raeoflyte I am sorry co workers are not taking it seriously. Most at my work place are taking it seriously. Today was my dad's service. Most people were masked and respected distance. One cousin who is a nurse (do not know if does mainly admiration at this point) was not wearing a mask. Said he was not afraid. One guy who can talk your ear off was not wearing his mask properly. He did not respect distance . Immediately after he shook my hand I pulled out the hand sanitizer. We did not get together at a restaurant after the service because none of my siblings was comfortable with eating with people outside our household.

My office and company have been great in allowing wfh, but none of them take it seriously. There have been dozens of calls with people in the office, not masked or distanced. My boss has been traveling for work, and was contacted that she has a confirmed contact with a positive case on Wednesday. She emailed that she wouldnt make it to the office party tonight (indoor restaurant), but a dozen reply alls from people telling her to come, she can't be contagious, no one cares, and she is checking individually on peoples comfort level which I'm sure means she's going. She isn't fully vaccinated and even if no one from our office cares...wtf?!? I wasn't going regardless but I just can't get over it. Some people are idiots. You can be contagious two days before you show symptoms.

Ok, I don't remember if I mentioned the issue with my 8 year olds soccer team yet. It's outside, they're supposed to be masked and distanced on the sidelines. DH found most kids and parents were not at last week's practice. The coach is the same as last fall, and I'm guessing much of the team is the same/parents, who were embarrassingly assholeish about masking at one of the games early last fall (and then the people in charge got after them). DH texted the coach about lack of masks, coach right out of the gate told the parents he wasn't going to enforce masking at practices. DH sent an email to the org. to see if we can switch teams. We were not pleased to get this coach again in the first place. Forget the new variants that are more contagious for kids-- what kind of message does it send to the kids to not follow the rules of the game if you don't like them? I don't know if I've updated anywhere. I sent a follow-up message via a different channel on Monday or Tuesday, asking for TT to be able to switch teams. They never replied, but I guess they went to the practice fields Wednesday and talked to the coach. He texted my DH telling him that masks would be worn at practices and people in charge will be walking the fields to ensure compliance. We were practicing on our own instead of dealing with the antimaskers, so we weren't there. The org also sent a mass email today saying that, and once again requiring a questionnaire before each practice and game. I don't know if it was all because of our complaints, but it's an improvement. Still wish we could've switched teams. Parents are still probably going to be a bunch of covidiots outside of play time, which means that much more likely to spread it to their kid.

My state is not doing well. In my county, cases have been back to thr holiday numbers. I can’t find any firm statistics to back this up but it does seem like it’s the kids getting it now. In the last 3 weeks, I’ve had 5 family members get Covid. 4 were kids and 1 one was the mom of three of them. My MIL’s stylist just got it from her kids (all four kids got it, not sure which one started it).
Our ICU is back to 82% capacity.
Our positivity rate was 12.5% but today it’s 11%. Definitely not good

I am really appreciative that there hasn't been pressure to go to the office, but I am seriously questioning people's judgment and what it means for my career. I had been considering going up for a meeting to meet some new managers, masked even though I'd be the only one, but that's off.

The whole Covid reporting has taught me a lot about the county I live in, and confirmed some things I thought were true. For instance there are 3 ethinicities that make up almost all of our population, that was something I knew. The largest group is of Asian descent, did not know that, followed by caucasian and hispanic. My reason for not realizing that Asians (American or not) were the largest group is that I moved here after a decade in SE Asia so it all looked very "white" to me When they started vaccinating they kept reporting that especially the hispanic group was under represented in getting shots, so they opened special clinics in their neighborhoods. But now they have started to report %vaccinated broken down not just by ethnicity but also by certain age groups. I am not sure why this was never part of the reporting but the main reason they were under represented was that they were not yet eligible by age. Just reading the reports you can see plain as day that the area is becoming more diverse as the younger part of the population, you know the ones that have kids, is more diverse. Also here in nerd central there are definitely more young men than women. We make up for that by outliving the men though , and on, and on. All in all I now know a lot more about my county. Live and learn

They'd be the first ones I'd call back into the office.

My boss was exposed while traveling to other offices out of state. There isn't pressure to go in yet if youre not comfortable, but more and more are going in for the meetings, sitting right next to each other, and absolutely no masks. I got my first shot as soon as it was opened up for general public, and 2nd shot on Monday so I know they aren't all vaccinated. I'm thinking Ill have to start going in for meetings next month though which I still don't love since they won't wear masks. And its a 90 minute commute 1 way, and I definietly don't want to work in the office after the meeting which makes it a hellish day to lose the first 5 hours and have to put in a full day after I get back home.

I returned from my KC-SC road trip yesterday. Fewer local mask mandates so only places that had corporate mandates (Hilton chain, Subway, grocery stores) enforced masking. Convenience stores? Forget it. I try not to get too riled up- if there's no law requiring it then it's a personal choice, and it's really a short-term exposure unless there's a long line of people waiting, but I haven't bought anything in convenience stores on the last 2 road trips. I stock up at grocery stores instead.
Johnson, County, KS is ticking up again. 14-day average positivity rate (new positives/new tests) was as high as 30.9% in January, got down to 8.9% in March and it's up to 10.8%. Not sure what's driving that since vaccines are plentiful but it's worrying.

