With 23,000 Americans dead and millions without a paycheck, President Donald Trump dimmed the lights in the White House briefing room, fired up a misleading propaganda video and boiled over. In one of the most unchained presidential tantrums ever captured on television, Trump's Monday display flouted every notion of calm leadership by the commander in chief in a crisis. www.cnn.com/2020/04/14/politics/donald-trump-coronavirus-governors-economy/index.html25,195.

Targeting Obama, Trump set a standard that came back to haunt himAs is his wont, Donald Trump has spent weeks making the case that his response to the coronavirus pandemic is great -- at least when compared to Barack Obama's response to H1N1 in 2009. In fact, the incumbent president has been quite aggressive on the talking point, throwing around words like "debacle" and "disaster" to describe his predecessor's record. To bolster the point, Trump has pointed to a specific statistic, which he seems to believe drives the larger point home. This was his pitch during a White House press briefing a week ago today: "Take a look at the swine flu. Right? That's H1N1. Take a look at that. And it's not the other way around, by the way. It's H1N1. Take a look -- you know what I mean by that. Take a look at the swine flu. It was a disaster; 17,000 people died. The other administra- they didn't even know -- it was like they didn't even know it was here." A day later, the Republican repeated the statistic on Twitter, labeling the federal response to H1N1 a "debacle" because "17,000 people died." Complete article here: Targeting Obama, Trump set a standard that came back to haunt himThe current death count as of April 13, 2020 from the Covid-19 in the U.S. is 23,485 and counting. The current death count as of April 14, 2020 from the Covid-19 in the U.S. is 25,239 and counting. Next update April 15.

The current death count as of April 14, 2020 from the Covid-19 in the U.S. is 25,239 and counting. Next update April 15. Now 25,794. I will update my post daily with the new death count. Included in the update will always be trump's Twitter rant about the 17,000. Everyone needs to be reminded of that daily.

And those were likely all infected before we rolled away the stone to get an Easter bunny hop in the numbers.

60k is starting to seem very close to me.
edit: there is no indication that our deaths per day have peaked. none. it looks, to my eye, like we have at least a week, maybe 2, before it does. and again, guessing 3000/day at the peak.
the analysis out of Washington is missing something.
perhaps our "red state problem".

perhaps our "red state problem". I agree I think 60k is the floor, and we are only weeks away from reaching it. i think we will be closer to the 80-90k they first forecast. But what the hell do I know.

Deaths are a lagging statistic

Italy has barely gone down in 4 weeks. Tha seems a littlr strange to me too, but from my cursory floowing of Italy, I thought they had decreased from their peak. Spain seemed to be staying up. But I get a little bleary-eyed from all the information I have to filter.

But I get a little bleary-eyed from all the information I have to filter. Italy only spent 2 days around 900 dead... spent about week around 700-800 but they have been from 500-600 deaths a day for at least 2 weeks now as well... i guess i can't legitimately say barely... it's a 30% decrease from peak, but it doesn't ultimately seem like significant progress. New cases are also still 3000-4000 a day. It just is in no way a bell curve. Its fast up and super slow down.

perhaps our "red state problem". I don't think it is a red-state problem, or an idiot problem. I don't think it's the idiots that are dying. It's the invalids, the inmates, and the essential workers that are getting infected and dying.
It also doesn't help that testing is still very constrained and rationed and slow. Everyone wants to believe that we've sped up testing and that we must be doing some sort of contact tracing but I doubt that we have.
Have you thought a bit about timelines and how effective contact tracing is when it takes at least four days between being infected and possibly showing symptoms and five days to get a test result. Do you remember who you came in contact with nine days ago or fourteen days ago? Even if you had their telephone number and contacted them the second that you got tested, and five days before you got results, would they be willing to self-quarantine themselves and their household on the basis of your symptoms?
Would they be successful at quarantining their entire household and monitoring their own symptoms without help from the health department regarding provisions and thermometers? If they are essential workers, will their employers understand their absence when they can't point to anyone's positive test and absolutely no-one has contacted them about getting tested themselves?
