Just returned from day tripping to the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. My wife got me a free ticket to the Temple since I am old enough for a free ticket. I told her that I do not need a free ticket regardless of age. Not sure how I feel about this since I just turned 60 a few days ago. I then asked my wife if this is also the policy for air travel within China and I got a laugh.

I am so glad this heat/humidity wave finally broke. Carrot and I are working a big music fest on Friday and it would have been unbearable if it had been like last Friday. The forecast now is 70 degrees and no rain. Nice. By working it in the afternoon we don't have to pay $110 to get in so 80's obsessed Carrot can see Journey that night and they will put $80 in his band account to boot. It's a hard deal to pass up, but the crowds are insane. I hate that part.
Jealous of your projected temps. Today is yet another day of highs in the low 90s with heat index expected to hit triple digits. I love the band, Journey. Only saw them once in person at an outdoor venue. I hated the crowds back then too. It took so long to just get out of the parking lot I never went back to that venue again. I should have just learned to leave early, which one hates to do at any live event, but it is better to leave early I think than to not go at all. I hope you both enjoy the music festival and multiple acts. Working events like this is a great way for Carrot to see musicians he likes and make money too. Is he planning to buy a concert t-shirt?

In the office to check the box this week. Over half the people will be out for one reason or another. The buildings just reopened Monday after being closed for two months due to high levels of bacteria in the water.
I brought 2 bottles of water with me and will buy more if needed. I'm out of here at 2:30 to go see the ENT.
I've been fighting sinus and ear stuff since mid July. I thought it was better but the descent to landing on Friday killed me. The ear pain has not gone away.
I go back on a plane Wednesday night so I'm getting checked out. I finally figured out last night that I'm tired because I've been in 8 states besides my own in the last two months.

you are light years more technologically literate than either of my parents. "old" is relative, and they are ancient where anything tech is concerned. Do they get statements mailed? yup.

I'm a luddite when it comes to technology. And also, I still get my statements mailed. Because I haven't had the time to switch out all of that to online.
I also really don't do social media all that much because I don't want to spend time I don't have on social media.

wow, hubs is mellowing in his old age. We are getting the roof and heat pump and he told me to go ahead and have flooring put in the bedrooms. I told him trying to keep this place "show ready" and dealing with the other is more than I can do. We will have carpet put in our bedroom and probably DD's too for now. She doesn't want carpet but we don't have time right now to put in laminate or hardwood for her and the flooring is too dirty to use, yuck, no surprise knew that the first time we looked at it. And the expense of putting either in is outrageous, so those we would do ourselves.
Hubs is starting to retape and bed the garage and get it ready for painting. He said he doesn't want to move stuff in and try to do that with all the drywall dust. He can't right now but he will put shelving all around it for things we don't use often, Christmas decorations and items like that. Those folks lived there 20 years and never finished the garage inside.
He said next year we are going to screen in half the deck and make a workshop on the other part, its at least 50 foot long. Then he wants to put up solar panels, I'm surprised he wants to do all this. He chuckled, and told me the house was very pretty but not very practical but he isn't unhappy. Son has been over talking with him and I can see now that is going to be good for both of them. Something they have both needed for years. Hubs said we are now 5 miles from son instead of 3.
The only 2 rooms that need painted are the bedrooms, the rest needs washed down. We decided we want to get in the house and cut some of our expenses. But hubs said its going to be in the 90's next week so AC here for us. We are getting estimates for the roof and heat pump on the 12th, so that's good. They did the work here and it was great.
I'm going to try washing the outside windows with Dawn, it's just I have to rinse them but that's ok. I bought a mop to reach them. I may put dishwasher rinse in the sprayer and see if I can keep from getting in behind the shrubs trying to dry them and maybe it will just rinse off for now. All the shrubs need trimmed back but not till fall. Can only do so much at once so need to space it out even if I want it all done at once.
I slept yesterday went to bed at 9:30 and up at 4 for about an hour, I'm going back to bed. It's 58 out but hubs said its to get in the 90's by the end of this week so we won't move yet. But I'm going to start taking things over. We left the babies over there.
Today I'm making hair appointments and getting new cat beds and a scratching post deal for them if I can find what I want. Then take care of other issues after our hair is done. Drivers license, bank accounts, and check with Indiana on Medicaid cut off. Back to bed.

