IDK, I watched the first 1/2 hour and there were a few laughs - I liked how they worked in the "old story lines" with Dan, and Becky, and Darlene and how DJ (and his kid/wife) were still just a 'walk on'... I do like the chemistry between Laurie Metcalfe and Rosanne. Towards the end of the first episode, IDK, I kinda got a weird undertone from the show that was kind of depressing... the family is exactly where they were 20 years ago - all of them lovable "failures" - which echo'd some of the jibs that they were throwing at each other - which implied that they were destined to be failures (or maybe just bullied into Rosanne (the character) self fulling prophecy of failure? - the scene with Jackie saying Rosanne always pushes the self doubt..made me think).
I watched part of the 2nd episode - but had to turn it off - I felt that Rosanne - when defending her grandson was just adding to the "we're destined to be losers - so be nice to us - it's the burden we must bear". I was having a hard time accepting that Rosanne (the character) would defend her grandson. I got the feeling it wasn't "love" but rather "I have to carry this burden". Maybe I was just tired when I watched it.
I probably will watch future episodes - I've found that premieres of shows rarely indicate what the rest of the series will actually be like.

I thought the original Roseanne did a good job of raising political issues without being preachy or overly partisan. (The episode where the state rep goes door to door talking about the economy is one of my favorites... "so you're telling me you're going to bring these companies in so they can hire us for scab wages, and in return, we get to pay their taxes?")
Something tells me that nuance has been lost over the last 20 years. (I haven't seen the new show yet.)

I thought it was good and it was like seeing an old friend I hadn’t been around in years.
I think it would be awkward not to include the current political climate for the kind of show it is and who it is supposed to represent.
The only thing that seemed off was Lacy Goranson as Becky, it just wasn’t a good acting job in the new show and I remember her being pretty decent in the original.

So is the 4th kid, Jerry Garcia, on the show?
I will watch it sometime over the next few days.

Rosanne/Dan mentioned him - he's working on a Freight Ship (I assume on the Great Lakes) and doesn't have access to a phone often - and when he does he never calls home At least that was Rosanne's complaint.
I thought it was a clever way to explain what he was doing and why he might not be around (or might suddenly drop into the series in future seasons). The Connor's do live in the Chicago Land Area AND there are Freight Ships on Lake Michigan (the rest of the Great Lakes) where the crew have very little contact beyond the ship for weeks/months at a time.

I agree with this ... but, the politics in the Premiere seemed alittle more like the "tit for tat" political bickering that seems to permeate politics these days - than actual "commentary" or "showing another side" of political issues. This may have been done just to get across to the audience where the characters stand in a humorous/very quick way... not sure. I'm hoping the show goes back to the originals way of dealing with politics (or maybe goes an "All My Family/Archie Bunker" route).

I don't know if Roseanne could pull that off with the characters they've already established. Archie, Meathead, George, and others were caricatures. It was easy to place them at odds with views that were extreme and let the viewer recognize that the truth exists somewhere between. Maybe they can do that on a much smaller scale on occasion, though.

I don't know if that's because they've tried to call him to come back and he didn't return their calls, or if they're just dismissing him that way for now.

It was OK. It was also very political. Episode 1 was way too political for me. I get dropping in a fee lines, but did we need a whole episode about it?

I have been watching a lot of older shows lately (The Jeffersons, Good Times, Rosanne, The Golden Girls, etc.) A lot of sitcoms through the years have poked fun at politics but it was done in funny and subtle ways (like Mid's example). It wasn't "in your face" and it certainly wasn't every episode. I don't need a great deal of political references or banter in television. I watch TV to forget about all that shit

I didn't watch the original series, but I watched the reboot with DH last night. I thought it was fairly funny. Political? Yes, but I think it was getting it all out of its system in the first episode and then will move on. I felt the same way about the Will & Grace - the first one was very political, but subsequent episodes haven't dealt with politics as much, except for one that I really recall.
I don't know if I'll enjoy it as much since I never watched the original show, but it was entertaining for an hour.

I watched it last night and thought it was pretty good. I found the political stuff a bit much for my taste and unnecessary to the storyline but, like Steph said, I guess they wanted to get that all out of the way in the beginning. I would have found it much funnier had they just done a couple of subtle jabs at one another here and there as opposed to the yelling, etc. between Rosanne and Jackie. For instance, Jackie telling Rosanne what a "great health plan" she voted for would have been much funnier had it been slipped in somewhere else, or when Rosanne told Jackie that she wanted healthcare for all because she couldn't do simple math. I think both those lines would have been even funnier without all the political hoopla surrounding them.
Like Tiny, I did find it a little depressing that Becky and Darlene had not done better for themselves.

they now have satellite internet.

I watched 2 episodes from season 2 while on the elliptical last night and then watched this week's episode. There is definitely something "missing" in the writing to me. Also, something in Rosanne's personality has changed. I can't put my finger on it...yes, she is still loud and squeaky (that certainly hasn't changed) but her personality seems different on the reboot.

The first episode was funny, this week's was just okay.
I think everyone is good but Roseanne seems like she forgot how to act or is trying too hard.
It's hard to judge because I know the pilot and first few episodes are always about the cast and show finding their groove, getting into character, etc.
We will keep watching.
We also started Splitting Up Together, which is pretty good!

I finally got around to watching the first two shows from last week. I thought the first episode was a bit strained/forced and the 2nd one was much better and funnier. It does look like they got most of the political stuff out of the way in the first one and are now getting back to what the show is suppose to be about which is good.
I think the boy playing Darlene's son is a hoot!

I'm surprised. I'm a huge fan of the original series, but I'm about done with the reboot. The last episode about how the muslim neighbors must be terrorists pretty much did it for me. Too much political BS. I just want to watch a show that makes me laugh. Oh well.

I heard on the radio this morning that the show will be moving away from politics next year.

The show is actually kind of depressing. It was one thing to see them poor when they were younger, but seeing them still this way in their 60's is just plain sad.
I am now on season 6 of the original. This seems to be the first season they start becoming a little more financially stable. Rosanne's sandwich shop is doing pretty well. From what I remember, the sandwich shop continues to do well in future episdoes. So what happened to it? Have they addressed this in the newer episodes and I just missed it?

I don’t remember it being addressed. While it’s a little sad it also is spot on to what happens to a lot of people, my parents were doing well in that my dad retired with a nice gov pension and home paid off, then decided to try two small business that failed and now he is stuck with a mortgage and other debt and having to be all over cash flow.
