School starts tomorrow in my area and it's going to be interesting. The state took over the local district so more than 2000 principals have quit or were fired, there are more than 600 uncertified teachers, they cut bus routes way back so many kids have to walk 3 miles to get the bus, and some schools are still covered in hurricane debris because the district let most of the maintenance staff go too. The City and County have stepped in, along with teams of volunteer parents, to cut grass and remove fallen trees but it's not pretty at many campuses. And in other news, the mayor and new police chief want to hire younger officers but that requires action by the state legislature to allow law enforcement personnel under the age of 21 to carry a weapon. What could possibly go wrong with an 18 or 19-year-old rookie having tactical weapons? School also starting here; because of that, we are waiting to go to Costco until tomorrow. We are low on teachers, bus drivers, and admin support in some counties here, too. Not dire level, but the county is having issues getting their hiring vs. budget together and getting everyone on board on time.
I am getting a lot of fluids, thanks to a long trail run this morning. Lots of shade, but really humid. The trees, grass areas, canal levels, and lakes etc. do look good out there, thanks to the final arrival of the rainy season. Finished vacuuming and will allow the dishwasher to cool to empty it.
DD1 fled teaching at one of the Florida universities at the end of 2022 when the DeSantis administration started restricting what can be discussed/taught.

So I can have the house if I want it. I'm hesitating though. It's a very nice house at a good price. The payment isn't much more than my current rent. I think I'm just gun shy about signing on for so much debt.
ETA: I rolled the dice and low balled it since it has been on the market so long. It worked. I'm probably in the minority as far as my opinion goes, but I honestly don't think you are "gun shy" because of the debt. FWIW, I truly think that you know deep down (gut feeling) that this house is not what you really want in a "forever home" and you only made an offer because you are feeling somewhat pressured to get out of where you live now. If it were me, I'd back away and keep looking. The perfect house for YOU is out there. I can extend my lease. I can do one month, 6 months or a year. They will work with me. I did want a finished basement, but I have the two tiny rooms to put the gym and office in, which is what I wanted it for. The neighborhood is what I want. The house needs some work, but with the lower price I can afford to do it my way. Plus, I can always sell the house later. I also am tired of living in a complex. My uncle also volunteered to help me paint before I move in. I'll have 2-3 weeks between closing and having to turn in my keys. I think instead of taking a whole week off, I'll take a few day here and a few there so I can move in stages.

My niece ended her teaching tenure last year. Same reason. She loved, loved, loved the kids. She hated the politics. She hated not being able to talk to the kids and have and keep their trusted conversations. She was also a swim coach. It meant a lot to the kids that she was there. But she was not able to deal with the meanness of the principal who was very vocally pro-DeSantis.

I just talked to Mister, he told me that OD’s key OG doesn’t even work. I am really puzzled about what happened last night.
Then there was the AirTag a couple weeks ago that we never did find.
One day last week, I was laying in the bed and Mister was standing up on his side of the bed, we were chatting. The ceiling fan started spinning. The remote for it was on my nightstand, behind me, I was facing Mister. Mister said he hear it click “on” just before it started spinning. I got the remote and turned it off.
AND, there are “smart” bulbs in the lamps on our night stands. You can set them to come on or go off at certain times, adjust the brightness or even the color, blah blah blah. This morning at 4:47, both lamps came on, which woke me up.
The lamps didn’t wake Mister up this morning, but he did hear the AirTag and saw the ceiling fan come on by himself. Otherwise, I’d really wonder if I was losing it and imagining all of this strange stuff that’s started happening.
I told him today to please ask his Mom to stop wrecking my nerves if that’s her playing pranks. For real though, idk what the heck is going on. This is not the first time with the ceiling fan, last year it started spinning by itself twice in the same day. Those times it wasn’t actually on, it stopped spinning by itself. Nothing like that had happened before then. I don’t like it.

