I had stocked up on canola oil, did not know it went rancid so I won't do that again. Maybe not rancid but picked up a plastic taste off the bottles and it was not that old.
The canned goods I threw away were home canned.
I keep my smaller freezer gone through and updated, it's in good shape. Just put peaches in it. The big freezer needs gone through though. Likely some breads or a few things need pitched. I went through it last year but did not defrost. I chipped off some fairly big pieces of ice a month or so ago, but it sure wouldn't hurt to defrost it and see how much corn I need.
The house freezer drawer I'm chipping away cooking the meats in it, but wouldn't hurt to sort through it either.
Little guy has been a sweetie so far. He goes in and spends some time with DD, I think that is so sweet. I worry the day he realizes she is so different and doesn't want to. He makes sure he gets her for meals. He seems to have empathy for others, I hope he stays that way.
He told his dad he wants to add Subway to food he eats.
It's so funny we are a smaller rural county, maybe 20000 people total. They are talking about hiring a full time food inspector as we have 95 eating establishments plus food trailers that travel around and sell food. I guess if nothing else people here eat, likely why we are all so fat, LOL!

MPL - you're taking some heat for throwing the frozen foods away, but I want to say kudos for making progress. I know you've mentioned that sometimes you get stuck wondering where to start on some of your 'home piles'. You take care of two kids, work hard, have a significant number of physical chores, etc. It's no wonder you get behind sometimes. I think you're doing the right thing by making a dent. Doesn't matter if folks think you didn't choose 100% the best way. Whatever. Sometimes you have to use less than ideal measures to solve a problem. Thank you. I was feeling guilty about it, but I knew if i didn't toss it it would just end up in my freezer another year. The new side is going to be ready next Monday and this is the last time the garbage is coming before then so the freezer would have just been more cluttered than it already was. God, I hope the garbage man comes today. I don't know what I'll do if for some reason he doesn't show! I'm planning on being more deliberate with using things this time. I packed everything remaining from the chest freezer (except for frozen dried peppers) into the freezer in the kitchen and we're going to eat out of there first. There's a couple steaks and a roast left and lots of venison which DS needs to either eat or return to his dad.
I think you've said your weekly trash/waste is super low too and that you never throw out food scraps because they go to the chickens. I'll bet your annual waste is lower than a lot/maybe even most families.

Everyone on here would be horrified at how poorly I plan and wind up throwing things out I did a terrible job at taking the day off yesterday. Made chocolate cake, pie crust and spaghetti sauce in the morning, delivered to friend whose not quite 5yo brought covid home from school a week or two ago, drove it down and had an n95 masked chat from 20 ft apart, then went in and spent five very busy hours at work trying to get the project set up to achieve a good stopping point before I leave. Getting a bit nervous that I still don’t have a written offer. I suppose the worst would be I delay leaving a couple of weeks but I‘m pretty invested in leaving on time. Doing a better job today. Remade cake and sauce for our family, put together a sponge starter to try to make Italian bread tomorrow, kicking back now with the great british baking show and vague plans to Swiffer and maybe assemble the kids bookshelf I ordered for DS about two months ago. SIL is making a last minute pilgrimage this weekend to see in laws and will stay overnight with us so I probably ought to do some cleaning...later

Plate scrapings either go to the chickens or literally just out the back sliding door of our house and something comes along and eats them pretty quickly. I just didn't know what to do with all those pounds of soup bones and spare ribs. I probably should have opened all the packages and put them in a trailer behind my lawn mower and hauled them off to the woods for the coyotes and raccoons...and then avoided the area for at least a week in case they didn't clear it up the first day.

