Hugs Pink Cashmere ! Hang on because better days are ahead, even if we don't see them right now. It's been a pissy week here. I've been going a few rounds with SS on behalf of DS, and it happened again this past week. They don't make it clear how to help your disabled family member. They don't answer very direct questions (it's like talking to a politician). Even rewording your questions, and asking again, you get very evasive answers. You do the best you can with the very limited information they give you. Then, if you make a mistake because they don't/won't tell you the best option, then they penalize your relative. I cannot even express how many times I've asked for guidance from them, and all I hear is "we're not allowed to tell you what to do". WTE?!? I'm trying to make a difficult life go just a little easier for that family member, and whether they're prohibited from telling you their best options, or they don't want to, then I'm stuck cleaning up the mess. What really made my blood boil was when this particular employee implied that because DH & I "chose our current living arrangement", that is, having DS live with us for the time being, it is somehow our fault. He has dealt with some changing health issues in the last 10 years, and I'll be damned if I'll "turn him over" to an uncaring system that merely warehouses disabled adults. DD has seen what we've been through, and is willing to take over once we're too old to oversee his care, but the process is a hot mess, and we're actually in one of the "good" states. Ok, rant over. What SSA doesn’t tell you is that people on SSI are expected to pay for their own living expenses. If someone else pays for their living expenses, it gets deducted from their SSI. One way to get around this problem is for your child to pay you rent to cover their room & board. It’s sad when people can’t survive on $943/ month and then get penalized for getting help. SSA is concerned about running out of funds so they can’t tell you what is most beneficial for you. To get the most beneficial advice, you need to hire an advocate, an attorney or consult with an agency such as TASH.

Soupandstew not allowing natural gas in new buildings does make getting a generator more difficult. But propane can be used ( as long as that’s not outlawed!). We have a propane generator cause we don’t have gas. Deisel can also be used . These of course are all energy rich not sure solar panels could be used unless battery research gets better. I’m surprised assisted living and bigger apartment buildings don’t have generators, thought that would be required. Most subdivisions here ban propane and diesel storage tanks for safety reasons due to small lot sizes. Newer subdivisions do not even bring in natural gas lines as it's very expensive so the properties are all electric. Newer apartment construction also has no natural gas supply for both safety and cost reasons. Our 2021 winter electric outage problem was actually due to the failure of natural gas generation along with cloud cover and snow affecting solar panels while icing killed the wind generators. Sadly our wise state politicians de-regulated the electric suppy industry years back so our CenterPoint is a monopoly and they act like it.

Since they don't/won't tell you how much is appropriate, it's a huge guessing game. It's a no-win situation for parents. We have already spoken with an attorney. He says not many win going up against SS, even on appeal. I've never heard of TASH until today, so I guess I'll be looking into them. Thanks for the tip!

do any of the rest of you cook with propane? the learning curve has been vertical here, but I just tried cooking a brand of rice I haven't cooked here yet, and it was a mess. specifically looking for tips on Carolina brand white rice, and cooking on propane. I did exactly what I normally do for Uncle Ben's basic white rice and the pot boiled over a little a few times as well as the rice being clumpy. package directions are the rice:water ratio I uses, and the 20min cook time I already knew was way too long. do I need to rinse this like sushi rice or something? I don't even know where to start. Do you have a rice cooker? That would be the easiest solution for rice and risotto. If not, add more water. I use 2.5 cups of water per cup of rice for a gas stove. After the water boils, use the lowest setting possible. If that is still too high, place something metal between the burner and the pan such as a vegetable steamer that folds flat.

TASH is The Association for the Severely Handicapped I just saw that Helpishere.org helps with SSI and disability issues. They are a non profit law firm dedicated to these issues.

Debating. This is already going to be an expensive couple of months for me what with vet visits and oil change/maintenance for my car but then my phone decided to do a suicide leap across the bathroom into the shower and cracked the damn screen in a new place. Apparently my phone doesn't like bathrooms because it's the second time it's done this, albeit different bathroom. Now I have to decide if I want to go get a new phone or see if smacking this one around will keep it going. Not that it's working gangbusters for me right now but I just don't really feel like going. Ugh. I'm too tired for this.

