Not everyone should cut or color their own hair. Some people can do a great job - others, well, you can tell they did it themselves.

Very true. I miss spots all the time when I color. My hair is long and it's difficult to get it perfect. However, I don't care if others know I did it myself. What somebody else thinks of my hair is of no importance whatsoever to me. In Opti's case, I think it does matter. You are right. A professional cut and color would be the best bet. The problem stems from the fact that in 6 weeks, she won't be able to get it done again because of expenses. Then, she looks like a skunk, which is more problematic to me than someone knowing she did it herself.

How much does it cost to color hair? For me, like $8.00.
The last time I went to a salon to get it done, it was $110.00. That included color and highlights.

It's your hair; you get to decide how it is styled. Your coworkers only get to make decisions about whatever is attached to their own heads.
Thank your coworkers for the gift and do what you want with your hair.
You don't owe them an explanation, and you don't need their approval.

That would suck to have as a repeating expense.

I get my hair colored every 4 weeks. I get it cut every other time. Sometimes I get my bangs trimmed every time I color.
I just color - I don't highlight, but many people think I have highlights. My beautician says my gray takes the color lighter and it looks like I have highlights.
I think you need to cut your hair much shorter than you are thinking. I think possibly shorter lenghth like the shoulder lenghth you nixed. My Niece (Sister's DIL) gifted my DS with a makeover appointment earlier this year. My Sister has steadfastly refused to color her hair for years, she doesn't actually have an aversion to color, she just can't afford to maintain it like you. The beautician cut DS's hair in a page boy like reverse bob like was discussed and colored it. I can't tell you how much better my DS's appearance is. Shorter hair is easier to maintain and color yourself.
If I was going to color my hair myself, my hair would be at least as short as my DS's is now. My hair right now just touches my shoulders. I could easily go a few inches shorter. I would take advantage of a really good cut at the very least. My current beautician is very good at the cut/shape/style of hair. I am able to wash and go. I wonder if you give in and get your hair cut much shorter, could you manage to maintain the color yourself?

I paid $57 on Saturday and that included her trimming my bangs. If I just get it colored it is $45. I usually tip 20%. I could probably find someplace a little cheaper and I could easily find many places more expensive. I think she keeps the price on the reasonable side as I am going every 4 weeks. You can probably get a box of hair dye for $5-12
I started getting my hair done in the salon b/c I found it very hard to get it even and felt I was damaging my hair by over processing. My DH still colors his hair himself, but he has the typical short Men's haircut. .

If you went to shoulder length hair you could still put it up. I have wavy, shoulder length hair and I'm a runner, so being able to put my hair up is a requirement. None of that awkward half up, half down stuff for me. Also, some longer layers will help keep the haircut shape longer, so you can go more time between cuts. Long, shapeless hair ages a person and does not look professional.
I will say that a part of me would be thinking 'fuck off' to coworkers wanting to buy me a haircut, but then my brain will kick in and think 'hell yeah, makeover! I've been needing one'! Take advantage of this opportunity to revive your look.

How much does it cost to color hair? For me, about $6-7 every 6 weeks or so. If I go to the hairdresser, about $150.

I have decently long hair. I also put it in a pony tail to go to work in. Long hair coming off into everything including food at the GC isn't attractive to me. I will say I think it is a little shorter than yours and I do color it myself. It probably doesn't look like I paid hundreds getting it done but no one I know has hair that does either so to me it doesn't matter. I will say though that my DD got me into using a flat iron. My hair is also a little thicker and wavy now that I am older. My hair looks so much better after spending a few minutes in the morning using the flat iron. It isn't the perfect flat glossy look of a hollywood star but it does look much better. I will say though that in the beginning it took a while to do, like maybe 30 minutes. Now I can do it in under ten. So while time is a consideration understand that with practice it doesn't take less and less. Good luck whatever you choose.

Yes, but if her look doesn't coincide with the direction her employer is taking then it may have an effect on her livelihood.

If you keep doing what you've always done, you're probably going to get the same result. Try something new.

