That was the tipping point for us leaving FL. Long waits for healthcare, and NOBODY gave referrals. You had to find doctors & specialists on your own, unless the doctor had a personal friend. Wow. I live in Florida and have had the total opposite experience. I’ve had great medical experiences and care. My guess is it is very location dependent. Don't you volunteer in a very large hospital?

After breakfast I mopped most of the floors while DH vacuumed. Then I addressed one more Christmas card and we headed off to the farmers market. We got the pork tamales for Christmas Day, but the gumbo man wasn't there so we had to figure out something else for DH to serve tomorrow. I had a couple of remaining crab cakes in the freezer, and some appetizer size tuna cakes so we added some spinach and cheese stuffed cremini mushrooms from the store and said that would do. I also got 2 more bottles of the ice wine that he, very surprisingly, likes. He is not a wine fan but he says this one is "very pleasant". A tip of the maple-leaf hat to weltz as the wine is made in Canada. It's only $9.99 at Aldi, and the cheapest at the few large liquor stores that carry ice wine runs about $30 so we're happy. I think I'll be in the mood to work on the book tomorrow. zibazinski I may be rethinking my decision to remain on the board - our secretary-elect (term begins January 1) just said on social media she may send the unapproved minutes to the whole board instead of the executive committee for preliminary approval before presentation to the whole board because "they are corrupt". 2024 is going to be about 72 months long, if you know what I mean. Soupandstew I hope you don't let stupid come after you. There are ways to protect yourself and often someone with an agenda on a volunteer organization will out themselves at least once. You can always wait for it, instead of conceding ground to a busybody troublemaker. MO.

Made from grapes on the vine that have frozen. The bottles are about 1/3 the size of a wine bottle, and usually not inexpensive. It’s also very sweet. Fingerlakes region of NY make some excellent ones, as does an area of BC. I am currently drinking a Hungarian version. In German, I think it is Spatlese (umlauts missing). I'm a fan of Innskillen, which is currently $60 for a half bottle *wine bottle size* and I think the one I am working on is about half that or less. It is not an ice wine but the one right before it in German parlance. I think I decided to get it after Mich or someone decided us underfunded folks were not worth funding small alcohol purchases even though our lives are quite hard and on the margins. I personally am surprised there aren't more underfunded folks committing suicide or drinking themselves to death. USA indeed. okay, for real. WTF?

Crafting. Gardening. Baking. Laundry. Didn't get to the sewing yet.
Tried a new dinner roll recipe. The dough tastes good and rises nicely, but the cooking temperature in the recipe was too high. I plan to make these for Christmas dinner so I wanted a test run first. I've made notes to adjust the cooking and I think they'll turn out great. Batch of garlic knots about to go into the oven. Then I'll cook dinner.
Rain just started. Supposed to rain overnight. Which, we need it. I just hope it's cleared out by the time we head out for Sunday with Santa.

I always say "when someone tells you who they are, believe them" so this person is giving ample warning to all about her intentions, motivations, and modus operandi. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me. She has a very high opinion of herself which many do not share and will dig her own grave. Sort of that, give 'em enough rope and they will hang themselves thing

The big bosses wanted to make sure I was never, ever promoted again. He made sure that didn't happen. I was in a class he taught and he was told to flunk me. He later told me he doesn't flunk people unless they actually flunk and I didn't flunk. The best piece of the advice was to get out of Des Moines. I chose Denver and was so shocked to see women doing my job but also in management. In Des Moines, I was applying for a promotion the old white men didn't think women should Have. Best thing I did was leave and go to Denver. He transferred to Denver several years later and told me that attitude had not changed in Des Moines. Your dear friend is an amazing person - it took a lot of courage to be the person he was at that time. I'm very glad he was in your life at a critical juncture, and I'm sorry for the pain his passing will bring. Yet, his legacy lives on in you and your values. Thank you. Yes, Jerry does live on in me and his two daughters. After he and their mother divorced and both remarried and the arguing was over, they decided to hold all holiday and birthday celebrations together. He and his 2nd wife hosted. He taught a lot of co-workers than you can sacrifice a little of your comfort to give your children the gift of being with both parents. She and her husband moved away and she passed away. Neither daughter went to her funeral. When he asked why, they individually said that he was the one who hard always parented them and she hadn't made any efforts to keep in touch after she moved. Her husband moved back to Denver after she died and right back in to the fold of the family.

