Speaking of being good neighbors, I picked up a bunch of firework fragments from my yard this morning. Looking at you, assholes to the right. My neighbors have been shooting off fireworks at all hours. Was not happy when they went off at 6:00 AM. Local Facebook post indicated these were shot off because of the late-night ones. I feel for all the pet owners and former veterans (with PSTD) who are affected by fireworks. BTW they are illegal. This happens every year at this time however they started a little earlier this year.

Boomers go up to age 78. My parents are all Boomers and have had their houses paid off for a long time. Same with all their siblings in the 70-78 age range. None have a mortgage on their primary house and most have paid off rentals as well.
Most of the people I know with paid off houses aren't Boomers. NJ is HCOL to VHCOL so some people have remortgaged houses or have home equity lines of credit to survive. Because of all the unexpected storms and even the NJ earthquake this year there seems to be a lot of big home improvement projects going on around me. Tree removal, driveways, etc. Complex repaired some earthquake damage, but not all. Nice legacy MPL. ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/thumbsup.png) None of the homes my parents owned were ever paid off to my knowledge. Of Mom's two surviving siblings the youngest might be 74/75 or even 78. EVERYONE that I know with a paid off house are boomers. My parents are boomers and have a paid off house in a LCOLA - their choice. Sounds like your parents are part of "the silent generation" and made bad choices. You say you have lived other places yet you have chosen to stay in a HCOLA. Why? You have no family there holding you back. Keep playing the "victim".

I mean I might, but it's unlikely especially if they live a long time, and then there are siblings so it will be split if there is anything.
Paid off houses in that age range is normal around here. Most people will not retire without having a paid off house. Even me with all my refinancing and being house poor will have it paid off by 68/69 if I don't prepay anything.

I'll build their bowls after I drop my sheet pan and start the timer. if I don't check in by 8ish tomorrow, send help? I'm fully expecting to just sleep downstairs all week now. oy.

And many of them most certainly did not buy their homes all that cheaply. In the early 90s prices here were already on par with what andi9899 is looking at right now. As for VHCOL is concerned look at the statistics below.#4 and #6 are right where I live... www.visualcapitalist.com/mapped-the-worlds-least-affordable-housing-markets-in-2024/

I don't know a single boomer with a paid-off house. I agree with Drama. It's the older folks, those in 70s and 80s are the ones who seemed to have it better. I know plenty of boomers with paid off houses. They bought them for nothing compared to today's prices and have lived in them forever. We paid ours off about 10 years ago, mostly because the interest rate on the mortgage was higher than the interest rate on our savings. Bought the house in '95 in what was considered one of the worst neighborhoods in Houston for $60K. It was original 1959 version. We've put maybe $100,000 into it since '95 and this year a realtor said she could list for $275K. Lots of folks still consider the neighborhood "bad" b/c it's majority minority. But so is Houston and we love that. Most of our coworkers and former neighbors did the whole "white flight" thing to the 'burbs and ended up with mega-mortgages 'cause they soiled their drawers when they saw a POC or heard a gunshot. Their problem, not mine

The conversation about paid off houses is interesting. I am guessing that housing costs in an area must make a big difference. I know many Boomers that live in paid off houses. And some also own rental properties. More than a few of my coworkers in their mid to late 50’s have paid off houses. Houses use to be pretty affordable around here.

Their problem, not mine “White flight” has been a thing where I live, for as long as I can remember. I was in my late teens and hanging out in places where “dope boys” tended to hang out, when I first realized that the dope boys, once they made enough money, followed the same moving patterns as the white flight folks. They didn’t want to sleep where they shat. I started saying that if the white flight folks kept moving farther and farther East, they were going to end up in Nashville. Decades later, guess what happened…… Nashville’s population exploded. Idk if it really was due in part to people running even farther from Memphis, but I like to say I predicted it, just for fun. Some of them stopped moving east and further into the suburbs though, and went back to certain places in the inner city, snapped up properties for cheap, and “gentrified” those areas.

