LOL ty - two cats! They follow me around from room to room and wander into the pictures, so I decided to go with it and have a bonus cat in most of my pictures. We are really torn about whether we should buy the Victorian bookcase. We were planning to have DH design new built ins, but it is a beautiful piece. The down side is that the dealer wants a lot of money for it because it is signed by the maker, which is something that we don't really care about. But it would cut down on the amount of work that DH has to do on the room, and let him work on other things instead. We also found a nice coat tree for sale by the same dealer, so we may call him and see if we can get a discount for buying multiple pieces. I am confused, which is not a surprise lol. I had to Google Victorian bookcases to see what they look like. Are you saying that even you are planning to replace the built ins you already have, whether you buy the Victorian bookcase or not? No matter what we do as far as purchasing the bookcase, my husband wants to tear out the current built-in bookcase. The original plan for for him to build a new one that was more styled to the correct era. If we buy the antique bookcase, we will have to tear out the current built-in and then put it against that wall. It's about 8 foot wide and 8 foot high, but it won't hold quite as much as the current shelves, so he will have to build in some additional shelves against another wall to hold all our books. But it will be a lot less than he would have to build if we don't buy it. The first image is the book case. The shelf looks lopsided in the picture, but its working fine in the store. The second image is the coat tree. We will probably buy the coat tree even if we don't get the bookcase. ETA the coat tree has hooks for coats, little cast iron basins to put your umbrella in, and a marble bench to sit down and take off wet shoes. It would go in the entry hall.

They have the shelves straightened in this picture, but they have cut off the bottom of it. We would fill it with books instead of collectibles.

Okay, I understand now. Thank you for helping me get it. I am in a FB group for people that own old houses, even though I don’t own one. I just like the posts, looking at the pictures and learning about the good and bad regarding them. So I do understand what you mean about wanting something that is more true to the style from the time period when your house was built. That kind of stuff is sometimes a hot topic in the group I’m in, because many people really appreciate keeping the “character” of old houses, as much as possible, and aren’t fans of gutting an old house and making the entire interior a modern style, just because. The bookshelf and coat tree would look ridiculous in my house, but look like they really would be perfect for yours. My first house is the same exact style as the one I live in now. The one I live in is just twice the size and a different color brick. My first one was built in ‘64, the one I live in now, was built in ‘74. They both have hipped roofs, which is a pretty distinctive style. One of my kids’ friends that grew up across the street from us, came over here with DD to visit after I moved. When they got to the driveway and he saw the house, he told DD, “wow, your Momma bought the exact same house again, in an extra large version” lol. Anyway, all of that is to explain why I said those same lovely pieces that would be beautiful in your home, and fit right in, would look crazy in mine. Please let us know what you decide. I genuinely enjoy this kind of stuff, seeing what other people do with their homes, even if it’s different from what I can do with mine. And please share pics as you go along, as much as you are comfortable with. I wanna seeeee.

It's totally my fault for being confusing in my posts. We have dozens of plans for things that we want, and they all conflict with one another. Like, I really want a fainting couch so when I get tired of my chores I can put my wrist to my forehead and swoon onto the couch, but my husband wants parlor chairs instead. So every time we actually implement a plan, it will eliminate a bunch of other plans. The house is going to be a work in progress for quite a few years; my struggle is to keep it at a reasonable standard so that we can still invite people over for dinner and game nights while its being worked on.

I am all for you getting a fainting couch if you promise to use it exactly as you describe! And tell us every time you do it.
I get it that it will be a work in progress for a few years. But just getting all the windows done was huge, and already a win, right? Just keep on keeping on til you get everything how you want it. You are blessed that DH can handle a lot of the things you and he want to do, himself, so that helps keep costs down, majorly, I am guessing. And saves money to be able to do that other thing y’all would like to do. It will all be worth it in the end.

What a tremendous home you're making, resolution. I love it, every bit of it, and join Pink in celebrating your intention of keeping the whole in period. It's really wonderful.

Lovely, grandma used to have a hall stand just like this one in her big victorian house. It had an array of umbrellas walking stick, hats and scarves with gloves in the drawer........ it just held its own in her hall way.

Today we bought the bookcase and the coat tree. DH's friend has a huge box trailer and he helped us to get them home. The bookcase is in our outbuilding until DH has a chance to take out the built in bookshelves that it will replace. The coat tree is now in our entry hall. The picture was taken next to the front door. Eventually we plan to repaint the hall to be a lighter color, but that is a long ways away.

Resolution, your house is beautiful. I love the coat tree and the staircase.
On our garage extension, we spent a few weeks on the design, then 9 weeks to get the permit. But the job has started and we have footers!

Either way, I will be excited for you as things happen to get you to your end goal.

My mother-in-law and I finished making arm covers and pillows for the living room, so that project is done. She did all the skilled work while I hung out and helped her cut things and pin them together. The arm covers are reversable but I think they look better with the solid red side up. My goal was to make it look like the two couches go together, plus they are a bit uncomfortable without a pillow behind your back. I think my next decorating project will be more paint by numbers.

A friend in Colorado had couches from that era. They were definitely not comfortable to sit on without a pillow for your back.

My husband finished making a new counter height table for the kitchen so I have more cooking space. Before I just had the island as prep surface, and the two little counters on each side of the stove were full of kitchen gadgets. Now I have enough room to buy an air fryer/toaster oven and retire my little toaster.
