My ex would be comfortable with being handed a million dollars which is what he could end up with if I died tomorrow and he was the one "handling" Carrot's take. Not wanting him in charge of the money is really the only thing I care about enough to actually get a will. I'd rather he didn't get custody either, but that wouldn't happen. How did you pick a trustee? I can't think of anyone besides my parents and aunts and uncles that I could trust with that kind of money. I love my siblings, but I don't think any of them are very well off financially. Not that I think they would ever intentionally mismanage funds, but I think it could be a source of stress for them.
Can you just have a law firm do it?
A bank's TRUST DEPT. would be a good choice in your case. Of course, they would charge a fee for this service, but at least you'd know they are insured and your wishes would be carried out. What does a bank do with all your investments? Do they stay invested or do they get put in some awful bank CD or something?

Around here, it depends on the type of investments minnesotapaintlady. If they are sound, money making ones, they leave them as is. Others (low interest paying or not well known companies) are transferred into better ones. A couple banks here have their own brokerage departments and will invest some in their own bank stock. Has generally worked out great for lots of people. Never heard of a bank here just purchasing CD's. They base their fee on the value of the account and the more they make for the trust account, the more they earn in turn.
If interested, make an appointment with a trust officer to answer any questions. Doesn't cost anything for that and generally they will not pressure you to use them.
Hope this helps a little

Grief, death, loss does strange things to people. Of course I will be dead, so the likelihood that I'll give a shit about what happens in the aftermath is 0.
But, I would like to spare others from potentially having a poor experience while they are also grieving me. Given my kids' reaction when I told them I had cancer, I'm going to make the assumption that my death will not be a walk in the woods for them to process and deal with.
Yes grief and loss does do strange things to people. I do keep telling my nephews that if they don't do what I want for a funeral, I will haunt them for the rest of their lives. I'm glad both parents had pre-planned their funerals. Dad's was much more detailed than mom's. We mostly had to pick dates and put names in to the obituary. We don't want to lose you either giramomma but I know it would be a million times worse for your kids and husband.

I'm surprised nobody started this thread yet. Though, reading in the "What are you doing right now?" thread I see plenty of peeps are stressed out about the holidays, so that may be the reason. Im working on my goals for 2022. It's not finished yet. I like goals because I see them as a way to improve. I don't take them as imperative, more like a suggestion. I hope I can post my goals tonight or tomorrow. Looking forward to everyone's posts. I think I usually start one of these up, as I so love new years resolutions. Just...... not feeling it this year? I'll try to muster up something....

Since we are moving in a month, I will be taking some time off of work until we figure out how long we will be living there. We just have to try it out and get a more realistic idea of what we are going to do long term. In the meantime: 1. Lose 10 stinking pounds. -Change my food habits. I head to junk food when I am under stress or feeling miserable but I know better. 2. Learn something new professionally. -Finish online data analysis certificate program. 3. Make my savings last since we will be overseas and I will be jobless for some time. Mind sharing what your certificate program is? I've been looking at coding bootcamps which opened up all kinds of rabbit trails of programs.

Our trust is set up not only to take care of the money while our kids are underage, but it also spaces out the distributions as we didn't want to hand them $1-2M at age 18. Our trustee has a lot of leeway though as we trust his judgment. The potential guardians weren't comfortable dealing with that amount of money though. If I had minor children, my concern would be with dad finding a new partner who might be very interested in all that money and find a way to get their hands on it. It would be worth it to me to pay the bank to manage it.

There are a number of things we need to accomplish in 2022. DH & I need to get our wills done, as we've postponed it long enough. It sounds funny, but we couldn't think of any relative that we truly trusted to oversee DS's needs, but now that DD is an adult, she can do that job.
We need to continue the work on the house. We must complete the work on the basement. But first, of course, we need to continue to get rid of things.
I plan to continue with my weight loss, and with getting more toned. I'm not setting a specific weight, just looking to improve. That should be enough to keep me busy during the year, besides ducking Covid.

Just stay the course: keep my job, everyone stay healthy and sane. For bonus points: DD1 gets residency with or near DSIL and I lose the 20lbs I gained over the 1st year of covid.

I will be getting all the filters applied to the listings on my website and get the Marketplace part up and running. That latter part isn't really in my control--it's on my website designer--but it's been being worked on since this summer so I'm crossing my fingers that my "classifieds meets ebaby" type of market platform is up and running so that my target market has a less expensive place to sell their New, EUC, and GUC bras.

