Ha! Our wedding will be in October, so I fully expect to get some "Why so soon? You up the pole?" comments.

As for what I looked for in a husband: 1. Had to own his own vehicle (bought and paid for by himself). 2. Had to love children. 3. Had to be in a reasonably stable job with some ambition (didn't want to be content w/minimum wage for example). 4. Had to make me laugh.
I found all 4 with DH and I wasn't looking for him at the time we met. I've never been a heavy dater (only dated 3 guys between my ex and my current DH and DH was #3), but I've been in enough bad relationships that it didn't take much for me to figure out what I didn't want by those few I did date.
What I really learned between the time of leaving my ex and dating DH (three long years) was that I needed to work on me. I was willing to marry the ex because I had no self confidence in myself. I had to learn that I was going to be okay in life if I NEVER found a life partner. I thought I had to be married to be a complete person. The years that I actually spent alone, without even a boyfriend, taught me a lot about who I am and what I was willing to accept in life. Apparently, I'm not willing to accept very much below the best of everything in my life.
Why should I settle? Turns out, I didn't have to, DH is perfect for me.

No engagement ring yet - we're picking it out together this weekend. I do not plan to let him spend more than a couple hundred dollars on it. Thanks for the congrats, everyone

Now you KNOW you will get everyone's blessing. Unless, of course, a couple of hundred bucks will represent his two months salary and then everyone will tell you that he is a looser and to him BTW, is it totally wrong that I am sooo jealous of your Oct wedding? I would have loved to get married in Oct. Lena

Firebird, congrats! If you can both afford a decent ring (and you want one), go for it. After all, you'll be looking at it forever! ;D Mine is small but unique - a roughly 1/3 carat diamond with a pink sapphire on each side.

DF (wow, first time typing that - FEELS WEIRD) wants to get nice WEDDING rings, for the both of us "because you're just going to take off your engagement ring anyway."
News to me, but okay. I honestly don't care how fancy it is as long as it's pretty, my style, and preferably not a diamond. I don't even care if we forego the rings entirely. But I think it will be fun to pick one out with him regardless ;D
BTW, no offense intended to anyone who did want a fancy ring. Nothing wrong with that.
BTW, is it totally wrong that I am sooo jealous of your Oct wedding? I would have loved to get married in Oct.
I was sort of hoping it would work out this way myself! Fall is our favorite season - plus, it's not the traditional wedding season so I imagine we'll get a lot of nice discounts.

Congrats, Firebird! DH and I were married in October (09) and it was unseasonably cold, but our pictures turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I know I'm biased, but October weddings are my favorite ETA - We were able to get a good discount on the venue, since it was well past the "wedding season" but before the holidays. Just a hint though, try not to mention "wedding" to your vendors until you've gotten a quote... the mere mention of the word seems to automatically add a couple of zeros.

for the both of us "because you're just going to take off your engagement ring anyway." Really? Is this the norm now? I got mine soldered together into one piece, I wear my engagement ring and band every day. So does pretty much everyone I know. Suppose it doesn't matter, but taking off the engagement ring is a new one for me. Do spring on a wedding nice band. I used my great grandmother's and had to have it replaced because the original band was thin and cracked. Now it should withstand the test of time, totally worth the money.

Ooh, good hint. I'll remember that one for sure. Thanks! Also, unless we get married in Tucson or Vegas (no, we haven't even decided which state we're getting hitched in yet - I know, we need to get a move on) the wedding will definitely be indoors because I'm one of those chronically cold people and I don't want the fact that I'm freezing to mar my enjoyment of my own wedding.

I don't think it is. It struck me as odd, since I don't think I've ever met a married woman (who wore rings) that didn't wear both rings.
I actually would've rather liked an engagement ring / wedding ring set that fit into each other but I'm good with separate pieces too. And if they don't complement one another / fit well on my finger, I'll just wear the wedding ring.
We have also contemplated the idea of getting tattoos on our ring fingers instead of physical rings.

I forgot now but the jeweler explained to me how it works when you solder the pieces together and whether or not it will work. Cause mine isn't a set and they soldered together just fine. I THINK it had to do with the setting of my diamond.
They are both yellow gold so it works out. Even if they didn't match I wouldn't care. I only got them soldered together because they were rubbing against each other which was annoying and damaging the wedding band.

The engagement ring is a solitaire, and it makes my hand feel unbalanced somehow (and no, it is not ginormous, lol). I get it caught on things and have scratched myself with it a few times. I only wear it on special occassions. The rest of the time I just wear my wedding band and it suits me just fine. Honestly, I regret making DH get an engagement ring at all. ETA: Loved it at the time, though.

I wear both of my rings all the time. I only take them off if I'm preparing dough or doing stuff with ground meat. Plus, my engagement ring fits better than the wedding band, so it also works to keep the wedding band on my finger. We also got married in October. The weather was in the high 70s/80s and gorgeous. And no one told me that I was supposed to have a cheaper wedding because it was in October. I believe October is at the very end of "wedding season".

Congratulations, Firebird! We got married in October. My other favorite month was March. Both months are usually gorgeous here. I had my diamond mounted on my wedding band so I have only one ring. We were engaged for over a year (and lived together 5) and I wore the diamond with the band it came with until right before the wedding when we picked out our wedding bands. I then had the diamond mounted on the wedding band for the ceremony.
Oh, and I didn't really have any special requirements for a husband as I never intended to marry. LOL!! I just found the guy that made my heart sing and it worked out. We've been together 24 years this Sept. (our first date).

DF (wow, first time typing that - FEELS WEIRD) Wait till you have to start calling him DH. I spent the first three months of our marriage referring to DH as "the guy I married" or his actual name because I could not bring myself to say the word husband--it was toooooo weird. It took me even longer to stop flinching when he called me his wife.
