Your child IS spoiled.
Back in my day, all we had to eat was a mush made of hardtack and gangrenous limbs that we hacksawed off the Confederates.

My mom makes one called sweetheart salad that has clear gelatin, cream cheese, some sort of whipped topping, pineapples & merichino cherries. It is really sweet & fluffy & yummy. Now you guys have me thinking about it. Sounds similar to Mom's Pink Cloud, except I don't think there's gelatin and there is definitely sweetened condensed milk in hers. (because why not more sugar? ) We reserve the sweetened condensed milk for chocolate pie. My mom's chocolate pie is to die for. It is like fudge in a graham cracker crust topped with whipped cream. We only have it at Christmas.

Who knew YM would end up starting a Watergate Salad revival movement. The recipe was originally created by Kraft using Jell-O brand pudding. I figure people call them all Jell-O salads for the same reason everyone calls tissues "Kleenex" regardless of the label on the box.

I figure people call them all Jell-O salads for the same reason everyone calls tissues "Kleenex" regardless of the label on the box. I texted my Aunt to specifically request this yesterday. She always has it, but I wanted to be SURE it was there. She replied "Why wouldn't I make that?"

Chive I always thought pineapple should be served cold too, until a recent dinner at a close friend's house. Another close friend of hers is a professional gluten-free chef, and she brought dessert: she flambéd/caramelized the pineapple in rum, brown sugar and a tiny bit of cinnamon. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS!!! I'm not a pineapple fan in general, but the rest of the ingredients list didn't do anything for me, either. what your friend did, though, I would likely try just in case. that sounds tasty! and MPL - jalapenos make anything better I grill pineapple rings that have been coated in sugar, cinnamon, and a little bit of rum. Then I make a dip of mascarpone cheese and rum.

That's it. I'm lifting the ban on no cool whip, marshmallows, soup cans, cheese whiz, pillsbury, sour cream, cream cheese and half & half. If having fattening, unhealthy food for Thanksgiving is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

My mom used to make a jello salad. But instead of cool whip it has small curd cottage cheese and mayo. It actually didn't taste bad but not something I have a hankering to recreate anytime soon.

Sounds a little like a dish my grandma tried to get us to eat one Thanksgiving in that it may have been tasty but sounded so revolting none of us would try it. I like cottage cheese and I like mayo, but neither of those things sound good together much less combined with jello. Grandma's dish involved canned tomatoes, olives, sliced zucchini and strawberry jello. No idea what it tasted like since none of us could make ourselves take a taste...

That awful orange gelatin salad w/ cottage cheese is something my inlaws make, but none of their grown kids will eat it either. It was pushed on me until I insisted I don't eat coconut. I still was forced to try it, because it's so good! It is not. But, I get it, it's not Thanksgiving without something fluorescent and fluffy looking on your plate.

I'm getting ready to make our families version of the green jello salad.
You melt the marshmallows with the jello in the boiling water. They never totally melt. You mix the pineapple with the cream cheese and get it good and mushy together. Mix that in with the marshmallow/jello mixture. Let cool just a little bit and fold in the whip cream.

Ok the last two thanksgiving I have been invited to my friend Deena's. They make this awful thing...celery and something creamy ( cream cheese/sour cream?) mixed with nuts and cherrys. It's this pinkish stuff in a celery. JFTR I like green bean casserole.
And olives...bleh. I forgot to say olives.

the worst thing on my table tomorrow is a toss-up between the pancetta or prosciutto in the pair of green veg/pork dishes and the corn casserole that my roommate has asked me to make each time I've done a turkey dinner. it's something his mom used to do when she was alive, so I have no problem honoring the request. oh wait, I also have a store-bought blueberry pie.

It's this pinkish stuff in a celery. JFTR I like green bean casserole. Stuffed celery: About 10 washed, trimmed celery stalks 2-8 oz packages of "Philly" cream cheese Small jar maraschino cherries, chopped (juice aside) 8 oz can pitted black olives, chopped (about) 1 cup shelled walnuts, chopped Directions: Soften cream cheese at room temperature. Combine all ingredients with a fork, adding small amount of sugary liquid from maraschino cherries till mixture is light pink. Put into celery stalks with butter knife. Garnish plate with more olives and plain celery. So awful, but guaranteed not to fill you up before dinner.

And I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I like anchovies on my pizza and will try most everything once. But that combination of things - things that are all just fine on their own - is totally disgusting.

Yes, that's it. She raves about it, I am a very polite person, but even I had to say that ...no, just no.

hopefully they aren't insulted if you don't partake...? I don't think I could choke that down, honestly. and I surprised myself a few weeks back when I managed to eat a crepe with nutella and another half of one with nutella and banana. it just felt rude toward my very gracious host not to have something.
....and I'm actually twitching now, remembering that. <shudder>

I couldn't eat that. I hate olives and I'm not fond of that form of cherries.
I'm guessing you don't like Nutella chiver?
That reminds me I had awesome savory buckwheat crepes last spring in DC. They were so good. I might have to try and time my badge pick up with lunch and look for the crepe truck.

I can't stand any form of chocolate, so nutella is definitely out. and banana was probably the only thing that could have been added to the mix to make things worse.
but I figured I was in for the pound when my European host was insistent that "cocoa" wasn't "chocolate" and that nutella is way better than American chocolates. um, not quite.....

So, yesterday, ODS requested an apple pie in addition to the apple crisp my family regularly requests during the Fall and Winter. He specifically wanted a Dutch Apple Pie. Just in case he changed his mind, I made a double batch of pie dough. My name is GRG, and I LOVE raw pie dough. OMG!!! I'd forgotten how much I LOVE raw pie dough. Thank goodness I made a double batch of pie dough.
