I think living on the beach working remotely and flying to Iceland a few times a year would be a dream...

I think living on the beach working remotely and flying to Iceland a few times a year would be a dream... that's pretty much where my head is tonight. I sent my resume to the recruiter a couple hours ago, along with a question that I noticed this position he reached out to me for, it isnt listed in the current openings on the website. what's the deal there? either way, we are chatting again Tuesday morning. I'll have more questions by then, I'm sure.

chiver78 - If they will relocate you to Iceland, I would seriously consider it. We have friends there now, thanks to a job relocation. Their cat did have to spend time in quarantine after the move, but beyond that, they've been incredibly happy with the change. (His job. She freelances/works from home.) I was told they have a whole department that handles relocation. you get a 'project manager' basically, who is your main point of contact that walks you through all the steps of government requirements and everything. Ideally, I would rather not relocate immediately. but if I find I love it there, I wouldn't have a problem moving later. I know I am about ready to blow everything up again, but that seems like so much at once.

I love Iceland. But I'm not sure I could live there. I've only traveled when days are near 'normal' or when they are more light than not. I'm not sure how I'd do with the darkness. Also I'm not sure I'd ever feel comfortable driving in Iceland except in summer. Reykjavik is no problem, but I've done tours of other things because I did not want to be the one driving.
But breathing in Iceland is just... the air is so clear. And Reykjavik is wonderful, expensive, but wonderful. Its history is unique and interesting. Iceland basically missed the industrial revolution and so when they were 'discovered' in time for the technical revolution they didn't have any 'old ways and infrastructure' they needed to undo and rip out... they just surged ahead. My favorite tour guide doesn't do tours any more but if you go I'll try to put you in touch with him because if you could meet up and talk it would be worth it...
And you could send me medicated sweets whenever I wanted ... lol... (cough drops... strongest I ever had, wish I'd bought them out...)

In fact, I had a recruiter contact me for a confidential position. The Pres wanted to interview me via zoom, and they wouldn't even tell me the name of the company. Just that it was a manufacturing company and general location. That was interesting. I hate Zoom interviews, and couldn't really ask a lot of questions because I had no idea who the company was

that's exactly what this seems to be. I think my surprise was that is usually for really senior positions, executive searches, etc. at least, what I know of them. I wouldn't have expected to ever be considered for a position needing a confidential search. <- there's the Impostor Syndrome rearing its ugly head again. I was chatting with AZ this weekend while looking at the official job description writeup, and found myself picking out the things I don't have that they want. such a female reaction to this....guys will apply to any job they think they can do, whereas a woman won't apply unless she checks off every single box in the list. oh, and our conversation tomorrow will focus more on my specific experience as well as what the job would actually be. I have more questions.

this morning's call went well. I am on the short list of candidates that will be presented to the hiring client later this week. still have a ton of logistics questions if this does in fact become a thing. but the job sounds really interesting, and would draw from across all of my varied experience. let's see if they want me, and how badly?

They will pay 100% of my medical premiums and, after the first year, unlimited vacation days. Remote work is encouraged. So no more sitting around when my work is all done! I love to travel and can work from my RV.

So I was contacted again by the person that interviewed me last week. So they are moving ahead with their internal candidate and he was seeing if I was still interested because they may have a junior category management position or assistant buyer.
The plot twist: 15k less than I make now. I already took a 12k/year paycut for my current job (paycut I still have not made up 4 years later , I am not about to take another paycut).
So I thanked him but that was a solid no.

stillmovingforward - Yay! Congrats on the new job.
TheHaitian - Still, you made a good enough impression on him that he reached out to you. That's good news.

I'll need a lot of face time in the office. So the long commute is reality but I can take 2 buses. It makes the commute longer but I can read or snooze on the way. And I don't have to pay for parking. Despite the commute, which is long, i'm super pleased. I was getting really worried about being out of work.

I love to travel and can work from my RV. Even if the salary is lower, you need to factor in the amount you won't be paying in medical premiums as compensation. I always tell people to look at the total compensation package, not just the actual salary dollars