Pink Cashmere I hope things are better this morning. I've never heard of duplicating key fobs and I can't imagine how you can protect against that? The old school steering wheel locks always seemed like a way to ward of crimes of opportunity, not intent. One of my dogs may not be distrustful of an intruder but would still be interested in them and the other loses her damn mind even when people come over. It drives me nuts but I like it too for the alarm. I'm rambling now when I just want to say I hope things are ok and would love to hear that that they found an electrical short that can cause the lights to turn on and off - (I'm not sure if that is even a thing) Yes, they can duplicate your car fob from outside your house. There is something. Allen a faraday box or something you can put your keys in at night to avoid that. I still don’t know why the lights on OD’s car came on like that, but it sure scared me! We used a Faraday bag on some ds medical devices to stop signals from getting through. Cost has reallycome down if its the same thing. A couple times we didn't have it and had to leave it in the detached garage at the end of the property while updates were happening.

She told Mister she’s never known it to do that. But if I hadn’t been sitting outside as it was getting dark, I wouldn’t have seen it last night. They are supposed to be putting it in another shop tomorrow, so if it has some kind of electrical issue, maybe they’ll find out then.

You can always sell it later if it's not working for you. We said that when we bought this house and have been here 10 years. I refinanced twice, so now my payment is low. We are a few years older than you, but are really glad we don't have a basement or 2nd story. One level is much easier to maintain.

Pink Cashmere Some of our ceiling fans are sensitive to power fluctuations. Like if power goes out and clocks start flashing, the fan and light will turn on.

I had a broken leg, and then a blood clot, in my 40s. I spent about a month and a half on the couch in my family room. I didn't go upstairs during that time. (You don't want to know what shape the kids' rooms were in when I finally went upstairs.)
In my 50s I had five foot surgeries. By then I was living in a one-story house and it was difficult enough to navigate around on crutches. Forget about stairs.
Since then I lived for 5 years in a two-story condo. I can't tell you how many times I went up and down those stairs in the course of a day. Everything I needed at the moment seemed to be on the other floor.
With an aging population, I think resale value is quite good for a one-story home. For us old folks, it's the only way to go.

Pink Cashmere Whenever we have a power outage and the generator kicks in, the lights on the garage door openers light up. The doors don't open, but the lights come on as if the doors were being raised.

andi may have created a monster when she was here. in addition to the boneless pork chops I bought for the pups, I grabbed a package of country ribs and have them boiling right now for pozole. it's only a 1lb package, though, not the huge stockpot she made for us. but I'm coming down from being annoyed. I needed a can of hominy, and some cilantro. so I threw the pups in the car and did an errands loop. some genius thought it would be a fantastic idea to re-seal the majority of the parking lot immediately in front of the grocery store, at a coastal touristy location, on a fucking summer weekend. it's all taped off with caution tape, including the central entry at an intersection with lights. AYFKM? andi9899, Malarky - you've actually been to this plaza. it's closed off from the entry doors on the left, all the way over to just about the doorway to the packy on the right. I usually park over on the packy side as it's less likely to see wayward carriages. but not with dogs in the car for a quick run-in for two things. so I had to go back out to the main road and go past the closed intersection to come in from the other side. watch, they will do the next section next weekend. if they even waited til after Labor Day, it would make a hint of sense.

I have collapsed on the couch. Since Wednesday afternoon, we’ve had 13 house guests plus two more staying at my mother’s but spending the entire day here. We had a great time, but I shall now nap.

It's been a very intense and bizarre day on the community front beginning with a 2:30 a.m. email, sliding through a 59-minute phone call, and ending with an equally bizarre email just now. My phone is off, my pj's are going on, and I'm going to doze off to whatever DH has on the tv. Tomorrow is the usual cleaning and menu planning and Monday night is a board meeting, oh joy. Did you quit effective immediately or did you give them notice? I hope that is your last board meeting on Monday. I agreed to continue to the end of August. Depending on how tomorrow's meeting goes, there's a slim chance I will stay until December 31, the end of my term. I have no desire to heap burning coals on the president who is fighting an uphill battle with skill and integrity but I do have boundaries.

Little DD was sick all night with diarrhea. I had to get up with her to clean her up 3 times, 3 showers. Poor thing, I told her its probably some of this fast food junk we are eating. She is better this morning, but we were running out of clothes and towels, but we made it.
I'm getting ready to help hubs get stuff out for the other house. Sent the realtor a note we will be out of it completely today or tomorrow.
One of the neighbors told hubs she is leaving for 2 and a 1/2 weeks so they are already being neighbors. That's nice. I have to get ready, so later all.

