I have been looking for a new job and yes I'm sure they are thinking this will help with that. And probably as part of their front desk beautification project. LOL. If by this, you mean that they think you look dated and unprofessional, you are probably right. You are too old to wear a ponytail to work and too young to wear a bun. Even cut to armpit length, your hair is too long to be professional. It isn't that expensive to maintain a nice haircut if you keep it simple. A longish reverse bob that falls somewhere between your chin and the top of your shoulders is easy enough. You just keep the ends turned under for a few extra weeks. You have my sympathy. Change is always difficult. Egads, why does one have to have short hair just because they are older? I don't like short hair, don't like bobs and will wear my hair long (if I reach back behind my back I can touch my hair with my finger tips) until I die (ok, maybe a slight exaggeration!).
I spend a fortunate on cutting, coloring, highlighting, keratin treatments, Brazilian blowouts, and products for my hair. I wear my hair a variety of ways depending on time, what I'm doing, etc. I have never been told I look unprofessional and would laugh in the face of someone that told me I did.
I will never be ok with getting "old lady hair" just because I'm a certain age.

I don't think any age is inappropriate for long hair IMO. I think how you style it is what has to change. And no matter what you hair cut you still have to maintain a professional image if you are customer facing. I think they are trying to hint that the OP's style is not projecting the image they want for the company. I'm not so sure. Really long hair on women in their 40s and older starts to look a little odd to me. I think of long hair as a very youthful style and on middle-aged and older women it actually seems to age them somewhat. I'm not talking about hair below the shoulders but hair that's almost waist length. I don't think waist length hair looks good on anyone. My hair is long-ish...I would say below my shoulder blades but not to the middle (hence the 'long-ish"...lol). I can't go longer because it starts to look like hell. I sometimes go a little shorter. I did cut my hair short once and the entire world hated it. Even my mother...and my mom is the type to tell me I look great when I know I look like shit!lol
