given your prerequisites for a show, Archer should not even be a blip on your radar. I kind of figured a show about guys shooting arrows into people for a living wouldn't meet the "not terribly violent" standard.

This is what I was able to compile. The '?'s represent unknowns, and the '(?)'s represent guesses on my part. The list is sorted alphabetically. 13 Reasons Why - "drama about a girl who kills herself" Alias Grace - ? American Horror Story - Horror (?) Anne With an E - ? Archer - An archer (?) Atypical - "about a high functioning boy with Autism" Bates Motel - Killer (?) Breaking Bad - Man cooking and selling methamphetamines The Crown - "insights into the life of Queen Elizabeth's early life" Captive - "a true crime regarding hostage/kidnapping situations" Curious and Unusual Deaths - ? Dave Chappelle - Comedian (?) David Blain - ? Dexter - Serial killer The Do Over - ? GLOW - ? Grace and Frankie - "Two older ladies find that their husbands are gay and want to be together" House of Cards - Political corruption, murder, betrayal The Indian Detective - Crime procedural (?) Intelligence - "a major marijuana drug seller and his trials and tribulations" Jessica Jones - ? Kevin Heart - ? The Killing - "Murder show" (crime procedural, like "Law and Order"?) Longmire - "Police drama set in Wyoming" Luke Cage - ? Master of None - ? Mindhunter - "about FBI profiling serial killers" Night Shift, ER - Medical drama similar to 'ER' (?) The Office - Comedy about office life Orange is the New Black - Drama about a women's prison (?) Ozark - Man laundering money for drug cartel People vs O.J. - O.J. Simpson trial (?) Preacher - ? The Ranch - ? Rectify - "teenager sentence[d] to death row for a murder/rape he did not commit" Retribution - ? Revenge - ? The Ridiculous 6 - ? Santa Clarita Diet - ? Shameless - "An f-ed up family in Chicago. Lots of cursing, drugs and sex scenes." Stranger Things - "about aliens and/or the supernatural", "more 'horror' genre homage" (similar to "The X-Files"?) ("The Outer Limits"?) Transporter The Series - ? True Memoirs of an International Assassin - Assassins (?) Unbreakable Kimmy - ? Voltron Legendary Defender - ? The Walking Dead - Zombies (?) I encourage anyone to reserve, copy, fill in as many unknowns as they can, paste, let somebody else reserve, etc. until all the blanks are filled. My wife and I are interested in finding some shows we can watch together. "The Crown" looks like it might be interesting, based on the description. We're generally looking for something without much on-screen violence (occasional police shoot-outs, car crashes, etc. are fine), with likable, moral protagonists, and without cruelty, profanity, smut, or homosexuality. Also, something that doesn't make fun of Christians or religious people would be a big bonus. Otherwise, the sky's the limit. Some examples of shows we've liked: "The West Wing", "Law and Order", early seasons of "The X Files", "Wolf Hall", "The Closer", "Forensic Files", "Star Trek: TNG", "Star Trek: Voyager", "The Outer Limits", "Face Off", "Meerkat Manor", nature documentaries, etc. Which of the Netflix shows above might fit the bill? (With thanks in advance for all assistance.) I thought you said you don't watch TV, Virgil. So, you don't watch TV except when you do?

I've said we don't own a TV but occasionally watch DVD box sets (on a large computer monitor): 8 times in total, by my count, with the most recent time being in response to the same criticism from you last December. I have also said that we usually visit my grandparents on the weekend. They own a TV set and we will, occasionally, watch shows on it. We've watched episodes of Doc Martin, Doctor Blake Murder Mysteries, Murdoch Mysteries, Father Brown, etc. I like watching documentaries, especially about animals. I currently don't own any TV streaming service, except the ability to purchase TV series through iTunes. This may change if, for example, we discover an interesting show on Netflix, e.g. "The Crown", "Death in Paradise". Finally: If we ever do decide to purchase a TV set or streaming service, I'll do my utmost to remember to notify you ASAP lest a future mention of "our TV" provoke great distress and alarm. There it is. Everything you ever wanted to know about Virgil's TV watching habits. Please bookmark this post for future reference.

