Ugh. Last week was hella intense, following up a two day off site (I am NOT used to having to look businesslike anymore, and gahhh so much socializing) with a high stress meeting trying to get a frickin budget approved for the trainwreck project that ran out of funding two weeks ago. Always fun when you have to admonish a group of mid-career PhDs that they are contractually obligated to do something that they’ve been blithely ignoring for a year plus I thought it would be good to make it to the weekend, except frickin Christmas so there is no break at the weekend. Successfully got DS to choose presents for PP and DH, collected most of what I need for Xmas dinner, most of DS’s and inlaws stuff wrapped, and made it halfway through the contact sport known as cookie baking. All with a migraine. Also finally got the two main floors mopped, followed immediately by DS tromping all over in dirty shoes. I feel like a comic strip. In a massive display of dating myself the old I get the more and more I identify with Cathy. www.cathyguisewite.com/comic-stripOMG I can’t unsee this now...

I can’t stop worrying about turkeys selling out now before I buy one. Going out shopping tonight, but will someone please tell me I’m being ridiculous for worrying? I think you will be fine. We are having ribs

I'm in Kansas City, also a site. BF's son-in-law is a professional soccer player and he was so happy when KC was named a site I practically had to scrape him off the ceiling. Every time he's over visiting he gets all excited at the prospect of my being able to rent out my house for the games. It's less than 5 miles from the stadium, 4 bedrooms, enclosed porch upstairs and deck downstairs overlooking a small lake. I figure it would be a great opportunity to go to Europe for a few weeks (more than paid for by potential rental income) but I'd have to move all my jewelry and personal papers up to DS and DDIL's place and I wonder if they'd want it for longer than I'd want to be gone. Plenty of time to figure it out. We're in Atlanta and have been thinking about that too! I used to work with someone whose family lives in Augusta and plenty of people rent out their homes during the Masters tournament. Apparently some people make $50-60K because corporations rent the houses on behalf of their bigwigs!

I got a call last night from an old friend. We don't talk often-she usually calls when there's something dramatic going on in her life. She wanted to tell me that she is moving forward with divorcing her husband which was and was not surprising. She started the process back before Covid and then stopped it for some reason. While the process seems much farther along this time, with a custody agreement and property division settlement reached, I still wouldn't be shocked if she dropped it again. She has a long and sad history of remaining in violently abusive relationships, but this time it seems her teenage son said he would leave if she didn't divorce his father. She and her son are both in therapy and I hope it helps break the cycle. Mental illness plus drugs plus alcohol plus guns are very destructive. For years I've cringed every time I saw a headline like, "Family dispute results in murder/suicide in XYZ community", terrified it was them.
Perhaps I'm a monster for saying this but, knowing what both her children endured at home, I'm glad she is too old to have another one.

happy effing Monday. my fridge is over-full, with yesterday's leftovers stacked on top of itself on every shelf. I grabbed the container of eggplant to make myself a sandwich, and realized it was sitting in a puddle of chicken juices from a package of BSCB that apparently leaked all over that shelf. that package is now sitting in a huge mixing bowl on its own shelf, until I can run it through the IP later today. I am so thankful that it didn't all leak into the produce bin below, and that I packaged everything in plastic containers last night rather than foil pans (like I usually do when I know it's temporary) because throwing out all of the above would have made me lose my mind. raw meats will no longer be stored on that bottom shelf, it doesn't have a raised edge on the sides...with the produce bins below.