After the water boils, use the lowest setting possible. If that is still too high, place something metal between the burner and the pan such as a vegetable steamer that folds flat. so, I'm fine with the rice I typically use. last night was using some of the open 20lb bag that mooch gave me after they lost their pup. it did not cook remotely close to the same way as what I typically use. the pot boiled over some, there was rice scorched to the bottom of the pot at the end of the same cook time, and most of it was sticky and clumpy. I might just give the bag back to them, TBH. as far as risotto, I found an Instant Pot method that works consistently perfectly, every time. 2:1 liquid-to-arborio, cook under pressure for 6min, immediately release pressure and stir in cheese after opening the lid. anything else you wanna add in, do it as you would and when you would if you were cooking stovetop.

I just saw a mouse on the patio. I know the yard is a disaster but the patio is the most together part of the house inside and out so I'm pretty annoyed to see one there in the middle of the day.
I was working on the house today even before the mouse. I don't know what has been wrong with me but I've really let things go. Dh is also working on his piles.

So when playing on ebay pay attention to which lot of earrings you bid on and wait for the confirmation email. Don't think you made a mistake and click on what turned out to be another different lot.
You will now be the proud owner of 4lbs of earrings.🤯
Gwen said she'll go through them with me.

Getting some rain at the moment, but at least the yard work is done. Made some banana bread also. Need to find a dress for the wedding, but that will be tomorrow.

Scratching. The mosquitoes pre-dawn at the beach were particularly voracious today. Normally there are none due to prevailing winds. I was outside for 10 minutes last night with the cat. I have 8 mosquito bites. Most of them on my legs, through the pants. WTF

Ran errands all morning, came home to DH wanting to reconfigure the laundry room. OK, figured out a plan for the new softener setup that should work. Then he wanted to go through the shelving in plans to replace, he was prepared to throw everything in the trash. 99% of it should have gone into his building/workshop. I may hoard food, but I do not hoard tools and such.
At least when his dad drove over he cut him off and is dealing with him. I think I'm done for the day. I definitely need a nap, because I'm feeling a little bit 🔪 .
PS - DH got up as I was leaving and did nothing after I left, including opening up the house. It is now 83 outside. I was confined to a 10 ft by 3 foot room with a man who is 6 ft 4 and has a wing span of 8 feet. We've been married for 15 years, I'm used to dodging elbows but this is too much today.
And now he wants replace the storm door on the front of the house. Dear lord, please get this man back to work. I will happily pay for other people to do this work.

We've had a full day.
The missy fished and caught her butt.
Then we got a violin for her.
I'm tired.

I have 8 trays of apple chips in the dehydrator and everything is cleaned up in the kitchen. I think I have enough apples for one and a half more batches, so I am planning to do another batch tomorrow and the remainder on Monday morning. I discovered that it is much less messy doing it all by myself in a small area. I have memories of making them with MIL and SIL and having the whole kitchen covered with apple juice, but making them myself this morning I was able to keep the mess to a minimum.

For the apples, I have a combo apple peeler, corer, and slicer, which takes most of the work out of it. I just stick the apple on the device, spin the handle until the apple has gone through it, slice it in half, and then place the pieces on the tray. I have let my weight get out of control, so I am planning to stop eating desserts and have apple chips instead, so I am making a huge supply of them. I just love the things.

My house is still a mess, boxes not unloaded, to much in cabinets and closets. I'm frustrated, guess more is going to have to go. Hubs cannot find blinds now that have end mounts, they are top and side. Maybe we can order them, the ones in here have a plastic piece in the top that has deteriorated and broke so you can't hook the loose cord to it. I tried tying some but then they are lopsided as it makes them a bit to short. Very frustrating as otherwise they are very good quality blinds, its just age. Besides that I really like them, been trying to find replacement pieces, most everything else is available.
Don't get me started on aid for disabled. I still don't know if Medicaid will cover everything with her part A, B, and D like a supplement would. And she is going too have to pay out of pocket for deductible on drugs I guess. No one explains anything, it is beyond frustrating. As our case worker said, its designed to not pay you basically to help them, but the state offers little or nothing either. I do the same, I take enough money out for rent to keep DD under the threshold for eligibility and then use that for her needs too. But I can't tell them that, its just rent. And that's what she would need is $943 a month to meet the requirements. Can you imagine someone living on that. They are pulling the rugs out from under the disabled, the parents, and giving them no alternative. I have to dig in and find what I can do soon but right now and still dealing with getting her into doctors and getting her meds. We have hubs set up with doctors but he still have to move his supplement and get a new drug coverage here. I think I'm ok, not sure yet, but DD is my challenge right now. Thank God, I'm still not dealing with MIL too, I think I would lose what mind I have left. I'm also thankful I'm still able to deal with this, but for how much longer?

