On another random note, I love this picture Mister took of Boy a couple days ago. He looks like such a big boy, and not at all like the pest that he is in real life lol. He is a real PITA, and works my nerves on a regular basis, but he is also so loving and lovable at the same time, despite being a PITA, that I can’t imagine life without him. Mister loves Newbie, but he and Boy have a very special bond. We got Boy when he was 6 weeks old, right before Mister’s Mom went in the hospital last August, and Boy has been a real source of comfort for Mister since then. Boy LOVES him some Mister, and Mister loves him right back, just as much. But Mister does acknowledge that Boy IS a pest. LOL! He's a cute pest though.

Nobody cleans them up around here. Within a few days, a week at the most, the coyotes, bald eagles and turkey vultures have completely taken care of it. Bit what about the bones? Do those get picked up? It's all gone after the animals are at it for awhile. I imagine the coyotes drag it off to take to pups or just be away from the road a ways as they don't like to be seen around here. Occasionally you'll see bones in the ditches, especially in the early Spring or in the Fall after the weeds die off, but nature does a pretty good job of using it's resources.
Remember, I don't live in a city. There are woods and fields all around. In town the city removes them. A dead deer in the Taco Bell parking lot is not going to be left there. 99% of the deer kills are in rural areas though.

Neighbor is trying to get me to be weekly daycare for her dog. I don’t really want the responsibility and am ducking/being noncommittal while feeling guilty. I am getting better and better at saying no to things I do not want to do. I am not so good at it yet, that I don’t feel a twinge of guilt or something about it though. I’ve learned that sometimes the dread of doing a thing, is much worse than actually doing it. That includes wrestling with saying no to something you’d really rather not do. As I get older, I get more ornery about feeling like I don’t even need to explain why I said no. I said what I said, when i just said NO. Especially because explaining opens the door for folks to try to persuade me into thinking that my NO isn’t enough on its own, without a reason they consider “good enough” or try to argue with me. And I don’t need a reason to not want to do something just because somebody wants me to do it….. for their own reasons….. like to make their life easier, more comfortable, or less complicated, while it gives me more shit to do and complicates my own life, other than I DON’T FUCKING WANT TO DO IT. That’s the only reason I need. I am doing much better with that, but I still have room for improvement. So, let’s learn together. Say no, and hit me up if/when you feel bad about it, and I’ll talk you through it. I am actually better at a flat no but that’s not exactly how she rolls, and that’s not the only place where I need to learn to deflect in a way that says “no and stop asking” without giving offense. Luckily I’m out of town two of the next three Mondays The one I’m not I just won’t respond in time. Her daughter is DS’ friend and I’d like to preserve that. I’m deeply uncomfortable asking people to do things for me, while overly inclined to do things for other people, so I run into trouble maintaining boundaries with people that are totally comfortable not just asking but pushing a bit. I’m okay with doing this occasionally. I’m not okay with being responsible for it every week. Another case: the recent example where former supervisor was asking me to do unpaid work. It’s not entirely out of line to ask me to look over a paper with my name included as author, but he was asking me to check details etc and they have my lab notebook, he can ask someone who actually works for him to do that. I just didn’t get around to responding for a week. He was pissed, but couldn’t say so in an email, I didn’t apologize when I did respond and didn’t allow any space for his annoyance or anything to be my fault. Now his overly sensitive ego won’t go back to that well unless he really needs to because he’ll remember subconsciously what his ego perceives as a rejection Can’t burn the bridge entirely because I may need a reference from him at some point; delicate work. The bigger issue is that I think I may have annoyed one of the higher ups at my current job and can’t quite tell whether she disagreed with my premise or disagreed bc it was me saying it (but it was a valid point whether she agrees or not). I’m trying to learn on this interpersonal stuff but it’s a steep curve

I really want to be a reading specialist in the public schools. That's what I want to do with my life.
I figure it's not as crazy as folks who decide that they want to be a dr at 40. If I'm going to have to retrain, I'd like to retrain to do something I really want to do.

In another life I think I would have gone into sociology but I was told that is a "soft science" degree that doesn't make any money. My HS teacher was so disappointed when I said I was going into biology instead of the social sciences. Yeah . . .turns out there are A LOT of jobs that make money that are interested in sociology especially if you know statistics. At any rate they pay a hell of a lot better than stupid biology. Also when they threatened we'd be garbage men if we did not go to college they omitted the fact that our garbage men are city employees. Good pay, excellent benefits, a pension and they can retire at 55. ::Sigh:: I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I still aspire to be at least a principal scientist but I REALLY don't want to be pushed into a people manager position which is what that seems to be in corporate America. I definitely no longer want to be a technician that much I know.

