Once wind speed reaches a sustained 45 MPH, ambulances, fire trucks and other high-profile vehicles cannot be on the roads. Police cruisers can, and generally try to remain on the roads (mostly to keep the onlookers going to the beach away from it) until winds reach a sustained 70 MPH. Once that happens, even the cops go inside. 911 operators will take calls, of course. But no one comes out to rescue anyone, evacuation zone or otherwise, in those conditions. High-profile vehicles tip over. And although police cruisers are built like tanks, they cannot survive a falling tree or other heavy missile debris. I am a borderline evacuation zone - on the other side of a small river bridge is a non-evacuation zone. A matter of less than a half-mile. Than non-evac zone is surrounded by two branches of a river, east and west. I have a branch of the river to the west, and no water to the east for more than 2 miles. I have no idea how the county figured out these zones. The houses on the west side of the bridge have flooded before. We on the east side never have. Historically, the zones make no sense. Same here. They reconfigured evac zones in our area in 2015. We are now in the median evac zone instead of the last evac zone. Tropical storm Debby brought the lake within 6-8 ft of the back of the house but we did not flood. The worst we have had since I have owned this house in Aug 2000 was a 4 hour power outage during a tropical storm. We know the outages are coming. We are on the main line with the police and fire department, so we hope it will not be bad. We went without power for a week after Wilma. Frances and Jeanne were a couple of days each. One of our neighbors offered us additional gas. He stored 60 gallons in his boat. Nice of him. Oh, and I have a wine collection. Once the power goes out, the wine goes in its own cooler. Either that, or I call you.

It all keeps shifting West. Though at least one meteorologist jinxed us with talk about how Charley took a huge unexpected right hand turn.

Ok, this makes me happy. A Key West local took it upon himself to evacuate as many of the chickens as he could.

It's not easy to catch those cats. They're pretty tame. They said they're bringing them all in the house. And a bunch are on meds so the vets dropped off enough meds to last them several weeks, so they must catch them for that. Wow that's changed since I last toured the house. Cool. Btw, there are always people who don't evacuate key west.

I saw that photo. Couldn't stop laughing at the chicken being wrapped in newspaper...are we sure that's not just his hurricane food supply?

You should have seen all the people in Trader Joe's buying wine. Their "excuse?" No issue with room temperature!! Sounds like a partying great idea.

I just realized that this whole hurricane thing is my fault.
Pretty sure if I hadn't gotten that new washer and declared it would be good for 20 years, this wouldn't have happened. Kind of like how every time I get my car washed that calls the rain that afternoon...
Well, at least I got a good week's worth out of that washer before it gets totaled. We're pretty much packed and ready to go, but are spending one last night at home because it's much more comfy than our business warehouse/manufacturing floor is going to be. Snuggled on the couch watching Harry Potter movies. Tomorrow morning we'll bag up the last few things and head over to work. One of our employees just called and is freaking out so we invited him to come join the camping party at work; that seemed to make him feel better. He's not from Florida so this hurricane thing is new to him.
My oldest son has been vacillating between being a mature, helpful key member of the evac team and a total PITA. I know he's scared. But as I keep telling him that we'll be OK and that's all that matters - the rest is just stuff, he has come up with some interesting ways to look at the bright side like:
1) Well, mom, if the house gets scraped clean we'll be able to build that dream house we've talked about!
2) Do you think if I write about this in my college essays they'll feel sorry for me and let me in?

I'm traumatized enough worrying about the cats. Let me believe the chickens are going to be ok! Chickens have zero ability to survive a flood. They can't swim, they can't fly...

My friend's niece recently moved to Florida and she is renting from an older couple. Since she does not know anyone in the area and they were flying somewhere inland, they took her with them.

I can't believe the chickens let him do that. Wow. Chicken whisperer. Catching them was probably the hard part. Wrapping them in newspaper easy enough. Once you're holding them with their wings pinned to their sides, they can't do much. Probably took two people though. I've wrapped them in towels before, but not newspaper. Their feet are bound too. Now I'm hoping the poor chickens aren't stuck in the car for 24 hours like that.

I'm usually a white wine person in the summer cuz it's so damn hot here. I had to make sure I had some red on hand because if I lost power warm white wine is just gross and warm vodka with a mixer is just as bad. Had to have some room-temp acceptable booze.