I would never wish that you come down with something. It was nice for DH and I to quietly take 3 minutes on our own to know how much I'm worth if I die, and then move on because everything else was taken care of...wills, etc. Trying to sort out wills, ontop of everything else would have driven me over the edge. I can't imagine trying to get a will done at any point in treatment, or on the heals of my dad passing away. Plus there are two of us to divide and conquer.
But what exactly do I need a will for? I really don't understand. If I die, Carrot goes to his dad. Not necessarily something I would be thrilled with, but it's what would happen anyhow (which is why I can't die yet).
Who gets my stuff? All the accounts and life insurance have the kids listed as beneficiaries or POD. Carrot is an issue as he's a minor, so I guess who guards his money until he's of age so his dad doesn't get that too, but that would be more of a trust thing.
I got a will so that my stuff goes to whom I specifically want it to. It also set up an executor and established a Trust for my youngest niece since she's 20 years younger than her siblings and they're the ones who will "profit" off my death. Going through the process helped me discover that, in Indiana, you can't have a felon as your executor so I had to change that from the preferred family member to a different one. So, in one fell swoop with a lawyer, I got a Will, a Living Will, and an Estate Plan.

I just realized I never changed my 401K allocations for 2022 yet and at this point it's highly doubtful my changes will go in effect before next week's check. Which mean next week's check will be almost nothing. I had maxed out my regular 401K back in October so changed my "Catch-Up" contribution from 0 to 15% so I would keep getting the match for the rest of the year. Come January, the regular will kick back in...at 50%...along with the 15% catch up. Ouch! I might net a couple hundred...

Other goal is to see the Toddler as many times as possible.

As long as I get it in before Monday morning, it shouldn't be a problem. As a work benefit this year, I enrolled in legal coverage meaning to do a will. Well, that didn't happen--oops! I'm good with my state's defaults anyway.

I need to spend some time thinking about this . . . basically, I need to break some bad habits and develop more good habits.
So much to work on, I need to decide where to start.

We initiate the change on the Prudential website, then however long it takes them to contact payroll to make the changes. Since payroll has to be submitted on Tuesday (and we're off Monday), it would be a miracle. Oh well.

We have one guy who changes his 457 allocation every fucking paycheck.

Found my 2021 goals from the old thread (and for anyone else who wants to look theirs up, it's here: ymam.proboards.com/thread/64322/new-years-resolutions?page=1Family:
500 hours outside - who knows, I stopped tracking; I do know that we were more intentional about being outside more, which was really the goal Visit all of our city’s parks - nope, will probably try this again for 2022 Read to kids 325 days (or more) - stopped tracking, but I'm pretty sure I hit this; I averaged somewhere around 5000 pages read to the kid(s) (most the youngest, but sometimes the oldest listened in; he prefers to read on his own at this point) Vacation/explore someplace new - done! Home:
Finish the basement - lololol; DH is still working on this as I type, but should be done in 2022 Plant a vegetable garden - nope, but I did plant tomatoes again, so I'll take that Replace rug - nope Paint M’s room - nope Purge at least 500 items - not sure; I stink at counting decluttering items Financial:
Max 401k accounts and Roth IRAs for DH and me - done! Find kids’ 529 accounts to amount we get a state income tax deduction for - done! Set up wills/trust - failed Don’t screw up 2021 taxes (they will significantly change for me in 2021 once I purchase shares in my employer’s S-Corp, so I will have to use a CPA for the first time) - think I'm okay here Increase our charitable giving - haven't added this up yet, but not sure we made it Personal:
Read at least 36 books - done! (final number was 41) Increase average number of steps per day over 2020 - need to check this still Send at least 40 letters of appreciation to people who have positively impacted my life by my 40th birthday this summer - done! this was seriously one of the coolest things I did in 2021, and I'm so glad I made it happen; I sent handwritten letters for my 40th birthday to 40 women who have positively impacted my life - it was family members (mom, sister, aunt, cousin), people I volunteer with through my professional society, friends, and female coworkers and leaders at work

I DO have a couple of goals- one major and one minor.
There are way too many moving parts in my UBS brokerage account. $25,000 in this, $30,000 in that- the IRA has 17 different investments in it. At least I can simplify that without any tax consequences. Good day to do some research.
The minor one: I have to confess I am a freeloader. I'm not stealing my neighbor's Wi-Fi, using a family member's streaming services ID or anything else where I'm evading fees I should be paying, but I've never given a dime to Wikipedia, I use the freebie versions of workout videos and always opt for the free podcasts with commercial messages. I really need to actually support a few of these entities this year.

It was interesting to see that my objective for last year was to get out more "when Covid is done." lol Who knew, right? I did get out more, though, so I hit that goal.

Looking at the old thread I managed to lose weight. (My covid weight at least - now I'm in to the "I hurt my back weight").
I finished my floors but still didn't hang curtains.
I didn't hit my 300 minutes of exercise a week so will need to refocus there.
I finished my albums but am still waiting on pictures from my inlaws so there will be revisiting.
I still need to download my posts here to finish my Journaling goal.
So missed probably more than I hit, but forward progress.
This year is still in planning stages. Ds goal is to be healthier and eat less junk so we talked about working on that together and putting money towards a big trip.