Different way of life now compared to our early and mid married life. People went out to eat rarely, cars and houses were smaller and simpler. Houses had often only 1 bathroom later second but small bath in main BR. Kitchens were pretty utilitarian. Avocado green or harvest gold! Seemed luxurious compared to our parents little kitchens. Cars were mostly smaller sedans. Now when driving most of the cars look pretty new and big. Forty years ago lots more jalopies that had rust or primer waiting for cheap paint job . Earl SHEIN $100 We lived frugally not spending much other than tuition for private HS and college for 3 kids and Med school tuition for one. No loans but of course tuitions were much more realistic. Thinking loans made it easier for colleges to raise tuitions to ridiculous smounts I didn’t know anyone who traveled to Europe or the Caribbean till maybe I was 15 years out of college. Companies we worked for had little to offer for retirement programs after pensions disappeared. We really didn’t start saving seriously till after the tuition years were done. When kids were in school we spent vacations with family ‘down the shore’. Went out to eat maybe less than 10 times year. Yes our house is paid for but priorities were on kids education and paying off house. Then seriously saving. Now we can take nice vacations, eat out when we want but not without going through lots of frugal years. So people can look at Boomers and say they are doing well but don’t think about the earlier years

I'm sure it does, but I still think a high percentage of Boomers are in paid off houses...or are like Phil and could write a check to pay it off, but choose not to. My 75 year old aunt in a god knows how much it would sell for today house in Hawaii has had it paid off for a long time and she also has houses in TX and WA that are paid off. They were in the Air Force and bought in lots of places they were stationed and then chose to keep them as rentals instead of selling when they relocated. Then there is my uncle in Lincoln, NE that must have a dozen houses. LOL They were super cheap when he bought, not sure if they still are there or not, but he'd buy houses for like 20K and fix them up.

Time to haul old eggs to the woods. I really need to up my intake or start feeding them back to the hens because throwing away 4 dozen eggs is so wasteful.

so I've been tied to my kitchen all afternoon with pup food prep, and LD was up my ass about 30min ago. so I left everything as it was and went downstairs with him. the thunder booms over the next 15-20min? woof. I still need to shred the 2nd pass of the IP BSCB, and prep their dinner and mine. I closed the basement door when I came back upstairs just now. probably going to spend a little more time downstairs before setting up dinners. here's hoping these storms pass soon, I wasn't planning on sleeping downstairs til at least Thursday 👎 Jackson stays up my ass all day every day. I was telling him earlier today that I need to find a guy that is as obsessed with me as he is. Macy then decided she wanted to be petted and got up in my face. I informed her that I don't like girls. She didn't care.

I used to unload quite a few on my ex because his kids eat a ton, but he's kind of out of the way and has someone else giving them to him too. The last time I dropped off a couple dozen he said he already had 4 dozen in the fridge, but he took them.
Carrot doesn't like eggs much and I'll eat them, but sporadically. It was my oldest that would go through 3 or 4 a day, so when he moved out the eggs started piling up. I did scramble up 14 today and mixed them with sausage and cheese for breakfast wraps for the week.

Did some reading on my recovery from surgery. I will be sleeping in the recliner because my head is to be elevated. I will clean the cat box completely the day before surgery because I am not supposed to lift anything more than 15 pounds and a week of cat poop and pee weighs more than that. I am supposed to ice my nose for 3 days. I will ask my nephew if either he or his wife can pick up my prepared meals and bring them out. I absolutely will not want to be seen in public even at my coffee shop for a few days. The first two weeks will not be fun. Supposedly pain is a 4 out of 10. I have no idea if I will be offered pain meds. I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of this. Wish you lived closer so some of your ymam friends could help out. Are there any delivery services in your community that could just drop off your meals and/or groceries? I am too far from town in a small town of 2000, so no delivery services. My sister insists she needs to drive me but is not happy that I insist she wear a mask. She wanted to know how she will be protected from me on the way home ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/cantbe.gif) Her BIL just died last week after going to the doctor and testing positive for Covid but she insists he did not die of Covid. Just talked to DN3 and he will pick up my meals on Wednesday and bring them out. He has been prepared for how I will look. If my eyes swell, I would have had to skip that week. DN3 and I have had a deal since 2020 about getting food to each other if we were laid up. I got very upset with him when he was telling me about doing grocery pick up when the 3 of them were very sick with Covid. He dropped off food I paid for when I had the blood clots. By the next week, I will drive myself to get the sutures out and then get my own meals on Wednesday. My sister also thinks we need to communicate better.

