4/13/18 Azucena $9,175 of $25,000 for 37% (stretch $35,000 26%)
Another payday, another update...finished paying for concrete work, bought a new patio set, and will be picking up a basketball hoop this weekend - that's the last of the bonus spending, will need to split future 2018 "extras" between savings and paying off Disney cruise. Can't wait to shoot hoops with my kids if the spring ever arrives. Finally figured out who to make as secondary guardian for our kids so on the to do list is to complete a will. My mom will be named first but she's 61 and I'd rather not redo the will as she ages and I want to give her an option if she needs out. Now, to ask the friends of ours that we have chosen. There's plenty of life insurance in place so raising two additional children will not be a financial burden. Most important is that these friends share our values and love our children. Also need to find a financial adviser. With my promotion, I am now part of some long term incentive program which includes corporate stocks. Seems like there is also an additional monetary payment that may be converted to stock. I've read the 50 pages they gave me 3 times and still have questions. Hopefully the HR meeting in a few weeks will help, but I'm feeling way, way out of my financial league. It's also clear that this will make our taxes more complicated. We do have a CPA for those. Keep up the good work everyone. I'm really feeling the spending bug right now so need to figure out how to partially appease that while still sticking with our fairly rigid financial plan. Also need to figure out what the short term and long term plans and goals are. There are so many choices and only so much money. Posting my updates to this thread helps make sure I continue to save a decent %. Moved $851 to savings this week. 4/20/18 Azucena $10,026 of $25,000 for 40% (stretch $35,000 29%)

I am posting my end of month numbers now, since we won't be back from our trip before the month closes! We hit two goals this month. We actually surpassed our $5000 Disney goal- we are currently at $5175.51, but I didn't want to throw off my numbers. We added an extra day to our trip, so we still need $120 to cover the hotel room. We will easily add that before we leave (pay day). This trip is 100% financed in cashed and free money I've earned from apps and a few rewards sites!

Not a financial comment, but I would like you to keep in mind that more things change over time than just the your mom. I believe that as children age their needs change and the perfect guardian today may not be the perfect guardian in (making something up here) say 8 years. I am obviously still around as is my xH so guardians were never needed, but when DS1 was ~10yo we did change our will for this exact purpose. Our dear friends who had agreed to be guardians for our kids if needed, were still just as wonderful and they still loved our kids. However, we felt that as teens our sons would need more support than most people can provide if they were suddenly orphaned. So we asked my sister, who has no children of her own, if she would take them. DSis has worked all her life with children in crises and her strenght is dealing with teens.
We felt very strongly that their needs had to be our first consideration, so we made the change (and did not lose friends over it). Long story short - until your children are adults you probably will want to keep evaluating what will be best for them if the worst would happen and change whatever needs to be changed to make that happen

Excellent advice that I will keep in mind - thank you. The only sibling between us that is married has a special needs child so I wouldn't want to impose on her. My mom is perfect for now and hopefully a good long while, but I just meant that should that change quickly or should she feel that she doesn't have the energy at some point, we wanted to have this couple in place already on paper rather than have to adjust it. Given DD1 is 9, we are already behind getting this done so removing a potentially likely reason to change it later seems to make sense.

I have totally stuck my head in the sand with the appointing guardians thing. If I were to die both the kids would go to their respective Dad's, which is "ok" (but not great) for the one, and HORRIBLE for the other, but I'm not sure there is much I can do about it. I just can't die.

Savers,
The end of the month is rapidly approaching.
Please get your updates posted by Friday, May 4. I'll do the smilies that evening.
Thank you!
With the tax season pretty much over, we should be settling down to more regular savings from now until year end. Is there anything you plan to do to boost savings to reach your goals maybe a little sooner?
This morning I woke up, slept a little later than usual (big thanks to my dog, who usually likes me to get up early), and contemplated going out for breakfast. There's a place here where the omelets are so big I can get one, eat 1/4 of it at the restaurant (along with the three pancakes that come with it), and take the rest of the omelet home and have breakfast for three more days. I love their coffee. I even thought about getting their bowl of fruit, too. And then I thought, well, I have that very same fruit sitting in my fridge waiting to be eaten. I have eggs. And this could be the reason to make muffins because I've been wanting to do that all week but haven't had time to do it. I stumbled to the coffee maker (still in a sleep stupor, so I actually had to think about what I was doing...), made a pot, and am getting ready to fix breakfast for myself, and save $15. And by "save," I mean take $15 cash out of my purse and actually SAVE it. Last night, I was thinking of going out to get dinner and have a glass or two of wine. Instead, I went to the wine store, bought a bottle of wine ($10) and ate Mexican leftovers at home. I would have spent maybe $30 on dinner/drink with tax and tip, so I'll put away $20 ($30 - $10) too. I'm thinking of adding this to my savings goals. Every time I seriously think of going out to eat but instead decide to eat at home, I'll add to the fund. Any ideas what to call this new fund?
I'm trying to decide where I should stash the cash I save. It needs to be in a place that's not immediately obvious, but not so hidden that I forget where it is. Because I do that sometimes, and I hate when that happens.
Have a good weekend, all.