Just went out for a late breakfast this morning, and discussed moving. As much as I love where we currently live, the healthcare here sucks and as we grow more dependent upon it, we need better services. Right now, it’s not an issue to drive 100 miles to Seattle, but both of us realize that unless there is a drastic change locally, this will be our next step. Since healthcare has deteriorated here in the last 10 years, I’m not going to hold my breath. We don’t figure this for another 10 years, but something we need to seriously consider. Where we want to go means less house for more money. So be it. Condos and townhouses are not off the table. Since we have friends in the Bellevue area, this is where TD wants to go, and I’m good with that. We need less land, less responsibilities, less stuff…..just like his mom did. That was the tipping point for us leaving FL. Long waits for healthcare, and NOBODY gave referrals. You had to find doctors & specialists on your own, unless the doctor had a personal friend. There have been some incidents with our friends that have essentially slapped us in the face as to how inadequate the local healthcare is. 10+ years ago after my experience in the local hospital happened, I told TD never again. The hospital was a clusterf#$& from the time I hit my room after surgery. I have since had 2 friends die due to their being a clustef#$&. A third friend is being sent to Seattle for a relatively minor procedure. I really don’t get it why it’s so bad here. This is a lucrative enough place to live to try to recruit talent, the only thing I can think of is that the only available hospital is so bad is that it drives doctors away.

For real, I am a real person, and when someone says I don't think SNAP should cover alcohol it is personal to me. And yes for real Chiver. I am within the code of conduct as I DO NOT KNOW WHO SAID IT. AND stated that. Spacecoast Paul can call repeatedly for deaths of liberals and it gets a pass on the board cuz COC. This gets a pass too, because IT IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK. x 1000 I'm not asking WTF as pertains to the Code of Conduct. I'm asking it because you're completely fucking out past left field! you continue to use this NON-word "underfunded" as a description to this victimhood you perceive. and out of the other side of your mouth, you talk about how your life has no meaning if you have to drive a boring but reliable car to get your shit done. I just can't with you. go find another job that pays better, or find a second, in order to fund the life you want. alcohol isn't necessary to live. cars aren't necessary to live. food is, and that's what SNAP is for. I'm going to go back to ignoring you. I have enough of my own shit to worry about these days.

Spaetlese is one level below in terms of sweetness, more available and more reasonably priced. (When you can’t post an umlaut, add an e) There are alcoholics who drink themselves to death daily. Providing alcohol to alcoholics is NOT the purpose of SNAP.

I'm going to go back to ignoring you. I have enough of my own shit to worry about these days. FWIW, I don’t think SNAP should cover alcohol either. I am on the fence about cars being necessary, depending on where you live. Public transportation pretty much sucks in the area I live in, even within the city limits. Between that, and the fact that everything is so spread out, you pretty much need a car in this area. It is not a pedestrian friendly place to live, on top of the lack of efficient public transit. I have never in my whole life, lived anywhere within walking distance of a grocery store, for example. I don’t consider a couple of miles to be walking distance. Or maybe I’m just really lazy, which I actually am lol. Someone that works where I do, near downtown in the city, would be SOL if they work evenings or nights, and needed to rely on public transit to get to and from work. That’s not even a thing late at night or overnight. I have had a car since I was 16yo, so that’s not me complaining about difficulties I’ve personally dealt with, I’m just being honest and realistic about how spread out everything is here, and how public transportation is not even close to what it is in other big cities. I know people just have to do what they have to do to survive, but I am just pointing out that a person can live in a city, and still really need a car to get where they need to go on an everyday basis. I recognize that about where I live, even though I’ve always had a car myself. Of course, that doesn’t mean a fancy, fast, or luxurious car. Despite whatever one wishes for, a reliable car that gets them where they need to go, is all that’s necessary if that’s all that one can afford.

