I am also kinda stuck because while I am not pissed and understand life happens but I'd like to know more about WHY I didn't the associate but yet I am apparently worth it enough to be a tech? Was it my degree even though the job requires a bachelor's? Am I missing a skill? Do they edge me out in the more tech oriented/flavor of the month stuff that my last company didn't really do? If I make this lateral move will I obtain said whatever it is and be able to move up to an associate position or will I always be "just a tech" because of the ever present biases in science when it comes to job titles? If I am "just a tech" can I grow in my duties and responsibilities? As it is down here you do a lot of backwards steps and it takes a LONG time to develop, let alone get promoted. So I am not sure I want to waffle around waiting to see if my day will come because my position doesn't lend itself to that and there is good motivation to keep me in my same spot. But I don't want to move and end up upstairs making media all day and nothing else either. Do you actually want my skills and to use my skills or are you checking a box because you need it filled and know I want in? I know I can never get the answers to all those questions but it makes this decision harder.

DD11 needs to learn that we don't wash volleyball kneepads after every practice and game. Kid doesn't even want to wash herself that often ROFL. I needed that laugh. I remember having kids her age and it triggers funny memories.

Our area is/has become unaffordable. I hope that changes but I expect it to be a long painful process if it does. The apartment we rented 25 years ago is more than double what we paid back then, gas is 4x as much, used car prices are... I don't know the percentage but a lot more expensive than back then to get a decent vehicle. And wages aren't much more for the same jobs we had at that point. $15 an hour hopefully vs. The $10 we were earning then. I don't know how my kids will afford this area if they want to stay in it and I hate to think of them moving far away. My vision when I moved here was to return to Boulder after my parents passed. That isn't going to happen if I want to eat.

My initial questions would be why didn't you get the associate microbiologist position and why they think you should take the micro tech II position. What does that position involve that makes you a good fit? What made you not a good fit for the associate microbiologist position? I'd also like to know if it was someone inside or outside the company that got that position. On the Micro Tech II job, is it on the same career path as the associate microbiologist position? Does it showcase the skills that you have / want to have noticed to advance in your career? I'm the humanities sibling, so excuse my ignorance on all the positions and what they involve, etc. They said it was extremely close but the other person fit better with the direction they were considering taking the position. Micro Tech II would be a lateral move but it would put in the Microbiology department which is where I originally wanted to go. I took the job I am in now to get my foot in the door. Also the direction my current department was going in was different at the time I was hired. We've changed direction 3x since I've been here. At the moment it looks like we are going to firmly be QC which is not a direction I really want to go in. If I got anything out of the histology job it was learning that QC environments are not for me. It keeps me paid and I like the people I work with. I am not unhappy here like I was at my previous job. But I am turning 40. I am going to be entering the next phase of my career so I need to start asking myself questions. I don't want to keep drifting anymore. I accept that I will probably never feel again the way I did in college when I wanted to be a professor. Too much life experience in the working world to be that naive anymore. BUT I would like to develop and my development has stagnated since I left academics. I am "fine" with being a tech IF I can grow in that position like I did at UNMC. I don't want to be a tech that is shoeboxed into doing all the QC tests and grunt work while everyone else gets to grow. That seems to be where we are headed in my current department. But IDK a lot about the other lab either. They claim their techs get to do more and I know the one person who left did a lot in the lab. I would be on the bench more which is what I want but am I going to be stuck up there too? Is there any possibility of you needing managerial skills for the job you lost? It’s one thing to have the lab skills, but what *I* grappled with was learning the managerial skills that became required for my position. I wasn't so happy doing the manager stuff, but it did become a decent sized chunk of my job, and I did learn to understand why it was important for me to have those skills to proceed. The science knowledge only goes so far.

