"Some towns may want to take a lead from the big cities to stop falls. New York City achieved decreases in injury rates through public awareness campaigns and laws that require window guards in apartments with kids age 10 and younger." Falls from windows injure 5,000 kids each year: Study

NYC has shut down city schools, about 1 million children. But bars are still open- bars have to shut at 10pm Priorities?? Sadly many poor kids don’t have access to computers and or their parents can’t help them. The magic 3% infection rate was reached and schools shut even though there aren’t that many cases in the actual schools. Lots of money was spent to upgrade air flow in schools for safety now many of these kids will be at home in old apartment buildings with old HVAC. Madness So they didn’t just give the poor kids chrome books? That’s what my district did. And they found someway to get them Internet. Though no amount of hardware is going to help the parents don’t have the band with to deal with the technical issues and make sure their kids hop on class every day.

Sadly, that makes me feel slightly better about our 1,076 positives today in our 4.2 million people.
And that was enough to trigger the Governor to invoke a 2 week freeze. I'm glad we seem to have one of the most aggressive responses of the country. I wish my governor would do that. When we opened up, the governor and all the health officials swore up and down that we would shut down again if the case counts got too high. Well, the case counts have skyrocketed, and the measures they’re taking are not nearly aggressive enough.

Yes chrome books were given - not sure how many? But many don’t have internet connections and many parents don’t know enough to help kids It’s really difficult when the parent/s often need to work at essential jobs or even if they have WFH . Oh well this group of kids going through the probably 2 years of turmoil will hopefully either overcome or sadly be damaged by the experience

I think this next generation will have a much better go of keeping themselves prepared in the future.
We've always talked about the abstract idea of SHTF, but in their lifetimes they have seen actual SHTF and what happens when you don't have any preparations.
I also think many people are now starting businesses at home they otherwise wouldn't have. I think that's actually a positive point of COVID.

The trumpies will never admit that their idol is vile, selfish, inept, and most importantly dead wrong 250,000 plus times over dead wrong Tennesseer

Predictably my county has suspended hybrid and will be 100% virtual beginning Thursday. So the high schoolers got a whole week and a half of hybrid before returning to virtual. That to me seems more disruptive and harmful than just leaving them virtual. Case counts were quickly rising last Monday when they let them go to hybrid as planned. In that short time frame, 19 high school students tested positive for covid. Probably gotten outside of the school environment but then they are in school spreading it around.

Unfortunately the virus is raging around Europe Canada and the US surpringly even in countries without Trump Trump was going to make America great again. So now, just because we aren’t any worse than anyone else(so far), it’s ok. Make America average!! Didn’t know republicans are ok with that. We are the richest, most technologically advanced country. Spend more on healthcare than anyone else. The world thought we were best prepared to deal with a pandemic. And you are an apologists for this administration. A little honesty about how poor our response was would be nice. But you would rather point everyone else’s mistake than admit ours. And just wait until we are hit full force with this surge. We aren’t doing nearly enough to control it. There are estimates of 2500 dead by christmas

So there was a new decision made at my school district. High school is currently virtual for 3 weeks (starting yesterday) due to a statewide order. The rest of the grades are also going to virtual learning for 2 weeks after the Thanksgiving weekend. Then they'll go back for a week to reconnect before Christmas break. There will also be 2 weeks of virtual learning after Christmas break.
That is the current plan, barring any future developments. I think it's a good compromise.

The school district where nephew and niece go is going virtual starting a week from Monday for two weeks. They have no school next week, so effectively that is a 3 week break from hybrid learning.
Their statement says it's not because of covid among students but because of the expected surge in cases due to Thanksgiving as explained to them by the county health department. At least they are being proactive.

Our kids school is still doing in person 5 days per week for those that choose it. It had been 6 weeks since our last case. This week we had 4 total. So far our kids haven’t had contact with any of the cases. They are committed to staying open as long as these new cases were isolated and there isn’t an outbreak.

My oldest remains in in-person elementary 4.5 days/week (they dismiss early on Wednesdays). There has only been one COVID positive kid in the elementary in September.
The high school basketball team has had four positive kids so far, and I hear 50 kids are quarantined at the high school because of this. Thankfully there is no contact between the HS and elementary.

High school football championships were yesterday and finish up today.
People are mentioning what a coincidence that the two teams that played in the championship game for the biggest schools announced immediately after the game ended they are going virtual for two weeks.
If the school district is virtual, activities are not allowed so they could not have played in the championship game.

Our school district is switching from hybrid back to remote learning for middle and high school students on Monday. Elementary school is still in person, for the moment. My son’s elementary as of last Friday had 2 students with it (out of nearly 500 students), and 2 staff (out of 57), but 10 more staff are out due to exposure. 😳
It wouldn’t surprise me if they switch to hybrid or remote for elementary kids before Christmas, but they have been trying to keep those kids in school, so we’ll see.
