I'm hanging my art around the house. It's not for everyone, but I like it which is what matters!

I do ask Mister’s opinion on stuff, just because he lives here too and it’s often his money I’m spending. But even if he doesn’t really care for something (like the new light lol), he tells me to get it/do it if it’s what I want. If he absolutely hated something, I wouldn’t get it though, I wouldn’t want to have to look at something myself every day that I hate. Luckily, he hasn’t hated anything yet lol.

Is a table for our fire bowl that my DH made. The propane cylinder sits underneath but the box keeps people from hitting it with their feet. There's no metal at all used in this and it's all reclaimed wood. He did a wonderful job!

I had hubs put up pictures that are meaningful to us. One is a painting in Paris where I visited. Oddly it was given to me and I only recognized the scene after I visited there. I have some other paintings by a local artist too.
Another is a shadow box that hubs company made up. He found a Texas medallion for the year the company was founded in a bridge that was being torn down and they saved it. When that division was close almost a 100 years later they gave it to him. It was Brown & Root, people with a knowledge of Texas history would know about it.
I have a pencil type drawing of a small country store his cousin found. It was located across from where hubs lived and he went there daily as a kid. An aerial photo of dad and mom's house and small farm that will be passed on to grand son.
And one is a photo of the Houston Convention Center dedication. I was the project accountant on that project and have my signature on the super structure at the convention center so it means something to me. We have many pictures from hubs job all over the world, but what do you do with them. Noone will want them. Hubs says throw them away.
I also have to have one picture repaired; it is one of the curved daggers from Qatar that was mounted in a shadow box. In moving it's came loose, and we need to fix it. It was a gift from a project he was on there. We do have some African art that will go to son, we gave him the masks. He has collected quite a few from around the world.
We try to keep only meaningful things. Oh I do have to have framed an autographed flyer from The Riders in the Sky, they sang in the Woody show sound track. DD LOVES them, we took her to Tennessee to see them, best live comedy and musical we had seen in some time. It was packed and DD wants to see them again.
So this is the stuff that means something to us, but won't to anyone else.

Hence the fire bowl 😇 it puts out an amazing amount of heat!

So this is the stuff that means something to us, but won't to anyone else. It's the nature of life that things which have sentimental value to us aren't likely to have meaning to those who follow. But at least we get to enjoy them in the here and now, and hopefully those that come behind us will be able to make some use of them rather than throwing the whole thing out. We have gotten a lot of frames for our decorations from antique stores, where we buy an old picture with a nice frame and then replace the picture with our art (if we like the picture we just use it as is). One of our frames had a freaky looking Victorian baby in it, like a 16x20 photograph but colorized. We weren't sure what to make of it, but we felt bad throwing out the baby to get the frame, so the frame is in the house with a painting in it, and the baby is hanging up in my husbands shop/outbuilding without the frame.

This one I really liked the picture so we kept the whole thing and have it hanging in the entry way. I always feel peaceful when I look at it, plus it was only $25 for a painting and frame.

So this is the stuff that means something to us, but won't to anyone else. I don’t think you should automatically assume that none of those things would mean anything to your children. I know I would be proud to have a picture of something my Mom helped come to fruition, that has her signature on the actual structure. I have a housecoat and a robe that belonged to my Great Grandmother. She died in the early 90’s. I also have one of the quilts that she use to make. I remember her making those quilts when I was a young child, she’d stopped making them by the time I was a teenager. I was SO excited when my Mom told me she’d found 2 in my Grandmother’s attic and asked if I wanted one. My Grandmother gave me the only set of china dishes I have. I’ve never actually used them, but they are very important to me. So is the old cast iron skillet she gave me. But maybe those are different since she gave them to me while she was still alive. Our children and grandchildren won’t value everything that means something to us, but that doesn’t mean they won’t value anything at all.

I think son will, he has a couple of quilts hubs mom made and he won't let his wife use them. He got to go to the dedication of the building in Houston too, so I'm sure he will want that picture and likely some of the others. It just may be so far to get any of these items, that may be a factor too. But I may give them to them later, I know his wife wants some of them. And I think they will want the very, very old grandfather clock from Germany too. His great uncle bought it and brought it back after WWII, so there are some things. I need to get it fixed again.

My older son and wife were very happy with my mom snd dad’s very pretty bedroom set, crystal, candlesticks and lovely mirror . Other son enjoyed receiving his grandmas funny little garden gnomes . DD really didn’t want anything but some photos. They will be happy with some and donate or sell rest. No matter, as long as you are happy with memories the items have for you.

When we moved we had to leave behind basically anything made of wood. I left the family ornaments with DD1, because those are special to all of us, but I wasn’t going to weigh her down with decorations, frames and stuff. She’s young, doesn’t need additional stuff to clean and store. At the end of the day, it’s just stuff. We took pictures out of frames and we can display them some other way. Gotta get creative sometime.