Listening to a rooster crow. He starts at 3:30 in the morning when it’s still dark and goes until after dark in the evening. I never knew how many people in this neighborhood have chickens until I stopped working, was home all day and started walking the neighborhood. Over half of the people on my walking route have chickens. One family has their back yard fenced, which is next to the bike path. The chickens come running whenever they see someone on the bike path and pace the person as far as they can, telling them all about their day. The only jerk is this one rooster that I’d love to drop kick into a neighboring town. I guess I'm "lucky" then that my neighbor's rooster doesn't start crowing until 4:30 AM. Thankfully, I leave for work by 7:00 AM every day, or it may get annoying. Also, I can only hear it when I'm in my extra bedroom at the front of my house while I'm getting ready in the morning. It's kind of funny to hear, actually, because I live in a normal residential area that neighbors the county line on two sides, so there are people with chickens, horses, donkeys, etc. The donkey brays randomly throughout the day and is kind of funny, too.

I wasn't so happy doing the manager stuff, but it did become a decent sized chunk of my job, and I did learn to understand why it was important for me to have those skills to proceed. The science knowledge only goes so far. Maybe. IDK. Here it's Lab Tech 1, II, Associate, Chemist and Senior Chemist. To get to Senior Chemist you have to have managerial skills. IDK how it works entirely upstairs. And it depends on what we mean by managerial skills. I have been lab manager that just isn't an actual title at UNMC. I would hope if those were required skills it would have been mentioned then I would have highlighted them in my resume. I think some of it is in there but not something I focus on unless I know I need to. If we're talking people manager skills that is not an area I have a lot of development in. Which is why I would have liked a bit more clarification as to why I didn't get it. If you are going to met with me in person to discuss it rather than just send a generic email at least give me a little more detail so if it is something I CAN develop I can choose whether or not to pursue it. Or if it was like the university and not having a master's is getting in my way then I got other decisions I may need to make regarding staying at this company overall long term. And that would give me more of an idea if I want to make the lateral move. If it is a skill that would not get me a decent ROI staying where I am is a better bet because I already know the department and they know me. I should stick here and work towards a potential promotion here. If it is an easy to obtain skill, one I can obtain in their lab through experience or one I already have but didn't think to highlight then getting myself into their department makes sense before I try again. Now I can add all that AND I am already in the department.

I'm putting in an Amazon order, for 2pr of my squishy Teva flip flops, and another couple of tunic tops for interviews/in-person time. my newer pair, I'd left outside upside down to allow the soles to get rained on and clean off the poop I stepped in somewhere. well, I just checked on them, and I left them out a little too long as one is getting a little moldy. oh well. lesson learned. I'm currently sitting outside under the big umbrella, with another smaller golf umbrella set up over the back of my chair. that's keeping my work materials and me all dry. Punk is airing out in the rain, down below me, and LD keeps coming and going as the drizzle intensifies and fades. my dumpster fire of a CMO site isn't finishing their shit today, and will seep into tomorrow. but I have all of Friday off (LD's staple removal appointment is 930am) and after seeing the 7day forecast earlier, I'm 99% sure I'm taking Tuesday off as well. I always extend Labor Day weekend for my birthday. I may not have realized that's where the calendar already was until yesterday, but I intend to not worry about a damn thing for a couple days over that time.

I've finally accepted that goats would be too loud in our neighborhood. The chickens are loud enough but thankfully we have big lots. My in-laws are on more typical suburban sized lots and they are always complaining about the neighbors chickens.

No, just a regular residential neighborhood outside of the main city limits. There may well be restrictions on things (I know there is re: the number of dogs and cats per residence, haven’t looked up livestock rules) but good luck getting anything enforced around here.

I've finally accepted that goats would be too loud in our neighborhood. The chickens are loud enough but thankfully we have big lots. My in-laws are on more typical suburban sized lots and they are always complaining about the neighbors chickens. We fight the chicken battle (plus ducks and geese) regularly in my community. They are banned by the City unless they are at least 100' from any residential building, which means they are not legal on our 65 X 100 lots. And all livestock is banned by our deed restrictions. But none of that stops folks so we discover and report poultry, and the occasional goat or pig. They are all being raised for consumption (except for the fighting cocks), and one incident involved a goat being slaughtered on-site. The City does confiscate any reported livestock and puts them up for adoption through the ASPCA except the fighting cocks which are euthanized because they are dangerous. And then there are the peacocks and peahens which are truly feral and a royal pain. Animal control doesn't even waste time trying to catch them as loose dogs and coyotes keep the population within bounds.

