When the girls were learning long division, I could not comprehend the convoluted method they were being taught. Both were frustrated at understanding how they were being taught. I showed DD1 how I learned it and the lightbulb went on for her. However, even though her answer was correct, she would get marked down because she wasn’t using the method taught. When DD2 got to long division, she adamantly refused to learn any way other than how they were being taught. I couldn’t help her because I couldn’t understand it either. that's crap. as long as she's clearly showing how she got her correct answer, she shouldn't be penalized. it's not like she just plunked down the answer after putting it in a calculator. You would like the way DN3 teaches math. He says our brains do not work the same about most things but especially math. He teaches kids several ways to get to the same correct answer. They get to choose which way of thinking works in their mind. He tried to teach me one of the new math agendas and I could not get it. I was taught the times tables, etc. and my brain has thought that way far too many years to undo it now. His response was some of his students brains think like my brain. But my way got the same answer as the new math. Neither way is wrong. There are no absolutes when he is your teacher.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUt it's the new way!! I did multiplication on my fingers!! Of course I hated math with a passion but it worked for me. Also glad my son had a natural aptitude for math cause counting on me to help with homework would have been a disaster yeah, no. it's a power trip for the teacher, or whoever is insisting it's this way or nothing. same argument as whatever the hell "new math" was back in the 80s. I missed that by a few years, and I'm thankful. I tried to figure some of it out as an adult and was completely lost. if the student is showing the work that brings them to a correct answer, then they got the answer correct. end of story. I always figure 1 plus 1 is going to equal 2. Never understood the need to go half way around the world to figure that out. Of course a few times I thought I might need to count on my toes too. Some things are just basic! But like I said this is coming from someone who hated math.

One of the tricks I use to get dinner on the table, is to thaw out two or three pieces of meat at the same time. Now you have to use it up and figure out a meal plan. By the time you get through those three things, you will have some leftovers to get to the end of the week. Let the crock pot be your friend. Beef chuck roast or a pork butt in the crock pot will make dinner while you are away. We cook chicken breast several pounds at a time because we like chicken salad sandwiches or cooked chicken on lettuce salads. Ground beef is made into patties before it is frozen. This works well for portion control and for cooking from frozen. Two patties make tacos for two people, you get the idea. We also fillet chicken breasts into cutlets and then freeze individual portions. They cook fast on the contact grill for sandwiches or salads. We have been struggling with wanting to cook this summer too. I blame it on the heat. One more week and we should be moving into soup weather. I love me some soup! Good luck with your kitchen adventures Pink. Our problem is that we are burnt out on beef roasts, chicken breasts, chicken wings, salmon, salads, pork chops, bbq, all the ways we cook ground beef, broccoli, spinach, carrots, etc. I love potatoes any way they are cooked, and I am even burnt out on them. We need new ways to prepare what we eat, because we are burnt out on the ways we know how to cook it, if that makes sense. I get overwhelmed looking for recipes for something different. Thank you for wishing me good luck. So far this trip, I have had a pasta dish that included leeks, rigatoni, mushrooms and Italian sausage. This combo never went through my brain, but it was damn good. I’ll be trying to remake it. We had roasted veggies at the wedding and they included a few veggies I don’t normally include. I keep forgetting about parsnips, but they really do change the dish when tossed into the regular mix. I just had a bowl of fish chowder with dill. I’m going to play around with this too when I get home. I have eaten scones….lots of ‘em. I now need to figure out clotted cream. I had some fabulous cheddar scones in New Zealand last year, I need to figure those out too.

I haven't done a lot of cooking for the last 30 years. I was surviving on frozen food. That all changed when I discovered the freshly prepared meals that I go pick up weekly.
It's been fun to watch their garden grow and be used in the menu items. Yes, it's expensive but it's a lot healthier than anything I have ever eaten and it's not fast food.

yum. I had a divine pasta with a creamy walnut sauce, at a factory cafeteria in Bologna one work trip eons ago. I haven't tried in awhile, but I definitely tried to recreate that one when I first got home. that may have to be on the to-do list again.

I second (or third, fourth, whatever) trying in store. I also recommend buying in store. That is big shipment and I know Amazon is great about returns, but that would be a headache and a half to return if you open it and find something damaged or missing. DD had one for probably close to 15 years, but solid wood from a local store. I will say though that those slats under the mattress are always flimsy and break easily. We used them but also put a thick piece of plywood under the slats after 1 broke.

I keep trying to get the green chili recipe out of the owner of one of the restaurants we go to in Estes Park who is a friend of ours. I tried when we went on Thanksgiving to get her buffalo chili recipe out of her with no luck. It frustrates me I am not sure what she puts in that makes it so different than when I try to replicate it at home. I need to bring some home with me and convince my coworker to run it on the GC-MS.

I went to the mat about this! When I was doing the CAD classes, a few classes were about changing units. Ummmmm, 30+ years of lab, I can do this multiple ways, I have TAUGHT it multiple ways. The way the instructor taught was the way that I found my students were most likely to make an error (inevitably expensive). So I used the method I taught the students, and failed the assignment. I was told by the engineering instructor if I ever showed my engineering supervisor my calls, I’d be laughed out of the building. So I went to TD’s engineering firm (I knew a lot personally) and asked them. They didn’t give a shit about how you get the answer, as long as you get there correctly. Not only that, a few employees absconded with my method because it was so very easy to determine where you goofed and they liked it better than their’s! So it happens all the way up to technical college too.

