Last night, I came out of the bathroom to find the freezer door on my refrigerator wide open and I could not figure out why. That had never happened before. I went to see the grumpy Toddler this afternoon. When I came in the house, Amelia was on top of the refrigerator. I went to the bathroom. I heard a thump when she got off the fridge. I come out and the freezer door is wide open. Any suggestions on how I can make sure this stays closed while I am gone for a week? Are there locks I can buy. I can't stop her from getting up there. For whatever reason, this is a new habit and I don't think I can break it in a week. I have food in there that I don't want to spoil. Thanks for any advice. Amazon sells toddler-proof fridge latches. We had one when our kids were little. Ours worked well. Looks like they've re-designed them a bit, but hopefully they're "furbaby-proof".

Good morning, fabulous invisipeeps of Y Ma'am. Welcome to Thursday. Already! I hope your day rises to the height of your hopes and all your plans are fulfilled.
Yesterday I hired a lawn company to clean up the yard including the woefully overgrown back yard and mow everything. It's been looking sadly neglected. Bunnies explode in the air like popcorn when we let Franklin the Dog out. Also yesterday I bought some things we needed, including an outdoor umbrella stand, a dog bed and some food.
No one is coming today to assess, estimate or work on anything that I know of. Time to get some order here. We won't be fully setting everything up until the MBR floor is replaced and the interior is painted, so about one and a half weeks, then we'll get the POD delivered and empty it out. Then we can see what other furniture we'll be needing.
Tomorrow I'm off early in the morning to see DS in Manhattan. It has been far too long.

I got the chest freezer defrosted and threw away at least 60 pounds of meat which was a little sickening, but it's super old. Well, it's not technically thrown out yet, it's bagged up in the freezer and I'm going to get up when DS does at 5am to beat the garbage man. I don't want to have it outside overnight when it's so hot. I really hope we don't miss him though or I will have a disgusting smelly mess when I get home! I understand the mindset of having a lot of food in the house, especially when you have a family to feed or have been through food scarcity, but this makes me sad. Here's just one article on food waste and its consequences. They don't even mention the financial consequences (food paid for and then thrown out). www.hhfb.org/news/how-to-reduce-food-waste/?gclid=CjwKCAjwk_WVBhBZEiwAUHQCmcbOQudGhFet8oVcFS1--4uVeCliY8r5XOVuV4BqdE4y2oI1bm8fvhoCNDEQAvD_BwECG had also posted awhile ago about throwing out cooking oil that had gone rancid and canned goods from 3+ years ago. Isn't there a way to keep track of what's stored so it gets used, and buy only what you can use before it goes bad? My grandparents were the opposite- raised 5 kids during the Great Depression- and to them it was a sin to throw anything out. Sometimes they over-ate to consume that last little bit of food on the serving dish rather than throw it out. I lean in that direction although with freezers and microwaves there are plenty of ways to save what I don't eat at a meal. We all have our food hangups, I guess. Yesterday I hired a lawn company to clean up the yard including the woefully overgrown back yard and mow everything. It's been looking sadly neglected. Bunnies explode in the air like popcorn when we let Franklin the Dog out. I love this image! Younger people are not impressed by 3 bedrooms with beautiful handmade quilts on the beds and matching wall quilts. I don't know how to tell him it's time to get that furniture out of there. You could suggest he talk to his realtor about whether emptying or staging the house would help. One thing I learned when DH and I sold our last house was how so many people were unable to overlook the superficial. Ours WAS staged -mostly someone came in and told us what to remove, to put lots of folded fluffy white towels in the bathrooms, what furniture to move, etc. So, nothing elaborate or expensive. The feedback still included complaints about things like light fixtures being outdated and the appliances not being stainless steel.