Took today off to do Christmas stuff while both DDs aren’t home. Right now, I’m at Waffle House getting breakfast. I haven’t been here in many years. At 10, I have a conference call for my side job. It should only last half an hour or so. After that, it will be Christmas present wrapping. DH spent time yesterday putting up the tree and starting to decorate it so there’s a place to put them! Waffle house. I love me my waffle house. We meant to take the girls on vacation last summer but didn't have time. I pass by this Waffle House all the time on my way to work/drop off DD1 at school and on the way home. We’ve lived in this house for 5.5 years and I’ve been there 2-3 times probably. 🤷♀️

Is the serial attendance issue coworker getting fired this week? Likely not, as I believe that she has a request out there for FMLA that is not yet approved. We use a third party company for that. It is doubtful that HR will do anything until that is resolved. That’s a bummer she won’t get canned. How long does FMLA approval takes? I bet all the attendance issues with that staff that shows up takes a bit to their morale seeing someone getting away with so much. I’m sure there’s things going on behind the scenes but still…

She is one of those who doesn't have much, but something almost always comes along in a time of need. She is a very good worker, other than the attendance issue.

Gwen and DH have commented I am trying too hard with Christmas. Hey at least I decided it was NOT a good idea to try candy making for the first time ever this year! I found a recipe for Date candy that my great grandmother made and for a few minutes there I was tempted until I really read the recipe and realized that is definitely not a skill I have. DH would probably appreciate it if I did not burn down our kitchen or cause third degree burns. I am going to make my great great great grandmother's cookie recipe later next week before we go up to the nursing home. I thought that would be a nice gift for grandma and then dad will take some out to GU for me. That is something I will give my grandma credit for. She wrote a lot of stuff down. On the side of the card she wrote a Christmas memory about the cookies that even my dad didn't know about. Those things are important to preserve because soon she won't remember them either.

I know you guys think we are crazy but that's ok.
I'm putting some cash in our safety deposit box while we are gone. It is here and don't want to leave it. I don't have expensive jewelry a couple of rings is about it, maybe a couple pair of earrings but none of those over $500. The guns are very old, was my dads and hubs dad. Everything else is household furnishings.
Now hubs has a lot of tools but again all covered by insurance. More than anything burglars would probably tear up the house thinking we did. so we will lock it all and go.
Now the crazy part. Hubs and I have decided to buy the lady a car. We have found some, high mileage, can get for a few thousand. Hubs will likely go over it, change oil and stuff, check the tires and brakes out. We are just going to give it to her. She will never climb out of this hole she is in without a vehicle. Can't do anything till we get back, but this is the plan and yes we will put 6 months of insurance on it too. We expect no money back for it. We have helped people before and has never hurt us. The ones we helped in the past pulled themselves up afterwards and have done well for themselves, so no regrets. We still hear from some of them. This won't hurt us either. We have enough and our life is good.
We are closing on the little farm Wednesday so that is done. Things usually work out well for us and sometimes I think it is because we give back.
I am on my way shortly to buy perishables like eggs, bread, milk, oranges and things like that to put in the blessing box. It is 28 here and going to get much colder so helping those less fortunate in this town for Christmas. There is going to be at least 4 brutally cold days it appears.
So all have a great day! I think I'm going to break down and have that cup of coffee I so desperately want!! McD's with lots of creamer is pretty mild.

(crams candy making onto an overflowing to do list bc holy cow that sounds awesome) One thing that I am bittersweet about is signing my dad up for Storyworth. It was during a time in his life when he mostly ignored the writing prompts, and I am glad I tried but really wish I’d come across it when he was more together and willing to write responses.

I know you apparently had success stories but based on what you have posted about this renter I think buying her a car is an incredibly bad idea. This woman has no ambition or motivation to help herself if she did she wouldn't be posting a highly edited sob story for all to see on Facebook. I hope you realize no matter what you do this woman is NOT going to willingly move. She'll find another reason to not move from the house and now she's got a free car. You have major confirmation bias going in regards to your tenet, you aren't seeing her for what she actually is. But you guys are going to do it anyhow. I just hate watching you complain about the affordability of moving closer to your son but in the same breath you are buying a grifter a car AND insuring AND a storage unit for 4 months. Is that a huge amount of money? No but it's still money that could be going to your wants and desires Country. Stop putting a bunch of people who owe you nothing ahead of yourself.