I think doing that would also tell said hiring manager that you know how to take constructive criticism and improve.

This Morning my DN1 (the oldest he is going to be 42 in Fall) called me b/c his friend in a local School District is recruiting for a Technology Teacher and is desperate. They are willing to hire his younger brother (DN2, 29) on, give him a $15,000 raise and match the personal time off he is being offered from his current job due to pretty serious health issues for the younger brother's newborn, The baby was born July 31 and has not yet been released from the hospital. He had heart surgery and will have another surgery soon. I think he will go home tomorrow or Friday. Anyways, the offer is $15,000 over current salary + a $5,000 signing bonus which he can choose to take as a lump sum or added to his salary. The person offering the job said the signing bonus would be added to the salary before the salary increase, they are currently negotiating will be applied. He expects it to be between 4-8% and is hopeful that it will be in the 8% range. So DN1 called me saying he is frustrated b/c he can't make his brother understand how much $$ he is passing up. So, I told DN1 I would throw a spreadsheet together. I projected the salary for 10 years and totaled it up. My calculations came up with $200,546 more Job 2 vs Job 1 if he takes the $5,000 lump sum signing bonus, and $314,925 if he adds it to his salary, there is an 8% increase this year, 4% next year and then 2% COLA for years 3-10. I understand if DN2 feels it is too much to change jobs in the midst of his son's health issues, but it is really a lot of $$, and it would give his wife who is a nurse, more flexibility to take more time off if she feels it is necessary. DN1 lives in the district the job offer is in, but he works for a different school district in the same field. DNI has a Master's, and he works with Co-op students/employers and works with various area school districts, so he knows a lot of people in the Education field in the Southeastern area of our state.
Went to my mom's on my lunch hour and printed out her orders for her business so I could file her sales tax return for the 2nd Quarter of the year. She only had 2 orders she did not pay the sales tax on, so she owed $20.53. My DS also does the Sales Tax Returns for work, so she could do this for my Mom, but my DB would not have a clue. I want my mom to stop with the business. DB is on board too, but we don't know how to get Mom to remember she is supposed to stop.
Mom went to a funeral for the guy who sat behind us in church every week. She was at my DB's for a birthday party for 3 of his grandchildren on Saturday, so we did not go to church this week. A friend called her and let her know this gentleman passed. So, she went to the funeral this am, and the picture in the obituary in the local paper had a picture of the man when he was in his 20's - so, late 1950's or early 1960's. He was 92. Mom commented to me like 3 times that she did not remember what he looked like - and we last saw him in church 3-4 weeks ago.
DB wants my Mom to have a test done to see if she can continue to drive safely. He is going to be in Florida next week, so we will see when he gets back.
Mom told me yesterday her radio was not working, I called and asked DB to order on for her, b/c I just had too much going on to make a decision. After I got off the phone, mom told me he was headed to Florida. He is leaving at 4:30, but he ordered it - he told me it should be delivered to her house this evening.
I review mom's e-mail every day now and delete any request for donations from politicians/spam/donations/questionable vendors asking her to buy something. So what I leave is Nextdoor, Church, Family & Friends and Reputable Big Box e-mails. If I don't delete them, she will donate to anyone that asks for a donation and then claim she did not do it. There were 68 Winred donations in about 6 weeks before I started checking her e-mail every morning.
I have someone coming in tomorrow, so I have to tackle a few projects before I leave today. It is fairly cool here today. I think the high will be 69. We left the windows open in the house last night and it was a bit chilly when I got up this am. Tomorrow it is going to be 73 degrees, then gradually the temps will raise to 94 for the long weekend.

A house behind my dad has chickens including a rooster. My dad is rooting for the giant hawks we've seen in the neighborhood. I don't think you are supposed to have roosters in city limits but I haven't looked that deep into it. Found it in Omaha you can not only have a pygmy goat but you can have one in an apartment it counts as a small dog. That did not help my case when telling Gwen she couldn't have one. It WAS pretty adorable in its pink sparkly harness.

