Tuna noodle casserole is revolting IMO. HH is meh. I can eat it. I haven't had it in close to 20 years I'd guess.
I grew up eating a lot of cream of X soup dishes. It was the 70s/80s, my mom worked full time & that was an easy, filling, hot meal on the table for us. There are a few I still like. I generally like the golden mushroom soup better than the cream of.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is "Watergate salad"...? that is where you break in to your neighbors house with a flashlight and steal the salad they were intending to serve. But only good intentions behind the breakin. You want to show your neighbors are engaging in un-American activities.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what is "Watergate salad"...? Cool Whip, pistachio Jell-O pudding, mini marsh mellows and pineapple. There was some debate between my MIL and myself as to whether or not adding maraschino cherries instead of pineapple allows it to continue to be called watergate salad. I am not a fan of it but my dad, brother, DH and the kids love it. interesting. I'm not sure I would ever voluntarily try that.

And if anybody mentions HFCS or hydrogenated oils...lalalalala...I don't hear you. lol....I have three tubs of it in my freezer right now, apparently that's what my sister uses to frost her spice cake. she uses a can of diet ginger ale instead of the eggs and oil.

The pudding mix changes the color of the cool whip to green and the fruit cocktail and marshmallows makes it fluffy. Some people put coconut in it, but I hate coconut. It's an easy recipe that can be made in 2 minutes. It's served cold and looks like this:

Why is it called salad? It does not look like salad at all.

It falls into the category of dessert salad.
Not something you see much anymore but still popular in some areas.

My mom makes one called sweetheart salad that has clear gelatin, cream cheese, some sort of whipped topping, pineapples & merichino cherries. It is really sweet & fluffy & yummy. Now you guys have me thinking about it.

Now you guys have me thinking about it. Sounds similar to Mom's Pink Cloud, except I don't think there's gelatin and there is definitely sweetened condensed milk in hers. (because why not more sugar? )

Cherries don't go on Watergate salad. You don't use a can of fruit cocktail with cherries for your version? I actually only knew this as pistachio pudding salad as a kid until somebody told me its real name- again in my 20's. Seriously, discovering how to make some of these childhood "family" recipes was like the episode of Friend's when Monica realized she was trying to replicate the nestle's tollhouse cookie recipe.

We call it Pistachio Jello Salad here. Why, since there's no actual jello in it, is beyond me. But instead of fruit cocktail we use crushed pineapple and mandarin oranges. My mom adds pecans (b/c she thinks pecans make EVERYTHING better) and we put maraschino cherries on top b/c gramma likes them. My DH used to tell me he'd never eat that and it must be gross and why did I insist on eating it at mom's whenever I went then. Then I made it for a work pot luck and we had some left over and he ate it and has declared it his favorite dessert that I "make from scratch". Um, sure, if by "make from scratch" you mean mix up canned ingredients.

Chive I always thought pineapple should be served cold too, until a recent dinner at a close friend's house. Another close friend of hers is a professional gluten-free chef, and she brought dessert: she flambéd/caramelized the pineapple in rum, brown sugar and a tiny bit of cinnamon. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS!!!

I'm not a pineapple fan in general, but the rest of the ingredients list didn't do anything for me, either. what your friend did, though, I would likely try just in case. that sounds tasty! and MPL - jalapenos make anything better

The hangover from wine is one thing, the intestinal hangover from jalapenos , well, I wouldn't be leaving the bathroom for a good long time. Let's just leave it at that.

We call it Pistachio Jello Salad here. Why, since there's no actual jello in it, is beyond me. Don't you use Jello pudding in it? Well, yes, usually. I mean, is there any other kind of pudding?! But, I say that, b/c when I told Dh I was making Pistachio Jello Salad, he thought I was making a green jello mold. I had to explain to him no jello was going in it, just Jello brand pudding. And then, this thread taught me that it's called Watergate salad, so I really thought I was the one confused. Regardless of what people call it, it's yummy and it's literally all I've thought about for dessert all day today. So I've decided I'm going to have to make it for Turkey Day. Which means braving the grocery store tomorrow. It'll be worth it!

My Mom used to make a "jello salad" that looked a lot like the one in gooddecision's picture, but she used lime jello & whipping cream, but it DID have the cherries & crushed pineapple. It was SO good! Now I need to dig through her recipes to see if I can find it.