I'm cool with alcohol not being covered by SNAP. Other than that I consider whatever someone buys their own business. Things like cigarettes and alcohol are not needs. Food is a need and personally I'm not interested in getting into the nitty gritty of exactly which foods should and should not be covered. I consider that to be a huge waste of time and would probably cost more money to police than the program would save. As far as cars I would consider them a need here. Council Bluffs completely gutted it's bus system and the mayor argued "everyone has a car". At the same time they gave massive tax breaks to build services people need like grocery stores and hospitals further and further outside of city limits. Same with Omaha. It at least has a bus system but it is terrible. I can still walk pretty easily to Broadway and could likely make it back with groceries but someone who is elderly would likely end up being run over by traffic. Let alone getting her stuff home in 110 degree heat in the summer which is only getting worse thanks to climate change. Both cities think putting in a street car for tourists is a wonderful idea though. Both here and in Omaha it would only run in the downtown pretty areas. That does not solve the issue of people being able to get to work from the less desirable parts of the cities. I for one would like to see a mutual bus system so people can get work in Omaha and vice versa. That being said you don't need a luxury car to get by. I drive a 2012 Impala which I intend on running into the ground. It is a solid commuter car that gets me where I need to go especially in the winter. I watched a dude in a snazzy sports vehicle once trying in vain to get up a steep hill on an icy street. Not a practical car for Midwestern winters. We used to have an awesome bus system when I was a kid. I remember riding it all the time with my grandma who didn't drive. When we had an actual downtown here she could do a lot just by walking. As time went by she became dependent on my parents and me to drive her everywhere. this is actually a real studied problem because as more and more people age but services move farther out and there is no public transit their kids and grandkids feel pressure to stay in town to help. That limits their growth and earning potential especially if they live in a lot of the small towns around here. It's yet another thing that will eventually bite the USA in the ass.

I have really been enjoying time spent with Kiddo.
He wanted to know what I’m doing on my IPad, which is playing a lot of Sudoku. So I showed him how to play, and he picked it right up, and I’ve been playing easy games to help him learn, and he’s been “helping” me when I play more difficult games. He really is very smart. I fuss at him about messing up my stats on the app when he “guesses” and it’s wrong. He giggles when I fuss about messing up my stats. He said the game works your brain. I like it because it forces you to think logically to complete the puzzle correctly, but I didn’t know how to put that in kiddie words to tell him.
He apologized for not calling me in my birthday because he doesn’t have my phone number, which I gave him this evening. He asked what his Dad did for me for my birthday, and wanted to know how old I am. I dodged the question about how old I am, then finally told him, and he was shocked lol. He didn’t realize I was older than his Dad. Then he told me what year I must’ve been born in, and I said yep, you are right.
He has pretty much been glued to my side since yesterday, when I’ve been home. I don’t mind it, I am actually pleased that he seems to enjoy my company. Even though I’ve shared a lot of stuff here, about his bad behavior, he is NOT a “bad” kid. He did try me for a while, but once we got an understanding of what I expected of him and what I would and would not tolerate, we have gotten along very well. He just does normal kid stuff, which is fine with me, because he IS a child, but nothing on the level of the things his Mom constantly complains about.

My mom lives in a different state than me. We are both watching the same show on our respective tvs. She keeps texting me to ask “who’s this person in that commercial?”
first, I don’t pay attention to the commercials. Second, my commercials are usually for local-ish things. Third, when I asked what commercial, she said it was for the grocery store in her city that we don’t have in our state 🤣

I got Gwen's last gift from us so I am done there. Going to get one more for from my dad. So far from "him" I got her a four pieces set of gold hoop earrings from TJ Maxx. I need to see if JCP has the shampoo set she wants. Got Abby done for both. I found one of those Mixies Magical Crystal Ball at a good price at TJ Maxx. I refused to buy one for the price they were at the height of popularity. Even now on Amazon they are close to $60. She's wanted one for awhile so grandpa will be pretty popular. Then "grandpa" got her coloring books as she requested and found a 60 gel pen set at Five Below to go with them. She already has all my mom's colors and colored pencils. Dad is done, brother is done. Archie is done he's getting his T shirt bear that I had made for him. DH is done if the dang shirt ever shows up. Will do some light shopping next weekend for some stocking stuffers and the dogs. Yes my dogs and my dad's dogs get gifts. They are family.

Houston has worked very hard to expand their transit services but it still is a very tough thing for many needing transportation to work, shopping, or health services. I could take a city bus but first I have to get to a bus stop which would be a walk of two long blocks to wait at an unsheltered bus stop, rain, shine, and 100 degree temps. And it might take a few transfers to get where I'm going. Yet many people I know, including my neighbors. do this daily. The bus has a place on the front for riders to secure their bicycles.
Practically speaking, a vehicle is a necessity here. But relatively few have the option of a luxury class vehicle; most rely on practical transportation like Toyota Camry, Honda Accord etc. With a Volkswagen Beetle and a Subaru Impreza, 4 and 5 years old respectively, we are very, very fortunate.