I don't know. It wasn't on my street. I stopped on the way home to get food and saw this from the drive through. My GrS1 said he had a naked ranter on a bicycle in front of him in the McDonald's drive through. He's been making plans to move rural again. What can I say? At least there is very little chance the guy would pull out a hidden gun and start shooting if things went from bad to worse. My true "Dutch" must be showing itself. While I don't necessarily appreciate naked people running around in public they don't bother me near as much as the idea of nuts running around with guns.

Well, not good news. Hubs told me he had blood work and his PSI is 11. He had an ultrasound at a urologist and has to see his heart doc to see if he can get off blood thinner for a few days so he can get a biopsy. I said why didn't you tell me? He said why and have you worry all time you were gone instead of enjoying yourself. I am worried but we will see how it goes. He sees the heart doc this week and the urologist next week so will know more than. I have been reading, if its localized and not spread he may be ok with treatment. No matter I told him I will take care of him. Have spent my life doing that. Just hope he is ok, says even with it 98% a chance of 5 year survival depending on extent. We have been beyond fortunate so neither of us is complaining, sadly, its a part of life. I am sorry. Keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome for your DH.

I have that with my POS range - if the oven is on, anything that's on the stovetop gets nuclear hot - like pot lids if I rest them when I want to stir a pot. I've gotten in the habit of just leaving an "Ove Glove" on one hand while I'm cooking. and then it's like a "clean hand, dirty hand" situation in what I touch with which hand until everything is off. the learning curve took a little while, but I'm good with it now. good luck. Yeah, I'm less worried about DH and me and more about DD15 and DD11. Was thinking I could sew a potholder around microwave handle as kinda a cozie. We also got the air fry option on our oven which frees up air fryer appliance space (also needed to be replaced bc the grate inside rusted, yuck!). DH doesn't understand how much of a learning curve it will be for DD11 who was easily cooking in air fryer to the food onto a plate from the big basket with nice plastic handle. Now, she will be opening the oven and removing a hot pan. We do have sleeve length oven gloves that DD15 requested a few years ago. What about one of those safety belt covers they sell for kids in booster seats so the belts will not cut into their neck? I have a set (for DGS2) and really think that could work

I hate people. Some random lady was too busy talking on the phone to drive her car, so I started my turn because she missed it several times sitting at the stop sign talking. She couldn't stand the idea of me turning before her, so she darted out in front of me. I didn't hit her since I saw what she was doing. You know, because I was driving my car instead of talking on the phone. So of course she tries yelling at me. Just get off the phone and drive your freaking car!

Thx but this is 5th grade volleyball where 95% of the points are scored just by getting the serve over the net and only about 40% of the serves go over. There may be 2-3 true volleys back and forth per game. It's like watching paint dry and nobody gets sweaty. We are both biding our time until basketball season Along with harping at her to shower daily, we've also begun the "have you used deodorant" checkbox before she leaves the house. She doesn't truly need it yet but any day now the girl funk will start.

It's been a productive day. I submitted the vacation watch form to our security service, called my author back, knocked out 2 chapters of the book, ordered more coffee (had to talk to a human b/c website was down, that was painful), ordered more filters for the air purifiers, ordered more CBD gummies with melatonin and did not hurt any living being. Oh, and DH wanted to practice sharing photos on our iPhones which was interesting indeed.
Tomorrow I'm going to the storage locker and bringing home my fall decorations - it's still hot but I can look at pumpkins and pretend.

Now that I've had time to start decompressing I'm really upset about not getting that job.
I am so tired of getting back on the horse. Of making micro decisions hoping one day it may finally pay off. Tired of "leaning in" and all it ever gets me is more work.
I know I have a pretty good life especially compared to others.
It's just if you told me 20 years ago I'd still be a technician I may have reconsidered my career choices.
Maybe I should see if there is anything else internally I could explore. I'm not sure how much energy I want to put into that.
I'm still waffling. I don't even know if they will offer it to me which confused my manager manager he thought that was the meeting today.
IDK either. I'm a tad resentful and not sure I want the consulation prize. Not if it means I just stay stuck somewhere else. Not switching sample prep for media prep.
I'll switch for benchwork. Maybe I can talk to my manager about getting out of my hovel. That would help with deciding.

