Grocery prices here are still skyrocketing. Yesterday, I refused to pay $5.79 for a pack of Thomas english muffins and went with the $2.99 store brand. The Thomas go on sale regularly for B1G1, and sometimes B1G2. ETA - Regular price was around $4.29.
I rarely eat them unless making mini pizzas, but DH eats 1 every morning. He has never really said anything when I have substituted before.
I do remember the store brand regular price being $1.99 within the last 2 years.

What I would give for rain. Doesn't look like a chance till the 11th. My lawn is turning brown and crops are going to suffer.

After our trip I'm going to schedule a day to go to Verizon, get my IPad activated (yes, I bought it over a year ago), maybe get a new IPhone 14 and see if there's anything I can cut from our plan. DH is happy with his phone and IPad so they can stay as is for now.
Our cable bill is pretty high (ATT) but DH rents a lot of PPV movies and it's worth it for him to enjoy those.

something tells me that might make it worse. hugs, Pink. you have the patience of a saint lately. 💗 Thanks! I don’t really care if it makes it worse, he’s going to lie and tell everybody we are mistreating him anyway. Also, I’m not willing to let another adult come in and disrupt my household, and I just suffer in silence while they go about their merry way wreaking havoc in my home. It’s not the same as when I was trying to tread carefully when we were having issues with Mister’s daughters. It is different. Can you refresh my memory as to when Mister's mom went into the hospital and when she passed? I do not want this to ruin your entire summer.

Given just how widespread palm oil has become, which countries produce it? Data from the United States Department of Agriculture shows that nearly 85 percent of palm oil production occurs in just two countries, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Yes, and thats where they're clearcutting the rainforests and killing the orangutans.

I’m not going to tell Mister it’s his Dad or me. I don’t feel like that would be right. He’s eventually going to get fed up himself anyway, just like he did before his Dad went to stay with Baby Sister. And maybe I have empathy for Mister because I went through a bunch of shit with my own Mom that was similar in some ways, so I understand how difficult it is, and I wasn’t grieving the death of my other parent at the same time. Anyway, I left the question I was trying to ask yesterday alone because I felt like either I wasn’t being clear, or I was missing something in the replies. So I’m going to try again. I wasn’t asking if Mister could go out and hire and attorney and use his Dad’s money to pay for it. I was asking if a surviving spouse can hire an attorney to assist with settling the deceased spouse’s estate, using some of the money they received from life insurance on the deceased spouse. The surviving spouse speaks to the attorney and signs whatever necessary documents themself, and makes the payment transaction(s) themself. I know this particular situation has other pertinent details, but that was my question. Idk if Dad’s money is still considered Mom’s money too, as far as whatever bills she left that need to be paid, or whatever, and whether there is some legal reason or other reason it’s a bad idea for HIM to use some of the life insurance money for that. I’m pretty sure he would agree to get an attorney for that. If for no other reason than the insurance settlement from their car accident is tied up now until the probate process is done or whatever. Which is ultimately more money for him. Pink I think you asking the wrong questions. Mister's Dad is not competent. Full stop. What he could do should be irrelevant. If you want to guide Mister I would repeatedly in different ways suggest there needs to be a plan for the estate if Mister is the executor or plans made on what to do when it all goes to heck. Because he's already careening down the tracks flinging crap in his path. Its only a matter of time when he destroys all he can. Its not an if question but a when. I'm not you, but I'd try to get Mister to focus on that instead of surviving the daily problems of his dad. I will say in RL there is a customer who we will not be able to save from herself. She likes to do nice things, but instead gets scammed for small money as if you donate to any idiot who calls you mentioning a police organization or similar organizations. A man called more than once trying to setup online access to drain her accounts. And right now, I am being reminded of when my mom started going south with her driving and being unsafe for others. Its hard to listen/watch someone repeatedly come up with a story that I do not even need to know. And given my car situation it is hard to listen to a rich person plan to buy a new car than merely fix a most fixable vehicle. I think scamming is going on in that regard but she's is probably emotionally culpable. My mom did not want to acknowledge the traffic accident was her fault and she needed to stop driving. She really fought it. Thankfully she was not rich and functional enough to go off and buy another car for some shady person or place. There is more train wreck watching in my future. It was an exhausting week. I had another customer vault off the deep end as I decided to ask her more questions about a transaction as the computer program hung at the beginning of the transaction. It was very bad. I shutdown everything I could think of and seemed to help not at all. Was annoying as well. As if when I start a transaction, the computer knows right away who the heck you are. As if knowing you are a longtime customer somehow makes the computer not seize up. Well, I asked the question I wanted an answer to. I believe I also said that I know there are other details regarding this particular situation. The thing is, her estate or whatever the proper term is, needs to be handled, and Mister doesn’t know what he’s doing, so it’s best to get an attorney. She didn’t have a will, Dad was just the beneficiary on her life insurance policies. The money she had in bank accounts is tied up because she died. Dad was not on any of her accounts, Mister was on one, but for whatever reason the money in that account is not accessible either. After all the tens of thousands of dollars Mister has spent since last fall, he understandably does not want to spend thousands more on an attorney for something that is his Dad’s responsibility, especially if his Dad has the money to pay for it himself. Mister really doesn’t want to spend money on anything right now, unless he absolutely has to, because his available cash is less than what he’s comfortable with and he has a house that’s been somewhat of a money pit so far, plus 2 children he’s helping pay for college, and another minor child that might need whatever at any time. Mister’s own responsibilities are his priorities before anything outside of his household, including his Dad. At this point, we can not prove that his Dad is incompetent even though something is clearly not right. Being gossipy and a liar does not mean he’s incompetent. Making bad financial decisions does not mean he’s incompetent, he’s been doing that for decades. A couple of Doctors have said he might have dementia, but he “passed” all the tests for dementia at the neurologist. The MRI showed something going on with his brain, but the follow up appointment, Mister had to reschedule because Dad was still in another state with Baby Sister. Which was originally only supposed to have been for a couple of weeks. But whatever the MRI results mean, will it mean he’s deemed incompetent in a way that matters legally? Idk. I understand all of this would probably be easier if Mister had POA, but who’s going to pay for that? Mister doesn’t want to pay for that either. He is not willing to spend anymore money for anything regarding his Dad right now.

