I don't use hash browns or tator tots. And I was in the grocer today and forgot the damn pie crusts. Well its worse then that, I think something happened to the fridge last night in the storm. The one in the garage, and the freezer is cold but the bottom isn't. So looks like a new garage fridge. Damn, lost all that food and that too. Hubs says its cold, its turned up all the way and barely cool. Yes the freezer is working on it. I've never understood having extra freezers and refrigerators. Well, maybe an extra freezer. It's expensive to run them and you always run the risk of losing a bunch of food. And, experience has shown a lot of stuff ends up getting thrown out or never used. I have an extra fridge and an extra freezer. The extra fridge is just for beer and other refreshments in the garage because that is the currency around here and it's my party room. As far as the freezer, I get beef by the 1/4 or 1/2 and buy frozen in bulk from Sam's Club. I would not be happy with just the freezer with my fridge.

I can understand "an" extra fridge or freezer, not 3 freezers and 2 refrigerators. That just seemed excessive for 3 people. But, like with tater tots and the Duggers, to each their own. (Like the first, the second are creepy weirdos.)

Oh hash browns aren't offensive, I just don't buy things like that I guess. And I'm not sure I have ever eaten a tator tot?
I cook most stuff from scratch, so I just buy potatoes by the bag. On occasion I will buy processed french fries, hubs likes those at times.

I even get nervous about touching the soap pump because it is touched before hands are cleaned. You touch the pump before you wash hands so should be OK. Yep, my head tells me I’m washing anyway but the thought of germs hanging out on the piece I touch messes with me. I don’t even keep my toothbrush or toothpaste in the bathroom. Read about what gets thrown up by flushing the toilet (I know one is supposed to close the lid before flushing but forget to) and now I can’t keep stuff that goes in my mouth in the bathroom. I’ve got issues. You are not alone. I have the same thoughts and issues. And it’s a relief to see that I’m not alone.

Going to read a bit, just trying to relax tonight. Dinner was just potato salad, I cooked the eggs and potatoes this morning so they would chill. Then combined tonight. Had some of the big hot dogs like they serve at Sam's Club. For me I fixed some catfish, I really like it at times plus tator salad. That was it tonight.
DD and I had a smoothie this morning. Kroger's has these little discount bags of different fruits or veggies. They are really ripe, so they pack quite a few in for $.99 each. I got 6 or 7 mandarin oranges, and bag of 5 nectarines, another of poblano peppers and one of small zucchini, each $.99. I even got one of 5 onions for $.99, didn't see anything wrong with them. So this morning we had a smoothie with an orange, a nectarine, and banana with milk plus a bit of honey. I need to add some vanilla too. This smoothie mix doesn't make it thick like the older brand did. Also a mango will make it nice and thick. We used to have them each morning then kind of got away from it. She does not eat enough fruit so very healthy for her.

So few stores do that anymore and it's unfortunate. It makes me wonder where the almost-overripe fruits and veggies go. The only produce I can find marked down is bananas- I buy a lot of them and peel and freeze. Since I do a lot of stir-frying, vegetables almost past their prime are OK for that.

We see a good amount of marked down produce. Since we are yellow label shoppers, we tend to buy a lot of that produce. We eat it before it goes completely bad, so it's a good bargain for us.

I used to get tons of marked down stuff including produce when I could shop at Kroger. It must be a chain specific decision. I don't see that around me. The only thing I got pre pandemic was marked down meats.

The little Foodarama store near me always has a shopping cart close to the checkout stands with packages of aging fruits and veggies. Some stores used to have a section of the meat market with stuff expiring that day. I bought a lot of great meat and poultry that way. It went straight to the freezer for 1/2 the price.

The fruits are perfect for smoothies, wonderful to have dead ripe fruit for them. Making us one this morning, again nectarine, banana, and a mandarin orange. It is so good and so healthy.
I'm stiff, sore, and tired. Couldn't get to sleep last night so rolled and tossed for awhile. I will work it out, nothing new, been that way for many years. So up about 10.
I think the garage fridge may have cooled down. It's really hot out there and took some time to cool down. I told hubs we need to tip it over and vac all the dirt and stuff out from under it. I blow out the garage floor and likely has stuff built up under it also. I will check this morning and wipe down while its empty. We really have to watch, stuff on the door will make it hold open. Just never to that extent before. I would rather have a better one out there.
Oh no, I just saw on Bloomberg where SteinMart filed for bankruptcy and may close all its stores, damn. We have one at the city. About all that is there now a Ross Dress for Less, a Coat Factory, or whatever the name, TJ Maxx. I think Kohl's is in trouble too. That's it.
Kohl's may have clothing but the others are kind of hit and miss. I don't like online shoe and clothes shopping. Very difficult for fit a lot of times.

