We were jolted awake at 5 am by alerts on our phones that a LEO was killed in a small town in the Texas Panhandle hundreds of miles away which is tragic news, but doesn't really justify waking up 3/4 of Houston. While having our morning coffee I figured out how to mute the alert feature After breakfast we were at Whole Foods when they opened and got some lovely fruit and sirloin steak for DH's Sunday recipe. I've cleaned the toilets, he changed the sheets and has them in the washer now. I brought home our Halloween stuff which I'll place tomorrow. I may take a nap now. ETA No nap today, neighbor is having a huge stump ground down hugs, some friends in Austin posted the same on FB this morning. wasn't the warning in like El Paso? I remember she said it was like 6h away from them. and you're even further IIRC. and yes, weltz - LEO = Law Enforcement Officer. interchangeable with PD. It was near Amarillo I think, a long way from the Gulf Coast

We’ve taken today off and are headed to where DD#2 lives. We’re going to a college football game tonight and will spend tomorrow with DD.

I am up to five freaking recruiters on LinkedIn trying to get me to apply for a 12 month contract job with Merck. I may not like my job at the moment but I do like not having to worry about there being no job at all and having to hunt all over again in a year. Plus the commute is a bitch. I am not doing that kind of commute for a job that can go poof in 12 months. Just no. Still trying to understand how LinkedIn is exactly useful. I find it to be worse than Facebook. Linked in is not a big deal for teachers. I set ip an account last fall when I knew I needed to change jobs. There a lot of school administrators who use it. Now that I’ve left public education and entered public health and private sector non-profit management, I find it slightly useful. There’s a lot I still find confusing though. It’s not as easy to use as FB.

I honestly don’t see her going anywhere that somebody doesn’t drive her to, so your post is really funny, and I’m not being funny when I say that. Trying to imagine her walking is funny, trying to imagine her riding a bike is even funnier. I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t even know how to ride a bike. But even if she does, no way would that be an acceptable means of transportation for her. Then she better make sure she has both Uber and Lyft downloaded and current CC information listed. That would be a hill I would die on. Want me to reconsider? Try being freaking nice for several months and I'll think about it. Nope, for me it’s not even about being nice anymore. We’re hella strict and clear about our financial to our children once they’ve graduated high school and/or turned 18. If you want our financial support from ages 18-24, you must be enrolled or working full time and part time in either school or a job. 1.5 FTE and we will pay for shit. If you don’t want to do that, that’s fine, but you cannot have our financial support. There’s a clear “Don’t eff with me” clause in our parenting of young adults.

damn, I hate interviewing. (the call got moved up to this am) I don't think I could see myself working for that guy, even if they do pick me to move forward in the process. after the requisite discussion about my background and qualifications, we get into the subjective questions. toward the end, I got a "what motivates you?" now, I know that "getting paid so I can fund my life" isn't the answer anyone's looking for, but come on now. maybe I'm in a bigger need of a break than I thought, if this is how I react to questions like that today. I mean, I have severance almost through April. I can at least wait til my termination date and not think about it. I do think there’s benefit to interviewing just for the sake of practice.

Have you ever shown Mister any of our responses to his children's behavior? I'd be interested in his take on them. Several people all agreeing that they're assholes has to at least be thought provoking for him. Heck no, I haven’t shown him any of the responses. I do mention “my message board” sometimes, like when I was getting info here regarding his Dad’s situation or other helpful information that’s shared here. But he wouldn’t care at all about what posters here say or think about his daughters. I just wondered. I mean, I don't expect him to agree with anything or change his parenting, but it has to at least make one think a little bit when everybody and their mother says his kids aren't the least bit respectful. I would step back and wonder about myself and how I interact with my children at minimum.

I don't have to buy DS a st Nick's gift I did start a super mario afghan for him. I need to keep on working on that now. I know I'm like hogging the whole board today. Meh. We all do it every now and then. I've been dragging you guys through my whole house buying experience whether you want to or not. It happens.