Potatoes are close to prices pre pandemic. However, most potato chips that are not the store brand remain outrageously expensive. Like $5.49 for a 8 oz bag of potato chips and the store brand is 1.99 regular price for the normal chips and $2.29 for the kettle style chips. People still buy them so its not like its an old stock issue. They are probably selling less but still making more profit because of profit margins. There are some deals here and there for those doing BBQs and whatnot, but as a single person I do not want to buy three bags of chips so each bag is cheaper nor buy some family size bag just for me. TJoes prices were still up when my car was last driveable, but they also are generally under $4, $5 or even $6 a bag. French fry and tater tot prices are still elevated too.

Yes, and thats where they're clearcutting the rainforests and killing the orangutans. Gotcha. Honestly I do not think not using palm oil on my part will change a thing. Rainforests have been clear cut for chocolate beans, grazing lands for beef cattle, and now this.

Came home for a couple weeks at the end of September at Dad’s insistence, instead of going to rehab where she should’ve gone. Back in the hospital in October, and was there until she died in February.

Potatos are about $6 for 10 pounds, and it's too much. It's double what it was. Corn on the cob in one dollar EACH...so $12 a dozen. Nope! Used to be $3. I've never seen a tater tot in my life.

That story was totally awesome, countrygirl2 . Both of the dogs were staring at me as I was laughing out loud. Mapquest let me down once again. Fortunately, I have a map app on my cell phone, but my stupid phone screen kept shutting down as I was trying to find my way. I finally reached my destination, but I won't be driving anywhere new without my Garmin in the future. (I went to check out a nice-looking house for sale, about 10 miles or so from where I live now.) Was the house worth fighting to get there? Abso-freakin-lutely! It's a house on a hill, with a great view of a lake. It'd be a bit spendy, but it's SO tempting... I might get thrown out of YM if I put a bid on it. I DID mention the house to DD, since she & the guy she's been dating are beginning to talk marriage. If I can't get the house myself, it'd be awesome for family to own.

