Epidemiologists and other doctors in the state are convinced passing a law that made in person schooling mandatory is what is behind the increase in our numbers. The schools and the governor says the cases are not related to cases in kids. How can they not be? The kids don't live in a bubble and never see anyone else. They have to go to school. Many schools have dropped wearing masks. Those school districts have had increases in cases. Wonder why?
Youth sports are a source of exposure but that has been largely uncontrolled in this state. My nephew coached youth soccer last summer and he put in covid protocols himself. He said once he got through to the kids and parents his rules were mandatory, they were followed.
He's starting a new program at a high school that's been in a cooperative agreement to play with another team. It's the kids he coached the last two summers in the rec league. The parents went to that school's AD and demanded their own program because there were more kids from this school than the school they were playing for on the team. The parents also wanted my nephew. He had to go through the process of applying but he got the job. Every one knows it's a process to build a team from scratch. This year it's a co-ed team. His summer rec league team is co-ed, so these kids are used to playing together.

Our numbers are creeping up, but I have to believe it's mostly spreading through unvaccinated people that are taking advantage of the state opening up more. I drive by some bars/restaurants now and they are always busy.
At our school, we have a saliva screening program that seems to be pretty good at detecting cases. If you test positive, you have to have it confirmed by a PCR test. To get more adoption into the program, they require it for participation in any after-school activity and they waive quarantines for travel if you sign-up.

I was very disappointed in myself this weekend. We booked a private archery class for just our family thinking it would be a relatively safe indoor activity. It must have been held during an open range time because more and more people kept coming in and shockingly, its not much of a masking crowd. I should have said we need to leave once I noticed how full it was. I guess I was worried about letting everyone down, but ds gets super angry at the anti-maskers and I should have realized he was ready to leave.
We did head out a few minutes early and I checked the site thinking I must have missed something when booking, but it doesn't include that your lesson will be on a full range. I emailed them and let them know I wished I had that info during booking and that we couldn't return until my youngest was vaccinated. Not really expecting a reply as I don't think we're their target customer.

The Texas Rangers are opening their stadium at full capacity for their season opener, but will require masks except when eating/drinking. With less than 20% of Texans vaccinated, I would consider it a risk although it's outdoors.

Not sure it would be good for her to have bow and arrows in her hands in the situation you describe.

I made the guy writing up my order for the car recall notice put his mask over his nose before I would talk to him. There were 3 guys and none had their mask over their nose.

I live in Michigan. Have you seen our recent case counts or looked at our 7-day trend lines for new cases and hospitalizations? We are going to exceed our winter spike. I got my first shot of Moderna two weeks ago. Despite that protection, when I saw KN95s being sold today, I picked up two packages. I know that they are probably fakes, but I just don't care! My partner is completely unvaccinated and overweight. I recommended that he wear one when he gets his shot and left them in the glove compartment
It's gotten really, really bad here and I don't want to whine about it. I just want the rest of you to take a bit of time out of your day and study the numbers where you live. These things can take off very quickly and it is shockingly easy to not hear about them.

Texas Rangers game photos show the stadium completely packed and not many masks.

You want to take heed of what is happening in Chile. They have had a good vaccine roll out "Some 20 per cent of the South Amercian nation’s 19 million population have now had two doses – a figure second only to Israel – in a programme that has been widely praised around the world. But the country has, in the last week, also recorded 49,542 new Covid-19 cases – the highest weekly levels since the start of the pandemic. Intensive care beds are said to be scare in major cities, while reports suggest one hospital in Valparaiso has run out of space in its morgue and is now storing bodies in the hallways." www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/chile-virus-surge-shows-vaccine-rollout-may-not-end-lockdowns-says-chris-whitty/ar-BB1flesN?ocid=uxbndlbingIt could be a new variant.....it could be the vaccines they used. or.......It could be that they opened up too quickly and thought that it was all over when it wasn't.

I wish it said how many of the new cases were people who had been fully and partially vaccinated and if theyre still masking. They're a long ways from herd immunity, I would think the spike cpuld be unvaccinated people being too careless. At least I hope thats what it is.

