OMG. Almost 9000 cases in Florida alone today. They will likely break 10,000 at some point unless they stop testing.

We look like crap compared to Europe. Although I agree that is the best comparison as those cultures are the most "like us", we can't deny that chart leaves off literally hundreds of countries. More than half the world's population is missing / hidden. We need to be careful with our "facts". And there is the fact that we suck compared to Europe, but we don't do any other comparisons (at least not on that chart). Not to be too picky but last time I looked neither Canada not Australia are part of Europe and they are used for comparison purposes. Even worse. We just picked select random countries. Not the whole EU. Just countries that make us look as bad as possible. Again - a disingenuous comparison that hurts credibility. If we expect the Donald to be honest, we also have to be clear.

I don't know what happened to the graph but I have to admit that I am chilled by the similar slopes of the two upswings on the US national graph.
The first time that our cases went up at a shocking rate was during a time when we did not test, could not test, restricted testing, and rationed testing.
Now we are seeing the same terrifying growth. Problem is, we do test now and the new cases in states that have increasing cases are counterbalanced by decreasing new cases in the states that were hit hard early in the epidemic and are now seeing decreasing new cases.
I wonder what these curves would look like if we excluded the states that were hit early and hard but are now seeing cases decrease. I suspect the curves would probably look as bad or worse than what we saw in March and early April.
I agree - I'd like to see a curve with the states on the decline, states on the rise, and the whole US. That would be quite the visual. Or, group states with similar reopening rules/schedules/mask usage: how is each group trending?

One of the countries in that graph is Italy, which, for the longest time had the worst outbreak on the planet. Not like the graph was cherry picking. Now, since they appear to have been at the same or worse level of infection as we are, and you look at where they and we are today, it is not flattering. Not a perfect comparison by any means, due to size of the country, population, health care system, but they sure as hell ahve done an excellent job in tamping down infections

They just changed places with the countries where there was a significant outbreak. About half the states have an increase in numbers, and about 10 have decreasing numbers at present.

I heard something interesting on NPR yesterday- Covid hotspots seem to be linked to events with a lot of people inside an air conditioned building while not wearing masks. Like parties, church services, bars and restaurants. However, if you are outside in a hot and humid area but wearing a mask, transmission is low. They discovered this when following participants in BLM events- being so many people crowded together they expected high transmission rates, but that didn’t happen, because most people wore masks, and it was hot. So if Trump would hold his rallies at open air baseball stadiums and required everyone to wear a mask, not many people would get sick, even if it was crowded. Something he should consider. I think it's people density AND the lack of masks that's the culprit. I caught part of an NPR show that was covering questions about the "reopening" and people going back to their highrise office buildings. The jist of it was the office buildings HVAC systems generally don't spread virus - like the flu (or colds) to office workers - it's other office workers doing the spreading. Also, I haven't really heard/read anything from "Asia Pacific" Big Cities where people (like us) live and work in high rise buildings that leads me to believe that it's spreading via ventilation systems. I think you need to be directly breathing in other people's "used" air for a period of time. Remember, we really haven't seen stores becoming hotspots or "transmission centers". You and a bunch of other people MIGHT get ecoli from the packages of Romaine you all bought from the same store on the same Saturday... but it seems odds are pretty good you won't come home with Covid19 from a quick trip thru the grocery store (and if everyone is wearing a mask - it's even less likely). That isn't to say the store workers aren't more exposed than the shoppers. I haven't seen anything that links a local outbreak of covid19 to everyone having spent time at a store (where you go in, shop, and leave in a short period of time).

Hindsight, we probably should have stayed open until we reached a certain level. We closed when there were hardly any cases and the hospitals were totally empty. We used up everyone's patience, resources and willingness to stay home. If we had been under a suggested order, the economy could have stayed somewhat open, and when we hit a certain level, we could have shut it down - or maybe pulled back slowly. But now that we have been closed, and are now open, closing again will be a shit show.

And actually caring about a plan that is workable would have been nice. But we elected the most incompetent individual we could have leading us in this disaster

47000, we will see 50000 soon. Wonder when Florida hits 10,000. How much pain do they need before they make masks mandatory. Wonder how many tourists are going to go to Florida this summer?

Pence had the first CV news conference in two months and after congratulating trump for what a wonderful job he’s done, pence reminded everyone to follow the cdc rules and named them, but left out wearing masks. When a reporter asked later why he didn’t remind people to wear masks, pence did a little song and dance about personal liberty.
Such a good little puppet Pence is. You almost don’t see trumps hand up his ass making his mouth move,
I wonder who the history books will rate as the biggest trump enabler, pence, Barr or Stephen Miller? Oops left off guiliani. Bet Chris Christi is counting his lucky stars he got kicked off the trump bus right when it left the station, or he’d be on that list too.

So, now even suggesting someone wear a mask is an affront to liberty. I suggest people fuck themselves.

Wearing a mask isn't about losing control Its about taking control......... and taking a positive step to look after yourself and your family.

Thanks, that's closer to what I was envisioning (when I could see it, the site kept freezing on me). But 50 states is still hard to manage in my mind all at once (at least they used the same scale - some other groupings have each state with a unique scale). What I'm thinking about is a graph of US case numbers, with the bars broken into different colors for the states or regions having a big influence. Kind of like the graphs that stack active/recovered/deaths. NY obviously overwhelmed the early numbers, but has fallen back now. So you'd see how much of the U.S. totals were NY early, and how much that has receded while other regions increased.

I think you can probably do that here: coronavirus.1point3acres.com/enI just keep a constant watch on the raw numbers myself. Nevada is looking particularly bad today, (I wish this site took state population into account), and of course Florida is an absolute shit show.

the US is a raging inferno of stupid.
the case numbers are going absolutely nuts, and the death rates will follow.
this providential thinking has to stop.
wear your fucking masks. socially distant. stop behaving like ignorant children. start caring about how your behavior infects others.
_END RANT_
in a few hours, we are going to break 10M cases worldwide and 500k deaths. this is a global problem, and every human on this planet has to take this shit seriously, or it is going to kill millions upon millions. we are 3-6 months away from having a cure for this thing, IF we get one. this will be as bad as the Spanish Flu if we continue behaving like we did during the Spanish Flu.

The virus is not going away, it never was here in the first place. It is all a hoax perpetrated by the Dems to steal trumps throne presidency. Makes one wonder why Pence doesn't go to Florida though. He must really be hurting deSantis' feelings...
