I want to make pesto. My basil is growing like gangbusters. I needed pine nuts, so I went down to the huge grocery store down the hill. Surely, they have pine nuts. There's hardly anyone working there, it's all do it yourself. I did find 3 people working in the produce section. They all young men from the midde east. I asked them where I could find the pine nuts, and they stared at me with all the comprehension of a bull reading a bible. They had no idea what I was talking about. Anyway, I left without pine nuts. I finally found them at the smaller grocery store across the street, in tha en vrac section. (in bulk, take how much you want). So today, I'm making pesto. the last few times I have made pesto, I used walnuts. the first time, I didn't realize I was out of pine nuts til I had already chopped everything else. then I realized I liked it better. walnuts are typically cheaper than pine nuts, too. win-win!

I think the "no one wants to work" excuse is overblown. Have you been out and about lately and seen interaction between the workers and the public? I have witnessed very f'ing rude customers for no reason that I can see. Long lines at the pharmacy? Yeah, don't go at 4 pm when everyone's getting their newly prescribed meds filled. Don't yell at people for following the rules (like giving a birth date at the pharmacy). Don't get all nasty because you had to wait when the old woman at the checkout took a long time helping the even older man in front of you figure out how to use a VISA gift card.
Having seen a lot of these interactions over the last few years, I am resolved to try to thank people much more often.
I think that, in general, people do want to work. But they are gravitating toward work that limits interaction with the public. And rather than work for unreasonable employers they are finding ways to work free lance/self-employed.

Here's how I can sum up today: huh. It's been a head scratcher. I have been swamped. How'd it go NomoreDramaQ1015? I'm too lazy to look for a post.

I got attacked by a heavy duty yard cart on Amazon which will be perfect for a late bday gift for DH plus a few smaller things. Ironically, having said I wasn’t buying much Lego anymore, the minecraft red barn jumped into my target cart and hid under the school supplies

Today has been an interesting day. I had the random restaurant thrown at me again. I told the producer I don't know anything about restaurants aside from what I know from working in them years ago. I don't know how to insure them. So I sent it to someone who does.
Then I got a call from a different office who said they had a random trucking account that they didn't know what to do with it. I do! So I told them where I would go with it and they got declined already. Now I want to know why and I've been digging around on the FMCSA site trying to figure it out. I don't see anything so naturally, I have GOT to know. It's not even my account and it's driving me crazy.

I looked up PLGB. I am 48 and too old for that shit. No parking lots for me - I am worth much more. PLGB is now in my Google search history!🙀 And mine. I could have gone happily to my grave in another 25-30 years though without knowing this. However, my curiosity couldn't stand for the wait so there went another part of my tiny remaining vestige of innocence

What is pblg? I looked on Google and got something about pharmaceuticals in Great Britain?!?? It's PLGB. Which, according to the Urban Dictionary, is slang for inviting someone to have sex (possibly group) in a parking lot.

I did use the right letters looking it up, just not here. Oops. But thanks for the explanation.

That's probably true but he really is a pest. He bugs Newbie so much that I have to make him leave her alone sometimes. Fortunately, she’s mostly patient with him, but every once in a while he irritates her to the point that she gets a certain look in her eye that I don’t like when she snarls at him. So far, he understands her language and when she means business, he runs away from her and leaves her alone. But it still makes me nervous when she really gets sick of him, because I fear that one day he might challenge her instead of running away, and I don’t see that turning out too well.
He's always done that, Pink. This isn't new behaviour. With all the crap on your plate, from health issues to Mister's dad and family. etc., I'd be going nuts, tearing my hair out and yelling at tomatoes. Patience, mon ami, and courage! This too, shall pass.

I've used almonds, pistachios, walnuts and pecans in pesto. It all works. Pine nuts are hard to find here and when I do find them they are stupid expensive. I find I don't miss what I regularly don't taste so I don't even bother with trying to locate them anymore.
The interview went well. It was funny because HR schedules each one for a half hour each. I work with all these people! So a lot of that filler you do during interviews didn't apply. So we got to talking about other stuff in the lab. I had a productive conversation with my boss boss and his boss about some stuff we could do to improve my current position so that alone made it worth doing the interview I had a captive audience for a few things that we don't always get to talk about.
I was told I am a pretty strong contender but that doesn't mean I am a shoe in. I said I understood that and I told boss boss that they don't have to worry about me going anywhere. I said I am fine with my current position I am not unhappy. I said this is an exercise in going for something bigger/better. You can't do that in academia without the paper. My last company was only 150 people I could be manager and that's it. No thank you.
I said this is the first company I've worked for in my entire career where I have options. I said even if I don't get it I still win because I showed you guys I am interested in moving up/new things and I have put myself out of my comfort zone. I need to be comfortable pushing myself to apply and interview for jobs that I would have been rejected for in the first five minutes previously.
I need to be able to show I deserve to move up. I said that I have been incredibly lucky that my previous bosses outside my most current one allowed me room to grow but there is only so much of that you can do before it's time to consider moving up so you are earning the pay and have the title that comes with your new skills. I couldn't do that in academia so it became time to move on.
I said I will be honest last year was a shitty time for me to be entering a new position. I was in survival mode. Now that that is past and I am comfortable here it is time to start thinking about growing again and what types of irons can be thrown in the fire. This was one of the first ones I threw in. It doesn't work I move onto another one.
I talked a lot with boss boss about other options to grow both inside the lab I am in now and outside of it. He said he passed my flow cytometry experience off to the head of the microbiology department and he is interested. I am not currently interested in a lateral move to microbiology but if an associate pops up I would apply.
So this was really productive. I am glad I took everyone's advice and remember what I paid $495 for a career counselor for. It may not pay off in this particular position but it sounds like I am moving in the right direction for it to pay off way faster than it would have in academics.

