I skipped bathing for a couple of days. It saves on bodywash, and laundry. ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png)

I'm waiting until my pickup tank is almost empty (it's at 1/4 tank right now) and then I'll fill up at the Fred Meyer gas station. I'll save 70 cents a gallon (possibly 80), so will get over $10 off the final bill ![](http://images.proboards.com/v5/images/smiley/smiley.png) The gas rewards are nice (don't usually get this much off gas, but bought a kindle fire for DS at FM, as well as a spinning bike). Yeah, I was able to do the same at Tops market. Got $0.80 off a gallon. Waited until I was on fumes. Filled up for 17 gallons. saved $13.60. One earns points at Tops based on coupons used.

SKU: I do miss the Topps fill up for less. I use to go to the Baldwinsville store.
I worked on the celery I bought. I'm drying the leaves and using some to make soup. Then I have some in ice water to eat raw. I haven't been a good girl since Christmas with what I have been eating. So it's time to get back to 'good eats'.
BTW: The dried leaves are potent. More so than the raw veggie.

WOW! That's nearly 1000.00. What does DH say about all of these savings? Thank you! Unlike his wife ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/charmed.png) , DH doesn't talk much. When I tell him about specific deals I found, he "huhs" in approval. However, I will say, he got on board a few years ago and shares with me the deals he finds, and laments when prices on certain products go up. He even feels bad when he forgets to use a coupon(s). ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

So, speaking of food, remember the generic tuna conversation we had a few weeks ago? Whelp, I bought some, and am eating some now on my salad. I love it! There's really no difference between it and the brands that cost .30+ more. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/thumbsup.png)

I just made tuna today using some of the celery. I have 4 sandwiches that I'll eat for each meal until they're gone. The soup turned out good too. I'll share that with my family. I put a small pinch of red pepper flakes in it. Gave it just a tad of a kick.

I was decluttering and looking for things to donate today, and came across some silver salt and pepper shakers. So I hopped in the car, drove to the pawnshop/coin place and sold them for $79! Woot! Woot! Play money to play with! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/laugh.png)

This week has been deal free. Bad grocery ads. I spent 61.00 plus at WM yesterday for groceries and HandB items. Not excited about that, but the good thing is I get to eat this week. IGGY: You have been doing so well, I'd love to see a year end tally from you of your savings. I bet you'd be happily surprised at the results.Dutt, I just looked at my 2012 spreadsheet: I saved $846.67 on groceries and HBAs last year using coupons, buying manager specials and sale items. More recently: Last Friday, I saved .30 per gallon of fuel using my shoppers card. $2.34 a gallon? Unheard of these days! Even at full price ($2.64) that is $0.88 cheaper than I have to pay. I am sooo jealous

I made a pumpkin bundt cake today using 1/2 can of dollar store pumpkin and a spice cake mix that I got for .59 or .69 cents. (I can't remember LOL) I threw in .50 worth of raisins and free walnuts. So about 1.70 for a cake that would cost 6.00 for half as much cake in the grocery. I'll share it with family and all will be happy. 'It's a good thing." ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rofl.gif) The other half of pumpkin will make soup for me.

Joss, thank you! It's rare-and I have to wait until I'm in the Big City to fill up. Here in our dinky, vacation destination town, the price is *always* marked up.
dutt, you just reminded me to bake something this evening w/ canned pumpkin! Molly, I tried to quote your post last night, but cannot do so from my iPod on this new format. $79?! Woot woot! Excellent job!!! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/banana.gif)

I took a roast sandwich, and banana for my lunch. I came home, and took leftover roast, the broth from cooking it, added mixed veggies, and simmered while MASH was on. It made some great soup. I have some leftover for lunch tomorrow.

I went to the grocery that had Catalinas if you bought a number of their brand items. I got 4 items from the reduced bin and received 1.50 back. I went to the produce section and got radishes and a tomato. I paid .09 cents for the produce.
IGGY: I've got a nosey question for you. Are you brand specific with your Ragu sauce?

Dutt, no worries! You're not being nosy! I just have always found it's less expensive than most of the others. I still clip coupons for other brands, just in case. Ragu is now expensive, too, unless it's on sale. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) Sounds like you found some nice deals as well!

IGGY: Oh good. I didn't want to push in. If you're in for another challenge, Hunts sauce in the can is cheaper and very good. When I cheat I use one can of that with one can of crushed tomatoes. But that's to feed a brood of hungry adults. I never fess up to cheating either! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

Dutt! You naughty girl! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) And, Hunts sauce happens to be one of the things on sale for .49 this week! I just adjusted my list for this evening. Thank you for the suggestion. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

I agree that Hunts in the can is a good sauce--I like it better than some of the expensive brands. The "no sugar added" is really good, and has the benefit of no added sugar ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

I really don't see the sugar added in sauce as a necessity. (sp?) Non Italians put it in. I can taste it and it is repulsive to me.