Yes, and thats where they're clearcutting the rainforests and killing the orangutans. And countries with corrupt autocratic leaders often are far more motivated by the funds they receive from corporate producers than any ecological or animal welfare concern. Look at what's happening across Africa where the Wagner Group pillages a country's resources at the behest of its dictator.

Oh, and Opti, the house is right on a walking trail that allows dogs, as long as they're on a leash. If I got this house, you'd probably want to visit.

Groceries is an area where we all feel costs differently, depending on our diet. We purchase 1, or at most, 2 small potatoes at a time, maybe every 6 weeks. We don't eat corn on the cob. We don't buy frozen potatoes. But, for us, mangoes going from $0.49 to $0.89 is a big deal as we love them. Beef goes up, oh well. Seafood goes up, we're crying.

Good grief! When Mister knocked on his Aunt’s door, she started yelling and screaming and crying. He called his brother to see if they had keys to her house, Brother brought the keys, Aunt had tripped over something and fell again, and couldn’t get up. Idk when she fell, how long she’s been laying there. So back to the hospital she goes. She already doesn’t walk right, and she keeps tripping over stuff because her house is a disaster with crap all over everywhere, including the floor. There’s literally nowhere to sit in the part of her house I’ve seen, and it looks like she just drops stuff on the floor and leaves it there. Mail, clothes, trash, whatever. I was shocked when I saw it because she seems so prissy. I was surprised she even let me inside. It was awful. Mister has a strong back, but I’m not sure how much more he can take.

He is not willing to spend anymore money for anything regarding his Dad right now. I do not have much experience with this, but her dying without a will means the rules vary by state. In the state that my parents live in it means that there is not technically an estate to settle - the surviving spouse inherits everything and is responsible for closing accounts. In the state I live in it is much more complicated if someone dies without a will. I would have to petition the court to be named executor in order to move and close accounts, one of the main reasons that while DH maintain some separate accounts we are both still listed on those accounts. I would suggest that Mister's Dad pay and meet with an attorney to determine the requirements in that state. And yes, that should come from the life insurance money.

Departing this rabbit hole Welts, but if you like here's two things I really should not have read and stuck with getting my world in order. www.eco-business.com/news/indonesia-malaysia-cry-discrimination-in-lobbying-against-eu-palm-oil-restrictions/Top officials from Indonesia and Malaysia, the world’s biggest palm oil producers, will meet European Union policymakers in Brussels amid a diplomatic standoff over a new deforestation rule that threatens to shut the commodity out of the EU market. The rule, formally adopted by the EU on May 16, bans the trading within the bloc of products and commodities linked to deforestation and forest degradation, in an effort to protect forests globally. To be able to enter the EU market, producers would have to provide “verifiable” information that their commodities were not grown on land that was deforested after 2020.The governments of Indonesia and Malaysia, which together account for about 85 per cent of global palm oil exports, have criticised the regulation, calling it discriminatory against palm oil since its requirements are too strict for producers, particularly smallholders, to follow.Read something else, I guess I closed the link. But basically the high point of deforestation was 2012 according to whatever URL. In Addition, there was a legal hold on new "permits" for palm oil plantations but the govt did not renew in 2021. Politically the area is varied with lots of little tribes, so it may take them a bit to figure it out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia

Some things are still outrageous and I think its more because they want to over charge versus needing to do so for profitability. Potatos are about $6 for 10 pounds, and it's too much. It's double what it was. Corn on the cob in one dollar EACH...so $12 a dozen. Nope! Used to be $3. I've never seen a tater tot in my life. 10 pounds of potatoes here are almost $8. I scored a 10 pound bag on a produce clearance rack for $3 last week - the one time DH happened to be with me. He said we have potatoes. Yeah, but at that price even if we don't get to eat them fresh I can prepare them a couple of different ways and freeze them.

Looks nice. If you buy it, I may want to come to visit. Anything like that would be much more in NJ even in the more rural areas.

I'm so sorry for the lady and even more for you and Mister.
