A friend's daughter hasn't made the best choices and my friend bought the daughter groceries as she was out of money and in a bad spot. The daughter had the gall to whine that her mom didn't get her all the higher end food that she grew up on. My friend told her too bad, next time go to the food bank. She wasn't buying her groceries again. You could always ship your daughter a care package. Hamburger Helper. Velveeta. Wonder Bread. Top Ramen.

My son will be moving to off campus housing next year, I suspect he will have many of the same issues unless he learns how to cook. I told him there's always PB&J and spaghetti

LOL! We still eat hamburger helper, probably once a week. That's how we budget our grocery money so we can put something away for retirement.

Yeah, hamburger helper is also in our house. DH laughs because I never just cook it following the directions. It always gets doctored up!

I used to have it at least once a week too. Same with tuna helper. I loved the tetrazinni one. It's been a long time though. When we were a family of 4 it wasnt enough food so got out of the habit of getting it.

I make it from scratch sometimes. It's pretty easy and quick. And you can do all kinds of flavors, plus nothing I'm allergic to is hiding on the ingredient list.

I've never tried to make it from scratch. Can you post how to do that? I'm not very good with coming up with recipes, but can follow them really well.

I'll have to see what website I used. I ran across the print out last night when I was making pizza puffs. Basically there's a pretty standard pasta liquid ratio and then you add spices. The one I use has tons of varieties.

We used to make it regularly when our cooking skills were less than they are now. After a while, we'd make it, and then nobody would want to eat any of it. I'm interested to hear what everyone's favorite is/how to doctor it up/how to make it from scratch. If I can find some more things to make that my kids won't bitch about, I'd be eternally grateful.

The favorite at our house right now is "Tomato Basil Penne" (at least, it's the one that everyone will eat without complaining). Getting everyone to agree on other varieties isn't quite as easy. What's the favorite at your house, Lizard Queen?

What's the favorite at your house, Lizard Queen? I don't quite remember any more. It's been a few years. I remember DH liked the beef stroganoff. Hmmm, my kids like spaghetti, so I bet they'd like tomato basil penne.

I loved the potato stroganoff, though DD and I make it from scratch now. Sour cream, egg noodles etc, packet of stroganoff or your own spices (that's with the noodles because it's quicker than the potatoes but it's the same.)

I'm interested to hear what everyone's favorite is/how to doctor it up/how to make it from scratch. If I can find some more things to make that my kids won't bitch about, I'd be eternally grateful. I use only half a pound of ground meat (typically turkey) and add a bag of frozen veggies. Sometimes I will add in an extra handful of pasta.

There's the one with shells and a tomato seasoning. I frequently use Italian sausage rather than ground beef, add some fresh diced tomatoes, a couple more handfuls of shells, a bit more water, lots of fresh basil and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper in that one. The beef noodle pasta will get extra water and noodles, canned mushrooms, and either green beans or corn added to it. If I have left over sour cream, that's a good place to use it up. The cheesy tuna noodle one will either be made with leftover chicken or ham, extra milk and noodles, whatever grated cheese I have handy and then throw in a bag of frozen mixed veggies.
I tend to keep them in the house for those nights when I'm overly tired and don't want to start completely from scratch. Although I've made the cheesy ham one using cream of cheddar soup instead of tuna helper.

I'm with your DD Chloe, it's been a long loooonngg time since I ate HH and I would be ok with never having it again. It's not really hard to cook noodles and make stroganoff or spaghetti or mac/cheese style stuff without the box. Besides, one box would never feed us all anyway.

They are ALWAYS messing with the ingredients on varieties they've made for years. About once a year one of the varieties will change so much that my kids either love/hate it, or I have to adjust the cooking time, how much water I add, or something else. I wish Hamburger Helper would leave their recipes alone!

Speaking of Stroganoff, if you find yourself with a bunch of mushrooms you don't know what to do with, give Alton Brown's mushroom Stroganoff a try. It's quite yummy (and easy).

Growing up rich or poor sets your food style for life pretty much. I grew up poor/frugal. Dad shot deer and bought sides of beef, we had gardens and fruit trees, mom canned and made jam. To us store bought food like gram crackers were rationed, almost never got potato chips or pop. Dinners were usually a piece of meat, veggies like green beans mom canned and canned peaches for desert and baked potatoes. I had HH once in high school when I was babysitting for a weekend, I liked it. ISO lived in his camper most of the time for a year or two and was making HH for himself. I was grocery shopping with him when he asked me if he couldn't make it himself. I had him buy pasta and some spices to save money on the boxed stuff. To me it is overpriced but good. Kids who grow up with rich parents who have nothing but organic produce, grain fed beef, skinless boneless chicken grow up without knowing it isn't that way for all people. My niece raised her kids that way, boy goes to college and buys energy drinks, he had to hit bottom to live on peanut butter sandwiches. Between terms he stays with grandparents and tells them what brands he eats. Funny to watch him he isn't really spoiled just doesn't respect other people's money yet and his grand parents do get him what he likes. He isn't spoiled like once when his mom visited college he only had peanut butter and bread but said he didn't need anything, he was thrilled when they offered to buy him jelly. It is hard you want him to suffer having poor people food but don't want him to suffer too much. It will be a hard learning curve when he gets an apartment and job and can't afford to eat well. Grandma and mom only help with groceries for a short time before you are expected to support yourself.

Never had tuna noodle casserole either. First time I had anything made with cream of chicken soup was at MILs house. My mom grew up eating a lot of that processed stuff in the 50s and hated it. She refused to serve it to us. We were hardly rich. I never developed a taste for any of it so I don't cook it. The kids have never developed a taste for it either. Drives MIL nuts because that stuff is all the other grandkids eat. Mine won't touch it.

Drives MIL nuts because that stuff is all the other grandkids eat. Mine won't touch it. that's pretty much what my mom said when I finally asked her about it in my mid-20s. I had an older co-worker that would look forward to when his wife would take their son to visit her side of the family for extended times that he couldn't take that much vacation time. he would revel in his tuna noodle casserole at lunch, and couldn't understand why I was horrified and not even remotely curious in his concoction. um, the fact that you only have this when your wife leaves wasn't a clue? you know I cook a lot, and well, or so I'm told... that said, I'm actually going to put a green bean casserole on the table next week. but I'm going to make it from scratch. between my abhorrence of anything "cream of X" and my roommate's legit mushroom allergy, it wouldn't be on the menu if it wasn't "whole" ingredients.

Every once in a while I make Hamburger Helper but I doctor it up beyond belief - everything from mushrooms to canned tomatoes to garlic/onions and from wine to sour cream to cheese.
