Spent my lunch two hours (my GAF left a few weeks ago, long story) having lunch w/ a friend then I popped over to the thrift store. I was hoping to find a few small furniture pieces for my deck project, and was disappointed that the few things that might have worked cost as much second hand as the retail things I saved in my online cart. I did pick up 3 decorative knickknack type things. Opposite of decluttering, but oh, well. It balances out the numerous Goodwill trips taken in the past.
For the deck, I'm going for a sort of Asian retreat theme. Bamboo won't survive here, but one of the things saved in my cart is an artificial bamboo mid-sized tree.

I just caught up with reading lots of pages - people are going trough so much stuff, but many of you just keep on going. I wish I could say the same. Spent Friday, Sat, and Sun morning prepping for another disaster (Hurricane Douglas), fell asleep at noon, and woke up at 2 to find it had veered just a little North, but enough so we only had a little rain. This is wonderful, but I just feel (as one of my Mom's friends used to say) like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Just a constant state of tension. My state is doing that re-surging thing, breaking records with 70 new cases in a day. Admittedly a tiny number compared to other states, but we are tiny, and geographically removed so this shouldn't be happening. Crazy to know that people are coming here supposedly on vacation to stay in their hotel rooms for 2 weeks. For sure they are not staying in their rooms the whole time. I am still working from home, but just had my hours cut to 20, but that's enough to keep my health insurance, so that's good. And maybe I'll get a little more done around the house (insert hysterical laughter here ). Empress - so sorry to hear of your loss Ruhk - I can relate to making a wrong decision in an effort to move forward, but those blocked moves always teach us the most. I feel your tension, too. Hopefully we will both get out of the rocking-chair room soon! Debt - hope your wrist is much, much better! Congrats to DS3 on his degree honors, it reflects a lot of hard work, I'm sure. Startsmart - great progress! I am curious as to the color you chose - feel like I'm seeing a lot of gray lately, but I still like light colors and off-white. Did you say what you are using? Nidena - I got to the website! Looking very professional - I will respond to you there as I have questions. The O - it made me happy to hear you got to see baby. Hope your sister doesn't get too sick. It just bowled me over to think how little the baby had been out in a car. I can remember using the car as a last resort to get DS to sleep! And having to do lots of planning/timing so he wouldn't fall asleep in the car (and wreck my night later). Finnime - hope you are all better! Iggy - I'm with you on the GAF, although I had to google it. Chloe - to me you are the planner queen, so I can't wait to hear what you decide. I heard about a Google-based app that can go in different directions, but I probably won't go there until the post-its run out. Looks like it's time to change my wireless batteries again. Please blame any typos or mistakes on that! At least I know I have stock, thanks to Hurricane Douglas! Stay safe and healthy, everybody!

Iggy - the deck sounds fantastic! I love a good theme and cannot wait to unpack my hammock and outdoor lanterns and all the planters... I'm curious though, what does GAF stand for? hitenney - I didn't mention the color but it's a dark, dark gray. In my last house I had Behr Dolphin Finn throughout the living room/hallway/kitchen and while I liked it, it was more of a beachy vibe. It did the job to sell the house and the new buyers didn't change any of the paint when they moved in. This house is much bigger and older so I'll be experimenting more. Today we're supposed to be cloudy but no rain or lightening so I am hoping the truck bed is dry enough for moving some boxes! According to my spreadsheet I have 125 boxes left in the POD and all the stuff hanging out on TOP of the boxes, 2 nightstands, a few small tables and 3 or 4 rugs. I may move the rugs into the garage as a barrier to the water coming in (the base of the garage wall where it meets the cement isn't sealed ) . My goal is to get 50 boxes moved to the garage today. Oh, and there's no electricity in the garage so my plans of moving boxes at night didn't happen as I couldn't see where I was going! Today: Farmer's Market / Grocery Store Finish touching up living room paint Move 50 boxes to garage Move empty boxes upstairs Set up desk

I'm not Iggy but GAF is - Give A Fuck. or if you're a nerd like me, it's a brand of roofing shingles. I kept trying to figure out what roof shingles had to do with anything! Today's plan is - wander around aimlessly while waiting for the funeral home to call me. I am going to take a pair of bar stools and regular stools to the local Savers. I'm sure I could try to sell them, could use the money, but I have seriously no interest in dealing with it. They were free from my next door neighbor. Other than that, haven't a clue. At least I'm going back to work tomorrow. Even if I'm not wholly productive, I won't be here.