I have another question. My 85 year old former boss put his house on the market. I looked at the photos on Zillow. He told me yesterday that he has only had 4 showings in a week and no offers. How do I tell him he needs to get the "old people" furniture out of there and either stage it or leave it empty. I don't know which they do where he is. I would think a house going for that would be staged. Younger people are not impressed by 3 bedrooms with beautiful handmade quilts on the beds and matching wall quilts. I don't know how to tell him it's time to get that furniture out of there. I think some buyers equate "old people" furniture with an outdated or poorly maintained home, or they have a hard time visualizing themselves in a house with dated decor. Right or wrong, it's there. I'm putting my place on the market soon. The realtor has been here, we've talked about price, and she's given me a list of things to do (most of which I would have done anyway). I walk through the place with a critical eye to weed out "old people" furniture and decor as well as too much furniture in a room. My bedroom has my parents' bedroom set from the 1950s, but it's a classic mahogany style that doesn't scream "old people." And I have a modern but neutral coverlet and pillow shams. There is a condo around the corner from me, that the realtor listed and marketed the heck out of. It went under contract pretty quickly for more than asking price but then it fell apart because the sellers wanted to extend the lease-back provision from one month to two months. And then the place sat for about 2 weeks and sold for a lower price. I saw the pics online. It's partially updated (new counters over old cabinets, old vanities painted instead of replaced) with "old man" furniture and decor; you know the style, like big, brown, overstuffed pub-style couches, chairs, and recliners. The spare bedroom was set up as a cluttered office with trophies and framed diplomas galore and lots of professional memorabilia, and dated oak bookcases. Rooms could have been repainted instead of the baby blue, light pink, and lavender they had upstairs. The sellers were not interested in removing or redoing anything. I really dislike having a house on the market and the listing is not even active yet. All this tidying and sprucing up and packing is tedious. And as always, I think, "why didn't I do all this earlier so I could enjoy it?"

And as always, I think, "why didn't I do all this earlier so I could enjoy it?" Yeah, DH and I went through that. My Ex had a cousin who would "trade up" every 3 years or so. They had 2 kids. I don't know how they could stand the whole selling and buying process that frequently but they probably ended up doing well since it was Bergen County, NJ. I do remember one house DH and I looked at that screamed "old people"- the master BR had a flowered bedspread with matching frilly shades on the bedside lamps and a can lying on one of the beds. I could see how that would turn others off. There was another with closets crammed with what must have been ever school appear that every kid ever completed. The sale was due to a messy divorce (owner was there and told us half her life story). The house was OK but our realtor (who was intelligent enough to tell us to look for "good bones" and not the superficial) said, "these people are not serious about selling".

@pinkcshmere , if you are concerned about the condition of your house and what your mother has allowed it to become, I would recommend going to see it for yourself. There must be building codes where the house is located. Insect and vermin infestation is likely against a city or county ordinance and requires that the owners or occupants fix the problem. You don't want it to become so bad that the city would step in. The trouble with fixing it is that if your mother stays there, it would likely become infested again. I understand it's a concern that IF your mother had to leave the house, she would just not lift a finger to move until her stuff was placed on the curb and she would impose on people to take her in (probably on you, first) with the threat of becoming homeless. Is it possible to inquire about senior housing while also contacting one of those companies that buys distressed houses for cash? You could sell to them with a firm warning to your mother that there's nothing you can do for her if/when you sell. She will either have to pay rent to the new owners or get out. And that's assuming they let her stay. Once they see the infestation, they may require her to move before they do anything to the house. Senior housing is a good backup. It's a tough situation, for sure. If I were in your place, I guess I'd wonder if it was worth it just to let her live there for the duration and then fix the house after she's gone, if it's salvageable. And come to terms with the prospect that it may not be salvageable, and the house may need to be razed. Oh, just happened to think, is there a mortgage on the property? If so, just letting the house go to ruins is not an option. I’ve always taken care of my house. I’m going to have the exterminator go back over there either Monday or Tuesday. I’m going over there Friday to make sure it’s ready for the exterminator. I told my Mom if I have to clean Friday, I’m just going to throw shit away. It takes me losing my temper and screaming and cussing to get her attention to realize she’s gone too far and should probably stop aggravating me. Which is a shame, because I don’t want to yell and cuss at my Mom. I’ve only ever done it once, but we haven’t had that same issue again, she makes sure of that. And if my house is still a mess Friday, I’ll probably lose my temper again, since I’m already simmering on about a 8 about my house having mice and roaches and being filthy. The house still has a mortgage, but that’s not the point. It’s almost paid off and worth over $100k. That’s a lot of money to me. Too much for me to just let it go. I do think about just selling it sometimes, but I don’t want to. And if that becomes my only way out of this mess, I’ll probably never speak to her again. I already don’t really want to talk to her now. Whatever happens, she can NOT live with me again. I was absolutely miserable before I moved here with Mister. I’m talking stomach in knots on my way home from work every day miserable. I’m not going through that again. Oh, and I did call a few senior housing places. Long story short, they all have long waiting lists. I feel for you. If it were me, I would probably find the whole thing a bit traumatic. Not knowing how real estate values are in your area, or the mortgage situation, but having watched probably too many episodes of Hoarders, I couldn't figure out whether the condition of the property was one that had deteriorated to a point where the value plummeted and could become a serious financial issue. I really applaud you for cultivating a life process so different from that of your mother. It's frustrating and upsetting to have to worry about someone whose mind set is so different. So sorry you have to go face to face with her under such unpleasant circumstances. Your mother's lack of appreciation for having a nice place to live and a landlord that allows her to skirt paying the rent is so disheartening. But I'm preaching to the choir here.