Toying with going to South Dakota next year. It is potentially cheaper than Colorado and DH can relive his childhood vacation for a change. Sent off for visitors guides and now we wait. Planning is one of the most exciting parts for me. I love research. Have to tell you about my childhood vacation to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. Two lane roads in the 1960's. No cell phones. No a/c in cars. We stopped for gas. Since 3 of us went to the ladies restroom, it took a while. Dad and mom had to have a smoke. Gas station had a covered wagon so I wondered off to the covered wagon and was having fun. The car left without me. Sister in the backseat didn't bother to tell mom and dad I wasn't there. Mom eventually asked a question of me and I didn't answer. Sister then said I hadn't been there since the gas station. So frantic trip back to the gas station. Looking back, I feel for the gas station attendant who had a crying 8 or 9 year old wondering if she would ever see her family again. He fed me so much candy that I got sick. I remind myself that she was willing to leave me in South Dakota when she pulls some of the crap she does today. I think my Uncle L and Aunt K had 9 kids. They left one behind at Grandma and Grandpa's once. The way my Grandma told it, he was hiding when they left b/c he didn't want to leave. She said it took them about 2 hours to realize he was missing and return to pick him up. I would have never left a sibling behind. Your sister has always been a piece of work I guess. But you have your neices & nephews and us. We have your back.

She sent a text this morning. She has shingles. This is the 3rd time in her life, starting when she was a kid.
She has never had any kind of shingles vaccine because she's heard bad things about shringix. She did say the doctor said should get one and she will let her know the timing. I don't know if she will or not.
Sounds like she is pretty miserable.

Yeah, my sister and I fought like cats and dogs when we were younger but I can not imagine either of us staying quiet if mom and dad were driving off without the other.

My parents didn't drive off without Bob but they forgot he was sleeping in the car at the gas station. I went in with my mom to go to the restroom while my dad was pumping gas. My dad comes in to use hte bathroom as we are coming out. "Where is Bob?" "I thought he was with you" "I thought he was with you" Me: "He's sleeping in the backseat!" My dad took off like a bat of hell back to the car. I've teased my brother before and said he should consider himself lucky I spoke up I could have left him.

Who would want to go through that again?! Oh yeah. You can only get chicken pox once. Any reoccurrence after that is shingles and you can get them many times. Something to be aware of if you have shingles and you are around a person who hasn't either been vaccinated or had chicken pox previously you can and will give them chicken pox. My dad had to stay away from me on the day Abby was born because they thought my grandfather might have had Shingles. My parents came up the next day after it was confirmed my grandfather didn't have them. I am still not 100% sure if a rash I had with Abby was shingles or not. It went away shortly before I gave birth but it burned and itched like a mofo. It didn't look like a PUPS rash but I can't be sure.

They traveled, for him to paint store signs etc. The parents rode in the car, with the kids in the trailer they were pulling. After stopping for gas and the restroom, the family left. My mom was still in the restroom! Her sister thought it was hysterical! My cousins are much the same way. Very boisterous. All but one, who is sweet and quiet. WTF?

I can support the need to cull deer while being totally unwilling to pull the trigger, figuratively or literally. There’s a great video on what happened when they released wolves back into Yellowstone (I think, could’ve been Yosemite). It boils down to, the wolves ate a bunch of the deer and it unf*cked the whole ecosystem. Must have been Yellowstone. I know they did it there and (I just looked it up) never reintroduced wolves in California though one or two stray s made it here from Oregon. Eh, it was one of those big national parks out West that starts with a Y (I’ve been to both. They are not really all that similar. But my brain decided not to hold on to the info necessary to check to box that says “are you sure?”)

Pretty sure the programs keep track of all the numbers for you My supervisor way back when noted that the closer you get to the money, the better the pay. You might be good at technical sales-you can talk intelligently about the day to day pros and cons of using systems and kits.

DH and I took DS on his first college visit today. we went to LeMoyne in Syracuse, a small Jesuit school in Syracuse. He seemed to really like it. Then we went to SUNY Oswego. I wasn’t as impressed. The campus is huge (although very pretty since it’s on the shore of Lake Ontario). And it’s right next to a nuclear power plant. We still are going to look at St Lawrence, Clarkson, Syracuse, and SUNY Plattsburgh. DD was talking about colleges last night. She seems to have her heart set on RPI. Are the schools he's looking at still test optional?
I was looking at the common data set for our flagship and the test scores of admitted students are up like 3 or 4 points above what they were when DS applied in 2019 because the only students submitting now are the ones with high scores. This sure adds another level of complexity to applying. Do you turn in a "decent" but not great score or not? I wish it was either test required, or tests not considered at all.

ahh...it's finally dried out enough outside that I can move my workstation out to the deck. it's supposed to be dry the rest of the week, so we'll be out here as much as possible. Punk is sprawled out on the ground near the deck, just happy panting and smiling. LD went back in the house b/c I pulled back on his leeway and contained him to the deck. he got up to bolt and howl, and wasn't putting the healing leg down for it. you overdid it, buddy and you're back on total lockdown. he walked back in the house on all four paws, so hopefully the damage is minimal.

She was saying how sentiment on 4 year college being the end all, be all, only option when she went to school. It's too bad we were mostly taught to look down on honest work. There was only one person in my life who told me (and others) that honest work is honest work, and you do it the best you can, with no shame attached. It doesn't matter if it''s cleaning bathrooms or being a rocket scientist. That was one of my professors.