Speaking of social media I made the mistake of clicking on a post going on about cow's milk. Wow there were A LOT of people in there going on about how pasteurization is a conspiracy to keep us from getting the full health benefits of milk. I've cultured raw milk. You DO NOT want to drink raw milk. You've gotten lucky if to date you haven't gotten sick. Wish I had kept some photos of some of the plates to be like "THIS is what you are drinking in the name of being "healthy" people" My grandma grew up on a farm. She said she wouldn't ever go back to drinking raw milk. She saw a lot of people get sick and women lose their babies drinking raw milk. She said why on Earth would you CHOOSE to drink raw milk? She drank raw milk not because they were health nuts who realized the value but because they had no other choice! She was always flabbergasted when we'd talk about this stuff that people would deliberately choose to go backwards rather than recognize what a miracle things like pasteurization and vaccinations truly are.

Did you even read the post you quoted? Yes. Because I don't know why your area is hot. It can be because of lack of inventory like Covid times. It can be a seller's market for many reasons. You obviously know your areas of KC. The fact that you believe only good homes get multiple offers on day one triggers me. I have been following and buying in the NJ real estate market from 1985 to the present. So almost 40 years. I was good enough during the last time I bought that I could predict with a high degree of accuracy the sell price and what it would appraise for. Can you? If so, I'm out of this thread and will entertain myself elsewhere. Yeah, go be triggered elsewhere. I don't need to explain anything to you. Not sure why you care what the KC housing market is like anyway.

Damn right they are not "that old"! I'll be 73 in October and, while I am not as young as I used to be, I sure as heck am NOT old. Older ok, but old? Nope! you are light years more technologically literate than either of my parents. "old" is relative, and they are ancient where anything tech is concerned. Girl! I can't sometimes. My mom is worse than my dad about it. She never learned how to use a computer and thinks everything has to be done in person. It drives me crazy.

We saw them maybe 10-12 years ago. If they still have the same lead singer it’s a great story-little Filipino guy who sounds EXACTLY like Steve Perry. He used to make a living on Youtube basically doing Journey karaoke and no one believed he wasn’t just lip syncing.

I asked to look at the house with no basement. It looks really nice. I've lived here in the city my entire life and have never had to head to the basement for a storm. We'll see what it looks like. It has everything else that I want.

My mom is worse than my dad about it. She never learned how to use a computer and thinks everything has to be done in person. It drives me crazy. My dad got my grandma a computer so she could stream some minister online she liked. She just could not figure out how to use it. He finally snapped, drove all the way up there, threw the computer in the trunk of the car and drove off with it. She also insisted on doing everything in person. It was a nightmare getting everything set up so I could do things online. She would have her retirement account checks from Wichita sent to her in the mail to Treynor, then have my grandfather drive all the way to 108th in Omaha to deposit it. That was SUPER fun to untangle. My dad isn't great with computers my mom was better at it but he at least tries and is willing to learn. We did get into it when he was trying to create a word document and I asked him when the hell he got so old. I told him only use copy and paste I got it all set up for you TOUCH NOTHING ELSE!

The last time a business suggested she use a computer to log on to get rewards, etc, my mom asked if they would buy her a computer, because she was a poor senior and couldn't afford to purchase one herself. That check out girl was amazing to handle mom's response with grace. I was pretty mortified when I heard mom say that. I have also decided that while it would be easier for mom to pay her bills online, it's better for her to pay bills in person with cash. That at least is enough to get her out of the house/moving for a little bit. If mom didn't have her errands to do, she would be in the house all the time, mostly watching tv. Once she gets to barely moving, she's really going to decline.