How much does it cost to color hair? Depends on what you are going for and where you go. At the beauty school it costs me around $35 to color. If I go to JCP it runs closer to $100. If I colored it on my own it was about $9. I think if it's the first time you've colored or it's been a long time it's a good idea to do it with the professionals first. It's better to shell out the money upfront than have to shell it out later so they can fix it. I eventually took over dying my hair red. The beauty school was using 6RV so I bought the same color off the shelf. Vidal Sassoon gave me the best results, IMO. I got A LOT of compliments whenever I used that brand. Not something I am going to attempt while going blond. I could easily melt the hair off my head. I am leaving blond to the professionals.

Considering the OP's past posts about wanting more hours or a promotion and that she's not getting either, in fact her hours are being cut AGAIN and on top of that now her co-workers/boss are gifting her with a make-over. ..I don't think telling them to pound sand is the wisest idea.

I have always thought you were probably pretty smart and kind of an original thinker. That can lead to being different and not seeing things others see. Maybe your looks are not working for you and you are being told that. I would get my feelings hurt, if I were in a situation where I thought people were criticizing my looks, but I think/hope I would get over that and go with what was being suggested. Whatever you do, good luck,

I can't afford a high maintenance look either Opti and I go for the long layers. I start with the longest section just below shoulder length and let it grow from there until I can get a cut again. I'd skip color if you can't afford to maintain it though.
When I feel like messing with it, a flat iron does make it look much better. I have wavy/curly when it's short enough hair, it's a bit messy on its own.

It was a demi color, designed to fade out in case I didn't like it.

Whatever you do, good luck, Thanks for your good wishes. I think part of it is they want me to be more feminine or they miss the time I did get my hair colored because its all faded out now.
I went into work even though I am sick today. Since I was sick I didn't have time to launder any of my work shirts so with approval of my boss, I wore my own more form fitting button down shirt. Not white. A blue paisley. I left my hair down and put in one of my old hair clips. I got some compliments except for the 29yr old HR woman. She has standards I can't meet, or certainly choose not to try to meet on my income/resources. Well, she liked the shirt, but disapproved of the state of my hair. LOL.
(Today she was wearing a silver sweater with a black tulle like skirt that was just above floor length. Yesterday, the marketing folks went to an off-site meeting and the head of the ALF was wearing 6 inch heels. And then you have what the aides and the kitchen staff wear. )

You coworkers might be tired of you complaining that you cannot fit a hairstyle into your budget.
Here's some money, now quit complaining.

I'd be totally embarrassed by the gesture. I'm sure it's meant well but it's pointing out a serious flaw in me and I'd feel awful even if it was well intended.

I would see this as what it is: an attempt by them to help you meet the standards they would like you to meet.

I'm about as high maintenance as they come when it comes to hair but even I am not "always" in the salon chair. A box of hair dye is $10 and a haircut at Great Clips is $15. As long as you aren't going more than 1-2 shades lighter or darker, roots shouldn't be a huge issue. They even have hair dye for roots only...about 6 bucks. The fact that this seems to have come up in a big enough way that they are taking up a collection for you tells me you better figure out a way to get it together and project a more professional image. You are not representing the company in a positive way and you may find yourself shown the door.

I'm not understanding why you feel longer hair is easier to maintain. Whenever I let mine grow out it's a mess, much easier keeping it short. I guess I'm missing something?

They did not just up and take a collection. I just wished out loud one day recently that I wished I could get my hair cut and colored as well while I was handling some of our beauty salon paperwork.
According to one of the higher-ups who my boss said was giving financially to the cause painted it in a totally different light. She said I was the first one to win the XYZ award. I have no idea what the truth is. Things are in flux here. Try not to project on me simply because I am 56 with long hair.
TY in advance.

I am not understanding why you think my experience and your experience should be the same. I have thick wavy hair. I've had it short. long, with layers, with bangs, with highlights, etc.
Why? Its called my *OWN* personal experience. Obviously it is different for *YOU*.