It was later revealed the High Schools get massive kick backs for sending as many people as possible to college. I imagine that's still the same today. My brother at the time wanted to be a fireman. The school actually pulled my parents into a conference to explain their concern about Bob not being ambitious enough and how he would never amount to anything if he didn't go to college. My dad laughed in their faces. A fireman isn't being accomplished? Really? I would LOVE to have seen those guidance counselors try to pass the test. I am still floored that they were able to say with a straight face that being a fireman is not a "worthwhile" career. TBF though my brother is unambitious just not in the way the school meant it. I had a couple of professors try to reason with me and be realistic about my goal of being a PhD/professor. They tried encouraging me to explore other options within science but I didn't listen. They were just being negative. I owe them an apology.

I definitely no longer want to be a technician that much I know. Sociology is one of those degrees where you really need a masters degree. The government's Occupational Handbook backs that up, listing a masters degree as the typical entry-level education. Depending on how much education you were willing to get upfront, I am not sure you were steered wrong. Where would you be now with a masters in biology? I don't know your field that well, but you should always compare apples to apples. And do you want to BE a garbage collector? It probably isn't too late. You can leave your college degree off the application. Not me! There are some jobs that I don't want to do no matter how good the benefits and pension. Plus, that particular job is getting more and more automated. You might be lucky to hang on until you are 55. I know you are frustrated. You have been frustrated for as long as you've been on this board. I don't mean that in a bad way, and you know it! If I had to pick one person who needs to go back to school for retraining, it would be you. Have you ever thought about exploring the option of becoming a high school science teacher? The pay isn't great (you probably make more now), but the pension and benefits are good. And I do feel that passion for science when you talk about your jobs. Science teachers are usually in high demand, often qualifying for emergency certificates as they get credentialed. Or there are bona fide universities that offer distance learning options. Don't let the cost deter you. There are programs that will help. The supply of education majors is dwindling, and that is particularly true in math and science. Ok, I will take off my "Encouraging Teacher" hat. Can you tell I have been hanging out at the high school, substituting a lot these days?

I agree, and also I think it was a different time 60 years ago.
I'm not excusing, just tempering. FWIW, I'm totally projecting. For me, it's hard to hear someone else make that comment about your parents, and therefore your existence, even if it is true.

And do you want to BE a garbage collector? It probably isn't too late. You can leave your college degree off the application. Not me! There are some jobs that I don't want to do no matter how good the benefits and pension. Plus, that particular job is getting more and more automated. You might be lucky to hang on until you are 55.Actually yes I am too old to start as a garbage man. That's one of those jobs where they don't want you starting past 35 which makes sense due to physicality and how close that puts you to being able to walk out the door with a pension. It is also heavily unionized which is not a bad thing but it tends to be a "my grandfather was a garbage man, my dad was a garbage man" type of set up around here. It's a pretty good gig. That's more what I meant about the school disparaging it in favor of college. I encourage Gwen to really LOOK at careers don't turn your nose up at stuff that doesn't require or expect a traditional 4 year+ college route. The jobs here at my current company that would take sociology degrees only require bachelor's degrees. They take them for the customer side of things like product development, marketing etc. IDK what they pay but I am betting it's more than the $20k I started out with.

Sociology is one of those degrees where you really need a masters degree. The government's Occupational Handbook backs that up, listing a masters degree as the typical entry-level education. Depending on how much education you wee willing to get upfront, I am not sure you were steered wrong. I don't mean that in a bad way, and yo know it! The supply of education major is dwindling, and that is particularly true in math and science. Ok, I will take off my "Encouraging Teacher" hat. Can you tell I have been hanging out at the high school, substituting a lot these days? Just to point out that some places that offer post baccelaurate degree programs in teaching certification offer scholarships. At least in my neck of the woods.
I was just poking around WGU. It's competency based. I know about formative and summative assessments, active learning, flipped classroom and all of that. If I can prove I have the competency, I get the credit I don't need to take a class.

Sister did it on purpose, sounds like. Kids can be little shits no question but I’m not letting the parents off the hook either. I agree, and also I think it was a different time 60 years ago.
I'm not excusing, just tempering. FWIW, I'm totally projecting. For me, it's hard to hear someone else make that comment about your parents, and therefore your existence, even if it is true.
That’s fair. I do tend to be overly glib about these things. Edited slightly.

My brother in law has a sociology degree. He knew after graduation that he wanted a job with benefits. First state job he landed was a drivers license examiner. Worked that job for a couple of years and then got hired at the state department of labor as a job service rep. After a few years of that he applied and was hired for a position with the circuit court system. Did he make 6 figures a year, no. But he did have interesting jobs with a pension and benefits that followed him from one to the next, yes. DH and I thought it was a pffft degree when he finally finished it. Turns out employers do want people with a sociology degree.
He never named names, but I always loved hearing about the "criminal of the week" when he worked for the courts.

I didn't know you could get shingles multiple times. I would think after the first time she would get vaccinated. Who would want to go through that again?! She was 11 or 12 when she got them the first time and she was quite sick. No vaccination back then, but you would have thought by now she would be vaccinated.
