I liked it a lot, but I've always liked all the characters & didn't see it as just "her" show.

Gee, dying of a drug overdose sounds like a really fun comedy. Not. I mean this show is a comedy. I guess there is no good way to kill her off but not sure how you do that without casting a pall over the actual comedy of the show which is the point. I like Roseanne but certainly will not be watching this.

Fisher beating Jackie, Dan getting arrested for beating up Fisher, Roseanne dealing with her father's abuse, Becky running away & marrying Mark, Darlene getting knocked up as a teenager, Roseanne being pregnant & with possible issues considering an abortion...all very deep subjects that have been covered by this comedy. Doesn't have to be Gilligan's Island to be a comedy.

it's one way of making clear that she will not be welcomed back.
think back to when Kal Penn left the cast of House to go work in the Obama administration. his character was killed off as well.

I recognized this even more when I re-watched the show last spring/summer.
I haven't watched last night's episode yet but I already heard how they were going to kill her off. Considering last season's episodes I think having her die from an opioid overdose makes sense.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/conners-premiere-tv-ratings-oct-16-2018-1152947The Conners, ABC's Roseanne Barr-less Roseanne spinoff, fell considerably short of its predecessor's debut last season — although it still put up solid numbers and is the top series premiere in adults 18-49 this fall. In metered-market households Tuesday night, The Conners drew a 7.5 rating/12 share, off about 35 percent from the 11.6/19 for Roseanne's premiere in March. The declines in the fast national ratings were steeper: The premiere's 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 is down 56 percent from Roseanne's 5.2; in total viewers, it's off by 43 percent (10.46 million vs. 18.44 million).

Some time during the first half of this season's Modern Family, someone is scheduled to die. No one is saying it will be anyone in the primary cast or occasional cast member/guest star. Humor can be found in death and funerals. Anyone remember the Mary Tyler Moore show episode when Chuckles the Clown passed away and his funeral? Mary was angry with everyone at work because they were laughing at some of the stuff Chuckles did during his career at the station. But then the funeral: Meanwhile, A 'Significant Character' on Modern Family Will Die This Season — Here's Who It Could Be

As for Modern Family I'll have to take your word for it since haven't seen it. Probably be like most tv shows I'll catch it 5 yrs down the road when reruns come on.

She has the most connections with the characters, 'good' and 'bad'.

So I watched The Conners last night. Thing 1 and I both agree that it's much better than the reboot with Roseanne. It was much more like the original. Had a dark subject, but still some funny parts. I'll be interested to see what next week is like now that the original explanation of why Roseanne isn't there is out of the way.

It did seem much more like the original. Rosanne Barr said that having Rosanne Connor die of an overdose is not good for fans of the original show because that doesn't fit her personality. Well, the NEW Rosanne doesn't fit the personality of the original. I didn't miss her last night; however, it did feel a little odd only because I always thought John Goodman (Dan) and Rosanne fit well together. Their relationship in the original show was a good one and it almost seemed like they belonged together.

The two-part episode with Amber - that was hands-down one of the best pieces of television I have ever, ever seen. I gave up on House a few years after that (I couldn't deal anymore with - lupus! auto-immune! allergy! infection! aha I know what it is from some random event!), but I will always remember just how good that episode was. I should go try to find it now and watch it.

Roseanne being addicted to prescription drugs was addressed at the end of last season so I think it makes perfect sense that they use that storyline to write her off. I don't get how that is a surprise to anyone.

I don't get how that is a surprise to anyone. I was thinking the same thing but thought maybe I had it mixed up with old shows. I didn't pay close attention to the reboot show - just kinda hit and miss but remember the talk about her pain from something.

I thought an opioid overdose made sense. It goes to the show tackling low-middle income household problems and the opioid crisis is huge.
I also bought the acting between David and Darlene. I was worried I wouldn't be able to see the actor as David since he's a favorite of mine in Big Band, but he played right back into the original character.
It was enough to keep me watching.

I'm loving The Conners more than I loved original recipe Roseanne. Becky is the hidden gem this season. She's getting all the best smart ass moments.
It is in discussions for another season next year. They're working on schedules because Metcalf & Goodman have other projects going on too. It's ABC's highest rated sit com & ratings have balanced out to basically where they were at the end of last season before the "incident".

I totally agree! I am really liking it without her. I have said before I never watched it for her anyway I liked all the other characters much better. She was truly annoying. And Steff beat me too it I was also going to say that Becky is much funnier now that she is a screw up.
I think maybe we should let this thread die and start a new one for The Conners since it isn't Roseanne anymore. What do you all think?