If any ideas come to me for where to stash and a good account name I'll come back and edit. ETA: there is a full cup of coffee somewhere in my house that I will find someday.

I am going to join this thread. I wanted to wait until I paid off the credit card to start savings, but some savings opportunities have a now or never aspect to them. For instance, IRA accounts.
My savings goal right now is for my 2018 IRA. I currently have $2,620.55 in my savings account. My goal is $5,500.00 by April 15, 2019.
Wish me luck!

Do you get bonuses (or will you get an income tax refund) that you can put toward your goal? Or will you put in a steady amount per week/paycheck/month?

This is my strategy; I get paid biweekly. One paycheck gets eaten up by mortgage, HOA, groceries and gas. The next one covers all other bills. So whatever is left of that one will go to savings. I can save at least $100 if not more from that second paycheck, depending on the month. For instance, in winter I pay a lot in electricity, so I have less money available. I will get a bonus in March 2019 and I will use it (or part of it) to complete the goal if needed.

Paid federal taxes of $2010 and property taxes of $1550. So sinking funds got sunken, hah.
plugginaway22 --5/1/18 ($9200 of goal $16,800) I copied my excuses from last month to keep me accountable.
Slightly back-pedaling over here...deposit on fencing and purchase of patio table, umbrella and grill!
plugginaway22 ($9810 of goal $16,800)
On a positive note, we have our new HSA account up to $2250, but I have not counted that in savings.

I'll be back soon. I've decided that the only repairs that I'll do to the house in the future will be those that HAVE to be done. Anything cosmetic or that might increase resale value will wait until I'm actually at a point of selling my house. If I continue to do the cosmetic stuff, I'll never save anything and I want to save as much as I can while I'm going to school and am receiving the housing stipend through the GIBill. So...lemme get these nitnoid little things taken care of that I can't avoid and I'll be back...saving like gangbusters!!

I'm a month ahead and all income from April goes towards May's expenses. Everything is allocated on the first of the month and starting tomorrow any income will be going towards June.

USAA has this new savings tracker/transfer tool. You have to sign up for it but, once you do, it transfers incremental amounts a few times a week, to a savings account that you specify. It never transfers more than $9 at a time and won't transfer anything if the checking account balance is less than $100. Over the past couple weeks, it's transferred about $60 out of my account and I never felt the pinch of it. I really like this tool.

Update: Just plugging along. Making some progress.....actually more than I thought I would. However, some expenses coming up. I just had knee replacement surgery on April 18.....bills to come. My max out of pocket for the year is $3k and I have already had some expenses this year with all the pre-appointments....so I am hoping to cash flow most of it but means I won't be adding to savings. Knee replacement is going well. Only spent 1 night in the hospital and completely off pain meds. Doing therapy but really not having issues and walking daily to build strength. Excited to get back to more exercise and remove the weight I added over the last couple of years not being able to exercise. I must have done something wrong with my numbers but I've double checked it a couple of times and can't figure out why I had such a big jump. Must have added an extra zero somewhere?? Snapdragon 5/02/18 --- $ 13,670.46 / $ 18,700 -- Update
Car/House $ 2501.91 / $3500 Savings $ 4013.07 / $4000 Travel $ 4085.92 / $4500 Property Taxes $ 1919.42 / $2200 Lasik $ 1150.14 / $ 4500 New Totals $ 13,670.46 / $18,700 I went ahead and paid the first half of my prop taxes out of checking...I want to have a decent buffer in case there is another large jump next year. I know that I will be updating later this month but I wanted to get this in for the list. Though I have the feeling that amounts will be changing later. It's good I have the money but now I don't want to use it to pay for things I saved the money for..

Oh right now I'm saving for the new Shingrix vaccine. I'll have the money for the whole thing in June 1, with over a hundred dollars as a cushion in case of an oops price.
