We all have quirks. Another thread reminded me that there are a few things that everybody seems to be absolutely fascinated with, but I'm not. Feels a little weird. Like I'm missing the gene that allows me to "get" it.
Researching ancestry is one of those things I have zero interest in. Maybe because I tend to focus more on what people choose to do rather than their background, but it just doesn't interest me one tiny little bit who someone's parents, grandparents or ancestors were - not mine or anybody else's. My ancestors could be royalty, notorious outlaws, farmers, peasants or famous historical figures and I really wouldn't care. Other people are very into it, seem to feel a connection and find it interesting. But on a scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being most interested, my interest level in my ancestry is about a 3.
The next one is a little embarrassing. I have zero interest in space - exploration, astronomy, any of it. It is so indescribably dull to me. And it makes me feel a little heathen to admit I don't find it intellectually stimulating, but I don't. Not at all. Interest level is around a 2. And that's saying a lot coming from someone who finds many things like statistics, physics, chemistry and certain parts of the tax code interesting.
Sometimes I wonder if there's something about ancestry or space that I'm missing. But I can't wonder about it for too long or my eyes glaze over and I go unconscious, possibly hitting my head as I slide off my chair.
What are the things that everybody else seems to totally love but you go "meh" about?

Milee,
I would rate my interest in Ancestry at about a 4. I am only mildly interested - the ethnic background, where relatives came from and why, where they settled I am interested enough to review if someone else did the research. If I have to do the research myself, my interest level is about a 1.
I also pretty much agree on Astronomy - I had a college course on the weather and planets etc, and I just found it so difficult. (I also found Physics challenging to say the least).

Going to rock/pop, etc concerts. I have friends that just love it and would go any chance they get. I don't understand it. If I want to listen to their music I would just put the CD on. Why do I want to go to some annoying show with a bunch of idiots.
I am a huge fan of musical theater though.
Things that make you go hmmmmm

Scrappbooking. For some reason, a bunch of my friends are really into it, and I just don't get the fascination with it. My interest in it is like a -4.

I am interested in ancestry in a cultural way only. Why did my ancestors move to where they did? What did they do to make a living? I find it amusing that my tinsmith/plumber grandfather made good money during prohibition making stills.
I am completely uninterested in manicures, nail polish, makeup, and hair. I get my hair done because I know I have to look professional. I like pedicures only because I like my feet rubbed. I'm meh about shopping. I like to look professional, but I find trying on clothes to be torturous.
I don't get NASCAR. Drive fast, turn left.
My husband loves Sci Fi and fantasy. It makes my eyes bleed.
I like to watch and play various sports. I don't get the whole "my team lost I'm going to pout" or referring to your team as "we." Unless you are out there on the field, there is no "we."
I don't get moms who only talk about their kids. I love my kids, but I want some other stuff in my life too.

For me it's the opposite. I'm into things that no one else is.
I'm a 80 yo stuck in a 40 year old's body.
My idea of a good time is knitting, cross stitching, or diving in to a Beethoven Symphony.
I'm on facebook, but only to join an English Paper Piecing group. Oh, and I got a coupon off of there once.
Seriously, when I go to my retreats or stitch-ins, I'm the youngest by 15-40 years. It used to be worse when I was in my 20s.
I'm not really quick to embrace technology. The only reason I got a smart phone is so that I can get last minute emails about practices being cancelled due to weather.

So, my theory is that our brains can only excel at so many things and can only retain so much information at any one time. So, while I LOVE sports and definitely cheer for my hometown team, I really am not into football. Both sons even played Pop Warner and one played high school football. I went to the boys' games and mostly socialized. It's not the contact nature of the sport because I played ice hockey and personally love a good, hard, check. I just think the "play" nature of football makes it a little too choreographed to be a true example of athleticism. I'm so disinterested, I don't even know the names and roles of all of the positions. I do, however, like the tight pants on the really fit guys. Don't flame me. As I said above, my brain is overwhelmed with lacrosse stats and ingredient labels and with trying to stay one step ahead of any high school senior shenanigans. I am certain that, if I had the cognitive space, I would love football. Or, maybe not even then. (GRG runs ducking out of the thread.)

My SIL will only talk to me about my kids. At the end of their last visit I was like "PLEASE ask me about something else." I think it's because we don't have anything in common. (See my above post).

I'm not trying to pick on you but every time someone finds out I don't have a smartphone I have to hear a flood of "well I wouldn't have one either but ...". I DON'T CARE! I'm not judging you for having one, I just don't care to have one.

