Yes, aspic. Natural stock from meat collagen. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I've never seen those salads. We ate exclusively Russian food. If someone was to serve my mother those sweet salads, I think she'd die laughing. When I go to foreign countries, I don’t laugh and do try to sample as much local food as possible, regardless of how repulsive I might think it. There have been times I have been pleasantly surprised. My chicken stock looks like jello when I thaw it. Collagen gives it body, and the Indonesian chef on the cruise ship made his stock with pigs feet (and it smelled wonderful). He told me pig and chicken feet will give you the most collagen out of an animal, that you want the collagen in your stock. I haven’t been able to find either locally, but chicken wings are a good Plan C, and can be found.

I'm going to attempt pet photos with Santa with my dog this afternoon. She's really scared of big dogs since a boxer attacked her one day while we were walking. If there are a lot of big dogs around, we'll just go walk around Tractor Supply or something. We did this exactly once with Harpo and the Grinch. It did not go well. Harpo was a little dog with a Napoleon complex. 25 lb Harpo went after the 95 lb Rottie Scarlett who lived down the street. Scarlett spent the rest of her life looking for a rematch.

Mom made what my sister and I called orange gunk. It was orange jello with something in it that we obviously didn't like. She also made something with green jello. I think with pears. I don't think I have ever made jello since I left home. My grandmom made an awesome jello dish for holidays that my brother has thankfully mastered. It's raspberry jello, mashed strawberries, crushed pineapple, and I forget what else (a little OJ?), set in a 9x13 pan and when it is half set add some dollops of sour cream. It's so good. Orange and lime jello reminds me of being sick as a kid. If my grandmom had to babysit us when sick she'd make a Lipton chicken noodle packet for lunch and give us either orange or green jello. Those are comfort flavors for me. My grandmother made similar jello dishes. She also did raspberry jello with home grown raspberries and strawberry jello with home grown strawberries. The berries were usually frozen in a sugar syrup. 😋

I should go you know where today. My niece wants a cologne but doesn't have the money. It's $130 which is more than the $50 limit I set for the kids. This is outside of the free makeup I get with my points. However, I have a $20 coupon and $56 in points, which will bring it down to $54. These kids are spoiled rotten. I bought cologne for DH on black Friday. I have absolutely no idea what I did with it.

I have found chicken feet at Walmart. About the only thing I will enter their doors for, and I have to really be desperate for bones for my bone broth. Grocery store wasn't too awfully crowded and was in and out about half an hour. I chose the wrong checkout - the woman in front of me had 15 gift cards. I got the salmon and will start the marinade after I put everything else away.

Please pray for me today, especially while working my 5. Need to download the NJ transit app. Found out yesterday from a fellow bus rider why our bus was late and where it was stuck. Came earlier than I prayed for, so I was happy about that. Turns out my sleep helper med can't be refilled until Sunday or Monday. Next workday is Monday. Still have FMLA stuff to deal with. I realize part of the answer is obvious. My current PCP who was my doctor also in my mid to late twenties will sign the paperwork. Learning how their patient portal works has been mind bending as it works on office location including floor and suite. My new PCP (spring) will be moving to a new location anyway. It is on the bus line, and I know exactly where it is. Wonder if some of my lack of sleep is my hydration is finally pushing old stuff out of my body. That last scrip precautions were super scary. I felt a little better when PCP Now told me why all the minerals were listed. Its a covalent thing, in this case they all have I think 2 free electrons? Science, but I remember that and took precautions. Better stop typing and focus to get ready. .75 one way and perhaps I should buy a roll of dimes today too. for my trips to Pharmacy 1. Going to check weather and see what I am dealing with morning into afternoon. Good luck, throughout your day. I hope it goes well. TY! It went well enough. Coworker's last day is before the end of the week. But I suspected that might happen, so just have to deal with it.

The Christmas blues are out in full force this morning. I may only feed the cats and myself between now and the first of the year. When does your team play next?

I have decided queue theory means whatever line I choose will be the wrong one ... so I try to just wait it out unless its bad. Glad you survived the processing of 15 GCs that were not yours.

I bought part of the missy's gifts in July when Amazon had prime days. I was happy I was able to locate them all.

Caught the tail end of "Almost Christmas" on E! And up next is "This Christmas" - one of my all time faves. Soundbar is turned up while I cook up some sausage and make some caramel puff corn for DH.

Pop is on a John Grisham tear since yesterday. I fell asleep watching A Time to Kill, waking up much later to The Pelican Brief with enough time for something else to have played through. I put it on with a sleep timer when I moved up to bed. when I realized we were inside for the day, I went looking for background noise and found The Pelican Brief almost exactly where I fell asleep last night, and it's almost over. The Client is up next. I've seen that one before, it's Susan Sarandon and a kid whose name I should remember....he was in a bunch of stuff, like Stephen King's Apt Pupil - a movie that horrified me so badly that I turned it off. his name will come to me.....he's a member of the 27 Club. oh wait, he was only 25. but still. yikes. ETA: Brad Renfro, the opening credits just rolled. I knew I'd know it when I saw it.

fanfuckingtastic. I looked out the back window to call LD in from howling at whatever, and noticed he was holding up a back paw - the same leg that was surgically repaired this summer. he's alternating between limping and not, so I'm. not sure. if it's the knee or something else. our vet is closed today, so he's on rest til I can call on Monday. ugh. not what I needed today.... I'm so sorry. I know your heart sank when you saw that. I hope he'll be OK.