Sitting here, drinking coffee with the fireplace on. Harriet is warming up my lap, both dogs have been fed, watered and peed and have settled in for their morning naps. Sheldon is watching the littles at the bird feeder. We have not yet replaced the sunflower seed feeder that a raccoon (we think) demolished by taking huge bites out of the plastic, so all we have are peanuts and suet. The jays have not yet arrived this morning. Whoops! Jays just arrived!
I pretty much finished up packing my second bag. I have a few things left to cram in it when I’m done with them, but anything else I need, I can get in FL. The luggage service we used that picked up our first bag did not allow all kinds of things like OTC meds, toiletries and vitamins…..so those are all clothes and shoes.
Spent part of yesterday trying to compose a blog of the world cruise (which was largely the reason I needed to get my laptop up and running again). I’m having issues inserting pictures, will be playing around with it today.
It’s snowing again. I had hoped we could go to SEA on clear roads. Doesn’t look like that’s happening. We need to leave about 3 am for our flight tomorrow.

Chronic sciatica and arthritis in my hip. It's so bad, I can't walk without a lot of Tramadol and prednisone. That chronic sciatica is a real bitch. Maybe I need a hip replacement. Maybe I need physician-assisted suicide. Weltz-I am using you post only because you happened to mention physician-assisted suicide. The below quote was in our local newspaper obit's section today. Not posting the whole obit but only a portion of it. Only my opinion but the family was very brave to post this bit of information. Not exactly something which is a popular choice in the South.

My neighbor was gifted that last year by her son, and I wish I had found something like this when my dad was still alive. During our lunches, we discuss her answers. She has had such a fascinating life. Her dad was captured by the Russians during WWII never to be found and her mom spent her life looking for him, she lived in Czechoslovakia when it changed hands a bunch of times. She married an Armenian and they emigrated to the US via Australia (originally planning on stopping there, but didn’t like it). To come to the US, her family took a slow freighter in order to avoid paying further rents. They wound up in CA, and did very well. She speaks 6 languages. She is one smart cookie, I’m going to miss our lunches while we are gone.

I'm guessing the airlines will be happy to fly me in the reverse direction of everyone else during the games. I'm also guessing that I'd have to declare it as taxable income but it would still leave me with a lot left over. I'm sure there are agencies that will be VERY helpful in finding corporate renters- don't want to rent it out to a random bunch of party animals.

My former toxic friend let a non-paying tenant stay in her rental for 6 years. I told her so many times since she was doing nothing about it, I didn't want to hear about it. She finally had an eviction notice served by the sheriff in 2021 and got her out. Her first task was to change the locks. They were still tying their dog at the rental property so she had the small town sheriff deal with getting the dog gone, too. The woman had left all kinds of junk. She had a million excuses about why she couldn't pay, but she had moved to an apartment building. Not paying rent is a good gig for 6 years because you have a landlord who won't put their foot down.

countrygirl2, why don't you do a cash and car for keys? Give her some $ to get into another home and the car when and only when she leaves the house she's in right now.

Looking for others thoughts?
I work 2 side jobs. Side job #1 pays me the same fee today as I when I started 6 years ago. For the past few years, it was unknown if I was doing any work so treated as just a bonus. Side job #2 has increased the fee $5 per hour every year. I started both at the same rate. Now I’m thinking of writing a letter to state my fee increases from X to Y effective 1/1/23 for side job #1. What rate percent is too high?
FWIW, side job #2’s fee has increased 70% from what I started. I do realize that 70% increase is way too much. I started at $50/hr and side job #2 will be $85/hr next year. I was thinking $60/hr to $65/hr for side job #1. Too much?

