Thanks everyone. We're managing. In random order:
DH and L2 are keeping in touch. They agreed that MIL and FIL are the ones who get to make medical decisions for BIL. DN#6 is legally an adult and his daughter but I don't think anyone, including her, would be comfortable with her making decisions regarding his health right now.
He's officially got cirrhosis of the liver. Based on the color of the blood clots, the medical staff think they were older bleeds. They rubberbanded a couple of places when they did the endoscopy. They think they've gotten most of the bleeding stopped. There may be a very small bleed/leak somewhere but it's not high on their concerns right now. He was sedated last night and they're only bringing him out of it now. I'm thinking this is a lighter version of a medically induced coma. There are a couple of options for the next step in his treatment. I'm not sure what they are. DH isn't getting full info from L2, which we get. Phone tag is not a good way to handle a medical crisis. DH is heading over to the hospital around 4-5pm.
I've got split pea soup and vegan chili quinoa going for our dinner tonight. I told DH that we'll send some with him to give to L2. I'm sure food is the last thing on her mind right now. Her son (senior in HS) is vegan so this way she's got dinner tonight set.
DH and I are cautiously touching on the future with BIL. He's tossed around the potential impairment that may mean BIL cannot live by himself. I tossed around partial liver transplant with him as donor. So we're both thinking. Right now I'm on the "Keep swimming" from Dory logic. Hence the food for L2 and getting the Christmas stuff taken care of. DH took K Christmas shopping a few minutes ago. My brother is taking C to see the new Star Wars movie in a few minutes. I'm going to sort through presents and figure out what other shopping needs to happen. It may be a leaner Christmas for the kids, not due to money but due to procrastination. Oh well.
Oh, it's not looking like BIL will be out of the hospital in time for Christmas. But again, we're getting info in chunks from L2. I don't know whether or not to hope that he gets out or that he stays in, to be honest.

BIL failed the eye tracking test so they re-sedated him. I'm not sure what that means for his recovery. Dh will have more info tonight, I think.

BIL is expected to be in the hospital for a min. of 2 weeks. He's intubated and apparently not able to breathe on his own. He's still bleeding and they haven't figured out where yet. He bp is steady but low. He's apparently a mass of tubes right now. We're wondering if he actually did get resuscitated after flatlining. Oh, and one of his kidneys is screwed too. They're talking about dialysis. The other kidney is ok though.
I'm so tempted to ask my sister to go and talk to the doctor and then translate for me and DH. She works next door to the hospital and is a nurse. There's HIPAA stuff to be considered though.

Why can't your DH talk to the doctor? Why would you need to get your sister involved?

My sister is a nurse and speaks fluent Doctorese.
They stopped the sedation this morning. He didn't wake up. He was in a coma but it sounded fairly positive - body's got a chance to start the healing and the hospital is monitoring his blood sugar levels as he's diabetic and they're adding potassium as needed, etc. He had either a seizure or a stroke around 3pm. He's getting an emergency CT scan. DH said they would kick anyone in the machine out, it's that kind of emergency. So much for feeling positive...
DH is there now. K is at my sister's seeing the new dog. C is home with me. I think I have to go start doing stuff.

it's a seizure, not a stroke. they're adding seizure meds to his IV. It sounds like they're going to monitor his brain waves/activity too. He's stable again. ETA - it sounds like the alcohol leftover in his system? is the presumed cause of the seizure. I don't have a clue how they came to that conclusion.
I did do something. I make DH a no bake GF, DF cheesecake. It's chilling in the fridge now. He can eat it around 830ish. C and I licked the beaters, it's tasty.
K is spending the night at my sister's. I'm grateful because I don't want to leave the house anymore tonight. I'll bring her clean clothes tomorrow - a bunch of us are meeting for lunch so it works.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, I'm exhausted. Too many highs and lows today.

Wisconsin Beth Sorry to hear all this. Possibly the seizure is from alcohol withdrawl?

No change overnight. This is the most positive update we've had since he went in. He's stable. I'm going to go visit for a bit at some point today.
I'm working from home right now, I've got 1 task to complete.

Beth, I am so sorry to hear this. Is DBIL at Froedtert? I guess almost all our hospitals are decent. Sending prayers for BIL and MIL.

Yep. Best place for him. They've got his blood sugars under control right now too, around 125 instead of his 'usual' 300-400! My mom really wants to smack him, hard, to knock some sense into him. I told DH and he said he completely understands her feelings on this. I'm probably giving away too much of his personal health info here but I need a release valve and you guys are it.

I finally went to see him today. He looks like hell. But the one doctor expects him to wake up and eventually be back to normal.

Don't you love how alcoholics/addicts can just take over your life? I say this as an alcoholic sober for a while. I'm really sorry your BIL and his disease are putting all of you through this.

They've removed all the brain monitoring stuff. BIL's had no signs of seizures since the first/only one. He's still in a coma but he's very twitchy, with lots of movement. It sounds like that means he's going to come to soonish.

He's waking up about every hour, doing the eye and finger test stuff, then going back to sleep for another hour. He's on a stronger antibiotic to target the infection in his lungs. And he either got or is going to get another blood transfusion. His numbers are dropping again. The blood loss is worrying but the rest is feeling positive.

Beth are you working today, or are you off? Will you have to go in and do year end stuff? How did you Christmas go with the kids?
Did your family have a Christmas Dinner away from the Hospital? I know your MIL has been ill also.

I'm working from home on the rosters that payroll needs. Once that's done, I can log off. I'm tracking the time for Comptime/Flextime purposes. I'm in the office tomorrow, Sunday and Monday, then off until the 6th. Sunday is the realignment due to budget cuts, plus payroll needs.
Christmas went fairly well. K is still sleeping, she needs to catch up on about 10 more hours of sleep... C is playing xbox. The kids had fun. We hosted Christmas Eve at our house and MIL did host Christmas day at her house. She's breathing much better since the 2 transfusions over the last couple of weeks. Since BIL was in the coma, we did the regular Christmas plan. DH and K went to see him after MIL's house. C and I were at home, I napped, which was desperately needed.
DH is at work. He's got acupuncture tonight. Once K wakes up and I'm done with work; we'll go take care of BIL's ferret. After that, I'm not sure what we're going to do today.

Ok, he's awake and aware (sort of). He does NOT want to be in the hospital and apparently has told the nursing staff that they can't keep him without his consent. Considering he's hooked up to a breathing tube, an IV and a catheter; he ain't going anywhere anytime soon. They do think he'll be moved out of ICU in the next 24-36 hours. So he's doing better. He also wants him Mom. The nursing staff is going to have their hands full with him.

DH 'reminded' (aka nagged) his mother to call her doctor to set up an appointment. The doctor's office want her to go to Urgent Care. They're afraid of a blood clot in her leg. My FIL is taking her around 2pm.