Hollywood's favourite filler material. it's not a documentary - it's a scripted show based on the real life and events of the royal family at that time. And anyway, it wasn't any of the main characters.

I'm on the 2nd episode of Dark. I thought it was a serial killer or kidnapper but then when they started going back in time, I was like "ehhhhhhhhhhhh"..... Not sure if I'll keep watching.

Yes, it turned out to be way different than I thought too but it is SO good. I would say keep watching unless you just don't like stuff about time traveling. I really enjoy shows/movies on the subject so it was right up my alley.

Another Marvel show. Jessica Jones is a "failed" superhero who becomes a PI. It takes place in the same Universe as the Marvel movies (and Dare Devil, and Luke Cage), and therefore also Agents of Shield. This is a dark, dark dark show. There's sex (funny cause it's graphic novel style sex which means it's over the top) no nudity but suggestive shots (when the few bits of sex aren't happening). There's language. There's difficult to watch death scenes. I'm watching this now. If you like the "devil takes over innocent humans and makes them do awful stuff" type horror/stories... this could be for you. It's not a religious show - but it has the plot arch/moral dilemna of mind control and culpability. There's no "feel good" here. Kevin Heart - ? The Killing - "Murder show" (crime procedural, like "Law and Order"?) Longmire - "Police drama set in Wyoming" Luke Cage - ? This is a Marvel Comics show. It's probably got violence, violence, and sex in it. I'm watching this soon. - O.J. Simpson trial (?) Preacher - It's another graphic novel made into a show. It's dark, really dark... but strangely funny. It's violent, is erotic (I'm not sure if there was any actual sex or nudity in it), language, and you don't really want to watch this. the premise is that a couple of nitwit Angels have, um, misplaced an imprisioned celestial power (um, maybe a dark angel/Lucifer) and it's been released on earth and taken up residence in the title character Preacher. The Preacher isn't the most moral of people - but he's trying and thinks he can "use" the power he's been given to make things better... OK, that's not really good. It's an uncomfortable violent show. This is NOT "Highway to Heaven". The Ranch - ? Rectify - "teenager sentence[d] to death row for a murder/rape he did not commit" Retribution - ? Revenge - ? The Ridiculous 6 - ? Santa Clarita Diet - ? Shameless - "An f-ed up family in Chicago. Lots of cursing, drugs and sex scenes." Stranger Things - "about aliens and/or the supernatural", "more 'horror' genre homage" (similar to "The X-Files"?) ("The Outer Limits"?) <-- this almost exactly. But it's not like the x-files. It is an homage to the 80's, to horror, sci-fi, fantasy, nerds/geeks though. There's a "feel good" at the end of each season - when "good triumphs". There's some violence (mostly implied) and tense/tension/suspence is the baseline. Some sex (but not any worse than any regular aimed at adults TV show). This might be a good choice if you remember the non-popular stuff from the 80's. This isn't aimed at kids. Transporter The Series - ? True Memoirs of an International Assassin - Assassins (?) Unbreakable Kimmy - ? Voltron Legendary Defender - ? The Walking Dead - Zombies (?) I encourage anyone to reserve, copy, fill in as many unknowns as they can, paste, let somebody else reserve, etc. until all the blanks are filled. I came across a show on a regular TV channel called Heartland. I think it's from the mid 2000's and might be a Canadian show. It meets all your criteria (minus the "action" and "guns") I've stopped on the show when channel surfing - and it seemed to have enough plot and likeable characters to merit me watching it during the limited time I had. You should google/wiki it. The target audience is women and the guy who wants to watch TV with them (and maybe tweens/teens female/male). All the actors/actresses are all easy on the eyes without being overly sexualized. There is no sex in this show (from what I saw - although there are marrieds and dating couples) - but there were low key "boob shots" and a requisite "our men the heros walking away from the camera so the lady viewers could admire their, um, jeans" shot. The 2 end of episodes I saw were "feel goods". I'm not sure what you consider "smut" - since "smut' is in the eye of the beholder.... (I'm with Tom Lehrer on this one - in that everything is lewd when properly viewed. )