Another online game you might want to teach him is Wordle. It really does help with language and spelling skills. It is also fantastic with logic and vocabulary.

When you work in a medical center and have to use the hospital that you work as a part of. I didn’t realize until I spent 11 days there and checked out against medical advice.

There's a huge difference between treating one's self, once in a very, very blue moon because they have an extra $50 and getting alcohol covered weekly/monthly under snap.
When I take things personally, here, that shouldn't be. That's my cue to step away. It's not my cue to drink (or engage in whatever behavior) to try to thumb my nose at folks. In the end, it just negatively affects you.
I can't imagine the choices that you are making Opti. I am sometimes amazed (not in a good way) at your choices.

He just does normal kid stuff, which is fine with me, because he IS a child, but nothing on the level of the things his Mom constantly complains about. Another online game you might want to teach him is Wordle. It really does help with language and spelling skills. It is also fantastic with logic and vocabulary. I play 3,4,5,6,7 wordle every day! It has improved my spelling skills and increased my vocabulary. But not sure the vocabulary can be repeated here if you get my drift. Then I play worldle and that really increases my vocabulary. But bottom line you made a valid suggestion by playing wordle!

I do. I’d like to live in a smaller town but good medical care is located in cities. Oddly enough, until I changed doctors recently, I didn’t use the hospital I volunteer at. You know what is scary. When you work in a medical center and have to use the hospital that you work as a part of. I didn’t realize until I spent 11 days there and checked out against medical advice. Try switching from the university to working in the hospital. JFC it is wonder anyone comes out alive. Could have totally lived without that peek behind the curtain and it's made me decide I will just will myself to never get sick. My mom used to type the documents for CHI. You DO NOT want to go there if you are a woman of child bearing age. Methodist is a mixed bag. I haven't heard terrible things about Omaha but stay away from Jenny Ed in Council Bluffs. They killed my grandma. Jenny Ed in combination with Mercy killed my MIL.

Kiddo is very lucky to have you pink. Thank you for saying that. I feel like I’m lucky to be a part of his life.

That's what we are concerned about is access to medical care. I went to the urgent clinic today. I didn't have enough antibiotics, it was clearing me up but I've been coughing and the side of my chest hurt. Plus I have a splitting headache. I had been wheezing but they did a chest x ray and said it was clear. She decided sinus and sinus drainage so gave me another antibiotic and cough syrup, plus a decongestant. They said don't drive after taking the one. I didn't sleep good for 2 nights. And I may not be wheezing now but I sure was, but that's an improvement.
Bought lobster claws, shrimp, and clam chowder at Costco. The crab legs are much better than the lobster claws so won't buy those again. Also bought some some Korean stuff we will try. Likely not as good as what DIL makes but easy for me.
I had little guy go home this afternoon. I didn't want to have to take him to the doctor with me today and didn't want him to catch anything, he wanted me to come back and get him but I said I would tomorrow. His dad told him let grandma rest. I don't think us waiting outside in the cold for DIL to park and than retrieve the car did us any good. DD hasn't acted like she feels all that good today either after her episodes. She like to never got into the theater without fainting, I had to help her. And she made it out but standing and waiting she got very weak. I really think its her heart. I need to talk to her heart doc when we get back, she hasn't had one of these episodes for a year at least, poor thing. I don't think DIL understands, she asked me to watch little guy and take him to the bathroom while she went to get the car. I told her I couldn't, had to help DD, she acted miffed. Good grief lady stop and look at what a time I had getting her in and out. That theater was not disability friendly, yes it had elevators but we were down a floor. Son apparently should have said that and got different tickets, but I doubt he even thought about it
We may have to end up buying her a wheelchair after all, a light weight one of some kind. Hubs has suggested it. I didn't really want to do it yet. Doing that seems so darn final.
So Walk what is access around Olympia like, I know son has had long waits to get in places? Population must be growing to fast.