Mister just informed me that he will be in his wannabe man cave for a while because he has a virtual appointment with his counselor. Uhhhh okay, how is that different from any other day? It’s not like we spend time together even though we live in the same house.
Yes, I am in a very pissy mood.

So, this Friday Houston will be hit with the first wave of our annual visit of Saharan dust. Which will make our air quality really suck, along a forecast of 99 degrees and an excessive heat advisory.
On brighter news, tomorrow at 9 am I will be evaluated and x-rayed by the new dentist, and have the opportunity to schedule a cleaning. Oh, joy.

Boy and I were sitting on the deck when we both heard something that got our attention. Boy jumped up and ran to that side of the deck, and a huge bird flew off the roof of the house. I was already wary when he was a small puppy, because of the warnings on the Neighborhood App about small pets and the predators around here. Boy isn’t so tiny anymore, but that bird looked like it was big enough to carry him away if it wanted to. Goooood grief!

Mrs. T just text me. Mr. T’s Mom passed and Mrs. T was letting me know that there will likely be a lot of cars in the cove after the funeral because he has a HUGE family. I don’t care about that, it’s fine with me. I have and will continue to pray for Mr. T and his family.

I'm sitting out with my two, both wiped out from daycare today. LD is passed out on the dog bed on the walkway. Punk is awake enough to pout that I'm "ignoring" her so she might actually nap a little.

yay! just got a text from the jeweller downtown. I dropped off my medical ID bracelet last week, to have my starfish charm soldered on. the woman I bought it from originally doesn't solder, she uses pincer pliers to close loops on things. I'm on my 2nd bracelet (I won't ever wear this particular one to walk the dogs again...) and 3rd starfish charm. I lost the last one on the Cancun/FL trip in the spring. I was all set to pay to send the bracelet back to her and have her put another one on. she actually sent me just the starfish at no cost, and explained the solder/pincer thing and said I should try to find a jeweller that could solder it on for me.
I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow. the one I have been wearing in its place is a lot clunkier, and I don't like it anymore. that one is similar to the silver Tiffany links. but the starfish one is delicate hammered silver loops and might weigh as much as a basic USPS 1st class mail envelope.

Since you saw it in daylight and, as far as I know, you aren't near a body of water, it was probably a large hawk or maybe a buzzard. Despite their sometimes huge size, even the largest hawks can't carry more than 3-5 pounds. Buzzards don't carry prey away; they ground feed on dead things. If you had seen it at night, a large owl would be a possibility, but even the biggest of those generally won't take anything over a couple of pounds. A hawk or owl will definitely take tiny puppies or kittens weighing under 1 or 2 pounds.

Newbie does her own thing, and because she is so well behaved, I just leave her be lol. She doesn’t always want to come outside, and I don’t make her. If I’m on the deck and she’s inside, standing at the door, I’ll open it so she can come out. If she’s ready to go back inside before I am, she’ll go stand at the door again, and I open it for her to go back inside. For several reasons, I swear she’s part cat lol. Boy doesn’t know how to act, so he usually has to go wherever I go, whether he wants to or not, just so I can keep an eye on him.

I even have a pic of him somewhere, taken through my former kitchen window. he's curled up on the patio with his tail curled around him, sitting up with his big Great Dane ears on point while he watches the wildlife. I posted it to FB when I took it, but I don't think I saved it to an album. I'll share if I can find it.