Hi, everyone! We hd a fun time in Seattle until DH woke up Tuesday morning with COVID. He didn't realize that was what happened until the evening though. It turns out he got it from DD#1. She was only testing herself to prove to him that the tests she had from her school were accurate. DH's test line was faint, so he tried to deny it was positive. DD#1 took the second test from the same box to show him what a negative result would look like. Except her test was positive. She did another one in hopes that it was a false positive. Nope. It's a true positive. She's completely asymptomatic. DH is at the "really bad cold". We came home a day early. I went to get Bill the Dog from the boarder. While there, a contractor showed up at our new house to work on a kitchen wall. Both DH and I completely forgot that was scheduled to happen today. We weren't supposed to be here! DH had actually fallen back asleep (unheard of for him except when he's really ill), and he answered the door in his underwear.
I "liked" this because the last line made me .

I wouldn't say I have a food hangup and I've never been through anything remotely related to food scarcity. I think it's just a lack of organization on top of the fact that we don't eat a lot of red meat outside of hamburger. I get a quarter or a side of beef as payment from the neighbor for planting corn on my land and my Ex loves to give me venison even though I don't like it except for sausage and ring bologna. My son likes it though and claims he wants it but never makes it! This is the first time in probably 5 or 6 years that I've defrosted the freezer so it's kind of built up. Most of what I threw was things like soup bones, spare ribs, liver...cuts I didn't want or didn't know what to do with. This time when I put in my order I told them I didn't want those so maybe they have something they do with them besides toss them.

I like the idea of having things you won't use excluded from the order. I hope they can give the extra to someone who needs it! I don't like organ meats at all so they'd be a complete waste in my house.

I made the mistake of mentioning something about the Jan 6th commission and it set DH off because he's so angry that no one is being arraigned, tried, convicted and jailed. I won't make that mistake again but it's hard when that's all that's on the TV in our house 24/7. We can't have a conversation about anything now. I miss a partner in life.

I often buy reduced price beef cuts and use my Ninja food processor to "ground" it.

Several meetings cancelled this AM due to "issues in production". Not sure what the issues are, but they are sure to impact me at some point today.

A newish friend of mine has a father going thru cancer treatment and surgeries since Jan/Feb. He's on medicaid. They haven't seen any of the bills and are really concerned about how much they might owe. I've never dealt with medicaid. They've tried contacting their hospital assigned social worker but I'm sure he/she is backlogged. Does anyone have any advice on coverage or timing of bills?

That's going to be hard to answer because Medicaid coverage varies widely by state.

We're in Missouri. I'm not sure if the father is 65+. I'm not sure what type of cancer.
Crazy thing is that one of the surgeries left him with an ostomy. My friend happened to mention a major bowel resection a couple of months ago. So I asked if he ended up with an ostomy. She wasn't familiar with that word so I said bag, and she quietly said yes. So I said DH has one too. She was confused and said we must be talking about different things. She's seen DH around school and at the kids' events. She said there's no way he has one. She even pulled up a photo of her father's that she had sent to home healthcare. Um, yeah same thing. This is why DH is open about his - to help people. We dropped off donated supplies and a bunch of info at their house last night.

Up and did our small scale decorating for ds birthday. He doesn't care about them but I do.
Working, then doctors appt, more work, and hopefully off early. Dh is taking the kids to the lego store to pick out a set each between sports and music lessons and we'll go out for ice cream tonight.

Between Medicare and my federal BCBS insurance, I paid nothing for the 4 hospitalizations and gall bladder surgery a few years back.

I thought of you, countrygirl2 , because the church garden is producing so much squash (Yellow, zucchini, and spaghetti) that we are all getting a little tired of it. We wanted to give a lot of this away, but we don't really have an outlet. It isn't enough for a food bank, and our shut-ins are tired of it, too. I brought home a huge zucchini to roast. I refused another spaghetti squash just because I ate it the last two days. I guess I need to look up now to freeze some of it! slice it the long way - not the spaghetti squash - then bread and fry like eggplant or chicken cutlet. it's fantastic, and probably outside your normal routine (you don't post about much Italian stuff). sometimes I'll bake that with red sauce and cheese, other times I just snack on it cold. for the spaghetti squash, this is my go-to link this is what I was making the night I went to the ER in a snowstorm, b/c my hand was still numb at dinner and I wanted a sanity check. I'll pass on repeating the whole saga here, but this recipe is solid and is one I share often. it's super versatile, and freezes well after cooking. I always add spinach and sliced mushrooms to the mixing bowl without sauteeing, to keep them from disintegrating on baking. just consider how hearty your mix-ins are, and whether they can handle both sauteeing and baking. and, add all of the cheese. because cheese is important. Yummy, but I've been doing Weight Watchers since January. I have actually lost 30+ pounds, but that's only about halfway to my goal. So no to cheeses, frying, etc. My cooking these days depends solely on baking/broiling and adding zero-calorie spices. I love zucchini. I cut it into spears, spray just a little (to make the spices stick) with Olive Oil Pam, and sprinkle with Italian or Greek seasoning mix. It has almost no calories. Still, you can only eat so much squash, no matter how good it is.