We are in for the night. Went to see a couple castles, gorgeous drive along very narrow (not quite as narrow as the Ring of Kerry) but narrow. Then we went looking for a place for dinner. Found parking, had to walk several blocks in a pedestrian area only to find out the restaurant is closed permanently. Decided to stop for a pizza, which was quite good. Reservations necessary (which we did not have) so we sat outside under the awning. It wasn’t cold, just drizzly and we could watch the people go by.
My sister broke in my new stove. I think she’s a convert to induction.
Off to Sligo tomorrow.

I believe our country has its priorities backwards. We should be helping the disabled, the veterans & those with mental health issues long before we throw money at failing companies & funding wars. Our health care system is a disgrace. Those who need help the most are being nickeled & dimed to death while corporations & other powerful interests get pretty much as much money as they want, millions of dollars. Our disabled, veterans & people in crisis are told to wait, 6 months, a year or whatever, for what they need to survive, and when many do reach out for help, it's because they are already out of options. We must do better.

We both woke up this morning feeling like normal humans. I told DH you can't really realize how good you feel most of the time, relatively speaking, until you feel like complete crap for a couple of days.

I am disappointed in some of this. My judgement or vision let me down this time. On the surface this place looked great. Hubs just said quit trying to fix these blinds and I finally found ones that cover the whole window. We decided not to get the ones like we had but found theses that are side mounts like we wanted. I know that even very good dual pane windows let in cold if they have some age on them. So we ordered 9 blinds at $85 each which is a good price. They are the 2 inch faux wood blinds that are like the ones in here now. Also a 144 inch rod for the living room and 2 45 inch in here too, the rest are fine. I think the blinds in the bathroom and kitchen are ok but they are short ones so won't cost much to replace. I did not see half of these were in poor condition. But again this stuff is aesthetics. We will get there. Now to go buy more paint, 2 yellows this time. Or take a nap first, that sounds better!

JFC. DH has removed the shelving. I'm very unhappy. Pray for him. I’ll pray for YOU!

I've had a low level migraine since Wednesday morning. It's not sending me to bed, but I also cannot shake it. Today's a day at home with no plans. The only irritating thing is that our construction guy is here putting in safety fencing on our porch because he removed the old porch railing and the new porch railing is not up to snuff. So, that's loud on a day I'd prefer no loudness.
College football and chores is the day's plans.

Good grief.
I understand that folks need to be cautious.
I got most of our 529s squared away. I just need to roll over money from DS's 529 into his roth.
I also thought I would tackle that, and rebalancing his Roth. it's all in a cash fund. I need to move it to something else.
I grabbed DH when we opened the account, because his info was easier.
I can't figure out how to do the things I need to do online.
So. We call. They can't/won't talk to me until DH weighs in.
Good grief.

Well, we got DS's roth in something other than cash.
He has to open up a new account in his name, and then he'll be in charge of his Roth. Then we just have to figure out the 529 roll over portion.
And then we have to move his taxable to a different firm. And then, I think, we're done.
Tomorrow morning is when I get to deal with the mess that is our checking account.
I should be happy for the progress. I am grateful to be a have. it's a lot of work.

I've been pretty productive today. dishwasher has been run, emptied, and reloaded with what didn't fit on the first pass. I've done and put away all of the towels and couch throw blanket laundry. a small load of clothes are about to go in the dryer now. I've also cleaned the bathrooms and decided not to mess with my Blackstone not fully lighting on one side until the morning. I discovered a nest under the cast iron, I'll bag that up early before they all wake up. S just texted to bail on coming by for the game tomorrow, so it's not as important that it be functional now. 🤷♀️ it might be time to park myself on the deck with a glass of wine and some college football.