It's getting harder and harder for people to ignore technology. My neighbors that had no internet and no smart phones finally took the plunge a couple years ago because it was getting almost impossible to go to a professional football game or concert without a smart phone to store the ticket. Now they're sending videos back and forth to their son/grandson all the time on Snapchat. When I was on the cruise last year, tons of stuff like check-in, booking excursions, and communicating with others in our group was through the app.

I have to send my mom a new Excel file every year with tabs to track medical expenses. She can't figure it out. I just rename the file at this point. She also hasn't qualified to deduct any portion of medical expenses in over a decade probably closer to two decades.
I had her last laptop shipped to me. I set it up and then handed it over.
But tell me how she can run a whole operating room of a fairly large hospital? I think they have at least 10 rooms going at a time. The scheduling, the supplies, rotating through rooms so people get breaks. It baffles me.

It’s sort of mindblowing how opposite my mother is to MIL. Concierge medicine: MIL was falling all over herself to justify $1400 a year to continue to be patients, bc it made her feel rich and special. Meanwhile my mother fired her dentist over $200 a year. Mother is insisting she can do everything all by herself no help needed; MIL objected to being classed as level 2 (minimal support needed) and bitched until the assisted living agreed to list her as level 5, same as my wheelchair/bed bound FIL. Both attitudes are a PITA in their own special ways, but amazingly my mother is somewhat less obnoxious. in other words, I still haven’t forgiven MIL for skipping DS’ graduation ceremony.

I guess MIL is extra or wants to be waited on. I'd want to be classified as low as possible level wise should I become an AL resident. Level 5 does not guarantee concierge care. They aren't in the same place and as roommates, are they? (Hopes not)

It is getting harder and harder. That presumes people do things, though. My mom does not do things. She has no hobbies and no friends. She'd never pay money to go on a cruise. She won't spend money period. Even to avoid freezing to death, quite literally. Part of that is fear driven, part of that is that for a long time my parents were lower middle class. Going out to dinner once a month at a greasy spoon was a big treat growing up. We didn't do vacations all that often. We alternated vacations with staycations. Most of our vacations were within a 6 hour drive of our house. By the time DS was 10, he'd been to more states that I had been to by like 25. There was no money for concerts, cruises, or professional games.

I think its because they have specialized sw they are all taught to use AND the people around her at work know how to use it too. Its systems within systems. I applied to work in Central Supply as well at the facility. Nursing requests stuff from Central Supply for the floor and there the Nursing Director is the boss of the employee in Central Supply because it is critical that the supply chain is on point. Hospitals are bigger systems so but it should be similar just bigger and more complex.

My dad was proud of himself for figuring out gifs on his new smart phone. I told him stop it he's old it's weird to get gifs from him. Him having a smart phone is FANTASTIC because we both loathe using the actual phone so we text constantly. It drives DH nuts because he doesn't understand why we don't just call each other.

Dad wanted to do all of his bill paying possible in person. That was fine before they moved here. Nobody had the time to take him daily to run one or to errands. I think he did it to get out of the house. Mom and dad kept a running grocery list. When he got to 3 or 4 items, he went to the grocery store.
Here, almost every week, we had to stop at the bank to get $100 in cash. With independent living, he no longer had many extra bills because things he used to pay for separately were included with his monthly rent. So we didn't have to run around to pay bills.
We had to go for grocerys weekly. He would get upset with me when I insisted during Thanksgiving week, we had to go on Tuesday. We did the Wednesday before once and I told him never again. We did the Friday after once and they had so few items in stock it was a wasted trip.
Then there were the word puzzles that he did faster than new onces came in.

In theory DH is tech capable but he is not as proficient as I am so I have most things both mailed and emailed so he can see them easily. Many places will no longer do that and I am concerned about what will happen if I'm not available to handle stuff received electronically. We used to share an email but had to get an electronic divorce when my volunteer work ramped up with a lot of confidential stuff he couldn't see.
I loathe anything I have to deal with in person rather than online, other than some types of shopping like produce and clothes. I do draw the line at any app where I have to store my CC info to use it for shopping because I don't do financial business on my phone ever.
