Wow and I used to give my dad crap for getting my brother into school. Older brother got wait listed at the family school (everyone went/goes there except me and my son - I got in early admission I just hated going anywhere that people knew my family). Dad was friends with the Dean of Admissions and grandpa donated heavily to the school. All Dad did was ask his buddy to focus on my brother's test scores and ignore the fact that he had pretty bad grades. Granted my brother is really smart just super lazy at school work. Which is funny because he has a PhD and is a professor of Biology now.
Makes you wonder how those kids did in their classes at college if they couldn't get in on their own merits. But I'm assuming they were there more to say "I went to Yale" than to actually get an education. They do poorly, become POTUS and then threaten the school with lawsuits if they release the grades.

Does the NCAA say to Coach K at Duke, "Hey Coach, we hear from your admissions office that you are recruiting Joey "1/2 inch vertical" Johnson to join your basketball team. He doesn't seem to have the skill level of your typical recruit. Want to explain your interest in him?" I don't think they monitor things at that level. Now if you fast forward a bit it makes sense, "Hey coach, you have signed and used one of your limited scholarships to have Joey sit at the end of your bench. Care to explain that one?" Easy enough to "recruit" the kid to be a walk-on, get the admissions office to admit him/her as a student so they can play for the school, and then cut them from the team after the first hour of practice. They would still be an admitted student. I don't know, it just seems weird and too easy to determine the person isn't really an athlete. I played softball in HS. I had no business playing DI softball. You can figure that out with a quick google search. Part of the materials uncovered were the student faces photoshopped onto athletic bodies

All this to get into USC? That's what really confuses me.

You think Trump's dad didn't pay to get him into U of Penn for those last two years of his bachelors degree...

Well, if years of tax and bank fraud gets punished by 47 months less time served, what kind of punishment can these parents get? Twelve lashes with a wet noodle?

My thing is we always knew rich white folks had an advantage, it was always accepted as fact, DUH
Like stated in the NY time article:
Why in their case the common practice not enough? Why the extra step?

Hubs said in Africa and other countries this went on all they time, they just paid and got a diploma. He said there were a lot of so called engineers that knew nothing. I'm sure some of them were "hired" on the jobs just because.

The coaches have lost their jobs. For them, that is some kind of punishment. Hopefully, they get something from the judicial system.
My parents could never have done this for me. I don't think they would have if they could have. My family is not of financial means so both my sister and I went to college the old-fashioned way. We took our own entrance exams, got good grades in high school, took out student loans and worked out way through college.

The folks who received the bribes are in big trouble - you know they didn't report any of the bribes as income on their tax returns.

I never knew that existed... is that a thing really? Unlimited time for your SAT test? Two ways: Legitimate? Maybe through an IEP. Illegitimate? The test is usually given in a Saturday. The post office doesn't reopen for mailing until Monday. An unscrupulous test administrator could make that work.

I never knew that existed... is that a thing really? Unlimited time for your SAT test? Yes, it's for ADA compliance. Extra time, not exactly unlimited. There are many reasons why someone taking an exam would need some sort of reasonable accommodation. I work in test development and administration so exam security is serious to me. Of course, I know nothing about the SAT or ACT as my work is in professional licensure.

Campuses touch and they share some services but speaking in generalities there can be some, tension implies too much emotion, looking at each other with a bit of disdain and superiority?

Having a lot of money gets you things you otherwise wouldn't receive? I'm SHOCKED that money buys people into good schools...how is this news exactly? Feels like the only reason these 2 "celebrities" are implicated is because they aren't that famous. If they had a famous name they wouldn't even need the money to get in, even if they still weren't deserving.

I think it is time for Senator Warren to demand and then head a Senate investigation on these flagrant law breakers! She certainly has a huge amount of knowledge in this area of cheating to gain a leg up in a prominent University!

He even cheats at golf!

Oh hey, I work by Penn and Drexel. My wife and I went to Drexel late 60's. We never associated with Penn. Not even my frat which had a chapter there. They thought they were too good for us. FYI oped
