Never had tuna noodle casserole either. First time I had anything made with cream of chicken soup was at MILs house. My mom grew up eating a lot of that processed stuff in the 50s and hated it. She refused to serve it to us. We were hardly rich. I never developed a taste for any of it so I don't cook it. The kids have never developed a taste for it either. Drives MIL nuts because that stuff is all the other grandkids eat. Mine won't touch it. that's pretty much what my mom said when I finally asked her about it in my mid-20s. I had an older co-worker that would look forward to when his wife would take their son to visit her side of the family for extended times that he couldn't take that much vacation time. he would revel in his tuna noodle casserole at lunch, and couldn't understand why I was horrified and not even remotely curious in his concoction. um, the fact that you only have this when your wife leaves wasn't a clue? you know I cook a lot, and well, or so I'm told... that said, I'm actually going to put a green bean casserole on the table next week. but I'm going to make it from scratch. between my abhorrence of anything "cream of X" and my roommate's legit mushroom allergy, it wouldn't be on the menu if it wasn't "whole" ingredients. There are lots of things I only make when no one else is around. It isn't because they are horrible just because they don't like them. One of those things if fish. I don't really like tuna so tuna noodle casserole wouldn't be something I would want but I wouldn't dismiss it just because he is the only person in his family who eats it. And I just have to say a dish without the cream soup and mushrooms isn't a green bean casserole. It is just green beans, which is fine I like green beans, but it isn't green bean casserole.

I can't remember the chef's name. It was basically me making my own cream of mushroom soup. But I will say that it tasted the same except being a little less salty. Of all the things we make at holidays this is one i would gladly leave out actually. The reason I make it is the kids love it. I think they think of it as a holiday thing like candy canes. So not something we would eat normally.

I never ate Hamburger Helper growing up. I bought it once and holy salt Batman! I found it totally inedible. DH likes it because it reminds him of being 18 again. It's not that hard or that expensive to make something similar from scratch. My mom makes Macaroni and Beef all the time. I ate Easy Mac A LOT in college because it was microwaveable so I could make it in my dorm room. To this day I cannot walk by the display without gagging. there are so many "convenience" foods I have never eaten, like tuna noodle casserole for instance. the first time I ever had Hamburger Helper was in college, when I was an obnoxious vegetarian. we ignored the instructions for cooking the meat, and just started with the "Helper" portion. and it wasn't good.... I LOVE tuna noodle casserole. My kids hate tuna so I never make it anymore, but that reminds me that I have a bunch of cans of tuna in my cupboard that have been there forever. I think I'll pick up some Tuna Helper today.

Not that fond of tuna noodle casserole, but I'll eat it occasionally. I've never much cared for any of those cream of crap casseroles when I was younger, actually, but they're okay now. The green bean casserole just annoys me now. MIL brings the ingredients over and makes it at our house for get togethers, and my brother just raves over it. First of all, it's just 3 ingredients you throw together. BFD. But more importantly, it's not very helpful of her to make it in our tiny kitchen, tying up our microwave, just as we're scrambling to finish all of the rest of dinner. So it just pisses me off now.

Green bean casserole is gross. I won't touch that crap.

I've never had green bean casserole.
It was never a part of my Mother's holiday menu repertoire.
Besides, green beans are certainly tasty enough simply steamed that they don't need to be casseroled to be edible.

So, I bought a box of Tuna Helper today just because of this thread. It brings back fond memories for me. Back when I was in high school and college I would go to my aunt's house in the evenings and hang out with her, and we'd have Tuna Helper tettrazinni and Grands flaky rolls all the time. She was like another Mom to me, (actually more of a Mom than my Mom ever was) and I really miss her, she passed away last August. DS said he'd even give it a try even though I bought him a pizza instead.

It was pretty good I actually ate some vs the traditional one, though the onion was easy to burn...but I don't eat onions.

I've never had hamburger helper. And the words tuna noodle casserole makes me wanna retch.
My mom has a recipe that I think is similar. A cup of sour cream, cup of tomato sauce, pound of beef, mushrooms (cooked), onions (if you like em, blech), prob pound of macaroni. Mix all together, throw in some mozzarella and mix. Throw in casserole dish, put mozzarella on top, bake till bubbly...prob 20 minutes. Oh and salt, pepper, garlic to taste. So yummy!!!

I liked my Mom's tuna noodle casserole, but I don't think it had any cream of whatever soup in it. I think it was mostly noodles, milk and tuna with probably a corn flake topping.

LOL! We still eat hamburger helper, probably once a week. That's how we budget our grocery money so we can put something away for retirement. I make a pseudo hamburger helper, and we love it. It is all/mostly organic, vegan and gluten free. Not so cheap. but not as pricey as my usual meals that I make.

I see we've moved on to green bean casserole.
I also have a vegan, gluten free, green bean casserole. It takes way more time than the standard.
Step 1: make the fried onions.
Step 2: make the cream of mushroom soup.
etc.
robbaseless - it isn't crap food, so.....

My mom used to make beef stroganoff when I was a kid. She died when I was young and when I was in my early 20's I kept trying to make different beef stroganoff recipes, but could never get it quite right. I finally figured out in my mid-20's that it was hamburger helper beef strognaff. lol. Yeah, we were poor and that was one our fancier dinners.
I'm cooking dinner for Thanksgiving and I know how to make all the traditional green bean casseroles, broccoli casseroles, Watergate salad, macaroni and cheese, cream corn, and cranberry sauce (from a can!) but I'd would be too embarrassed to serve it to them. So I'll skip these traditional dishes and serve "real" food.
Also, when you guys say "make from scratch" are you literally making the noodles from flour, eggs and water? I've done that once or twice, and I'd much rather open a bag.

I'v even heard people call the classic green bean casserole "from scratch" when they have canned green beans, campbels soup, and french's fried onions I have made noodles from scratch before. I don't mind the making, it's the clean up that kills it.

One thing I don't miss about the ILs holiday gatherings is all the casseroles veggies. Don't get me wrong, I used to like tuna casseroles and I can eat an entire pan of baked Mac and cheese over a few days (well not since my face hates it now), but green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, and broccoli ARE DELICIOUS AND SHOULD NOT BE DESTROYED IN CANNED CREAM SOUPS!!!!! I would play a game by myself called "find the edible veggie". There would be like one salad...maybe. I'm cooking Thursday, and I have two unadulterated veggie dishes on the menu... That's two more veggies than would be available at my family's or the XIL's gathering.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is "Watergate salad"...? Cool Whip, pistachio Jell-O pudding, mini marsh mellows and pineapple. There was some debate between my MIL and myself as to whether or not adding maraschino cherries instead of pineapple allows it to continue to be called watergate salad. I am not a fan of it but my dad, brother, DH and the kids love it.

Green beans are meant to be destroyed by cream of crap soup at thanksgiving. all other times I eat them sans cream of crap.
I'm trying creamed spinach this year. Home made. With real cream. I'm looking forward to it.

And BTW, tuna noodle casserole is nasty. Tuna fish is one of those foods that should not be served warm. Like pineapple.

And if anybody mentions HFCS or hydrogenated oils...lalalalala...I don't hear you.

It's also really good straight out of the tub.

I used to buy tubs and throw it in the freezer thinking that it would last longer that way...not after I discovered it made a good substitute for ice cream it didn't.

I mean, that is the definition of comfort food - warm, salty, delicious! I need to find a dairy free cream soup...
