I haven't scheduled my booster yet, but I (unfortunately) did have the opportunity to test how well the vaccine works. My brother in Utah is unvaxxed. His reasons are flimsy (based on legit pre-existing issues) and I highly doubt he consulted his doctor to get his/her opinion. He and his also unvaxxed wife are conservative, if that tells you anything. <sigh>
They were in town a couple of weeks ago, and we had dinner with him and my other brother on his last night in town. He texted me 2 days later and said he'd tested positive for covid. To be fair, he'd mentioned he'd been having headaches off and on before he came, but that isn't abnormal for him so he apparently didn't really think much of it. Anyway, I was NOT happy that he'd put us, not to mention who knows how many other people, at risk. I frequently go help a friend who has Parkinson's, either to help her at home when she can't move or to drive her places. I had already agreed to drive her to an appt today, but then I had to go get a test before I could. Luckily, my test was negative.

So far this morning, I've helped 2 people register online for booster shots. Also renewed books for a household that's quarantining.

We've got 22 cases now and there is evidence of community spread. No-one has died but it takes people a while to die.... and those who are infected have been young. So as of yet we still don't know.
Quite easy to identify on a standard PCR because it doesn't have an S gene.....so they do something called an S gene target failure.
Then, since the other variants which don't have an S gene are rare... its more likely to be Omicron. All positives and their contacts have to isolate.
We have got some measures in place (face masks testing) but not gone the full hog...... lets hope its enough We do have a high vaccine take-up already..... and they are going to booster everyone over 12 in double quick time.

Last night I suddenly realized that our booster appts (scheduled for 11 Dec) would have been 3 days past the new 7-month deadline set by the French gov't ... which meant we'd both lose our "vaccination passes". I don't know what would have happened, but I didn't want to find out!
It took me 2 hours, but I was able to find 2 spots at the vaccination center near school, so DH and I are both boosted as of late this afternoon! We had previously had AstraZeneca X 2, so we're happy we were able to get the Pfizer.
I hope I don't have a reaction ... the timing isn't ideal for me since I have to be at school all day tomorrow and Thursday. But I'm very grateful I was able to find two spots at the last minute!!!

The horse is already stolen, folks. Amsterdam went back and tested old samples taken prior to the release of information about the new variant. Yep, they found the strain. It is naive to think that closing borders is going to help at this point. You can’t find something if you don’t look for it, and no one was looking for it. The fact that it is already so widespread suggests (to me anyway) that it is very likely that it is controlled by the vaccine. Otherwise there would have been a large increase of cases with the new and different symptoms. www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59473131

The Walk of the Penguin Mich I'm not surprised at all ... every time they go back to do more testing, they find that (whatever strain) was already present earlier than they thought. I have several examples ... a close (French) friend whose entire family had "the worst flu they'd ever had" after vacationing in NY in Feb 2020. Another close (American) friend who runs the English program for an art school here. Some of the professors (including my friend and her DH) had "the worst flu they'd ever had" in Jan 2020. After Covid became common knowledge, they checked the register, and found out that the January intake of Chinese students were all from Wuhan. Your post makes me relieved! And I agree, closing borders now is closing the barn doors after the horse has escaped. DH and I are just deliriously happy that our health passes won't expire!!! PS The Walk of the Penguin Mich that link is dead. I checked the BBC page but I wasn't sure which article you meant to link.

Maybe we should close the Canadian border shown to keep the variant out. The fantasy that we can keep these variants out is just that, is just that, a fantasy

And we have our first US Omicron variant case. Vaccinated, mild case, California, returned to US from SA on 11/22. Definitely isolated, aggressive contact tracing promised.
I wonder if the folks on his connecting flight from Newark or Atlanta will even be notified. Technically, they were masked.
There's a certain irony in this case was detected in San Francisco instead of Atlanta.

My MIL was diagnosed with COPD and listened to her Dr and finally got the vax--so there is hope with people listening to Drs.

Plenty of right wing weirdos in California. Seriously millions upon millions of Q believers in that state.

Vaccinated MN resident traveled to convention in NYC had mild symptoms identified as Omicron variant, symptoms resolved already! So omicron here already in US But remembering the few initial cases in Washington state and now here we are almost 2 years later. But likely cases were already in US like in Italy Good to know omicron in a vaccinated person mild and resolved Wondering will omicron ‘swamp’ out the Delta variant and result in more? but milder cases? Information coming in now content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MNMDH/bulletins/2fee8d4

Am I the only one that thinks this latest variant Omicron sounds like the name of a Transformer " more than meets the eye "? my Kool-Aid drinking Trumper cousin put up a meme on FB this morning. "OMICRON" is an anagram for "MORONIC" with text under a fact-checker spoiler of "They are straight up fucking with us at this point." I wanted to ask if she knew what the word anagram meant, but just put her on snooze again. I really need to just unfollow her. she adds nothing to my day. I don't wanna hear about just deleting her outright. ugh, family.

www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/omicron-covid-variant-outbreak-at-christmas-party-infects-60-people/ar-AARotxg?ocid=msedgntpDozens of people in Norway who attended a work Christmas party have tested positive for Omicron, and if the cases are confirmed, it could be the world's biggest known single outbreak of the new coronavirus variant.
After staff at the renewable energy company Scatec attended the party at Louise Restaurant & Bar in Oslo on November 26, 50 people returned positive PCR tests for COVID, while another 10 tested positive following lateral flow checks, according to NRK.
Norwegian media reported that all those at the party had to be vaccinated and show a negative test for COVID. Among the infected, 41 live in Oslo and the rest in other municipalities.
Scatec's communications manager, Stian Tvede Karlsen, said that none of the participants had tested positive for coronavirus before the party, according to E24.

Wow! I would love to know how recent those tests were and what type of test they were.
This event is definitely pointing toward Omicron having a fantastic tendency toward super-spreading events.
It's probably also why Michael Osterholm was talking a bit about the possibility of the Omicron variant evading existing medical tests to detect it on his podcast recorded yesterday. He said that there was no indication yet that this variant could evade existing testing mechanisms but he has never addressed that issue before.