I want to bake All The Things now. Annoyed that I accidentally saw this seasons winner when googling for recipes, and still haven’t found the one for technical challenge pizza dough @southernsusana, we haven’t heard from Penny in some time. Am concerned since she is quite an opinionated person. Is she well?

Just got back from taking the problem children to the vet. All is well, but they were overdu3 for shots and they have to be up to date when we board them out. The vet said that Sheldon and Harriet are her favorite patients, but when I said that she said that to everyone, she was quick back with no, I really don’t.
Sheldon has put on 1.5 lbs of Covid weight, but not quite sure how as he gets fed the exact same food, exact same amount (by measuring cup) daily. Vet suggested moving him onto senior food, but he’s only 8. I hate screwing around with his food as he’s a cat and hasn’t been an asshole about it. Harriet is back to her pre-fluffy weight from the 8 lbs she gained while being dog sat, which is good.
Lastly, on our way there, someone had just hit a fawn. Mama deer was nudging the body with her nose trying to get the fawn to move out of the road. It was heartbreaking to watch. Cars were backed up, as no one wanted to risk hitting mama. By the time we came back through, the fawn’s body had been removed.

A young woman starting a landscaping business came today. My 2 pollinator gardens were overgrown with weeds . Injured my knee and couldn’t weed She and her 13yo cousin weeded and mulched and now the 2 gardens are lovely! New window bird feeder arrived to replace the one raccoon destroyed. Removed patio chair that was under window so hoping raccoon can’t get this one. Tufted titmouse visited already I wrote final draft of questions the NJ attorney general sent about the contract to lease a building at the NJ school for deaf. Our charity wants to renovate a vacant dorm into senior apartments. We’ve been trying to get a property for more than 10 years. Praying this goes through. Then to start on the $5 million renovation I’m finally enjoying retirement!

Regarding freezer clean out, I know many people who cook meat for their dogs. I worked with a guy who cooked beef heart and liver for his little dogs each and every week.
I have a friend who has rescued two wolf crossed dogs. I save beef bones for them to chew on.
My point is that old meat may not be suitable for humans, but canines would love it.

The first time I went to Munich (maybe 15 years ago) the menus were full of beef by-products- calves' lungs, liver, brain, heart, etc. My vegan colleague went to Middle Eastern restaurants a lot. It had changed so much when I went there last month- plenty of wonderful vegetarian options. And the horsemeat stand at the Victuallenmarkt was gone.

How can a person say in with all seriousness, "I got a sinus infection because I slept under a fan"? This is 2022, infections are caused by bacteria or viruses, not by air movement. Of course, she also believes you catch a cold if you go to bed with wet hair. DH claims having the ceiling fan on too high at night dries out his eyes. But aren't they closed while he's sleeping?

She has become the best dog ever. I guess it is true that it takes as long as a year for a shelter pet to truly adapt. She's still awfully bossy for someone who only weighs 12 pounds, but she is actually well-behaved and sweet. Of course, as I said before, my grandkids hardly ever come over here (I go to their house) so she is happy to say she hasn't seen Carrie in a year or more. They both have had time to mature, I hope.

And as always, I think, "why didn't I do all this earlier so I could enjoy it?" The listing screams old people furniture with the over stuffed chairs and couches, beds, dressers, etc. Not enough to be antique but not in any recent style. The daylight basement has little furniture in it. That was where his late wife had two rooms of quilting equipment Shand she had specified where she wanted that donated. A grandson bought a house and took the other furniture from there. It wouldn't surprise me if he would give a buyer a painting allowance but since all of the major items have been replaced in the last 5 years, unless something would show up on inspection, he's not replacing the a/c. All of the paint is neutral. They had started getting it ready to sell when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. 20 years younger than him and they thought in much better health. She had decided it was too big for her to care for when he was gone. Things didn't work in that order so now it's him who is selling the house. I so want one of those gorgeous quilts, but I can see them not appealing to would be buyers who have no idea of the work that goes in to them.