Just put fresh sugar water in one of the hummingbird feeders. We have a nice steady rain going. It was wild and thundery earlier. I just LOVE the sound of rain. Nice swishy sound. The clouds are hanging low over the mountain across the road. I love when the birds use the porch for refuge when it is stormy. The forecast was finally right. Rain has been in the forecast for a couple weeks now, and only one day did it rain. Really messes up with deciding whether to water plants or not! The sun is trying to come out, so I stepped out to see if there is a rainbow, and sure enough! IMG_2177 by Fl Cheesehead, on Flickr

He can't tolerate them (stomach issues) but they did prescribe them. His pain was well controlled with OTC Tylenol which he can tolerate. The head elevation and icing really do help control swelling which, in turn, helps control the pain. I'm glad they gave you a really detailed briefing on things - some doctors do a poor job on that. I really like this doctor and I am glad a plastic surgeon is doing the surgery. I am also glad that I finally read the literature he gave me so I can get prepared for my future.

I think you might wanna take a shower tonight. Yeah. It's on the list. I would have showered yesterday if I had something to do. I did take a walk, but I didn't get all sweaty. Today, I took a walk and got sweaty. And I'm starting to feel a little gross. I hope you know I wasn’t judging. I just know that showering is a form of self care, and if you’ve gone several days without a shower, I was just encouraging you to practice some self care tonight. Take a long one, set the scene if you can, maybe with some candles and relaxing music playing if that’s your thing, and use your favorite soaps during and nice potions and lotions after, and try to enjoy tending to you. Just be giramomma, the person…. tending to gira….. Not gira the wife, Momma, daughter or employee. I apologize if I am overstepping and maybe projecting, since the occasional long shower, set up the way I described, feels good to me. I understand that YMMV.

I dropped off the clothing in the back seat at the free store. It is open till 8:30 I found. Picked up scrips and some items at Walmart, got a watermelon. ol I had put stuff from the garage by the road, there's a lot more. While I was loading fabric someone stopped in a nice car and loaded all that stuff up, so that's gone. I hope to put the rest out tomorrow and clear the garage getting ready for the next time.
I really think the kitties won't mind being in. There are 2 or 3 sets of double doors they can look out of and they will like that. Also lots of windows. Like I said keeping Tig in likely won't be a problem, but Smoke we will see. Where this subdivision is there are no close houses. It's kind of isolated on the edge of the city proper. Even kind of hard to find from the road, so that is a positive for us. I'm betting there will be a lot of new residents out there as I'm thinking a lot are late 70's and 80's since few have sold. It was set up in 2006 so being 55 then they are old even if they bought into it at 55.
The only way Smoke would be euthanized is if I can't keep him and am made to get rid of him. He just will not warm up to people, the vet and I are not sure he ever will. My son would try to take him, but hopefully none of that has to happen. He is my little love and it would really hurt me more than I can say, so we will do whatever to protect him and try to work it out.
I'm home, have jams on. The car is loaded with fabric, tomorrow I will load clothing too and get rid of that. I'm going to tape together a big box and see if I can put most of the other stuff in it and put it by the road.
Then we can start again.

That gentrification thing is a huge problem here b/c no one can afford to live in the newly "upscaled" areas except the rich folks, aka white, and there's no place for the original owners to go because "affordable housing" is just a code phrase for putting folks back in a segregated community without their families and history. Our dope boys did the same thing, moving down south to Ft. Bend county into MacMansions.

This boomer does not and will never have a paid off house.
My costs for housing as a single person are pretty much the same as for a married couple. If I had a second income, it would be paid off.
I am 15 years in to this mortgage so if I live 15 more years, it will be paid off. I will be 88 then so it's hard to say if I pay it off or not.
