DIL told me that, I had no reason to ask. But because she had been all mad and everything I guess son decided to share. I know he is good with money, so that surprised me and I guess it surprised him too, why the arguing I suppose. I don't know what he has saved anymore, he used to tell me, but I know he is ok. I know they don't owe anything except for the house. I'm just glad they got together and know what happened this month. I understand that because all of ours comes due in May. For the property, personal, and everything and I stress every year. I wish we had it spread out more but don't. So I sat down and looked at what I've spent for groceries since I've been here. I like to died, $856!! Holy crapola!! I couldn't believe it, so I messaged son to tell him I just got shocked too. Well, I will tackle that for sure, I can do better. There are probably some non grocery items in there from Walmart I would think, but that is crazy. Going to have to get that under control. I try to buy healthy foods. Grandson said grandma you need to get organic without chemicals, I didn't go into that with him other than to say they are pretty expensive, I would love to have everything organic. When I raise my garden, it is. I don't know how much higher food can go, but I think we will find out. Ok, drying my hair. DD had a mess awhile ago I had to deal with and grandson got to involved, I told him not to worry about it I will take care of it and please go to bed. Sometimes he gets a little to involved in things he doesn't need to. So I finally got him in bed while I dry my hair, I am really tired tonight and want to sleep, we are supposed to leave about 10 in the morning, but bet we don't. I worked outside to hard today. I told him he can spend the weekend with dad and mom, he doesn't want to, but I need a bit of a break. I'm apparently older than I think I am, LOL! I know that seems like a lot to you, but maybe you were kind of stocking up on basics, stuff like flour, sugar, dish soap etc. After all, you had to start from scratch at a new place. Non-food items like toilet paper and paper towels really add up quickly. You may not need to spend that much in the future.

Okay, so I had to go look at what we spend on groceries and eating out. Quicken tells me that YTD the groceries (which includes non-food items like cleaning supplies, toilet paper etc.) ran $2,900. That would be a much higher number if we hadn't spent $6,600 eating out. Several years ago we did a sit-down review of our spending and DH was shocked at the number for dining out, but he still wants to eat lunch out daily so there it is.
The electric bill came in today and, while high, $240, it's not excessive given that our temps have been high 90's or low 100's for the past month.

Right! I have been scrolling past all the books written here, but from the bits and pieces I've seen, I can't imagine a parent being so involved in an adult relationship. I don't insert myself in the girl's relationships. If asked for advice, I'll give it. For the most part I mind my business. They're adults and can figure it out. I also can't imagine taking large amounts of money from my parents as a grown ass woman. Granted I've taken small amounts here and there as a broke kid, but not thousands of dollars at a time. I would think I had failed as a parent if I had to give huge amounts of money to my adult son and was all involved in his relationship with his wife. Ick factor on this end Like you, if asked for advice I would give it. I raised an independent adult! In fact when my son got married I told son and DIL that I would NOT be doing their tax returns. I had no need to be up in their business. By same token they are not up in my business. But some just can’t give up control. I don't have kids. My relationship with my parents and money was not complicated. Don't ask, don't tell. They never knew what I had and I never knew what they had. Of course, when I graduated college and was moving up the ladder, they were happy when I got promotions but they didn't know the $$$ amount. When I bought my first car at 18, my dad had to co-sign. He told me I was never going to miss a payment and I didn't. I had no credit record and I needed a car to get to work. When I bought my first house, parents gave me money to buy a washer and dryer. No more gifts until their final years of life. They gave my sister and I each a gift of $5000. No strings attached, although mom wanted me to use it for a down payment on a car. That is what I ended up doing. I knew nothing of their finances until they moved here and asked me to take that over for them. They would write their checks but they wanted me to reconcile their bank accounts monthly and show them the statements. So I did. Of course, they could never have paid for most of a house because my family never had that kind of money. I never wanted my parents in my financial business and I don't think I ever would. I know if I was married, I would not want them in "our" financial business. That's between a couple. I'm much closer to DN1 and family than my sister is to her son. I know the house they just bought was a stretch (they told me that) but I don't know what they make or how much the house cost and I'm not asking. I was taken aback when NIL's mother asked me what it cost. None of her or my business.