I always say things like learning and the fact that I am the biggest nerd ever keeps me learning and getting better all the time even after 25 years. Then I make a joke about how I geek out when I something interesting on a policy/claim. I also mention the fact that I tell people about things I've seen/heard while they stare at me like a deer in headlights because literally nobody finds insurance fascinating if they're outside the industry. That usually gets a laugh and then a shared experience and makes me relatable. Then we both geek out a little talking insurance making them really like me.

While I am not necessarily 100% pro law enforcement as many terrible things are done by some of them, I do believe the bad apples who rape, murder and otherwise torment the weak are a minority, thankfully. During my volunteer work I spent a decent amount of time with various officers and the nature of the job really came home to me when I hugged a Lt. Commander of our local police department (yeah, women do that ) and I could feel the ballistic vest under her uniform and realized that was what her family felt every morning as she left for work. And that she might not come back home.

This reminded my of my chat with NIL. Her mother and I chat on Messenger once in a while. She and her husband are back in Ukraine because it's home and Norway is not home. They are currently at their "summer" home, which DN1 says is a tiny cabin with no frills. So far, that area has not been targeted. Odesa is getting hit daily so she said they may spend the winter at the "summer" home. Many Russians and Ukrainians have a dacha.....a small cabin in the woods where they go in the summer. Even here in the city, my mother would look for a small place to rent in the country even if it meant sharing a space with other people. Her favourite thing was to wander the woods, picking mushrooms or berries in the fields. My olfactory memories of summer were berries cooking on the stove for jam and mushrooms cooking with onions, which were then served with sour cream. She sent me a video of her husband using a sickle abd he was whacking on weeds. She loves to cook. When I met her in Toronto, she would go to the Ukrainian part of Toronto and bring home food to cook. She thought J should have more root foods. I met her at their wedding but didn't spend any time with them. We were sharing the same space in Toronto. I had my guest suite for sleeping, but we spent a lot of time together. I think missing home was the reason she didn't stay in Toronto after all the trouble it took to leave. The escaping to Modolva, running after a flight to Toronto in Poland, her daughter getting the emergency visa. Her mother was still living but quite ill. She couldn't not go back to her mother.

I got the second coat of oil on my cedar deck today. It looks really nice. I will have to wait a couple of days to put the space back together. That oil needs to dry thoroughly and it gives off fumes until it does dry. It's very windy today so the drying is going well.
Now if only I could get my floors mopped. One large physical undertaking per day is all I want, so mopping might be tomorrow.

I had a great day. Did a lot of swimming, then went to see an art exhibit. It didn't make a lot of sense until I put on the headphones. Then the big art installation made sense. It was lovely. It reminded me of leaves floating on sun-dappled shallow water.

For instance, the Metro Police are first on deck for concerns about bus stops, busses, light rail and such. Of course, the Houston Police will respond too for serious assaults, murder, etc. The coroner is part of the County so if a guy gets shot on a Metro bus, Metro police will respond along with Houston cops and notify the County Coroner. Texas Rangers come in on issues that may be state-wide like corruption probes. The HCU police can stop and detain a suspect on campus for assault or drugs, but Houston cops have to take the perp into custody and book in the County jail. Fun, huh?

I guess we have a lot less crime, but things are getting worse. We have shootings now, with guns smuggled in from the USA.

Wow! I accomplished 10 out of 11 errands today. DH took care of the one on the way home because he had the PO Box keys in his car. Last errand was my flu shot on the way home after dinner with DH. We’ll see if I end up with the usual feel-like-crap side effects tomorrow and maybe Sunday. The hummers are gone. I last saw at least one yesterday morning. My porch is Halloweened and Falled. Well, I feel somewhat human again. The big underwriting assignment is done. At least, the draft is. I worked on it on my own, nonstop, since Wednesday. I worked 8 hours on Wednesday, 12 hours yesterday, and from 7 to 2.30 today. My supervisor wants me to go to her office location on Monday instead of Wednesday so we can work together in person to iron out details, make corrections, etc. But she told me I did a very good job with it. Of course, I knew there would be corrections and changes. There are always some. The relationship was very complex. And I understand it perfectly. And that's important to me. I know what I'm doing and what I'm talking about. I'm very confident we'll have this all ready to go by Monday 4 pm. Right now, my brain hurts just thinking about this assignment. I need the weekend break from it. My Tina wanted to play today. She likes for me to throw her a plastic spiral toy down the stairs. Then she chases it and brings it back to me so I can throw it again But today I couldn't. I needed to finish that project. She was sitting by me and crying. Thanks for all the advice of how to deal with mom. I know she worries. I think mostly she means well, but as I get older I have come to realize she has certain characteristics I don't like at all. There's an element of control to the constant asking and meddling. She's also very manipulative, which I only realized a couple of years ago. She would tell me to choose, but if I choose something different from what she already knows she wants, she starts finding fault with my choice. So she wants X, but wants me (or whoever) to pick X.