as I travelled more, I got there. obv with the exception that I'm not trying any shellfish dishes as those would actually kill me. but I tried bites of beef dishes (I don't really eat beef) and other things that aren't in my normal wheelhouse. but my first few trips to Ireland when I was all of 22? when the local coworkers wanted to take us out for local delicacies like pigs' feet, I firmly stuck to the "I'm a vegetarian" the whole time. We were in Indonesia, I think and a guide took us through a fresh food market. I there were fruits I had never even seen before and I was the only one who would try. One fruit (and dammit, I could never remember the name) tasted like a strawberry, and it wasn’t until I oooh’ed and aaah’ed over it did anyone else bother to taste. I really was embarrassed about the tour group that here they were in a strange country with all sorts of new things and no one was willing to try. Then, coming back from a lunch out we passed by another market and I had our guide negotiate for a bunch of fruit. This was in Vietnam, and the seller spoke no English. I brought the fruit back to our cabin and bypassed meals as I munched on it all day. I can eat my weight in jackfruit. I had no idea it was so good. Local is a poor imitation. The only thing I didn’t get to try was durien. I smelled it (OMG does it stink, it smells like vomit plus something) but no one was sampling it, or I would have. Maybe next time I’ll get a chance. I found the food markets amazing. So much to your post with the exception of durian. A person has to have standards and, with that smell, durian is that one step too far. I did uy dried durian pieces in Sahpa this summer though and DS1s partner loves them. She is S'porean though and has overcome her smell aversion to fresh durian. I'm not even trying this non smelly version

CG a lot of places like that have wheelchairs you can borrow. I have seen people ask for a transport wheelchair to borrow on next door. Transport wheelchair is meant to be smaller/lighter easy to get in and out of car. Not meant for someone to sit in for a long time. I don’t think they are particularly expensive.
I have not bought any christmas presents. Well I bought 3 so far and have misplaced one. Now that I think about it, I did buy DD $330 worth of clothing for training on her new job, but I gave it all to her already so she can try on/exchange.
Thinking about Kiziks or Sketchers slip on shoes for my FIL if I can find them. DH has to confirm size.
I always take mom to church Saturday. Saturday at 4 is considered a “Sunday” Mass. Christmas Eve mass is 4 or 6:30 and Christmas Day is at 10 am. My Family Christmas Celebration starts at 3 at my Brothers so we are not going to church on Christmas eve. So, I ended up telling mom I will take her to Church Sat and Monday. I also told her I will get her groceries maybe Friday and I am taking her to her Prayer hour Wednesday from 1-2 so my lunch will prolly be 2 hours. Then on Tuesday I made an appt to whiten my teeth. We don’t have house clean or tree up.
I was supposed to sign up to work a half day the Friday Before Christmas or Friday Before New Years. I did not sign up for either, but by default I am working the Friday before New Years unless DH comes up with tickets to a bowl game. So, I guess I can catch up Friday.
Overate today. I gained about 2 pounds since Wednesday. At this rate my clothes won’t fit by Christmas Day.
Eta. I started talking about Christmas gifts because people always seem to buy my bottles of red wine for christmas. I do not drink red wine and I never did. I drink white wine. About 10 years ago, I consider myself to have had a drinking problem. I quit cold turkey when I decided I was a bad example for my kids. I now only drink socially. Only drink at home if we have company. I try to only drink 2 drinks per occasion, but if DH pours 1 drink=2.
Our Bar is so well stocked it could be a commercial establishment. DH also doesn’t drink much due to his diabetes. A lot of the liquor in the bar was gifted too. I told DD we are going to have to tell people if you open a bottle and it is not good, it and open a new one (this said d.u.m.p it and open a new one, in edit mode, but as soon as I exit and see what it says the word d.u.m.p. is not there? Weird)(due to it being old).
I sometimes think I should regift the red wine, or the beer that invariably gets left here after a party, but I hate the idea of feeding an alcoholic’s bad habits. I would rather they struggle to afford the alcohol and face the consequences of their decisions.

I didn't because it was too much and I would have had to stay in Des Moines. Another woman did and won with back pay, etc. She was already blackballed so she quit the day after she got her money. I was able to stay with my agency and have a good career in a place where they were much more open minded. And this* is exactly why I cringe every time I hear a young woman say she is not a feminist because they (the feminists) are just "man haters". After all our generation went through they just assume that it was always like it is today and it will just really get better to where it needs to be just because they have showed up. I hope that the overthrow of Roe v. Wade has shown them how precarious these gains are and they will wake up in time. *for the record TheOtherMe and I are of the same vintage - a very good year indeed

I think I made the best mashed potatoes ever tonight. I had about 8 pounds of potatoes to get rid of so decided to just boil them all up. Lots of butter and half and half in them, so they should freeze well...if I don't eat them all.