OK. Here's one thing I missed: I missed the shopping gene. And the decoration gene. I mean, I'm down with window shopping/browsing like once every few years. DH and I might do it on an upcoming kid-free 24 hour period. But, going for fun. No thank you. I don't identify with Carl's wife at all. My home is like the worst decorated house ever. We've lived there for over 5 years, and there are 6 pictures hanging on the walls. Our house is 1800 sq feet. No one seems to mind though. Plus, we can always use the peanut if we need to as an "excuse." I largely missed the girly gene, I guess. I've been blessed that I've always had good self-esteem. I feel good about myself even though I don't have perfectly coiffed hair, matching clothing and accessories, I'm overweight, and I do make up sparingly. I've never needed to get drunk/high to have a good time. There's something else I don't get.

I really hate this idea of needing to be accessible at all times. My kids would prefer to not to be stranded. Their wants win right now. That's my problem with it also. I know I'll have to give in eventually. Then I'll come here and post about my failure.

I must have a list for grocery shopping. If I lose my list before we get to the store I panic.
I'll re-write my list 3-4 times until I am satisfied that it is organized by aisle/item in the store.

Reality TV and The Voice type shows.
Kid concerts, kid plays, etc even when it's my own kids. I'll go but on the 1-100 scale, I'm at a 3 I think.
And if I can get both kids overnight, I don't miss them every second, it's more like 10 minutes per 24 hours.

I have no desire to decorate my house and I hate dressing up, getting a mani/pedi, have brush and go hair and wear little makeup.

oooohhh, I remembered a really good one.
For me, the most important part about the wedding is the actual ceremony..saying vows, considering it a sacrament, etc . I really could give two sh*ts less about the reception part.

When I built the place I just went with neutral EVERYTHING. The carpet is beige, the walls all off white, the appliances bisque, the counters just beige. I had zero decorating skills so just went plain with everything. It looks like somebody just moved in. No window coverings, the steel doors are just primer, no paint. I did get the bug a little when I redid younger son's room with that navy blue wall and minion theme. I might have to get bold and paint some this Summer!

I want cut flowers and not live plants. Live plants are another thing I need to deal with. I don't care that the flowers die within a week.

The things I used to be interested in, I'm not anymore. Just too overwhelmed with life, I think. Here's onw though: my mom loved watching the bachelor, and I can't stand it (plus all the other competition shows besides so you think you can dance.) Most of those shows make me want to puke.

I really could give two sh*ts less about the reception part. Our minister actually got visibly annoyed with us when we explained that our number one goal was to have as brief a ceremony as possible. It wasn't necessarily that we were in a rush to get to the reception, we just both find the ceremony really boring and wanted to be kind and spare our guests that agony.

I cannot stand watching the same movie or television show more than once. To me, it's a waste of time. I already saw this, give me something new.
I also do not watch reality television.

When I built my house my décor was exactly the same! I actually hired a decorator to come and put together the family room because it was awful. he didn't realize we built the house and made a comment about the god awful carpet the original owners put in...umm, I picked that out!LOL
I have since sold that house and the new owners had it listed not long ago. the wife had a major flair for decorating and the house looks gorgeous now....now I want to buy it back!lol

I can do you one better on the smart phone -> I lost my dumb phone around Xmas sometime, replaced it with a smart phone and promptly turned all features off. So now I have ... a dumb phone disguised as a smart phone (yes I do know how to turn the internet back on if I need to) and there are about a dozen people in the world I have given my number to. That phone is for MY convenience, not for everyone to disrupt whatever I am doing whenever they feel like it

I do this, too. my roommate thinks I'm crazy, because he has a running list of things that run out/things he thinks of that we need for X upcoming project or whatever, etc. before we leave the house, I have to rewrite the list and add any sale items/things I have coupons for. as for me, I'm really not into movies. I am a child of the 80s that hasn't seen most of the "classics" from our childhood - the Goonies comes to mind as one that usually elicits a jaw-on-chest sort of response from others my own age. not my thing.

I missed a lot of the girl genes too like shopping, being into shoes, polishing my nails, decorating, hair etc.
Hunting is something I will never understand. My HS boyfriend was an avid hunter and I remember just being bored out of my skull listening to him describe in detail his "deer drives." OMG someone shoot me.
Planning parties. I would rather stab myself in my eye than plan a party (love to plan trips though!). Unfortunately I'm in the throes of this right now as my daughter turns 1 next month and despite the fact that I think 1 year old birthday parties are stupid my husband's family seems to expect it. I'm completely at a loss as to what to do for this party. Any sort of internet research reveals super over the top Pinterest-y party ideas which I don't have time, energy or desire to do. My DH and I got married just the two of us and had a casual BBQ a few months later. That party planning was so stressful....there is no way I could've had an actual wedding even if I wanted one.

I don't have much/any interest in history.
I'm not a big animal person at all. I see people taking pictures of animals at the zoo and I'm like "What are you doing to do with that?". Or people with pictures of their dogs at their desk at work.
I like watching sports, but I do not let any game dictate my schedule or my life. I have friends that always will have the TV on if there is any game on. I had an acquaintance that used to always have the TV on and would actively watch some random college football game intently when he had people over at his house. WTF?
