I haven’t been able to find baking powder that is aluminum free for months at any of the grocery stores I go to. I’m almost out. The BJs I go to has been spotty with stocking up the brands I usually buy for paper towels and tp. I’m getting so tired of the whole shopping ordeal: With outside clothes that come off as soon as I get back home. With still wiping everything down. With the crazy amount of hand washing, thinking I touched something contaminated. I even get nervous about touching the soap pump because it is touched before hands are cleaned. I’m thinking of getting the automatic soap dispensers. The cheapo in me argues with the OCD part of me about shelling out the money though.

Not groceries, but has anyone else noticed that some generic medicines have been out of stock for awhile? I've been trying to get Timolol, one of my glaucoma drops, for a couple of months now. I had a couple of bottles stockpiled in the fridge since I use it down to the last drop, but I am halfway through my last bottle. The pharmacist said there is a national outage of not only that but several other medicines. She didn't know if the pharmaceutical companies were diverting their efforts or what.
My eye dr. and I struggle to find drugs that work. Some don't even within the same family of drugs. This means I will have to do a follow-up visit on whatever she has to prescribe.

He is saying only drugs produced in the US, but since none of it is, I think we will see extreme shortages of everything.
Sure that sounds great, but not going to happen till action has been taken by congress.
I so screwed up, we lost power last night from 8 till 1. But I had stocked up on groceries yesterday and did not get the fridge in the garage shut good apparently. I went out this morning and the door was ajar, everything in it warm. Damn, I lost 3 gallons of milk, 2 big containers from Sams of yogurt. The carrots will be ok, an unopened big container of catsup. Margarine, should be ok? Ricotta cheese no good. I don't know if I put the big block of Velvetta in there. I'm really aggravated, just wasted a ton of money. After so many hours and hot out, I'm sure I need to it all.

Velveeta should be fine and margarine too. I agree that the milk, yogurt and ricotta are gone. Sorry that happened to you

Aldi even had spray bottles of their house brand disinfectant cleaner this morning, the first I've seen since March. Claims to kill 99% of viruses and bacteria so will be a good countertop disinfectant.

At least then your hands don't actually touch anything. I've found people usually stay a little further away if I wear gloves, too.

Now $244 plus $275, So $519 to date. Add $8 for lunch from McD's so $527. I also had to renew Sam's Club membership for $45 on top of that. And I did not get my pie crusts, forgot at Krogers, the local store is really expensive, ouch. Now I have broccoli for quiche and no pie crusts, sigh. Just make a frittata instead. It is essentially a quiche without a crust, so fewer calories.

You can make your own baking powder (with out aluminum): How to make (aluminum-free!) baking powder from scratch 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar. 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch (cornflour, for UK bakers) (of course you need to make the amount you need for your recipe - double the above if you need two teaspoons of baking powder...) I guess it would depend on what you are baking - if you are doing a specialty cake/cookie or recipe it may make a difference - but for general everyday baking it should be fine. baking powder - like "self rising flour" is a convenience thing (a combination of stuff you have on your self).

Well, shit, now you tell us! I had to send DS to the store last week because I was making banana bread and the one thing I didn't have was baking powder... lol well, cream of tartar isn't usually a "kitchen staple" but in these times of "empty shelves" it might be available 'cause no one knows what to do with it. I thought that might help out - if one's favorite brand of baking powder wasn't available. (I use it in eggs. and meringue (I have often used reciepes that call for cream of tartar). I also use it with a little vinegar (to clean with) or hydrogen perioxide to "scrub" a particular pot I have (it's mostly a nostalgia thing as the pot is like 80 years old and that's how my mom cleaned it...)

I've been struggling to fill one of my major medications: hydroxychloroquine. There are some new requirements that you can't buy now than 30 pills in 90 days. Um, I take 2 pills per day....and I take it every day. The pharmacy and I have to keep calling drs, insurance, and god knows who else to fill this prescription.
Food, we've been doing ok but I buy from places that deliver: like azure standard and imperfect foods. And I buy in large amounts so I don't need to go out very often.

Well its worse then that, I think something happened to the fridge last night in the storm. The one in the garage, and the freezer is cold but the bottom isn't. So looks like a new garage fridge. Damn, lost all that food and that too. Hubs says its cold, its turned up all the way and barely cool. Yes the freezer is working on it.

I even get nervous about touching the soap pump because it is touched before hands are cleaned.
You touch the pump before you wash hands so should be OK.