I need to work on books, maybe I can make myself this week. I need to. I don't have to do that because my husband stopped letting me buy "real" books about ten years ago. I can have as many on my Kindle as I want; they just can't be all over the house.

I've straightened up my home desk and at least sorted the Shite!Pile while drinking my coffee. Taking my husband in for an esophageal procedure today, so not much else will get done.
debthaven , how's your arm?
TheOtherMe , have you heard from your "canadian" nephew lately? Is their quarantine up?
empress of self-improvement , more hugs for you
startsmart , is there no electricity in the garage at all or is it just broken at the moment?
Iggy aka IG , no bamboo! I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad for you--LOL!

They are in quarantine until Sunday. They arrived 2 weeks ago on this coming Saturday.
They seem to be doing fine but would like to get to know their area of Toronto. At this point, they can only have groceries delivered.
He did contact me to pay the person who cleaned their house after they left so it could be on the market. From the pictures, she did a great job. I realize the day I was there, boxes were all over the place so it was a mess.
They have already paid me back. Like me, they pay their bills online and their check book is in the van, which is also in quarantine.

I am slowly accomplishing things but not feeling like I am seeing the results. Most are small things.
*I am caught up on dishes and laundry.
*Several items were discarded this week and a few more have entered the donation box. Just started box #3 so once it has enough then I will call for a pickup and get all of those items out of the garage.
*Leftovers tonight and I have pulled tomorrow's meal out of the freezer to begin defrosting in the fridge. May be enough for two meals from that container.
*Continuing the process of crafting each day for the most part. Recently I painted two small flowerpots and finished several pairs of earrings, a necklace set and started a few other more complex projects.
*Continuing to add items to the Etsy store. Adding items on even numbered days and trying to write descriptions and take pictures on odd numbered days. Still have more items to add and trying to be consistent with working on it. Neglected it in the past but it now gives me something to do each day and as I mentioned before I think that online shopping will continue even after things open up some more. Plus a lot of what I do are one-of-a-kind pieces.
*Texted my handyman this morning as I discovered a small leak.
* Balanced the checkbook. I use excel and compare to the bank's record. Had to find the typo of a penny.
Ending this now before I lose it.

startsmart -- I love the gray walls in my house. For me it is the perfect neutral color. Mine are more of a light/medium gray than a dark gray. Glad to see that you are continuing to make progress. TheOtherMe -- Those two weeks went by fast. Hoping that your DN will be able to sell his old home quickly and without hassle. debthaven -- Hope that you are continuing the healing process. Congratulations to your DS for all of his accomplishments especially during this last semester. empress of self-improvement -- Remember it is one day at a time. Sometimes it is one hour at a time. Glad that you are returning to work this week as it will help to structure your day. I am sure that I had other comments but poof - i lost them.

Chloe - there was never electrical ran to the garage 🙄 I’m finding that the previous owners piece-mealed a lot of “upgrades” and the finishing is not that great. Lots to do!
GAF - that makes sense! I kept thinking “great aunt... frida?”
23 boxes done already which makes about halfway to my goal. The small stuff that needs to come in the house is almost more annoying but I’m slowly getting there.

That's the worst part: Discovering all the band-aids that were installed as fixes and having to get them fixed correctly. Like--I can't remember if I posted this already--the washer drains into a sink which drains into the sump cavity. Not good. I'm gonna have a plumber come out in Sept to have everything routed to the correct plumbing.

Thanks Knee Deep in Water Chloe my wrist is better but it's still sore and weak. I can barely hold anything with that hand. Patience, I guess. I have been bummed because the new planner at Job 1 COMPLETELY messed up my schedule. They finally started correcting it today. It's now only 1/3 complete, but at least it's not wrong. I'm also worried about the amount of hours I'm doing next Sem, but too late now. Plus after losing 4-5K because of Covid, I need the money. The good news is, they revamped the program and there's MUCH less marking. Thank Gd I gave up 15h at Job 2! I'll be going in 5 days in Sem 1, but no crazy long days like 2 years ago. It'll go down to 4 days in Sem 2. I can retire in 18 months. I don't know if I will, but if I don't, I WILL slow down. This is DEFINITELY my LAST crazy fall semester! Today I had my hair cut and colored, had a beauty treatment, and went to the bottle bank. We're watching E again tomorrow, and the cleaner comes back from her vacation.