I rarely have any meat to throw away. We just buy enough for 3 or 4 months at a time. Buying a half beef for us would be useless. I just buy the cuts we like and we get a lot of ground beef from Odon. It's not fatty, really, really good meat. Can't say enough about it.
But next time we go I'm pre ordering beef heart and liver, love both and they are always out. It's inexpensive there also and from young cattle, small and tender.

I have another question. My 85 year old former boss put his house on the market. I looked at the photos on Zillow. He told me yesterday that he has only had 4 showings in a week and no offers. How do I tell him he needs to get the "old people" furniture out of there and either stage it or leave it empty. I don't know which they do where he is. I would think a house going for that would be staged. Younger people are not impressed by 3 bedrooms with beautiful handmade quilts on the beds and matching wall quilts. I don't know how to tell him it's time to get that furniture out of there. I'm cheap and would tape the freezer shut for your trip. You could also try putting upside down contact paper on the top of the fridge so it's sticky. She'll probably decide not to go up there. Where is your bosses house? If it's colorado the decor won't matter. If he's not getting showings it's prices too high. My sil is a realtor and she's really big on everything being updated and perfect when listed. I'll agree that she has a point that with prices so high, a lot of buyers don't have enough leftover after closing to do updates themselves. But still dated kitchens and baths will sell, and if it's just the furniture that is dated I don't think it will impact much. It's in southern Aurora and is a beautiful house. He thought it was priced too high with interest rates going up. It has a new furnace and roof, stainless appliances. All mechanicals have been replaced within the last 5 years. I hope his realtor can set him straight or my boss flat tells the realtor that it's overpriced. He thought it was when they set the price. I spent $20 on a kid lock for the freezer. It should be here tomorrow and looks like I can actually install it. Appears roommates have to do this to keep from feeding the entire apartment.

I'm glad your DH is open about his- like many "things we don't talk about", a lot of damage is done by secrecy. I really admire Betty Ford for her openness about her breast cancer and her pill addiction. She helped so many people.

MPL - you're taking some heat for throwing the frozen foods away, but I want to say kudos for making progress. I know you've mentioned that sometimes you get stuck wondering where to start on some of your 'home piles'. You take care of two kids, work hard, have a significant number of physical chores, etc. It's no wonder you get behind sometimes. I think you're doing the right thing by making a dent. Doesn't matter if folks think you didn't choose 100% the best way. Whatever. Sometimes you have to use less than ideal measures to solve a problem.

I saw the Medicaid statements and that was it. They did show the client owed nothing. As with anything with the government, they are very slow to come.
I get my Medicare statements electronically.
If your friend has been receiving them electronically, they have to get in to her account to see them.
Even on my surgery, the bills kept coming for a few months. I did get EOB's from BCBS along with the Medicare statements.

Price range impacts the need - higher end is taking longer right now. But inventory is still low. I hope he gets some offers soon.

I was feeling guilty about it, but I knew if i didn't toss it it would just end up in my freezer another year. The new side is going to be ready next Monday and this is the last time the garbage is coming before then so the freezer would have just been more cluttered than it already was. God, I hope the garbage man comes today. I don't know what I'll do if for some reason he doesn't show! I'm planning on being more deliberate with using things this time. I packed everything remaining from the chest freezer (except for frozen dried peppers) into the freezer in the kitchen and we're going to eat out of there first. There's a couple steaks and a roast left and lots of venison which DS needs to either eat or return to his dad.