After a (for me) lifetime record of 14.5 hours of sleep, I have managed to empty my suitcase and put stuff away. Now to fill it up again - while not on travel I use it as storage for duffel bags backpacks, my snorkeling stuff, and other various travel rated items. I also put all my plants back to where they belong from their "vacation watering spot" and put all my outdoor things back in their place. The latter job was a result of the condo being painted outside while I was gone. Other items on today's to-do list were doing laundry and grocery shopping but I have plenty of clean clothes and, thanks to my freezer, enough food to last a few days so that all of that will be done tomorrow - maybe - no need to hurry back into regular life.

New stove and microwave delivered and installed. First world problem is micro stainless handle gets hot when stovetop is on.Told my boss that I'm expecting a new proposal from a client next week. Said that's all I know. He proceeds to ask how much business, what can we charge them, when's it due, etc. Dude I told you all I know. Slow your role. 10 mins later my phone rings...it's our head of sales asking the same questions, Apparently my boss gave him the 'heads up.' Is it any reason I'm burnt out? I survived the call by repeating I've told you all I know about 4x verbatim and he didn't even notice. Both guys spend way to much time chasing squirrels and shiny objects. I have that with my POS range - if the oven is on, anything that's on the stovetop gets nuclear hot - like pot lids if I rest them when I want to stir a pot. I've gotten in the habit of just leaving an "Ove Glove" on one hand while I'm cooking. and then it's like a "clean hand, dirty hand" situation in what I touch with which hand until everything is off. the learning curve took a little while, but I'm good with it now. good luck. Is there a particular ove glove that you like best? I've never heard of them, until your post. I'd like to get my DDs one. But don't want to waste my money on a crappy one. Thanks!

bean29 Good luck getting the state to decide your mother can't drive. My BIL couldn't get the State of Iowa to take away his mother's drivers license even though she had 3 serious accidents in a year's time. What got her to give up driving was the change in insurance. It was more than her income per month. All of her money had gone for 17 years in a nursing home for her husband, so she was living on her Social Security. She called him early in the morning, before he is usually hope. She used to milk cows so was an early riser. Told him to come get the car NOW. DS said she had never seen him get ready so fast. He had the paperwork with him to sign the car over to his sister and he left with the car. We were lucky because dad had been questioning his own driving ability and when they moved here, he was lost, so the car went to DN1 and his wife. They still drive it.

I've got two of the original "As Seen on TV" Ove Gloves - link that were gifted one at a time. I've never actually bought one, but will definitely do so when I retire these two.

A normal PSA level is about 4 from what a read, moderate is 4 to 10, 11 next level. He had blood work last year and was normal, so happened over the last year. I sure hope its just localized. He got an ultrasound today to make sure he is safe to do the biopsy and has antibiotics for it. I think he said it will be done the 7th. So we don't have long to wait. I have good feelings about it, so having a positive outlook at this point. But I told him depending on the outcome, we need to sell the one house and the other 2 first of next year, that part will be done.
Hubs brought us dinner home this evening after his docs visit. I was too knocked out after being up all night. I finally sat in the recliner while he was gone and Smoke and I went to sleep. It didn't take him long to be my baby again. I got up from the recliner and went to bed. Tig was there and continued to sleep but he is still standoffish. Smoke cuddled up and I rubbed his tummy and he and I slept for awhile. He is meowing at me and purring. When I sit in the recliner he stretches out on the back by my head. He went up to hubs for a bit to get petted but was back. I love my guy. They are just beautiful kitties. I need to get them both flea treatment tomorrow if I get to town.
I am not going to worry about hubby, I'm sure he will be fine. If he needs loving and cared for I will do it.