Groceries are freaking stupid expensive still. I am tired of reading about "Inflation is down! Inflation is down!" while still paying a fortune at the store. At least now the farmer's market and farm stands are open so if I am paying for produce I am at least getting produce that doesn't rot 2 minutes after I get it home. A lot of is rotten sitting on the shelf! And that's every grocery store I've hit in town! I get it is due to weather conditions, continuing shipping issues and lack of people to pick produce but that doesn't make it any less infuriating when you see what they want for a box of strawberries and the entire damn pallet is moldy. I don't let myself look at what I have spent overall on groceries this year. As a human being I need food to survive so it is what it is. I do my best to keep it in check as much as possible but there is only so much I can do to combat the prices.

I don't think it's bad since it's been so hot. Plus mine is electric, water, and trash. I still hate paying it. I'd rather buy crap and go out with my friends.

Mechanics annoy me so much...not all obviously, but you never know who you're going to get. I don't know how many times my van was on its death bed according to the 60 point check at one visit for an oil change and miraculously cured the next time. Last summer I took the Fridge in for an oil change and rotate and they told me I needed to get my brakes done and even wrote up an estimate and asked if I wanted to schedule it. They were also marked in the red on the 60 point check. I declined because it was going to get parked for the winter anyhow so I figured I'd put it off. Today I took it back and TOLD them to do oil change, rotate and brakes front and rear and they just called me back and said they had the first two done, but it wasn't ready for new brakes. They were 6 in the front and 4 in the rear and they don't like to do them before they get down to 3. So, apparently during it's time off over the winter it was able to build it's brake pads up some.

We pay separately for water and sewer which runs about another $250 in the summer. We should catch a break on the next water bill because it did rain a couple of times

Yes, I am pretty damn glad we gifted DS the downpayment on his duplex and he closed the loan before interest rates went sky high. My DS is pretty independent, he is not living his life looking for snowflake money to make his budget work. I did his taxes for years, but he and his GF managed to get it filed this year without me. I am an accountant, doing taxes is not a hardship and the tax program allows you to do multiple returns. My DS (also an accountant) still does her 40-year-old son's taxes. He is a teacher and his wife does sales. They are very successful. They certainly could do it themselves or take it to someone else. I don't think my sister has ever helped her son out financially - she just does not have the $$ to do that. Doing his taxes is a little something she can do for him. and I have to read back and see if I can find the house MPL is interested in. I have been busy the last week or so.

Well I learned something new tonight. Our 70'ish year old "community leader" wannabe posted a comment on social media with the acronym "PLGB crowd". I was all and then another resident posted the definition from the Urban Dictionary, which I won't share here. This "community leader" has also been doing the cougar thing on social media over a local guy, 20-30, who posts creepy photos and videos, telling him how handsome he is

That's my air conditioner. I've been living in the house since 2006 and every other year someone swears that it is going to die and I need to replace it immediately. The last one was back in July of last year when we had to replace the freon. Supposedly it wasn't even going to run this summer according to the guy that replaced our freon. It's still going strong. It will need replaced eventually but I agree with the older guy who put a new motor in for us. Keep it going until either it literally falls apart or we can no longer get parts. It's an energy sucking monster but it is God knows how old and still kicking. Newer models are designed to be obsolete in 5-7 years. I'm not paying that much money for something I'll have to replace in less than a decade until I absolutely have to.

Last month was hot and my electric was $185. In months when I'm not using AC or furnace it might run $110.

TD has been on a clearing out binge, and pulled down a box we had stored of my shoes. I cried. This box was shoes I wore while still working and when I came out here, I wore slippers and sneakers for a year. I had shoes that I bought that were brand new…..never worn……that were a full size smaller than I now wear. Also, my PhD research got tossed. If they are not gone already you could open a Posmark account and list them. DSis lists stuff there and she told me Poshmark pays the postage. I still have been taking my stuff to Goodwill...but then I read the other day about people stalking Goodwill, buying stuff cheap, then reselling it and I asked myself why I don't just sell it myself. The answer is my house is over cluttered and I just don't have time to list stuff and run it to the post office. Que sera sera.