nidea - I know exactly what you mean! Previous owners were DIY-ers who didn't do a lot well. Like, every faucet has swapped hot and cold faucets, despite the fact the lines are literally bright blue and bright red.
debthaven - good luck with the wrist strengthening! I always think I'm a patient person until I'm healing slowly or my internet slows down. Then the truth is revealed!
Well, I'm glad I did two big truck loads early in the day (finishing about 2pm) because it started to rain really fast. I have about 80 boxes left in the POD, plus a bit of random stuff but it's really going fast now. I also printed a simple version of my box tracking sheet for the garage so I can remember what stays in the garage for now and what needs to come in the house.
I'm also hiring a landscape company today that will make a full yard plan for me including what plants to put in and when, hardscaping, planting guides, etc. I'm very excited about it! While I'll still do the actually buying, digging and planting, it's so helpful to have a solid plan from an expert and not just "wing it" for a couple years.

I am having the window in my living room and my bedroom replaced. Picked everything out and made down payment yesterday. The installer was here yesterday. He discovered I have a bird's nest in my fireplace vent. He said he will get that down when he installs the windows.
I am getting Pella Windows, with shades in between the panes of glass. My living room window has the same cheap curtains I had in my last apartment and I have lived here 11 years this week. They are terribly faded by the sun.
Lucy has done a number on the pleated shades in the bedroom, so I am doing the same thing in there.
These are triple paned. I currently have double pane windows and the seal is broken on one of them.
Windows will be here in 4-5 weeks. Installer said they will be in the same week they arrive.
Since I can't get anybody to call me back about staining the deck, I am putting that off until next spring.
I will call the guy who said he would do the concrete in front of the house next week as he told me he could not get to until at least August.

You've made such amazing progress in such a short time startsmart ! I think hiring someone for the garden plans is a brilliant idea! How exciting TheOtherMe !!! My dream is double-glazing but at 18K it's not going to happen. My sister got 50% off her new deck in LI, NY by having them do it in late fall/winter, on their schedule. They'd come whenever they could, depending on weather/other work. She was fine with that since the work was all outside. So she got a fabulous new deck at half price. So maybe try them again in late summer/early fall instead of waiting till next spring?!

startsmart - I have a brand-new unused propane lantern I can loan you for the garage! Your progress on the unloading sounds great - also the capacity of the POD sounds amazing! The light was $30.88 at WalMart, but probably cheaper on the mainland. They had sold out of all the battery lanterns by the time I got there. Depending how far the garage is from the house, you may want to buy a heavy-duty 100-ft extension cord and a tripod work light - we used ours so many times, especially back when DH did car repairs, but also for large outside parties. We used it for painting the house before we got lamps up too. The gray sounds very nice.
The Other Me - my work just replaced lots of sliding glass doors with french doors with the blinds inside. Looks so nice! And privacy without curtain/drapes hassles.
Chloe - Douglas was a slight miss! Funny, as it swept away to the Northwest, the trade winds from the South came in with gusts from 40-50 mph. Of course, we had already put the potted plants back out, so those got tossed around a little. My DH is headed in for a tooth-pulling today, but his sister (lives next door) is driving him. Hope your DH has a quick and easy time at his procedure.
Moneysquirrel - I would love to look at your Etsy store. Can you IM, DM (?-don't know the lingo...) the info? I look at Etsy once in awhile, but it's so big and filled with creative stuff I get lost (and jealous!).
Well, better finish my work. I really want to attack the dining table - every time I see something to donate, I put it on there, so I need to get that stuff boxed up and away! Also need to work on filing - talk about shitepiles. Stay well, everybody!