Kroger still has some reduced meats but this store is in the city and I don't get up there often.

Where I lived previously it was all sent to a hog farm. I'd asked about getting "trim" for my iguana and was told they had a contract that all of their excess fruit/veg went out to the hog farm and they weren't permitted to sell it.

I wasn't sure how much of it was the stores I had been shopping in since moving north for the summer, or how much was pandemic shortages and demand, but I noticed a lot of stuff was more expensive up here than where I moved from. I haven't bought anything really exotic or anything, just meats, dairy, produce and the occasional snack chip. I drove a little farther this morning and braved a Market Basket location that is fairly well-known as being a crazy store b/c of the clientele, and found prices more in line with what I saw before I moved. with the prices for ground meats what they were, the pups have been getting a lot of shredded rotisserie chicken this summer.
I just pulled out my receipt, here are some prices for comparison: $2.99/lb 85% lean ground beef $2.49/lb ground pork $3.79/lb turkey breast tenderloin $4.49 sliced mozzarella log <--I paid $6.99 for the same item at another store a few weeks ago $4.49/lb snow peas <-- I've been paying $5.99/lb at that same other store all summer

Then with clean hands take paper towel, spray towel with lysol or bleach solution, wipe soap pump with paper towel, and toss the paper towel. Now everything will be clean and safe.

The big storms that happened here on Monday will be causing food prices to increase.
Approximately 43% of the corn crop was destroyed.

I think about it, but I’m too lazy to go that far. Plus, that does nothing about the other people in the household that was their hands. The motion sensor dispensers....hmmmm In this house, the toilets are in their own tiny little room with a door, within the bathroom, except for the guest bathroom. Even with that setup, I still don’t like leaving my toothbrush out in the bathroom. I’ve never said that I’m not a little weird.

I don't use hash browns or tator tots. Yeah, my first reaction at that suggestion was "eeuw". I seem to remember an episode of The Duggars where Michele was creating some sort of tater tot casserole which was a family staple. I've never understood having extra freezers and refrigerators. Well, maybe an extra freezer. It's expensive to run them and you always run the risk of losing a bunch of food. And, experience has shown a lot of stuff ends up getting thrown out or never used. I have a mini-fridge downstairs that we bought when it was DH's Man cave. I think it still ahs some bottles of pop that are undoubtedly stale by now and it's turned on. I keep thinking it will be useful when DS and DDIL visit (they use the downstairs bedrooms) but they're perfectly capable of coming upstairs to get what they want and they're not here that often. I may try listing it as Free Stuff on Craigslist and see how fast it disappears. And I'm glad you're starting to feel better! You obviously aren’t from fly over country. For those of us from places like WI, MN, ND, SD, and IA, tater tot casserole is fine dining. A staple of church basement pot luck dinners and family gatherings.

Tater tots are a staple of Southern cuisine as well. Go to Chik-fil-a for breakfast sometime. They sell them although they may have a different name. And everyone who has ever eaten a school lunch that included a hot dog knows tater tots! The only time I use them is occasionally in a Christmas breakfast casserole, but that's just because the package is too big for a single user like me. A foodie I am not.

That means minimal rice, potatoes, white bread, etc. and nothing fried. And I'm assuming tater tot casserole involves some cheese somewhere? That's not on the list of permitted foods, either!

I spent $38 at Publix today, buying some produce (lettuce and baby carrots), some meat (sirloin burgers so less fat), Eggland's Best eggs (lower cholesterol), two packages of Eggland's frozen omelets (need SOMETHING different for breakfast but it needs to have protein yet I am lazy and hungry in the morning), and several types of snack foods like Goldfish and Cheezits and so on. I like the individual packages when they are on BOGO so I just don't dive in. The rest was spices, etc. to make stuff to eat. I can only shop Publix now for their specials. But at least those have come back. Coupons are back, too. There was a dispenser in front of the omelets so lucky find.