We have got very few cases in School at the moment. The kids have been wearing masks in lessons and doing the little test strips twice a week. Its still restrictive, they are in their bubbles... all desks facing the front, sanitiser extra cleaning and staggered lunches. But hey, its working. Now we just need to get them vaccinated so they are not a reservoir .... and booster the vulnerable groups in September.

Our case counts are staying pretty low. And thankfully, the high-risk people have mostly been vaccinated. My husband and I are fully vaccinated. The health department has switched to doing walk-in clinics, so that people who can’t or won’t schedule appointments can still get vaccinated.
But since Covid never really got that bad out here, there are way too many vaccine skeptics running around. At least people are still pretty good about masks. The majority of people in my area were wearing them even before it was mandated. They lifted the mask mandate, but they really didn’t. School kids still have to wear them, and private businesses can and do require them. Any gatherings over 50 people still have a mask mandate. But since there are only 550 ICU beds for a population of 3 million people, it won’t take much for things to get out of control out here.
I was able to get my 52-year-old husband vaccinated a full month before I could get my 90-year-old mother in Massachusetts vaccinated. I can’t believe those people. What a shit show. Massachusetts is swimming in the brains and tax money and they still can’t put together a decent website or scheduling app.

There have been enough cases originating from our office and I'm guessing that party that the county is now specifically tracking us. Coupled with this article I feel like we should lock ourselves away again. Dh is even worrying about the summer outdoor activities I have the kids signed up for. I'm clinging to those as doctor ordered from ds endocrinologist, but it is overwhelming to think about. www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/05/03/993141036/children-now-account-for-22-of-new-u-s-covid-cases-why-is-that

Everyone has to make their own choices. I will say my pulmonary doctor has been saying he feels outside activities are fairly safe.

The jury is still out on indoor activities with mixed vaccinated and unvaccinated people, although I think the risk is low for vaccinated people with intact immune systems. I would be wary if you are unvaccinated, but at this point, if you are unvaccinated it is a choice.

Dh's nick name is Mr. Worst Case Scenario guy for a reason. I feel better about outdoor activities than the "outdoor" backyard family gatherings that inevitably end up moving between the house and yard.

There is a Covid firestorm outside our borders and it feels to me we should not hold onto vaccines for people who are unwilling to get vaccinated (even though they may change their mind at some point) while daily thousands upon thousands of people are dying?

They are going to have to quarantine for 2 weeks when they get home though, aren’t they? My 83 year old MIL just got her first vaccine last month. She doesn’t get her second until July. AFAIK, she is the only one of my ILs on the west side of Canada who has been immunized. The rest are scattered in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

Yes and they knew that when they left. After spending the last 3 1/2 weeks with MIL and all the ruckus, they will be quite happy to be quarantined for 14 days. They also had to have negative PCR Covid tests.
They do qualify now, but that didn't happen until after they were already here and had 1st vaccine. They also didn't like the 4 month wait to get the 2nd vaccine.
Niece in law is teaching on line this summer, both at the UofT and at Michigan.
University of Toronto still doesn't have a plan for fall as to online only or in-person. Before the big outbreak in Toronto and Ontario, they had announced they would be in-person. At faculty meeting while kids were here, they are leaning to online and believe they need to let students know before July 1 so that the students don't sign apartment leases when they don't need to be in Toronto.
Would you believe these two professors have not set foot inside their offices, any classroom or any other building at the University of Toronto?

Just heard from BF. He's scheduled to fly to Colorado tomorrow to visit his DD, DSIL and 3 grandchildren. The oldest child, in kindergarten, just learned that a classmate has tested positive for COVID. So much for the "kids don't get COVID" mentality. He's really bummed. He's and DSIL are fully vaccinated, DD has had one shot. They have a 4-year old and an 18-month old as well. Granddaughter shows no signs of COVID and of course they'll have her tested. They've also been careful about masking.
It blows up a lot of the plans they had for outings. I told BF that it might be good for him to be there since they're going to be mostly at home with the kids. According to the CDC, neither he nor DSIL would have to quarantine so maybe he can help with errands. Still, it's lousy timing.
We're not out of this yet.

Hmmm, I’m only 61 and healthy, live in Massachusetts, and I have been fully vaccinated since April 15th. I had no problem scheduling either vaccination. In fact, the hospital my primary care doc works for reached out to me to set up my appointments through their portal in the middle of Msrch. 90 year olds like your mother were at the very front of the line in December and January in Massachusetts. I’m not sure why you had trouble getting her an appointment but since no state has ever vaccinated all of its residents in such a short time frame before I’m going to assume it was due to early system issues (which we should have all expected) AND distribution issues caused by the Trump administration. I actually think Massachusetts did a decent job of making the vaccine available as quickly as possible in a reasonable order of priority once funding and vaccines became available under the Biden administration.

It’s a conservative meme that all states screwed this up so they do not look bad. Only 8 states have given at least one shot to 70% of adults: Maine, NH, VT, Massachusetts, RI, CT, NJ, and Hawaii. See the trend. The other end of the spectrum are a number of southern states. They should have screwed this up as badly as Massachusetts