I never ever buy beds, mattresses or any kind of furniture online.
Partly because my house was built in 1942 and I really need to see it in person to get an idea of exactly how big it is. Even then we've miscalculated, getting our new bed frame together was a challenge. It fits but there wasn't much room left.
Beds I spend a lot of time in those so I want to be able to try before I buy. Turns out I loathe Purple mattresses. The whole egg crate thing gave me major sensory issues I would have been driven insane sleeping on it. I was not impressed with temperpedic especially for the price tag.
I think we ended up with a Serta or the NFM house brand I am not sure.
I always wanted a day bed when I was younger. They can be impractical though I had a friend growing up who had one and she said it could be really awkward to sleep in.

This is a fabulous recipe. A pain in the ass to make, but soooo good! Damn, it won’t link. Google Andrew Zimmern green chile chili. ETA: I found a jar of roasted Hatch chilis at Costco. That took some of the pain out of this. I also used cheap pork scraps from Restaurant warehouse (a restaurant supply store) and this worked well too.

We had the same issue with math with my kids in the 2010s. They had to show they got the answer as taught in what I think was called the new "common core" method. The kids knew the answers but could not work out that math. Neither could I, because it did not make any sense and was more work. That was a very difficult couple of years. Example: 21+12 easy enough to add, but no they had to to 20+10 and then 1+2. I do not remember what the instructions were if a 1 had to carried over like 28+15.

I tried to learn common core to help my grandsons. It made some sense to round each number up or down then deal with easy whole numbers. But then you had to factor in the small numbers left over anyway. That was even talked about in the late 60's or 70's but only as a gimmick method. Better to learn basic addition and how to carry. BTW they were also frustrated by having to show your work. Took twice as long to get the answer. Trivia question for you/us oldtimers. Remember "reverse Polish notation"?

Some common core math I don't understand because I was taught a different way and that was the "only" way and I am programmed to do math that way regardless. It is really hard to get my brain to adapt to a different way of doing it. I probably could but it's just easier to make DH handle math homework. But some of the stuff that the kids showed me really clicked. Their teachers approach it as there is more than one way to solve a problem and if you can back up your answer then do whatever works for your brain. I WISH they had done that when I was in school. It was "this way or you're wrong" when I was in school. I've since learned struggling as badly as I did learning multiplication the traditional way is a sign of dyslexia but not that anyone noticed or cared in the 90s. My mind was blown when Abby and Gwen showed me several of the ways they learned to it besides route memorization of the tables. As it stands because of the way I was taught I was in remedial math all the way up until my sophomore year of college and did REALLY piss poor on the ACT because of it. It wasn't till 2018 when I took statistics that things clicked and I almost got an A. In statistics you are taught up front there is more than one way to reach your conclusion. Plus I had context since it is part of my job. I damn near cried when I saw my final grade. It was affirmation I am not stupid, I am just wired differently and didn't mesh with the train of thought when it came to teaching back then. The only reason I didn't get an A is my dumb ass didn't catch my answers weren't saving on a quiz and I hit send my results before I noticed and it was too late. That took me down to an 87% which is still extremely impressive for me math wise. I had to keep checking it because I am used to being on the verge of failing.

After getting really upset with the office where I live, I found out today, the office doesn't have anything to do with packages.
We have a locker system (Luxor), that delivery people have access to.
The office does an audit of the packages in the lockers, periodically, to check for any issues, or errors.
I apologized for getting upset with the people in the office and for my misunderstanding. Ugh.

Maybe the carrier didn't know how to access the lockers? But that doesn't help me.

I had nose bleeds in college. They said they could do a nasal cauterization, but it would need to be repeated every few years. Instead they gave me A & D ointment. I've been using it for 60 years. Also helped during my running years for moisture.

We lived in Italy for a time when my DS was in 5th grade. He went to public school there. He knew how to do long division but the way they did it there was incomprehensible to me, his dad (an engineer) and the other American engineer working with him. Of course DS had to show his work, which resulted in no answer.
The teachers asked me to keep him home the day they were doing standardized math testing. They didn't want him to pull down the score for the school. I think they thought American schools were doing a piss poor job of teaching kids math.
This was in the mid-90s.

And in case anyone is wondering the new biodegradable eco friendly napkins they have in our work cafeteria DO NOT hold blood! I ended up having to make a run for it into the next building where the bathroom was so I could get some good old fashioned industrial paper towels. Pretty sure I cleaned it all up I was being as careful as possible but there may be an email sent out asking who was murdered in the women's bathroom.

Hopefully this one is it. I really like it. I would lean into that mid century modern style if I owned that house. I would have to throw some cocktail parties around that bar wearing a matching red outfit! It seems like a lot of house for the price. I also like the laundry room/second kitchen in the basement. It is nice to have that finished space.

(Changing the topic here.) Is anyone else here having issues with eating red pasta sauce? I'm not yet retirement age, but in the past couple of years I've been getting more heartburn, and last night I actually got sick (all acid came up). I just don't know if it's an aging issue, or if they're changing the ingredients on the sauces you buy. Maybe I need to learn to make sauce from scratch? I just don't know what to think...

I have not eaten jarred pasta sauce in a while though. I buy canned tomatoes (crushed and puree) and add my own seasonings. Easy peasy. I do puke up stomach acid quite often though, normally late evening - sometimes in the middle of the night. It is something that I should have looked into.

Can you have packages shipped to your DD? This is my plan for future packages, for sure. I talked to her (DD) about it yesterday. It's just annoying and my apt mgmt doesn't care. I send everything to my parents house for the most part.