The "UK" variant hit a daycare somewhere in my county. 21 kids and staff were infected, along with 14 other family members of the kids/staff. The latest public health order says kids under 5 don't have to wear masks..so..this should be fun.

The Catholic high school where area kids go to school has an outbreak. No idea of which variant.
There is also news here of a bar in Illinois that held a private event. So far 46 people have been infected. 17 were not at the event, including one person in a nursing home who is hospitalized. That surprised me because most nursing home residents here have been vaccinated. I don't know if Illinois did it that way or if that person declined to be vaccinated.
It's pretty amazing to watch which counties are having problems filling their vaccine appointments (generally speaking the very red counties) and which counties where people are driving to those counties to get vaccinated (from the larger cities, which tend to be more blue)

I am very worried about MI’s spike in caseload. Apparently variant driven and I wish the rest of the country would pay attention and adjust accordingly. Multiple sources are rumbling about kids sports causing outbreaks, and I am not at all convinced that the previous studies concluding schools are reasonably safe can be applied to the new more infectious variants. MD has spiked statewide and plateaued at a level about double what we had gotten down to when they decided to lift most restrictions. MD numbers are noticeably higher than DC or VA, but our immediate county lifted far fewer restrictions and currently has the lowest caseload in the general area. Governor is blaming travel instead of lifted restrictions @theotherme It’s also possible that the nursing home resident was just one of the unlucky 5-10% that the vaccine didn’t completely protect. I hope she comes out OK.

One of the county nurses said the spike will come in 10 to 14 days when the results from spring break and too many large Easter gatherings show up.

I just saw a post on facebook saying our local hospital is once again for in a state of internal disaster. Funny I didn't hear anything from my friend who works there this time. I think part of it is we were low after Christmas while most everyone else was high. We were more shut down around the holidays than most other states. Doesn't make the current state of affairs any better, but it might have supplied more Covid virgins for the new variants hitting us now. 😕 They are vaccinating like crazy now, so hopefully we'll start seeing some results from that in the numbers soon. Hopefully, it's already starting and Saturday was the peek for new cases.

California got so much grief for over-reacting - but looking at this map, it appears they did a darn good job. But those red states aren't looking so good.

I read today that the 7 day positivity rate for the state is 1.7%, for my county it is 1%.
I hope that we don't move too fast from here. We won't if we keep following the state imposed rules but there are so many who just want it to be done with and not all of them use common sense.

What is going on in PA? The case numbers are as high as they were in November. This is depressing, even with almost everyone I know getting the vaccine.

I know sporting events opened a few weeks ago (I think the Penguins announced 25% capacity?) - no idea if that is related. We stayed home for Easter with just my vaccinated parents. I'm so class to the vaccine that I'm taking no risks.

The current Houston/Harris County positivity rate is 8.4%. But Gov Abbott says open it up, no more mask mandates, no vaccine mandates.

My county's positivity rate is increasing. It's back up over 5% and my email from the county puts us back in the high risk segment.

Well, some of the rural schools in my state are ditching masks. Which seems to be the obvious choice when we know the variant spreads super quickly among kids. A four the rural counties have an 8-10% positivity rate, as of this morning.
The spread rates are back up over 1, and ICUs in my county are at 91% capacity. We got a note from the principal at the girl's school to be careful about bringing covid into the schools.

Same thing is happening in the rural schools here. Most of our cases are in the 18-24 age range. Next is 15-18
A high school and elementary school in Iowa City (home of the University of Iowa), have over 700 kids in quarantined and have closed classroom. The superintendent says it's from sports, spring break vacations and classroom spread. Only about 10 staff members have it.

Interesting development at the church blood drive yesterday. They now have a camera with a device that takes your temperature; you get up close enough that your face fills the frame and it announces Temperature is normal". One woman hadn't put her mask on yet and the voice said, "Please wear a mask". I tried it myself- yeah, if I took off my mask and stood there it told me my temperature was normal and please wear a mask. Creepy! The "we-don't-need-no-stinkin-mask" types tend to hang in convenience stores- I drove to Des Moines from KC last night and stopped at one looking for some stuff for dinner. Signs outside said "Mask required" and there was a guy without one inside. I pointed it out as I left without buying anything.