Thanks, Tiny . I've copied your amended list so that people can quote it: 13 Reasons Why - "drama about a girl who kills herself" Alias Grace - ? American Horror Story - Horror (?) Anne With an E - ? Archer - "Sweetie, no." (Looked it up: apparently a cartoon that "follows the exploits of a dysfunctional group of secret agents")Atypical - "about a high functioning boy with Autism" Bates Motel - Killer (?) I'm not sure what you consider "smut" - since "smut' is in the eye of the beholder.... (I'm with Tom Lehrer on this one - in that everything is lewd when properly viewed. ) Referring to anything pornographic. A rough litmus test would be: if the actor/actress was 10 years old, would the scene be appropriate? My wife watched all of "Heartland" and enjoyed it. I could never get into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Stuff that would NEVER pass the US censors.

Thanks for the suggestion. whoa. There is a HUGE difference between pornography and what is appropriate for a 10 year old to do on screen. Or in life. You either have a way different definition of pornographic than the reasonable definition of pornographic, or you are okay with 10 year olds doing stuff that reasonable people do not think 10 year olds should be doing. I don't care which it is, but you if you are hoping for people to narrow stuff down for you on that criteria you are going to get a really weirdly mixed bag of recommendations.

I'm limiting the scope of the comparison to sexual activities. But to be perfectly specific: no exposed genitals or breasts with the intent of titillating the viewership (nudity is fine in other contexts). No on-screen sex. No sex toys, fetishism, or heavy sexual innuendo. Couples kissing and fooling around, even in bed, is fine, albeit usually filler.

have you considered Bollywood movies/shows? My roommate in university loved Bollywood movies/shows before "Bollywood" was even a thing. I've seen enough three-hour-long Hindi musicals to last me a lifetime. His favourite was an early classic: "Devdas", about a lovelorn Romeo who literally drinks himself to death. I also remember "Hum Tum" and a few others. Wow, are those things painful if you're not a fan of the music. But if there are any specific ones you can recommend, and they don't involve three hours of singing and dancing... What I'm personally looking for is a good science fictiony one, like the early seasons of the X-Files, or the later seasons of The Outer Limits. The ones with a bit of mystery, and interesting premises that challenge the intellect. Another example would be the series "Lost," although I only watched the first (two?) seasons, and have been told by many people that it jumped the shark in later seasons. I see there's also another Star Trek series out. I loved "Star Trek: TNG", where, again, the episodes were mostly science fiction what-if scenarios full of interesting ideas. "Voyager" had some of this, but was already becoming soap opera-y, dealing more with social issues. "Enterprise" was even more about social issues, and the actors were badly miscast. Continuing along this trajectory, I don't have much hope for the current incarnation. But it's worth looking into. Growing up, I also watched fantasy/sci-fi like "Sliders", "The Pretender", "Stargate", and while the writing wasn't great, they were decent shows.

Did you ever watch Quantum Leap? I liked it and it might be on Netflix, but I haven't checked. It was science fiction-y I can't think of anything to recommend that's current.

there are lots of out-there sci-fi type shows (OA, Sense8, etc.) but I don't know if they'd meet your other criteria. If you're looking for something to tick all your desired/undesired boxes, you are going to be hard pressed to find more than a couple of shows without just watching kids programming.

I'd say that up until about 2005, pretty much everything on Canadian TV would have met my criteria. I knew the specialty channels and Netflixes of the world would produce shows laden with sex, vice, and violence because they were initially competing with network TV and their major competitive advantage was a virtual lack of content standards. But now that they're mainstream, I refuse to believe there aren't at least a few interesting shows that would meet pre-2005 Canadian network standards.

have you considered Bollywood movies/shows? Try Stranger Things. Some put it into the horror category but I don't find it scary at all...more science fiction to me. I really enjoyed Dark and it probably meets your criteria. It isn't just your typical "kid goes missing" show. It has a time travel/science fiction spin on it. It took a couple of episodes for me to get into it but then I was hooked.

That's not appropriate for a 10 year old. Therefore, it's pornography in your eyes.

I've only watched a couple eps but they were definitely pg. This site says its good for ages 10+ so meets your criteria there. www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/doctor-who