Whelp, I went to the store last night and bought my 20 items to receive $10 off my total. Apparently our store charges tax on food. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/sarcasm.png) Any woo, I am ashamed to admit I completely forgot to buy the Hunts sauce. Oh, I bought 3 cans Hunts tomatoes, but did I remember the sauce? Oh, nooooo, why would I do that? ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png) And, I agree about added sugar being unnecessary. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png)

Oh nothing wrong with Hunts! I have been using it for years. I generally get the veggie or mushroom version and load in some fresh chopped onions, peppers, and mushrooms and let it simmer a while before I use/serve it. Today after work I stopped at the Dollar store for some toiletries and then hit Aldi's and the regular grocery for some sale items. I'd estimate my total of just about $45.75 would have been closer to $62.00 had I not shopped smart. That's a pretty decent percentage of savings in my book. Just livin' the dream. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

We're having bitterly cold weather this week in the northeast, and since I live in a city without a car I haven't wanted to go grocery shopping. It was snowing tonight when I left work, but I really needed produce, so I decided to stop by my favorite produce place. They usually have really good deals, but I guess they really marked things down to sell whatever they could to those of us who braved the weather. Boxes of strawberries for $1, tomatoes were 2 lbs for $1, oranges were 4 for $1, etc. So I filled two bags for $17! That was fantastic! Fortunately, I didn't fall on the way home with my bags. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/cool.png) On another note, I've noticed the travel mug I purchased late last year for $3.99 has been a great deal. I love to go out for walks, but I don't enjoy walking in the cold without a hot drink. Since I don't want to stop by a coffee shop and spend $2-3 every time I want to go for a walk, I stopped walking in the cold. Now that I have my new travel mug, I brave the cold weather much more frequently and enjoy my walks with my hot tea. Who knew a $3.99 item could bring me such joy! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

As for the sugar in tomato sauce comments, my mom's family is from Italy and they add a teaspoon when the sauce is too bitter, which happens sometimes. We make our own sauce, so we don't buy the Ragu-premade kind. I often use Hunts sauce in the aluminum cans to make my sauce because I don't have time to cook tomatoes into sauce, but I've never had to add sugar to it; their brand just isn't bitter enough to need sugar.

Gals, I just have to thank you once again for all I've learned from you. Today's success story: Colgate on sale for 10 for $10. From last week's newspapers (thank you, DH!!), I had two 50 cent off coupons which the store doubles up to $1. So, I scored two tubes for 8 cents tax! I've never cherry picked like this on just one item, and the cashier, who is frugal herself, LOOKED at the second coupon for several seconds. When I handed her the nickel and 3 pennies, I exclaimed: "The things I learn on the internet!" Even better? I just looked at my receipt: "You Saved 100% Off Your Order Today!" ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

Hmmm IGGY, I think you're ready to be a frugal hack trainer now. Here's your certificate of completion. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/car.png) It's a brand new car!!!!!

I fell off the wagon. I bought a canned coke, pecan rolls, and an ice cream. It cost me under $3 but still.... I got a splinter too when I slid off.

Interesting, I've never heard of using baking soda in tomato sauce. Now I'm curious about trying it! I'm not against fat per se, but I don't see the point in adding bad fats unnecessarily to your diet when you have healthier options like cooking sprays or even a bit of olive oil to your pot or pan. There's a difference between adding saturated fat to your diet versus unsaturated. Then again, I believe in most things in moderation, including saturated fat (for example, adding beef to your vegetable soup) and sugar. I can count on one hand the number of times I've added 1 teaspoon of sugar to my pot full of homemade spaghetti sauce, so it's not as if I'm saying, " a heaping pile of sugar into your sauce." In general, I try to limit my sugar intake. I promise you that I practice what I preach. And I am ALWAYS trying to promote better health for everyone, so please don't feel as if I was attacking you because that honestly wasn't my intention. Even as a waitress, I tried to help people make better choices. When parents asked what drinks we had for kids, I told them about our various milks and juices and neglected to mention sodas. More often than not, they would ask which sodas we carried and said they wanted something caffeine free for their kids, so they wouldn't be wound up. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif) I also always politely suggested that they could exchange their fries for a vegetable.

You can add baking soda to pots of beans you are cooking to help reduce the effects.

If you try the BS, just a pinch does the trick. Too much and you can taste it.

I really don't see the sugar added in sauce as a necessity. (sp?) Non Italians put it in. I can taste it and it is repulsive to me. Many Italians(right off the boat, one generation or two out) put a bit of sugar in the sauce. It's done based on how people like it to taste or to reduce bitterness in the old days from using tomatoes that weren't the best. Some add sugar, some don't. Some(grandmother from Sicily) put a bit of celery in to reduce bitterness and make it more sweet. Some add fennel. It varies widely and has nothing to do with how Italian one is. There doesn't exist a single way of making sauce. It varies widely from person to person. If you travel to the North in Italy, the Tyroleans(polenta) don't really have as many tomato based dishes as they do in the south. A part of our family are from the Tyrol region, they eat a lot of polenta.