FINALLY found my right orange Converse shoe.
Also found my black moccasins mate and reunited the pair.
Dang Wilbur likes to make off with our shoes.
I'm still missing one slipper and the left mate of my white old school leather converse.
I bought a new hanging shoe rack and I got a shoe box. Let's see him take my shoes now!😝

Tuned into "Outbreak".
I've been very vocal this weekend. DH is paying attention. For instance, I took Friday off and had a great day with DD (25). She hosted an out of town visitor the week before, a good friend. The friend suggested seeing the the new Deadpool movie and DD declined because "that's me and my mom's thing". ❤️
Anyway, going to bed Friday night I mentioned that I would wash the sheets Saturday. I corrected myself that the sheets need to be washed - I don't have to do it. DH is capable of using the washer. Guess who washed the sheets? Not me. He's paying attention now, cause I am burnt the fuck out and he knows it now.

I'm watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics and because of that I saw the medal ceremony for the women's marathon. I am baffled, baffled I tell you. Who knew there was a Dutch woman out there who thinks that if you go 26 miles you would run instead of just hopping on your bike? LOL
For the record, when I was much younger (like that running lady) riding our bikes >40 miles was quite common. We did not have a car until we moved to the US the first time when I was 28. I also walked a lot but running that far? NEVER

But it would take me quite a while for me to get anywhere close to 40 miles.

For a long time, we knew that if we couldn’t find a shoe, we should go look for it in the living room, where Boy his all of his “treasures”. Fortunately for us, he has stopped being the shoe bandit. Mister was a little slower than I was, with keeping my shoes in the closet so Boy couldn’t get them, so it was usually Mister that had to go look for a shoe in the living room. Mister has more than 1 pair of shoes that Boy clearly nibbled on lol.

Mister is irritated with me that I let all of the plants that were on the deck die. My tomatoes, and even my lemon trees.
We had to move it all onto the ground when we were having the deck repaired. Because it was all jumbled up together on the ground, Mister couldn’t cut the grass around all that stuff with the riding mower. The only way to cut that grass was with a weedeater. I can’t use the weedeater, because it is too heavy and makes my hands and shoulder hurt.
So the grass kept growing taller and taller, until I was afraid to even go out there and water stuff because one of those things could’ve been hiding in the tall grass. When I would ask Mister to go out there with me so I could tend to the plants, he would do it, but would huff and puff about it.
Then I started having issues and not feeling well, so I just stopped tending to it, because that was just one more thing for me to deal with trying to get my nerves right about, and because the grass was so tall. So it all died. And I pretty much don’t even care.
But he seems to care that I let everything die. Well sir, you knew what the issue was, that I was nervous about the grass being so high (almost to my knees right now) and if the plants were so important to you, maybe you could’ve cut the grass around them so I would’ve been more comfortable, watered them yourself, or at least not huff and puff when I asked you to go with me to tend to them.
Yes, it’s a lot of time and money wasted because I stopped watering them, but it was MY time and money spent on them, so I really don’t get why he is so irritated with me about it. If he’d just cut the grass down with the weedeater like I kept asking him to, I would’ve kept tending to the plants.
And as I was typing this NOW he’s out there with the weedeater, after it’s too late. I can’t make it make sense.

I'm watching the closing ceremonies of the Olympics and because of that I saw the medal ceremony for the women's marathon. I am baffled, baffle I tell you. Who knew there was a Dutch woman out there who thinks that if you go 26 miles you would run instead of just hopping on your bike? LOL For the record, when I was much younger (like that running lady) riding our bikes >40 miles was quite common. We did not have a car until we moved to the US the first time when I was 28. I also walked a lot but running that far? NEVER I really wish we had better bike trails/access to make bike commuting more possible. But it would take me quite a while for me to get anywhere close to 40 miles. You won't get me on a bike here. But once I've moved I fully intend to get back on one* - but only for short distances. The 100 miles/day, stay overnight and ride back the next day times are in my very distant past. I'm happy we did that when we were young but now it is BTDT- no regrets * planning to get an e-bike in Munich. Time will tell if it will actually happen
