works out.

I think there are several new weight loss drugs expected to come on the market in the next year or so which will might help reduce the Ozempic shortage www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/weight-loss-drug-affordability-rcna60422The physicians at our clinic chain must get pre-clearance by a physician panel on a case-by-case basis for all off-label prescriptions, and the panel will not approve Ozempic for non-diabetic patients. They do prescribe other FDA-approved drugs for weight loss, along with individual counseling on exercise, individual appointments with nutritionists, and online cooking classes with nutritionists.

I have been through a couple of programs and dietary changes through the years. Some helped some did not.
The endocrinologist prescribed it, like I said it has helped my hypoglycemia a lot and that's an important improvement for me. I used to get so faint, many times it has become a health issue. I almost passed out coming from Houston one time and slid out of the truck onto the ground. I was hauling a trailer of furniture. Bystanders came to help me and if not for them would have passed out. I was bringing the dog and cat and BJ was not friendly to the helpers, I was able to tell him calm down. They were going to call medics. But had them get me a Payday candy bar and real Coke and got ok. This had been a problem for a long time. I'm guessing the slow down in digestion this drug causes has helped stabilize my blood sugar issues. For me a good thing. I've had many other issues with blood sugar too, docs just said nothing they could do. Try to eat more often, yeah, that helps weight loss, and I still keep glucose tablets everywhere. When it hits it's bad. I had literally crawled to the house before and got a soda, for years I didn't know what it was and hubs thought it was a big joke. That anytime we went anywhere for awhile I just wanted to eat out. I still carry apples and bananas and such plus glucose in every car and on the mower to be careful. But like I said have never had this issue since using this.

Dinner, another issue. Hubs is having leftover chili with a hot dog. DD will have deviled egg potato salad and a hot dog. I ate a banana. May have a smoked chop later for protein. Also a sugar free glass of koolaid. Would love to eat chili, but not enough and I don't need it. May have a boiled egg later, I keep these for snaking.
And going to make a big bowl of salad, they can have that with their dinner also. And I may add a bit of thin sliced ham with an egg and garbanzo beans for a chef salad instead of the chop.

I woke up at 3 am due to breathing problems and was FINALLY drifting back off to sleep when the &*($#@ generator decided to start at 4 am even though we did NOT have a power outage. Turns out it was the weekly 5-minute test run that should happen at 10 or 11 am. Of course, my phone blew up with pissed off neighbors who were also awakened. I called the company, and they claim they re-set it. DH said it ran at 10 am today while I was out.
So today I was all of Snow White's effing dwarves - Drippy, Sneezy, Coughy, Raspy, Gimpy, Grumpy, and Sleepy. And then I went across town to get the hand-written draft of the new book I'm transcribing. God help me, it fills a large LLBean tote bag. He says he's in no hurry, but he's 76 now and I feel like I need to hurry for his sake and mine. We agreed I would email him 25 chapters at a time. Oh, and he gave me the wrong address and his apartment is on the second floor, no elevator. He was in boxers and a robe, looked like death warmed over, and did not make his ritual move on me. In years past, I would have asked about the black eye, and he would have told me about a NYE adventure, but today I think he fell so I didn't ask.

I took off yesterday, so back to work today. WFH since school does not start back until tomorrow. Catching up here and contemplating life. With the holiday season over I have been thinking about what I want my life to look like going forward. Perusing the threads on resolutions and 2023 goals is helping me sort some things out in my head.
I have decided two things. One, I will use the entire month of January to figure out what I want and how I want to get there. Two, once I figure out how to get there I am going to focus on creating 1 - 2 new habits every month. For instance, I do need to lose weight. But setting goals with numbers and times for exercise and all that never seems to work with my brain. But if I can change one thing and start a new habit that will work. Then I can add more. Same with decluttering/organizing the house. Instead of focusing on a specific project, if I can create one new habit that will move me forward. My hope is I can start accumulating these new habits that I then use to propel me forward on my never ending to-do lists.
I don't know. Maybe I'm not explaining what's in my head very well. But I'm going to give it a try anyways!

Well darn, getting my squiggly eye issue, they believe it's a type of migraine. Will have to close my eyes and lay down for a bit. Can still take an aspirin chewed up which helps it. On the 10th have my EGD so still have one day to stop the thinner and aspirin.
I just can't see when it does that. if I'm driving have to pull over. Oh poo

DH has not been able to get his Ozempic filled for 2 months now, going on 3, due to the shortage. He is diabetic and also has CKD. I worry. His stage 5 CKD had been destabilizing a bit already. Don't know when he'll be able to get Ozempic. Hate to move to another medication when the Ozempic has been working so well for over 2 years.

Wegovy is set for a robust relaunch in 2023, supplies of Ozempic are expected to stabilize by March, and competitors waiting in the wings with similar drugs are slated to hit the market within the next few months. The year of Ozempic? It may well turn out to be an era.

My hope is I can start accumulating these new habits that I then use to propel me forward on my never ending to-do lists. I don't know. Maybe I'm not explaining what's in my head very well. But I'm going to give it a try anyways! The times I made progress with having a better lifestyle, I focused on adding good stuff, instead of focusing on eliminating bad stuff. I figured that adding “good” things and habits and getting consistent with them, would eventually leave less time and room in my life for my “bad” habits. For example, when I was successful with eating better, I focused on adding healthier foods to my diet. I felt like if I got consistent with making better food choices more often, eventually there would be little to no room left for the “bad” stuff. If I knew I had something in my refrigerator to prepare for dinner, I was less likely to stop and get something to eat on my way home. The bonus was that what I had at home to eat for dinner was something healthy. I’m lazy, so if a “healthy” meal is my easiest option, that’s what I’ll go with lol. I took a healthier snack that I liked, to work, I was less likely to cruise the vending machines for a snack. That approach works much better for me than telling myself what I can’t have. It’s like telling myself what I’m going to do instead of, and making that option easy and convenient vs telling myself what I can’t do or have. Different things work for different people. It sounds like you’ve figured out what works for you. I wish you much success!