Pink- you made a post about boy that I meant to respond to and I can't find it. Years ago, I was the one who got serious about dog training and put in the work. Dh said he wanted to also, but wasn't willing to do the work at home, or even support the work I was when it was "hard". It didn't take too long for the dogs to realize different rules for different people. They didn't listen to dh at all until he got on board but that didn't stop them from listening to me. Before dh realized he wasn't going to just get to piggy back on my work, we had friends over and he asked my dog to sit and instead she barked at him. I was across the house, told her to sit and she did immediately, cementing who was boss. That dog would also listen for my key in the door. After I left she'd get in bed and jump back out if I forgot something. Anyway tl:Dr Mister doesn’t have to be on board. Boy can still learn that you mean business. How old is he? He’ll be a year old in a few days. I will keep working with him, I just wish he didn’t get on my nerves so much sometimes.

Pretty sure that's about the age devil dog earned his name. 8mos-2years I didn't like him a lot of days. I'm still pissed that dh pushed so hard for such a big high energy dog and he's done so little with - and that I knew this would happen and I agreed to it anyway. But...after 2 devil dog got so much better. I have been a slacker though and need to work with him more though.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table with her and her stacks of files (everything was paper back then) the TV on in the corner, my grumpy uncle complaining that I was always there eating all their food. Really fond memories of those days honestly. This is the house.

Is there still time to make him dig through the trash to find it? I would be real salty about that one. I have mixed feelings about my PhD research. I was really on board about my original project, until I realized the data I received from KY Medicaid was garbage. It took me culling down massive spreadsheets to determine that there were 5 million children using dental Medicaid when (at the time) the total population of KY was 5 million. My boss was also using the same data set for a different purpose and had found something similar, about the same time. I had to pivot on that project, because it took us months to receive that data from KY, and I couldn’t be guaranteed that I’d receive equivalent garbage again. The shoes really hurt though. And all of my nieces wear the same size I now do!

We get our heating and cooling system serviced twice a year before each season the applicable system is needed. We spent $10k in 2017 on a new furnace, AC, and ductwork, so damn right I am keeping my investment in top shape! It's also included in our plumber's service plan, so we kind of make out in the deal. We have a 112-year-old house and we have a plumber over once a year to do something, it seems.

We use a small local shop for stuff like that. Love the guy, but the last time I picked my car up he said he and his wife were seriously considering selling everything and moving due to crackheads nearby. He is probably mid 60s, and he and his son are the only people working there (though his wife handles most of the financials). I always thought son would take over, but he has some developmental issues and would need help with the business side of things. I was hoping that would be my be next position if I retired at 55, as it would not be a whole lot of work and rewarding, because he is an awesome guy. Pretty sure he is close in age to DH (44).

My first prime order is 1 stop away. I'm sure the mail workers are going to hate their lives for the rest of the week. There is a big Amazon distribution warehouse in our city 2 exits before my work exit. Traffic was backed up on the exit way more than normal. Guessing they are all working today.

I've never had annual service on it either. The one time it was just the fan needed oiled but DH freaked out. $195 to be told the fan needed and have to listen to a $10k upsell. I was PISSED. Next time the fan froze up I didn't even tell DH. Dad and I took it apart, squirted in some WD-40 and used a stick to push the blades till it started moving on it's own. It just seems that most of what they do is see if something is getting worn out or going to fail (or they THINK it's wore out and going to fail) and replacing it preemptively, where as I'm kind of the, "I'll fix it when and if it breaks" type, after all $200/year for service over the 24 years is $4800 I could just apply to a new furnace. But, I also have back up heat sources, so I can wait for a week for a repair in January.

Everyone gets their money's worth somehow. It's less than $200/year for peace of mind and avoiding a costly repair when it's most needed.

My aunt was an accountant and she did all her kids/grandkids taxes including for multiple businesses they had. She was also the one that taught me to do mine when I was a teen. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with her and her stacks of files (everything was paper back then) the TV on in the corner, my grumpy uncle complaining that I was always there eating all their food. Really fond memories of those days honestly. This is the house. The house is gorgeous, no doubt. But going from what you have to a little over a quarter of an acre? If intended to live in during retirement it is still a lot of house to keep clean.

Gave up on sheets for twin x long for a guest room Put in cotton but keep getting microfiber. Trying to replace microfiber sets I am not a fan of microfiber sheets either. It is getting difficult to find anything else. I went through two sets which were torn near where I apperntly move my feet a lot at night. Did some research and the microfibers are just random fibers put together, which makes the sheets soft but easy to wear out. No more for me. Of course now I can say I “ Tore up the sheets”😜
