Must give credit to Morrobaymom for originally creating this thread. Hopefully she doesn't mind that I restart it here. I've loved this thread since the original one was started and I had something I wanted to share today There is a casino/entertainment complex in my town. I am not a gambler, but once or twice a year I will go with friends for special occasions and spend a $5 or $10 at most at the casino. I received a post card in the mail stating the casino missed me and offered me $25 in free play to come to the casino. How could I resist?? I stopped by on my way home this evening and redeemed my play money. I made sure to have a couple complimentary glasses of soda as I bounced around about 5 machines to try to have as great of an experience as possible. An hour later I had used up the $25 free play and cashed out my winnings on that $25...$27.28 I also signed up for a 20% discount on my cell phone plan due to my employer being a good customer of my cell phone carrier. This will result in a savings of around $15 a month once taxes are included.

That's cool about the "free" money! (oh, just as an aside, credit for the original thread should go to ASH, but Morro made sure we kept new ones started and alive. Love to both of them (the posters) and all three threads!!) I've thought of starting a new one as well, but haven't had anything to really "announce". Glad you started one

Has Ash made it over here? I saw she wanted to exchange e-mails with someone on the old threads so she wouldn't get lost. Since I don't communicate with anyone off of the boards I didn't think I was a good candidate.

Great thread! What I did today (yesterday, actually) concerned self-discipline and food, two of my weaknesses. My DD and I were out shopping for a replacement light fixture. We didn't find one we liked. On the way home, and since it was near supper time, DD asked to stop off to buy a falafel. Though I was hungry and I really falafels I resisted the temptation, thereby saving $4.50 and unwanted calories.

I called my cable provider and asked for a discount on my services. Lowered my bill $15 for 6 months. The last deal I got was a $15/month savings for a full year. Once the promotion expires, I wait a month or two, then call back to ask for another promotion.

Actuall, this is from Monday. Local store had chicken leg quarters on sale for $0.29/lb. That is a GREAT price. Have not seen it that low in several years. I did NOT buy because:
1. I have several 3-5lb pkgs in my freezer 2. Smallest pkgs were 11 lb and as a single person household that is just WAAAAY to much.

Last night, I took my nephew (4yo) to a matinee and resisted the theater popcorn. A win on 2 fronts 1) saved at least $15 at concession and 2) kept poundage from my waistline.

Two days ago, I quit smoking.
Today I ate from the pantry instead of going with a craving. This saved me money in buying stuff and gas, it lowered the temptation to pick up a pack, and it kept me off spotty roads due to our "blizzard"

Congrats on quitting smoking!! I didn't really save money, but the following improved my life I had surgery on Tuesday, and ended up being called to come in early (another patient didn't show up). In my rush to get ready, I broke the curtain rod on my stand-alone shower and can't fix it. Got a new one yesterday (I shouldn't have been driving but needed a new rod) and today I offered DS $5 to clean the shower. I'm throwing away the old curtain and have a new liner ready to be cut down to size waiting in the closet that I bought some time ago (ok, that part saved money...) The $5 is worth me not having to scrub anything myself!

This is interesting..
I had a Pharmacy tech a number of years ago that did smoke up to 2 pack a day.. I pulled out my HP old 12C financial Calculator to produce the results on investing this money in our 403B.. That would be matched up to 3%... by the Hospital. I told her that the amount would be before tax and she would not lose much on her check.. I gave her the results and she had a few colourfull words to tell me about me and my calculator.
I told here she could borrow 50% of her total assets that are vested and pay herself interest. Now she has retired and added that this also saved her $25/ month in health insurance cost.. Never missed a dime but gets a retirment income of two times what she saved every month in her account like clock work. ALL FOR STOP SMOKING...
THAT WAS 15 to 25 years ago,

I went shopping for food and only bought one thing that wasn't raw fruit or raw vegetable. I got about 15lbs of oranges, 5lbs grapefruit, 2 kinds of apples, a bunch of bananas, stuff for a salad. I was hungry and candy bars were only 34cents but I didn't buy any, I did eat two bananas before I got home but still not as bad as candy. When I am being good I start in produce and fill the cart about half full with whatever is on sale that I like

I quit 30 years ago so have saved a small fortune in the cost of cigarettes, lighters, burned clothing and health care. If you smoke even colds are worse than non smokers. A smoker my age coughs weeks longer and harder until he can't breathe at all and the colds are miserable. I have a cold now and only have taken about two cough drops and one night time cold medicine and don't really feel bad. I have needed to drink a lot of hot tea to keep my chest warm in side but I like tea. I will eat more citrus fruit the next week or two but really don't feel bad.

I bought "broken" king crab legs for $3.99 per pound which is a STEAL for king crab. I bought 7 pounds, and the bonus is that most of the pieces are not broken up much. I plan to steam them with potatoes, corn, sausage, and shrimp. Mmmmmm ;D

Any sickness when smoking is way worse. I started at a not so fun time in life, getting to better times thanks for the encouragement. Today I brought bagels with me to work for lunch. I was very thankful when I got to work and the parking lot resembeled and ice skating ring.

Thought that $54 was too much to spend on ink cartridges, and found it on-line for $8

On New Year's Day I dropped the lid to my brand new crockpot while cleaning it, and broke the plastic handle. Why do they put plastic on them?
Anyway, after several convos and e-mails to the company (and still no replacement handles found) I went to Lowe's yesterday and found a stainless handle that fit it well.
cost of handle = $1.61 (on clearance!) cost of usable crockpot = PRICELESS!

i love this thread! what i did (or will do) today: - joined the local ymca, using the registration fee promotion waiver promotion
- accepted teaching a class that i hadn't planned on teaching to earn extra money towards paying off our car
- bought a bag of almonds, on sale, to keep at my desk for when i get hungry therefore preventing the temptation of the vending machine
tangent--great job with the smoking! i am not a smoker but my father is and i see how he struggles with quitting. keep up the great work!

Actually, saved my mom some money. Told her about a newspaper promotion that would lower her current subscription price, and secured it for her. She now pays half of what she was paying. It felt good to help her out.

Saved some money by repotting a plant using potting soil I remembered that I already had instead of running by the nursery to get some-also reused a pot.

LOL. I just posted over on EE about picking up free oatmeal at Mickey D's on my way home from dropping DS off at the bus stop this morning. I had to drain it because it was too runny (I like thick oatmeal) and have NEVER had fruit on oatmeal before, but it was so good!

This morning we were out of our usual breakfast staples. Instead of running to the store, we ate oatmeal...and survived. Love it, Wrongside!!! WTG!!! I need to work some more on stretching my own family's food "comfort zone".

I stopped using tobacco and am going to cut back on alcohol consumption. Realized how much it was costing me (and my health) and neither one is worth it.
