My neighbor's workout mix is good today (my desk is against our shared wall). Madonna followed by U2, I wonder what's next!

Or they'll lower the age where you can legally work. Nothing like teaching tweens good ole American work ethic. Can't have them becoming lazy no good liberals. We are down to 14 in Iowa. That is their solution to the labor problem in the state. what was it before? b/c I worked in a grocery store at age 14 - in solid blue liberal MA. my sister was working even younger, but that was b/c my parents owned the coffee shop. labor laws didn't apply to family business. I believe it was 15 and there are restrictions like you can't work them past 7 pm on a school night and stuff like that. They lowered the age and waived all those regulations. This is being marketed as a way to open doors to young people who want to get to work and earn a good day's wage. Uh huh. Labor laws here don't apply to family farms. Family business is more tricky. I learned for instance that Gwen could currently operate a combine on a family farm BUT she is considered too young to operate the POS system at my dad's business. After awhile I was wondering when were the labor laws in Iowa and Nebraska last reviewed 1810 ?

I think i'm really losing it in a bad way. Yes. I told DH.
In my nice adulty words. That doesn't fix anything though. DH and his "take a deep breath" You think I haven't? You think that will fix my work situation, finding a new job, convincing DS that he needs employment, even if it's not a mechanics job, my mom? My house is a huge mess. The girls can't have friends over like they asked because of me. I hate being displaced.
Jesus. If deep breathing is all it would take to fix..I'd be a porn star in a hot minute. I need this fixed.
Ugh. I finally had to warn DH that unless he wanted it to be his last breath stop with the trite advice. You need to do more than a drive by of CB. Come down here and stay we can have drinks together.

CG, "illegals" is not racist. The term comes from people entering this country illegally, which occurs by the thousands every day, as we see on the news daily. It's not a redneck term, but a nationwide term. I will disagree. It is racist, whether it's used on the news or not. Here when a Hispanic person might be involved in anything, people start carrying on about they are illegal before they even know the immigration status or if the person was born in the US. Here in Iowa, we are quite will to employ undocumented kids 14 and over in our packing plants and not bat an eye. That is also racist.

The new law, that went into effect the minute it was signed, does not protect kids working 8 hours a day in meat processing plants. They are allowed to do any task.
Many are too tired after doing manual labor all night to go to school.
Most parents of white kids won't let their kids work these jobs. Some people have choices and others do not.
It reminds me of taking bets on how many of the "illegals" would drop from Covid today.

JBS got busted in Nebraska for having 10 year olds working on the kill floor. 10 YEAR OLDS. And of course they were all the children of undocumented immigrants. How does a 10 year old get a job at JBS? Someone up high has to be looking the other way. Remember who greases the palms of our politicians people. You want change corporations like JBS need to be held accountable. But we won't because nobody wants to do those jobs (and I don't blame them) but someone has to. So barely veiled slavery it is.

IMHO, any term used for people that denigrates their status as individuals worthy of respect, and places them in a group based on externals such as skin color, ethnic background, or documentation status, is offensive.
For years people have used various terms to slur others. There was a time when the N word was common, as were equally sick terms for immigrants of Irish, Italian or Asian origin. As for those with physical or mental challenges, anyone here remember "short-bus kid, retard, crip" and such?
Yes, I recognize that certain geographic areas or groups of people continue these practices but the excuse that "everyone around me uses those terms" falls flat for me. It's not a question of "what I'm supposed to say"; it's a question of being a decent human being

I am not going to come out in defense of "illegals" if only that the grammarian in me rejects the notion that people are adjectives. It reminds me of the young adult series, which I haven't read, about the Pretties and the Uglies or something like that.
And "illegal alien" makes me think of extra-terrestrial beings. However, "undocumented" is one of the worst examples of doublespeak I have seen in a while.
They are "illegal workers." Why they are working illegally isn't the issue. They could be teens without the proper work permit and I would still classify them as working illegally.

I guess I didn't realize that, so what is the correct term? We have tons of people here come in that works the melon crops, I assume they are guest workers but don't know. Wish there still was a guest worker program but think that was when Reagan was president Term that’s politically correct is undocumented . People can do illegal actions but they aren’t themselves ‘ illegal’ How is illegal racist? Maybe it applied in the past People coming over US border are not just from Mexico and South America - Hispanic . Maybe that’s majority but now from all over - Russia, mid East, China etc It's used by racist people to describe undocumented people of Hispanic descent. Racist people never complain about white people who are undocumented. It's always brown people. It's just as offensive as calling a black person colored or calling an Asian person oriental. Just don't do it. People are not illegal, they are human. They are just as valuable as you and I.