Yep, my head tells me I’m washing anyway but the thought of germs hanging out on the piece I touch messes with me. I don’t even keep my toothbrush or toothpaste in the bathroom. Read about what gets thrown up by flushing the toilet (I know one is supposed to close the lid before flushing but forget to) and now I can’t keep stuff that goes in my mouth in the bathroom. I’ve got issues.

It's expensive to run them and you always run the risk of losing a bunch of food. And, experience has shown a lot of stuff ends up getting thrown out or never used.

I live rural and its a way of life for us so I don't have to go to the store everyother day. My freezers contain foodstuffs I put up from gardens and extra meat so we don't have to drive 2 hours to get it often. I do not like grocery store meat.
And we stock up like I did yesterday, sigh, better prices at the 40 mile market then here. Like the large pack of sliced cheese is about $7 versus $12 or $13 here. About all the prices are like that. I have only lost food twice in my life and both times here. We both agree the door doesn't shut and stay shut on that one very well. I need to replace it. We have 2 fridges and the house one has a huge freezer and a large freezer in the garage and a smaller one in the basement.
But I just lost $50 to $60 of food this time. I buy milk 3 gallons at a time, we use a lot in cooking and drinking. I had extra yogurt, cheese, and veggies out there plus margarine, ketchup and drinks. Also ricotta cheese for my lasagna, I hate to cook and not have the ingredients. I am only going to town more often right now as I'm working on the house over there.

I agree. Most of my extra is canned or dried. I have one big freezer that i keep a beef in. I have 3 cans of the kind of baking powder empress wants 🤔

We have a chest freezer and an extra fridge in the basement. Our stuff gets used up. My family buys a cow and pig every year. With trying to minimize trips, I need somewhere to store it all. The combined gas and electric bill runs $100/month. My AC is set to 70 and it's been 95 here for weeks now.
The freezer side of the kitchen fridge sucks. It's missing shelves and I can't use the bottom basket now because water is leaking and freezing there. You Tube and Google have given me a general idea of what's wrong but I can't find the defrost drain on this model. Pulling it out is a pain because of the water line.
I think I'm just going to call someone. My DH has zero patience with repairs. Will build new stuff all day long but that's it. I don't want a new one because we are gutting the kitchen to the studs in the next two years.

I have an extra mini-fridge but not an extra full-size refrigerator or freezer. I did have a freezer, but I gave it to my daughter when I grew tired of going to the basement for things. The mini-fridge was also in the basement, a leftover from our pool hall days. It is useful enough to keep. I keep drinks, etc. in there. If we have a power outage, I don't have to open the main fridge for stuff. I also use it to cool stuff I cook before I put it in the main fridge because that warms your food in there. And for holidays it is awesome to have extra room for stuff.

I'm single. I have a small energy star 5.something cubic foot chest freezer in the basement. I took the plunge about 4 years ago when I bought it. I am not the target audience for a chest freezer - even a small one. The bottom layer of my freezer is water in milk jugs and 2 liter soda bottles. All my frozen food is on top of that and in it's bins. It costs me a couple bucks a month to keep it running. It's worth the convenience. even though I typically only use 1/2 of the space in it. (the other 1/2 being frozen water.) I've got seasonally frozen "garden" veggies/squash/whatever else I prep and freeze. (I had 20 pounds of prepped winter squash last year. - I've had gallon bags with prepped fruit (strawberries, raspberries, apples, pears, etc...) probably 30 pounds in the past. I also buy an extra turkey at Thanksgiving to save for either a "Christmas in March" or Christmas in July party. I got tired of having trouble finding a turkey off season and then the outrageous price (for a turkey that had been sitting in the store's freezer since the previous November...) The rest of the space is used up with frozen meat (when I buy it), the occassional bag of store bought frozen veggies (I'm fond of broccolli, brussel sprouts, and spinach). usually a loaf or two of "specialty breads", and a home run inn pizza or two. and whatever else I find on sale. I have to admit, it's almost a second job to plan out how what's in the freezer gets used. when it was novel and new - I bought all sorts of stuff. Now I only buy and freeze stuff I have a "menu plan" for OR a specific purpose for (like that extra turkey.). I have to make an effort to make sure I use up what's in that freezer. It's not hard to do... but it's not a "habit" or an "autopilot" for me.

I use every one of them. I've never noticed a change in my electric bill with any of them. They can't be using much electric because in spring and fall my electric only runs $20-$25 per month. I buy almost all of my meat when it's on sale. I rarely buy it for full-price. Just last week I pulled out a turkey I bought after XMas at a cost of $5. Around the holidays I can pick up prime rib and hams for half-price, so I stock up. Wasting fruits and veggies is a thing of the past, cause now I freeze anything I don't use right away. They save me a lot of money.