Freezing my ass of at a football game waiting for halftime to get here so the band can leave.
DS bought his car today. I let him handle the haggling (which went nowhere) but I had to come down for the last part of it to write the check since they don't do ACH transfers...and he has no checks. Of course now that we get it home I discovered a rock chip on the hood that was pretty bad. He's going to take it back tomorrow to see if they can at least touch it up so it doesn't rust or start to flake.
He also has a lease for an apartment now but is going to wait until Tuesday when they're down there to sign it to at least confirm with a live person at the office that it all is legit. Apparently long distance rental scams is a big thing now. People show up at houses or apartments ready to move in and find out it wasn't for rent and someone stole all the money they'd sent. I'm not too worried because he's dealing through the apartment website and has called them several times, its not just through online interaction. Also they aren't asking for a deposit ahead of time. Its due at move in.

I had a not so great work week, so I just did some garden therapy. I'm going to wash up and enjoy an adult beverage, and DH is grilling out. TGIF.

Good morning, able invisipeeps, administrators of your complicated lives, watching offspring adult and not, applying for jobs, decorating for Halloween, managing mothers and pouring your own Cheerios. Welcome to Saturday. I hope your day is one of simple ease after a demanding week. Today I'll finish all the things preparatory for tomorrow. I found the grate that DH thought was missing. THere are only two and they were on top of each other, so he thought there was one and assumed he'd chucked out the other(s). So we're in business to try out the grill today. I'm glad. It's much better than using the broiler for everything. Beef shish kebabs--I bought some prime sirloin for these, chicken satay that DD is making peanut sauce for, grilled shrimp, grilled potatoes and bacon-wrapped scallops. Yes, we really did need the grill. The house is clean except I need to touch up the bathroom and kitchen after I do today's baking, of birthday cake, brownies and Rice Krispies treats since 3 of the attendees are children. I like them too. DD is feeling much better now. She went to PT on Thursday and has 2 gigs lined up for her other job as a flu shot clinic nurse. Both are in companies near Boston. But she'll be making money and she's found some jobs for which she's well qualified including clinical coordinator (thanks, NomoreDramaQ1015). I'm going to help her touch up her resume. Yesterday the sun rose again, a quintessential early October dawn:

It’s nearly 3 am and I’m up. We got in around 4 yesterday and I lasted until about 9 last night.
Got my backpack emptied, but not my suitcase. I’ll do that today. Most of it goes into the laundry anyway. I guess between TD and myself, the washer and dryer is going to get a workout.
Flights were good, other than we were delayed nearly 30 min leaving Bordeaux and only had a 2 hour layover in Amsterdam. That is a huge freaking airport and once we got off the connection, we had to choose a direction to walk as there were not monitors everywhere. Wound up needing to go from concourse B to E, and thru passport control. Thats getting increasingly streamlined, but so many people do not follow directions, I saw one guy put his unopened passport under the scanners. Exactly what good is that?
We were able to use NEXUS flying in, which *should* have helped, but the idiots tried to use their passport on the scanners rather than NEXUS cards. Normally, it spits out a slip that you give as you exit baggage claim, but we had to wait in a long line of people, as there was someone at the exit wanting to see your paper before leaving the area. It would have been faster not to use NEXUS!
I have a feeling today’s going to be ugly. I need to get to the salon and get this polish off and my toes done. 6 weeks is just a little too long for a pedicure. I’ll be doing naked toes for awhile.