My dear friend and former boss, who lives in Denver, will be entering hospice care after Christmas. He is septic where he had his gallbladder removed and he has had an infection in his foot that doctors have not been able to heal in several years. This week that doctor said that foot needs to be amputated. My friend said no. He will be kept on painkillers and antibiotics and hopefully be able to enjoy Christmas. When I read his daughter's message, I started crying. That's what I am going to do today. He fought for me at work because it was the right thing to do when he was told to get rid of me because I was a feminist. He coached me to fight for myself without putting upper management off. He gave me advice on money for so long. He listened to me about my parents' deaths and now I am trying to help his daughter. He will be missed. He no longer enjoys talking on the phone, so I probably won't get to say good bye. Wait what? They wanted to fire you because you're a feminist? WTF? Is that even legal?

The Christmas blues are out in full force this morning. I may only feed the cats and myself between now and the first of the year. I hear you on this. I am trying to find small things to get me though the end of the year. With DH not doing well, it's all I can do to maintain basic sanity most days.
Coming up, I have two races, a stop at a new ethnic supermarket, breakfast with friends - small stuff helps sometimes. Don't worry about anyone or anything big. Don't create new priorities or look at all the "perfect" holiday scenarios on TV and online. No one lives like that in real life. It's draining to think everyone else is doing it better than you. They aren't.

One fruit (and dammit, I could never remember the name) tasted like a strawberry, and it wasn’t until I oooh’ed and aaah’ed over it did anyone else bother to taste. I really was embarrassed about the tour group that here they were in a strange country with all sorts of new things and no one was willing to try. Then, coming back from a lunch out we passed by another market and I had our guide negotiate for a bunch of fruit. This was in Vietnam, and the seller spoke no English. I brought the fruit back to our cabin and bypassed meals as I munched on it all day. I can eat my weight in jackfruit. I had no idea it was so good. Local is a poor imitation. The only thing I didn’t get to try was durien. I smelled it (OMG does it stink, it smells like vomit plus something) but no one was sampling it, or I would have. Maybe next time I’ll get a chance. I found the food markets amazing.

Debating whether to quit as board president and quit volunteering as well. I’ve had it up to my eyeballs with the politics. Quit. Life is too short. I used to sit on an advisory group for the kids school. I had the perfect volunteer job. Then everyone, after participating once, decided they knew how to to it better. Opinions and all that. I should have left much earlier than I did. But, you know we are supposed to volunteer. Which. Sure, whatever. They just want their money. We get letters for money. We don't get letters when we don't fulfill our volunteering responsibility. The peanut and I found a couple places that we truly love volunteering at. We'll up our game and bring DD1 along for this upcoming summer because DD1 will need hours for National honors society. I’m seriously considering it but I, too, want to stop the nonsense. It’s always someone who is overstepping their bounds and emailing the entire board without permission and causing a ruckus. Our meeting on Tuesday was supposed to be a holiday celebration and now we have to deal with prima Donna’s bs.

Sooo? This applies to foreign countries as well as here in the US. Its just another learning experience like travel.

Durian is not my thing. I'm open to trying Jack fruit again my Indian coworkers said I needed to try it slow cooked in a curry.
I had THE BEST bananas of my life in Borneo. A little local breed. My roommate and I found when we came across a fruit stand.
So incredibly sweet. I could have eaten my body weight in them.
I hate supermarket bananas. just cannot compare.

(Not the level of food allergies requiring epi pens ... but YS did have that with peanuts so ...) I love trying new things but especially when traveling I need to be careful. If I am in a country with good potable water and good not too hard to access medical, I feel one comfort level. If I checked out some places, I really want to go such as Bali, Thailand, I feel like my comfort level would be lower.

Carrot has a Christmas party at school this afternoon, so I came into work rather than driving all the way back home. After that we have a piano recital and then most of the school holiday stuff is over save for a field trip on Thursday that I don't have to be involved in save for packing a lunch that day. Then we move on to all the family things. I hate all the traveling. We have three Christmas's to hit ranging from 30 to 120 miles away. We never used to make the long trip, they came to us some other weekend, but ever since stepmom got lung cancer she wants all the kids and grandkids together at her house on Christmas...morning no less so we have to get up early, do chores, open gifts and hit the road by 8am. I got it the first year when we all thought it might be her last Christmas, but come on...you're all better now!

I love jack fruit raw but I've also heard it's amazing in a curry. Our local Hispanic grocer has little bananas like that, about 5 inches long and they are flavor bombs - much richer taste than regular bananas. I think ours come from Honduras

When we went Amersterdam the tour guide took us to a waterfront food stall that had tiny fresh caught herring served raw. No one else in the group would even try them but DH and I faceplanted in the little paper bowls they served them in - they were so good

y'all, it's barely been 6h of house arrest again. both dogs hate me bc we haven't gone anywhere today, LD isn't putting that paw down at all now. and I'm not sure I can do this again already so soon. may it rain sheets tomorrow, so nobody wants to be outside. I hate to wish away everyone's weekends, but it needs to be Monday already so I can see some xrays to know what I'm dealing with.