That's funny Pink, it would be hard for me to give up salt and change my ways too, LOL! That's why I don't ever want to have to live with son and DIL. They are just the opposite; I like to keep things as neat as I can too, and they aren't concerned about it. That drives me up the wall, just couldn't do it. I HAVE to have my kitchen clean before I go to bed if nothing else is. Just a thing I have. Thankfully my blood pressure is low so I can eat that salt, in fact my heart doc said to add some if I wanted. The weather coming in the day we are to leave is not looking good. Very cold, possibly snow and or ice. Not good at all, who knows what can happen. Also talking winds pretty strong, like 40 to 50 mph. I can see sitting on the runway or in the airport. I sure hope not. And I 70 is a very, very dangerous road through here. I swear there is a wreck every other day on it and they are really bad ones with semis. Mister still uses salt, just not as much. The cabbage didn’t have pork in it for extra flavor. Well, guess why? The night before that, Mister fixed him the exact same salad he did for lunch the day before, except he added tomatoes. The second salad, he said it was salty. Impossible, we don’t add salt to salads. Mister doesn’t like it that he keeps complaining about his cooking.

Giving up salt will take a few weeks before it gets easier. When you are used to tasting salt on everything, you think your food has no flavor. Once you stop eating the salt, you discover the flavors of the food underneath. I went on high blood pressure meds 7 or 8 years ago. I put the salt shaker in the cupboard and found a really good low salt seasoning mix. We also use quite a bit of fresh ground pepper at the table. When I eat something salty these days, my fingers swell up shortly after. My body reacts fairly quickly. Mrs. Dash makes several good seasoning blends without salt. Other ingredients to add flavor without salt are red wine vinegar, red pepper flakes, onion powder, garlic powder, fresh garlic cloves, green onions, Italian parsley, cilantro and my favorite spicy mustard. this. and when you aren't used to salt, you definitely taste it when you do eat it. I grew up with low fat/low salt stuff in the house b/c my grandmother already had a heart condition by the time my sister and I were born. I don't remember a time where whole milk or a salt shaker were a regular thing. I also heavily season with other flavors, to accentuate the natural flavors of foods. if I use salt, it's a sea salt grinder. the fresh grinding makes the flavor stronger, so I don't need to use as much. We use Kosher salt. And Mister does use spices. I think his Dad just believes he and his wife are the best cooks ever and nobody else’s cooking can compare lol. Either that or he just wants to complain, because the food tastes fine.

Some medications can affect the sense of taste, particularly in the elderly so maybe some of his recently prescriptions are doing? Might be worth a question on his next doctor visit

It seems like I've been low key busy all day, but I'm looking around and didn't really accomplish all that much. Everything is put away and picked up, though, so I'll count that as a win. I would take that as a HUGE win. My house just keeps getting worse and worse week after week. It's really getting depressing. I honestly can't wait for my kid to move out so I can purge this entire house and have a cleaning company come in and do a deep cleaning and have a blank slate.

Well, they tried it. Someone at the hospital told Mister over the weekend that him, his Dad and his brother needed to come to a meeting at the hospital this morning, to make plans for Mom.
Apparently her Doctor did the discharge papers for her Friday, even though just the day before, at Dad’s appointment, the Dr was talking about how Mom’s wound is not healing, he said because she won’t eat. He said it’s going to be about 4 more weeks before the paperwork between the facility and Medicare gets sorted out. Apparently Medicare wants to be sure that the reason she goes to the facility this time is not related to the injuries she had physical therapy there for earlier this year, due to a car accident.
So today, they tried to send her home. Not to a facility, home. I had already told Mister yesterday that whatever they say, do NOT accept responsibility for her and don’t let your Dad do it. She can NOT go home.
When they tried to insist, because they said she has to leave because the Doctor did the paperwork Friday to discharge her, Mister said he told them, whatever ambulance y’all gon put her in to take her home, you might as well tell them to just make the block and come on back, because she’s coming right back anyway.
Mister already didn’t like his parent’s Doctor, he REALLY does not like him now.
Idk what they came up with, Mister was telling me on his way back to work. All I know for sure is he and his Dad refused to take her home.

Trying to keep the peace. Serial attendance issue coworker (who missed Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday last week) wants to know why other coworker seems to have an issue this morning. Other coworker worked Saturday to catch some things up and to prepare for if serial attendance issue coworker did not show up today. Or if she gets fired this week. I just want to go back to bed. I would have straight up told her that. But I'm a petty bitch so there's that.