A hawk or owl will definitely take tiny puppies or kittens weighing under 1 or 2 pounds. I took Kiddo to a thing one time. We live in a coastal area surrounded by river systems that empty out into the ocean. Very diverse ecosystem because of that. Lots of outdoors and environmental things to do most of the time too. And I took Kiddo to one....since sometimes I do try to take her to things that aren't just the indoor inflatables/library/arcade. Anyways, this thing we were at, the people do a raptor display. It was under a pavilion so you could be as up close and personal with the birds of prey as you wanted to be. These particular birds were rehabilitation animals that can't be released into the wild so they use them for educational shows. The biggest one was the bald eagle. All the others were indeed much smaller. The expert raptor person doing the talk said they often hear about people worried about hawks and owls carrying off pets. They said a house cat weighs on the order of 8 - 10 lbs. We used to have two cats. One was 10lbs, the other was 12 lbs. Ok, so I'm in agreement with this so far. Because a lot of the bird's bones are hollow and the rest are extremely light, none of the birds actually weigh enough to snatch up a typical adult house pet. Even with their massive wing spans they aren't actually large birds. It was really cool to see the birds up close. But, if critters and birds aren't your thing, I can totally understand why they would freak you out even if they can't snatch up a house pet.

Yes they are stupid expensive. I thought about using walnuts, but ended buying the pine nuts. I only bought about a quarter cup. I'm using the basil I grew myself on the balcony and I want the pesto to be original and authentic.
I'm not even making it today because I have an avocado that must be used up, so I'll make avocado toast on sourdough, with garlic and chili flakes. I hope I don't break the yolk of the egg when frying it.

A hawk or owl will definitely take tiny puppies or kittens weighing under 1 or 2 pounds. It was not a buzzard, I know what they look like. We have a lot of huge (to me) birds in this area, but I can’t really tell one bird from another. Except I know what crows sound like, which creeps me out, but seeing them, I can’t tell if it’s a crow or a blackbird. And one or the other, or both, live in the trees around me. I also know what owls look like, I’ve seen one sitting on an neighbor’s roof, and there was the small one I posted about last year, that we saw on the cameras, in our driveway. When I sit on the deck, sometimes I get the honor of watching huge birds floating in the air currents. If they look huge even at that distance, I’m pretty sure they are huge for real. I have pictures of one resting on the raggedy fence on the back of our property one Christmas Day, and Mister shared with me video of one that was feasting on some prey in our backyard and unbothered when he drive his car closer to get a better look. They might not be big or strong enough to carry Boy away, but the one today was big enough that I would’ve run, thinking it could carry ME away. Several years ago, DD was driving on the interstate when a huge bird swooped down, I guess to get some prey it spotted. But it miscalculated and DD hit it with her car and got creeped out because she didn’t see it in her rear view mirrors as she kept driving. She got off the e-way at the next exit, to go to a friend’s house, and her fears were confirmed when people at intersections were staring at her car. When she got to her friend’s house, her fears were confirmed, the huge bird was trapped in the grill of her car. It was like 9am, and when her friend saw the problem, he said he had to go drink some beer lol. He told DD, you know these white folks are gonna hem you up for killing this big ass bird that’s probably a protected species, right? LOL! But he got it off her car, apparently it broke its neck when it got caught in the grill of her car, so it wasn’t a bloody mess. I have pictures, I’ll try to find them.

I used to break yolks all the time. a couple years ago, I bought a copper-coated ceramic pan that was amazing for exactly this. when I wrecked it burning some bacon in it, I replaced it with a Blue Diamond brand. link I picked mine up at Walmart, and it's better than the copper one was. this pan will never see bacon!

I used almonds, pistachios, walnuts and pecans in pesto. It all works. Pine nuts are hard to find here and when I do find them they are stupid expensive. I find I don't miss what I regularly don't taste so I don't even bother with trying to locate them anymore.Yes they are stupid expensive. I hope I don't break the yolk of the egg when frying it. what material is your fry pan? I used to break yolks all the time. a couple years ago, I bought a copper-coated ceramic pan that was amazing for exactly this. when I wrecked it burning some bacon in it, I replaced it with a Blue Diamond brand. link I picked mine up at Walmart, and it's better than the copper one was. this pan will never see bacon! I have so many frying pans, from copper to cast iron. I bought a small Teflon pan that I like to use just for eggs. DS is not allowed to use it when he cooks, as he always uses metal forks and will destroy the pan. When I break a yolk, it's because I'm clumsy and it's not the pan's fault.

That's a nice pan Chiver, and not expensive. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada. If I see one at Canadian Tire or Walmart, I'll pick t u[p.

I can't handle a half-cooked yolk . if I break one and it cooks solid before I can get it out of the pan, then I have to cook all of it the full way through. anyway, what I have done for years is to crack the egg into a bowl first, where I can check on my shitty egg-cracking skills before dropping it in the fry pan. if I break the yolk, I scramble it and set aside for breakfast burritos....or now, the pups get some eggs. so the only way I'm breaking a yolk <knocks wood> is b/c the pan isn't smooth anymore.
