Glad you are ok, greenthumb59. We take tornadoes VERY seriously at our house, as we have a relative who lost their house to one many years ago. Fortunately, the family was in the basement when it hit, and they, by some miracle, all survived.

We almost had one touch down in front of our house in the middle of the night a couple years ago. I was surprised at how naturally I reacted because it has been a very long time since we came that close. DH woke me up and I was up grabbing Abby and half way downstairs before he even finished his sentence.

So I am behind, as is usual with me! We were awakened at 1 am by the emergency alerts on our phones. Had a tornado warned storm approaching my town. I got the tv on, realized it was gonna come really really close to us. DH is up - do you want coffee? There is a f***ing TORNADO coming and do I want coffee?? AYKM?? Got the son up, made everyone get shoes on, was ready to head to our half bath for cover. The local sirens were going off. I realized I was shaking pretty bad. And then I also realized it had already passed over us. It was not on the ground, thank goodness. But there is damage to a town out west of us. It took forever for me to go back to sleep last night. This was the closest we've ever had a tornado come to us. We did get some good rain. I am thankful we are all okay. I'm also thinking we need to have a better plan for the next time this happens. It will not include making coffee. Our cat, who is terrified of storms, is staying on me this morning. Everywhere I go she's following me to get into my lap. So very you glad and your family are okay - tornados terrify me. A tornado warning is the one and only thing that makes DH STFU and do exactly what I saw without delay or argument. Not in my house! It's like herding cats! Both son and DH just wandering around the house while the sirens are going off. I'm grabbing shoes, the cat, my phone. It was just chaos.

My dog is pretty happy right now. I took her to the pet store to pick out a new bed and some toys. Shopping is her favorite thing to do in life. Any shopping. Oddly, Home Depot is her absolute favorite place to go.

I've been playing with the idea of changing up our Thanksgiving meal. I love all the traditional foods but that makes no sense for just 2 people with a quite small fridge/freezer. Nor does hours of cooking and a long clean-up make sense either. I talked to DH about it today and he's totally onboard with something I'm calling "grazing all day" which will allow us to watch the parade and some football and enjoy good food without excess work. Some things will be bought and some made at home. This is what I have so far: Stuffed mushrooms (from Aldi, bake in oven for 20 minutes) Bacon-wrapped Brussels sprouts with maple syrup glaze (make at home) Spinach/artichoke dip from local restaurant with crostini Jumbo shrimp cocktail (make at home) Baba ghanoush and pita bread (Whole Foods) Kofta skewers (from Whole Foods, bake in oven or grill as weather allows) Tres leches cake portions (local bakery)
Ideas
If I am making a holiday meal just for DH and myself, I usually make a 3lb boneless turkey breast or heat up a 3lb spiral ham. I freeze half of it and that leaves enough for the holiday meal and a day or two of leftovers. Sometimes I am just in the mood for turkey even though it isn't a holiday, and I make up the 3lb turkey breast for a regular dinner.

The day of h'ors d'oeuvres sounds delightful for Thanksgiving. It's not the same, but I did something akin to it with the birthday bash I held a few weeks ago. Everything we had to eat except raw veggies with dip and birthday cake was skewered. So, shish kebab, grilled shrimp, chicken satay, grilled vegetables and bacon-wrapped scallops. All the food was eaten to my astonishment. 11 lbs of meat and seafood alone! Everyone loved it, from the 3 yo to the 75 yo.