THEO - I will be doing new windows on my place too, hoping to get the first floor done before winter hits but that depends on getting everything from a box store then finding an installer. Most of mine are standard sizes but they are super old with some cracks (double hung). I bet you’ll be excited when those come in!
debthaven - most of it is strategic because the sooner I empty the POD the faster they can come pick it up and I won’t get charged for another month. I am restricting myself and won’t leave town until it’s empty (so no paint runs, no going to the larger grocery store, etc). I have plenty to do here with the supplies I have so it's time to focus!
hitenney - the garage isn’t far from the house so I can absolutely run an extension cord and set up some lights, it’s just not yet a priority! I am hoping that it’ll be an easy process next year to seal up the walls/cement slab, run in some electricity and build out shelves for storage.
I did get my desk set up but several of the screws are bad so I’ll need to get replacements. It’s still stable enough to use so I set up my desktop computer and will start organizing my paperwork and office supplies soon.
I’ve done 43/50 boxes today and I think that if I can get the plastic kitchen tubs in I will meet my goal. I’m torn between doing that and focusing on sorting the boxes and bringing in the ones that need to be unloaded. I’ve unpacked 11 boxes so far today and could easily do a dozen more.
ETA - I split the difference and unpacked another 8 boxes and then brought in the bed supports, another kitchen box and the last nightstand. I am pretty exhausted tonight and worked past the time when most of the restaurants close so I'm going to clean up the kitchen and make some soup and call it a night.

Greeting all!
Just got back from our annual Maine vacation. We had five cottages and 27 people. I'm impressed at how well we did on social distancing. Everyone stayed with their "tribe" and stuck to socializing outside. We skipped the games and activities we usually participate in and kept to swimming, eating and drinking. Great weather for the whole week.
I'm just finishing up the vacation laundry. We rent the same cottage every year and I have dedicated items that I always bring. I'm nearly done cleaning everything we take and repacking the bins. This year they'll go up to one of the empty bedrooms instead of going to the basement.
DH and I are taking the opportunity to replace the floors upstairs while two of the bedrooms are empty. They are wide planks with big gaps between them and they squeak horribly. Not sure what kind of wood, the house is 130 years old. We've gone back and forth about refinishing them for years but that won't solve the squeaking problem. Or the gaps. I'm hoping to be able to salvage the wood since each single plank is 12-15 feet long. We have a friend who does lots of restoration work and would be able to repurpose them. Don't tell DH, but then I'm going after the squeaking stairs and the downstairs floors. Hell, it's only money, we were going to work til we're dead anyway.
Also hiring a painter to do the eaves, the big bay in the front and a couple of windows that we can't reach with any of the ladders we have. DH and his buddies were planning on doing them but I put my foot down and said leave it to the professionals who have the tools and the insurance to handle it. They started to insist but I reminded them that I have a metal elbow from falling off a 6 foot ladder. I am willing to let them install the floors.
And the oil tank sprang a leak and needs to be replaced. Given that it was old when we moved here 27 years ago, I can't really complain. That's being replaced next week. The paperwork for the HELOC to pay for all this should go through this week. I could cover most of it but I'd rather not touch my savings.
Meanwhile I'm still decluttering. Three more grocery bags of clothes are going to my friend who works with the disabled. Two boxes of random stuff and a trash bag of stuffed animals are slated to go to Savers. And I've been tossing things in the trash willy nilly. I've gotten rid of so much stuff but still have a long way to go.
I need to drop this thread more often. I had pages and pages to catch up on! Hugs to all who need them and kudos to those who are accomplishing so much!

Welcome back Malarky! How are the girls settling into their new place? Nice to see you back Hitenney! We kept E today, and had DS1/DDIL/E and DD for both late lunch and dinner. It was great but I'm exhausted! The cleaner came today. I have my last PT session tomorrow, then I need to pack. We leave this weekend. DD and (soon) DS3 will hold the fort. My schedule is now 50% complete, and still correct! I'm still beating myself up over having taken on that many hours, but it's only for 3.5 months.

Unpacked my boxes of books and found a dozen or so that I'm gonna get rid of. I also have a box of household stuff to go to the Goodwill along with a yarn blanket and four throw pillows.

Y'all know how much we adore E. But since DS1/DDIL/E were not planning on coming back for a while, I asked DS1 to empty the box of toys in the LR. He did. Apparently now they are thinking that they may come back for a few days in late Aug. That would be great! But for now I'm REALLY enjoying the toy-free LR LOL. I also went through and put away most (but not all) of the kiddie books.

debthaven I know that is the way my mom felt when the great grandkids went home. They would put the toys in the box and then she had them in the closet where she kept them by the time they were at the corner. She would also wash the glass in the front door and front window from nose prints. She did enjoy when they visited, but I know she was happy to have her house back. Of course, I'm sure she felt the same way about when I would leave after staying for a week.
