He talked about globalization of the world and how the fifties and sixties are never coming back to middle class in America. He said instead of a high school education, you need a University degree to work in the new global economy. The good paying factory jobs are basically gone and staying overseas. I get that, and understand it. I do not have to like it. Here is the question for everyone:
If we are in the new global world order, and we are telling American citizens what they have to do to succeed, why do we allow millions of undocumented, mostly uneducated, illegals to come here seeking the American dream? Why hasn't our government admitted to them it is all a lie, and they should stay home? It's okay for the President to talk to the American citizens in real life terms, with all the consequences, but not the immigrants? We allow and encourage the poor and uneducated to come here, knowing most will fail in their dreams..........and tell our citizens to change with the times..........

The new global economy requires Latin Americans that have earned their mowing and picking degrees to continue coming here to take care of those menial jobs.

I'm sorry to say it, I don't mean to look down on anybody but many(not all) of the illegals ARE educated! They can read and write, add and substract, divide and multiply which is much more than most high school graduates in this country can do or claim that they can!
I came here and went to college at the age of thirty and ofcourse most of my classmates were 19-20 years old. I was bored out of my mind in classes waiting for these kids to grasp the simple concepts of physics or comprehend World History. Just because most of them don't speak English doesn't mean they are uneducated!
I know a few people that came here legaly, speak decent English and have degrees in Mechanical Engineering or nursing and such. They can't get a job in their fields because they have to take tests for equivalencies. And that takes time and there are always reasons to delay and so on. In the mean time, janitorial work pays the bills! Are the principles of mechanics in the US different than those in other countries? Is the body of an American different than that of a Russian or Algerian or what not?

But go ahead and worry about the millions of illegals swarming across our borders every single day if that makes you happy.

I don't worry about them. I just don't want them on our roads with no license or insurance, clogging up our schools and hospitals, and dropping anchor babies for benefits. If they try criminal activities, I can protect myself. Unfortunately those that are in prison are treated humanely unlike if we were in their prisons.

Btw, I don't see too many mowing lawns anymore. Which is fine by me. I'd rather pay more and not hire illegals or those who either can't or pretend they can't speak English.

Why dodge the President's speech and make it out that illegals are dwindling and it is okay to allow them in? He tells American citizens, it is all over for you. Get used to it. And yet all migrants whether legal or illegal come here in search of the American dream. No one tells them it is all over. Of course, for some migrants working for less than minimum wage, no benefits from their company, it is still a dream from where they came from. It is just not the American dream.

Since America is exceptional, Americans must be exceptional. And if Americans are exceptional, then all Americans should be above average. That means they must all hold above average jobs that pay above average wages. No exceptional American should have to do menial labor for menial pay. So what are we to do about the need for menial jobs to get done?

That was not its intent. I think it is the underlying thought basis for much that is happening in this country these days. It goes with there is a bottom line standard of living no American should fall below in a country as rich as this. Liberals push it but I don't hear conservatives really countering it. Trump doesn't add that once the wall is built and the illegals gone, we are going to have crops rotting in the fields and empty aisles in our stores, Americans working for well below minimum wage and living accordingly, or a large jump in produce prices.

Of course, for some migrants working for less than minimum wage, no benefits from their company, it is still a dream from where they came from. It is just not the American dream. I didn't say it was okay to let them in. Immigration should only be done legally.
You answered your own question about why people still want to immigrate here. We have a fairly stable economy, and in most parts of the country, you can avoid being randomly shot or having your house blown up. Your kids can actually get enough to eat and go to school - that may not seem like much to us, but to some people, it's almost unimaginably luxurious. And to people coming from a society like Mexico - where all the land and assets are owned by a very small minority, and the majority has very little chance to improve their lot in life - our society, which don't confine people to certain roles in society, still seems full of opportunity.
I don't have a problem with what Obama said, though - he didn't say 'it's all over for you, get used to it..' He's urging young people to get an education past HS if they want to be successful. Gone are the days when you could drop out of HS and still end up as a steel worker and making a decent wage. Surely this is the same message you would tell your own kids? Or do you think the government is obligated to make jobs that HS drop outs could easily get and that would pay the same as a skilled electrician or accountant?

Why don't you actually read the speech? Where does he mention the fifties and sixties? Where does he mention factories? Did you just read a Reader's Digest condensed version as interpreted by right-wingers? You're saying you don't like higher learnin' and you don't have to like it. I can see that. www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/president-obamas-speech-to-house-of-commons-the-full-text/

You will deny this, but by the mid to late sixties, that was when blacks, browns, and females entered the middle class jobs that promoted their upward climb in America. Now that route has been decimated unless you are a math or science wizard, and due to Unions and democrats controlling the inner city schools systems, the vast majority of black and brown students are relegated to no jobs of any consequence.

Keeping schools open to protect union teaching positions where economy of scale can be achieved closing schools with small student enrollment, or under performing schools and sending the children to higher performing schools. Please do not plead ignorance of the Democratic politicians in the inner cities teacher colluding with unions protecting their member's jobs, at the expense of the student's education. It is a well established fact.

We are not discussing the Canadian school system here. We are discussing our community leader that apparently is failing all segments of the USA at every level, except for the category of illegal immigrants who he is warmly welcoming into our country without telling them the American dream is dead.

It's true. Canada is the most highly-educated country on earth and our students excel in the international PISA tests, despite our schools "being controlled by unions and the left". You seem to be blaming Obama for everything, even though your students were doing dismally under the previous administration. I heard someone blaming Obama for the Zika virus the other day. Right up your alley.

From rescuing your hostages to getting your astronauts back down to earth, the heroes in your movies are always Americans, even when they're not. USA! USA!