I recently read an article about how to make a house sell. They said to get rid of the heavy, dark, mahogany furniture. Young people don't like it.

Thank you! It’s a modest brick house, in a quiet neighborhood. I bought it when I was 29yo and a single parent. It’s not fancy, but it’s nicer than anything my Mom could afford, whether it’s renting or buying. Anyway, I’m not going to start ranting again, I’ll just deal with it tomorrow.

The house hubs is cleaning will look nice. I picked out a more current light beige paint the same that is in our house. He is painting the whole house the same color. There will be new blinds, everything will be clean. I'm going to look over the woodwork and either wash down with Murphys oil soap or go over it with a gel stain. I have to work on cleaning the commode, if it can't be cleaned good enough he will replace it. Lots of hardwater crust down in it. I usually take a screwdriver to that stuff after CLR and a pumice stick.
The kitchen cabinets are not old and dated, haven't looked at the hardware yet, if it's not good we will replace it. All new floor coverings, new tub surround. New hardware on the tub and sinks. New countertop and sink in kitchen. We decided against trying to fit in a dishwasher. Stove, fridge, W/D, microwave are all white, will be cleaned. When we get done will look very nice, current, and clean. It will sell well, never had one of ours that did not. Around here a nice, quality brick house in town will sell. I have nice valance curtains for the kitchen, light, nothing overwhelming. I always put out new towels in the bathroom and kitchen, new throwrug, a bar of soap. In the kitchen new kitchen towels laid out, dishwasher detergent under the sink. Oh some TP in the bathroom too. Just items so someone can come in when moving, shower, and wash dishes if need be. It just adds a nice touch. We have a stylish clock we may put up there too, haven't decided yet.
Hubs has some rotten wood on the garage eaves he will replace, anything that would be called out in an inspection will be fixed. We will power wash the patio and I may plant a few flowers outside too. It has a cute little breezeway also. A nice 2 bedroom house.
We are thrilled the one hubs did so much work on and my classmate bought is just pristine. Sadly he didn't even live 6 months. But she has the place looking like a dollhouse, the front built in flower beds are gorgeous and the whole place is clean and well cared for. Makes you feel good.

We got the first of the corn coming off this year, peaches and creme corn, its wonderful. And they picked their first cantaloupe today so I have been eating it.
With that will be cheeseburgers and fries, the kids and hubs favorite, so getting ready to get dinner. Oven is heated up and water boiling.
And they gave me something that rarely happens anymore, the bakers dozen. That means 13 ears of corn instead of 12, that way if one is bad you still have a dozen. they used to always do that.

slice it the long way - not the spaghetti squash - then bread and fry like eggplant or chicken cutlet. it's fantastic, and probably outside your normal routine (you don't post about much Italian stuff). sometimes I'll bake that with red sauce and cheese, other times I just snack on it cold. for the spaghetti squash, this is my go-to link this is what I was making the night I went to the ER in a snowstorm, b/c my hand was still numb at dinner and I wanted a sanity check. I'll pass on repeating the whole saga here, but this recipe is solid and is one I share often. it's super versatile, and freezes well after cooking. I always add spinach and sliced mushrooms to the mixing bowl without sauteeing, to keep them from disintegrating on baking. just consider how hearty your mix-ins are, and whether they can handle both sauteeing and baking. and, add all of the cheese. because cheese is important. Yummy, but I've been doing Weight Watchers since January. I have actually lost 30+ pounds, but that's only about halfway to my goal. So no to cheeses, frying, etc. My cooking these days depends solely on baking/broiling and adding zero-calorie spices. I love zucchini. I cut it into spears, spray just a little (to make the spices stick) with Olive Oil Pam, and sprinkle with Italian or Greek seasoning mix. It has almost no calories. Still, you can only eat so much squash, no matter how good it is. We're on WW too so we do a lot of spiralized zucchini and yellow squash as very tasty sub for pasta. I sort of undercook it so there's still some crunch. I use ground turkey with bottled marinara and a ton of dried herbs and spices to go on top. Yummy AND point friendly

SIL is making a last minute pilgrimage this weekend to see in laws and will stay overnight with us so I probably ought to do some cleaning...later You are a good friend.