I'm only bringing the good scotch because it's nice at room temp.

So, what I've learned today about prepping for a hurricane is that you need lots and lots of booze.

Nah, it's all about efficiency. Remember, I have to evacuate my house so space in my SUV is limited. Scotch is much more concentrated than wine... so one bottle goes much further in the happy department.
My crew and I figured this out quickly on our race boat. Not only wasn't there much storage space but it's critical to minimize weight to go faster. So while all the guys wasted space with beer and ice, we just filled our hip flasks with Scotch. See? Efficient.

True. Though I think ABC brand 151 might be stronger 😜

Well I still have some of that Limoncello I made with Everclear. But that's better cold than it is warm, so maybe not the best choice. One must be strategic about these things.

And a bunch are on meds so the vets dropped off enough meds to last them several weeks, so they must catch them for that. Saw this on my Facebook feed. From the Hemingway Home Museum. Hemingway Home Museum September 6 at 5:34pm · In preparing for Hurricane Irma, we have received numerous questions regarding the cats. In response, please be assured that all cats are and will be safe and well-cared for. Ten staff members will be, for the entirety of the storm, sheltering in place in the main house, the administrative offices, and the caretaker's residence to ensure that there is ample safe space available for every cat to be sheltered indoors, with staff to feed, care for, and comfort the cats for the duration of the storm. All of the cats are and will be continuously accounted for, and we will ensure that each cat is inside and safe during the entirety of the storm. Our veterinarian came today, and we are well-stocked with any necessary medications for the cats. Hurricane storm shutters are being installed on all the buildings on the estate, and the USDA-recommended "Purrfect" fencing system has been inspected to ensure that it is secure and completely in tact, and will be monitored during the storm and re-inspected immediately after the storm to repair any damaged areas. We have installed surveillance cameras that allow us to watch the entirety of the property from several different positions to ensure that all cats are accounted for. We have three generators and ample fuel, to ensure that we maintain electricity. We have stocked with ample water, food, medications and first aid supplies, hurricane radios, batteries, flashlights, and cleaning products. After the storm we will update this page to reassure the public that all cats and personnel are safe.

Irma is back to category 5...
They showed pictures comparing to Andrew, Irma is 2-3 times the size. Andrew was over Florida 4hours and Irma is expected to be over for 30 hours....
It's like the opening scene from a disaster movie....
Stay safe everyone!!

I'm glad I stopped by before hitting the hay... I'm relieved the cats (and people) will be OK. I know it's wrong to feel so much concern for cats I've never met while being just a little bit less concerned about the people involved. But, I guess I'm a bad person.
I'm now feeling really low class - because my family uses those little 'single serving' booze bottles instead of a flask... I think the most 'little bottles' successfully carried is like 12 - some in your boots and then one or two in every pocket (and you're wearing clothes in layers with lots of pockets).
I'm not sure how I feel about the Fowl Burritos - I didn't think you could burrito a chicken. I hope the chickens are comfortable and that they get un-burrito'd in a reasonable amount of time. I'm concerned about them but less than the Cats and Humans (so that's Cats, Humans, and then Burrito'd Chickens - the humans MIGHT move ahead of the cats - if the humans have had too much booze...as long as the humans are sober I'm less concerned.).
I really needed the distraction of this thread - cause Irma seems to have stalled over Cuba AND gone back to a Cat 5 storm AND it's now projected to hit the west coast at Cape Coral...and that's really bad for my family. but there's more than 24hrs for that Cone of Uncertainty - so I have hope.
Have you seen the numbers/pictures about the SIZE and Power of IRMA? it's almost as big as Katrina and it's got a heck of a lot more power (over a bigger area) than little 'wimpy' Andrew....
Batten down the hatches!

I'm not totally convinced they're going to be ok just because the caretaker says so. Everyone else is telling her to get the F out of there. She said it was because it would have been too stressful on them being in a van that long, but don't the Hemingways have a crap ton of money? You think they could just have loaded them all on a charter plane and been in a safe area in no time.

I used the zest of about 2 lemons, and I made a sugar syrup with some sugar and water. I think I steeped it for about 2 weeks. It wasn't quite as potent as I'd hoped and didn't quite have the yellow color. I'd consider giving it another go, but for how little I drink it, it's easier to buy.