And then they will start complaining that nobody wants to work construction jobs there when the workers move out of state or find another line of work. Or they'll lower the age where you can legally work. Nothing like teaching tweens good ole American work ethic. Can't have them becoming lazy no good liberals. We are down to 14 in Iowa. As a POC that has experienced plenty of racism I can tell you that I have been assumed to be illegal before. I was born in KS. My parents were born here and 3/4 of my grandparents were born here. Because I have tattoos I must be in a gang. And if I had a nickel for every time a white person asked me if I speak English, I'd have a whole bag of nickels. I had a lady in a produce department of a grocery store tell me that I look like I know how to pick a good avocado. Why? Because I'm brown? I get followed around in department stores because I must be trying to steal. My sister is white passing and doesn't have people treat her that way. Because my skin is darker than hers, I'm the one that gets treated like a criminal

Oh but those people aren't racist they just want to protect our country and our jobs! You "know" who they are because you are judging by skin color and accent. That's racism you fucking idiots.

And the reason why I am so nervous about closing . . .
We were supposed to close at 9 am on Friday, July 7. But now my buyer can't close until late afternoon so closing has been changed to 4 pm on selling and 4:30 pm on buying. That means that I cannot have the water/sewer switched into my name until Monday, and then there is a one-day delay.
I don't have an agent for the sale, but there are two agents involved in my purchase. The seller of that house's agent reminded me that my purchase was contingent on closing the sale of my house so my buyer gets to call the shots. He is asking his seller, though, not to have the water/sewer disconnected until Monday. That only sort of helps because it will still be sometime Tuesday (Moving Day) when I get water after it is disconnected on Monday.
I don't know if I can make it through this week. Truly.

However, "undocumented" is one of the worst examples of doublespeak I have seen in a while. They are " illegal workers." Why they are working illegally isn't the issue. They could be teens without the proper work permit and I would still classify them as working illegally. What about the disabled? To me, it's the same thing. That's why there is the push even amongst professionals who deal with the disabled population to use person-first language, e.g., my student who has autism vs. my autistic student. news.northeastern.edu/2018/07/12/unpacking-the-debate-over-person-first-vs-identity-first-language-in-the-autism-community/#:~:text=For%20people%20who%20prefer%20identity,disorder%20doesn't%20define%20them. "Illegal workers" does not capture the full range of people who are undocumented. Not everyone is working. People who are working illegally is not restricted to those who are undocumented. Teens without the proper permit, people who work "under the table," etc. Put it in person-first language, people who are working illegally. When referring to a group, "the disabled" or "disabled population" works for me. Similarly, "the undocumented" or "undocumented population." We are constantly learning and trying to do better. There was a poster on the boards here, long gone now, who had a son with dwarfism. She once described a situation where someone was "acting like a retard." That is also a word we should be shedding from our vocabulary. Even person-first doesn't get you past the finish line on that one.

But at least they are legal poor we are exploiting now. Yet those same posters don't seem to be rushing to quit their jobs and go on the dole. If life on hte dole is so dang wonderful why aren't they joining the crowd ?

Hugs Gira. I hope things resolve themselves soon. The job thing is beyond frustrating.
Last day of work before vacation. I think I'm in pretty good shape work wise. Laundry is done. I need to go to the bank and deposit a check received for grandma.

If life on hte dole is so dang wonderful why aren't they joining the crowd ? My personal favorite is those who constantly demand cheaper prices when they go WalMarting so they can add a few more pennies to their 7-figure net worth, while not realizing that those cheaper prices result in part from exploitation of minority workers, documented and otherwise, both here and abroad. They don't care as long as they can get their clothing and food cheap enough.

Home from the doctor. My 15 minute appointment took 45 minutes, so she is late with her other appointments this morning. ha Got two referrals. She says the hypothyroidism causes such havoc with the body, that it probably is causing the muscle weakness and fatigue. She thinks as the prescription gets in my body, that will improve.
She doesn't seem concerned about two Superficial thrombophlebitis has happened twice. Said she will be concerned if it happens again after the change in meds start affecting my body.
I know I am ready for a long nap.

He is asking his seller, though, not to have the water/sewer disconnected until Monday. That only sort of helps because it will still be sometime Tuesday (Moving Day) when I get water after it is disconnected on Monday. I don't know if I can make it through this week. Truly. I don't know that you need an agent for your sale, but I would have an attorney going over the paperwork and running interference. Attorney should also be involved in the purchase.

It's not a question of "what I'm supposed to say"; it's a question of being a decent human being Yikes! So using terms for groups describing externals such as skin color, ethnicity are offensive? Do you mean using terms like Blacks, Hispanics and whites are offensive? We might be much better not using these terms cause they’re causing or continuing or exacerbating problems? br]Get it certainly that there are REALLY offensive terms for most people in the US either now or used in the past - such as Mick for Irish (my ancestors), retarded for my dear sister, or much worse for other groups

Yes, Mick and retard are offensive to me. I am entitled to my opinion as are you to yours.
